We went from a big bulky HP all in one printer to this wonderful printer. I waited two months before I wrote a review. I have printed, faxed, scanned, and used the photo capture feateutres. All work perfectly and so easy. I have also changed the color ink (with generic) once two weeks ago because I had to print a few 8x10 pictures. I love all the features. The wireless setup was a breeze. This is a great home printer. And for the price ($89) you couldn't beat it!

There were many reviews that said that it was hard to set up. My husband didn't have any problems. I am very happy with the print quiality. I would reccommand it for use in the home.

Bought this printer and a few months later the color cartridges ran out. I had only printed a few color pages. The printer won't work, won't print black and white if any color cartridge is out. Called to complain and was told that every time the printer cleans itself, it takes out ink from every cartridge. Furthermore, the printer uses color ink to print black and white. I was told to avoid losing color ink by printing grayscale. For several months I went through the hassle of specifying grayscale on every printing. During that time, I only printed one color page. Next thing I knew, the color cartridges were out again. This printer guzzles color ink whether you print color or not. We're getting another printer and using this one only for scanning.

Setup, wireless printing & scanning with my mac is easy and smooth. Ink use is great and the cartridges are not that expensive. Sleeps when not in use. I never have that need to turn it off. Printing speed is not so impressive. I've seen photo printers make faster prints than this one. Photo printing is embarrassing. Text and graphics are OK. One thing about this is that it JAMS. It jams close to 60% of the time. Take note that I print on different mediums, from inkjet paper stickers and shipping labels.

I think this is a great product for the price, when up against the competitors. The wireless setup isn't as easy as I anticipated, and I need help getting it online, but once it was up and running everything was perfect. It's not a fast printer, but it's pretty quiet. As for ink consumption, too soon to tell, and you need to adjust your printer settings every time so it won't use your color ink to match black print. Every other function is just perfect... works well, great value for the money.

First printer had mechanical problem. Second & Third printers "printed at 90 degrees to paper axis". (The paper was installed incorrectly).This is an excellent machine with tremendous capabilities, but you must read all 207 pages manual before you touch it.[Telephone and on-line help is available, but is of low quality.]A quick start-up guide would have avoided many difficulties.

I've returned this printer and replaced with a HP Photosmart all-in-one, and cannot recommend this machine unless the 11x17 printing is the key selling feature:- Photo quality is poor -- whether from a scan or a file, the picture printed did not look like the original. Color was wrong, tones flattened, etc. Far worse than the printer we are replacing- Photo software is poor -- weird and poorly supported 3rd party software. Limited features and I was never able to figure out how to do basic things on it- Even basic text on paper printing seems muddy and very "wet"- Brother support is weak -- other than telling me that I should go buy their paper to see if it improves quality, or return and try a second machine, they were able to offer no troubleshooting support, and didn't seem to care that I was frustratedThe price seemed too good to be true for the features offered, and now I know why! After lugging this huge and flawed machine around and wasting hours trying to get it to perform, I'm unlikely to buy anything that Brother makes in the future.

A nice product. Amazing that I can purchase this for < $60!Great quality too. Just looking at it....felling it.... and watching it work, I am a - maze - ed!!!It copies, scans, prints, and..... faxes? Hey I haven't faxed anything in about 5 years. Nowadays I scan and email, so for me, this option is not needed.Anyway, it does a nice job for your day to day black and white printing. It is quick and it is quiet.If you are looking for PHOTO QUALITY, then this is not for you. I did not try this on photo paper, but I just see that the colors are not vibrant as on my screen even whey I print on good paper......When you purchase a printer, you have to think about the ongoing ink cost! I bought some off branded ink at the time of the purchase, but have not used them yet. Cost was about $25 for the set of 4. OEM will cost more.I definitely like the idea that you only fill up the color that runs out! The OEM cartridges are opaque, so you cannot see how much is left in the cartridge. Some of the replacements out there are transparent, which I feel is the way to go.And, convenient! The ink tanks are in the front right side of the printer! No opening up the top and struggling...... it's an easy 'pop in" cartridge!Overall, it is a good printer. If you need to print color from time to time, but do not need the photo quality, this is a great choice.

I bought this item from another site at a much cheaper price ($80), but it was an great investment. What attracted me to it was the wireless feature, plus the other great features. I needed a new fax machine and this is a doozy. I have it in a central location in my home so it can be utilized by all the other computers in the house. Printing is a breeze for my entire family and all you have to do is use the setup disk and your computer is ready.

While the print quality of this machine is very good, it is a constant problem to use. The paper constantly jams if you try to use anything except plain paper. The feeder cannot handle photo paper, card stock or or any other special paper. Unless you plan on limiting your printing to very basic documents, I recommend not going with this printer.

After reading up on all the all-in-one printers available for $100-$300, I purchased this printer for $89.99 in April of 2008 to use on a network, primarily with Macs. I have it networked through a Cradlepoint MBR-1000 EVDO router.I'm about a month into use with the printer and am pretty pleased. For $90 (including ink), it was a real bargain for what it's capable of. That, and generic replacement ink is dirt cheap.PRINTINGI haven't printed any photos yet, but my day-to-day printing has been of reasonably good quality. At first, the blacks weren't as black as I'd like, but I think it's gotten better with continued use. Paper tray could be bigger and easier to access, but I don't hate it.COPYINGAuto-Feeder isn't bad. Only holds ten pages. But it's a low-priced printer with an auto-feeder, so I'm not going to complain. Flatbed is big enough for letter, but not legal. Ok.SCANNINGI am using OS X Tiger (10.4) and have no problems scanning when connected by USB or through the network. It works well, and I'm pleased with the results. Custom scan settings are fairly simple to set up through the "Brother ControlCenter" on my desktop, too.I read complaints about scanning being a problem on OS X Leopard. I can't speak to this, but know that Brother has posted drivers/updates for Leopard on their site to address this. Leopard users, are you up and running as of yet?NETWORKINGNetworking this thing wasn't as easy as it should have been. That's the main reason I'm giving it four stars instead of five. It took me an entirely uninterrupted half day to network this thing the way I wanted - it wasn't self-explanatory. Be prepared to understand your router, network, IP addresses, DHCP servers, whatever other networking stuff that isn't entirely self-evident. I eventually figured it out without contacting customer service, and I'm no IT guy. So yes, this thing CAN be networked, and yes, it CAN be networked with a Mac. Once you get the networking up and running, it's a pretty nice thing.FAXHaven't used this yet.CUSTOMER SERVICEHaven't called 'em yet (by choice).IN CONCLUSIONI like this printer, and it does what I need for a low price. At this point (one month in), I would recommend this printer. Beware the difficulty factor in networking, but know that it can be done.

I bought the Brother MFC 5890CN when my old reliable HP 1220C bit the dust after nearly 10 years of service. I don't have a phone line so don't know how good the fax is. The other functions of the machine seem to work well. My only problem so far is that my computer and the printer have trouble sometimes communicating. And it is quite annoying to have to manually change the paper depending on the task at hand. I print some 11 x 17 drawings and some 8 1/2 x 11 so I'm constantly having the pull the tray out, change the paper size and move the guides in or out. Other than that, I'm quite satisfied with the quality and speed.

I haven't printed out any pictures yet or used the media slots. I had a little trouble setting up the receiving fax but I believe that's because I have a VOIP phone line and needed to change the settings. I find it somewhat strange that the connection for the USB is underneath the scanner, inside the printer. The only other feature I would have liked is wireless or bluetooth printing capabilites....However outside of these minor details I have not had any problems and it was a good deal and quality for the price of an all-in-one printer!

Here's what I'm dealing with right now. I need to print a black and white document, and I can't, because I'm out of BLUE ink. That's right. You need to keep all of your ink cartridges full (little left is not enough) or you cannot access the basic features of your printer that don't even rely on the color ink. Of course, this is to force you to buy ink you do not need. To make matters worse, this printer often cycles itself which wastes ink in the name of cleaning. So, even if you don't print, you'll be going through color ink like you can't believe- and when you run out, the printer shuts down and repeats the same error message over and over- refill Cyan, or Yellow, or Magenta.Besides this awful problem, the printer is very slow, cannot handle duplex, and is larger than it needs to be. Also, printing envelopes is extremely annoying as you have to unpack the entire paper tray to load one in.Consumer Reports was right- LOOK ELSEWHERE!

After a month's use, I have found this to be a great little machine for my home use. It does everything very well, including scanning old photographs and creating digital images which are as good as those taken with a digital camera. I haven't put the machine through any "rough" use yet and haven't printed enough materials to know just how the ink consumption will do. Overall, I really like the machine and would recommend it for home use.

I was very unhappy with my Brother Printers. I bought 2 exact same printers. Both had the same broken mechanism that allowed printing with the black ink cartridge.I got a brand new one directly from the Brother company for one, but could not for the other one--too long after the purchase date. I was very disappointed!

After price shopping at the local office supply stores, this was by far a super deal on Amazon! Even one that claimed to match prices, wouldn't...claimed their price match policy didn't include internet places like Amazon.Add in free shipping and I was sold! Even with free standard shipping, it arrived in 3 days. Set up was quite painless...even the wireless part, but then again, I'm somewhat familiar with wireless networking.It's fast, accurate and does all it's supposed to do at an incredible price.

I had an All-In-One HP that did almost everything I wanted and I was happy with it until it finally died. I decided to get a different brand just for a change. At the top of my list was wireless to connect to my laptop. I decided on this Brother MFC-885cw Color Inkjet Multi-Function Center.I use to have a cordless phone/answering machine hooked up to my HP. Now, I do not need it because the Brother has them built in which saves space. This machine has so many features and functions that most people simply would never use them all. Although, it is nice to have those things just in case you need them.Features: This is a printer, copier, fax machine, scanner, answering machine, photo printer, phone and memory card reader.Setup: The manual is detailed and informative. However, because this machine can do so much it can be a little intimidating. However, I strongly recommend you read the manual to see what the numerous settings do. After reading the instructions, I set my preferences from the menu button. Then I set up the wireless in less than two minutes. I installed the software and I was up and running. The whole setup process took about 15 minutes. Just follow the set-by-step instructions, and you should not have any problem.Printing: The print quality and speed are good to above average. However, the ink takes forever to dry on glossy paper.Scanner: You can scan different file formats to your computer or memory card. This too seems to work well.Copier: Make copies from the flatbed glass or sheet feed tray. Copy quality is comparable to many other copiers on the market. Not too bad, but not great either.Card reader: You can plug in one of 5 different types of memory cards to preview then print your photos.Fax: You have different options and methods for sending and receiving faxes. A major function is the Fax Preview. This comes in very handy when sending more than one page. It shows you the fax on the LCD and tells you how many pages it scanned. This is helpful because you can see if it scanned all the pages. And if not, you can see which page it missed. Then you have the option to send the fax as is then fax the page it missed. Alternatively, you can rescan all the pages again to see if it scans all of the pages. The one drawback is that the sheet feeder only holds up to ten pages. Therefore, if you want to send more than ten pages, you have to send more than one fax.Bottom Line: This has several machines all in one small package at a reasonable price and is well worth giving it a test drive.

We love the wireless capability. Now we don't have to have a computer on to print. It automatically goes to sleep to save power. You can hide it anywhere and move it if you want. Ours stays in the dining room which we barely use and if we have company we just unplug it and put it in a closet with no mess left behind.It does take a little time to transfer the data and it is so quiet I can't tell if it has started printing. Its almost a pain because I have to get up to check to see if it printed or even began to print.

There may be faster machines out there. Some may offer better quality prints. But if you are looking for a wireless printer that can also scan, fax (a feature I haven't used yet) and copy, then you can't go wrong with the Brother unit. The print quality is good and it is fast enough for my needs. After a month of use, I'm fully satisfied.

We have been using this printer in a small office for about 6 months, and we find it unacceptable.The fax scans all pages before sending, and will not allow you to interrupt a fax once it has started (even the power button is disabled). Very frustrating if you are having connection issues.If you press copy and start it does nothing because it wakes up in Fax mode.When the ink is low it sends constant popups to every computer on the network.It will NOT PRINT if it thinks the ink is low - this is perhaps the most frustrating issue with this printer.It chooses to clean itself BEFORE printing your job, and self cleaning can take up to 5 minutes.I find the ink usage higher than the HP it replaced.This printer does not have Win98 or Linux drivers, and does not include an HTTP print server.

If you run your business or office out of your home, this is the multifunction machine for you. The feature set is better than any in its price range. Setup is quick and easy using the Quick Setup Guide. Once you're done and you actually get a chance to read the manual and play around with it, you won't believe the features. I set it up on my wireless network, where I have had no problems with any features while using XP Home (desktop) or Vista Premium (laptop).The most important features that set this above the rest are as follows:1. Built in CNG (fax) detector - If you have distinctive ring for your fax, you can quit spending the extra dollars per month on it. The MFC-885cw takes the call determines if it is a fax or voice call and then either receives it or transfers the call to the phone. To buy a CNG detector for your phone line usually runs around $100 or so.2. Built in 5.8GHz cordless phone with caller ID - very nice not to have to find a place for another phone in my office. Also works as a wireless base station and 3 more phones can be added.3. Built in answering machine - If the phone isn't answered then the answering machine picks up.4. PC Fax. No need to print a document or PDF file, fill out a cover page and then fax. Just File|Print and change to brother fax v.2 and then enter fax number from your computer and fax is sent without printing anything.5. Wireless networking - Just follow instruction for setting up with your network, load the cd on the computers you want to use with this printer and everything works flawlessly.6. Separate paper tray for holding 4X6 photo paper. Again a very nice feature for not having to remove paper to put in the photo paper.7. Large Widescreen Color Display8. Memory Card Reader9. Separate Color (CYM) Ink Tanks - No need to throw away the entire color cartridge if you run out of Cyan, Yellow, or Magenta just replace the color you're out of. The brother color ink cartridges typically run @ $12 and black @ $20.Print quality for a multifunction is very good. Does a nice job with borderless photo's. If you are looking for outstanding photo quality you should invest in a dedicated photo printer.Scanning features are also good and it comes with OCR software.The only negative is the small capacity of the fax tray (10 pages)Overall, this device has exceeded all of my expectations. This is definitely a printer worth the price.

Wireless setup was easy and exceeded my expectations. I've read many horror stories about how hard it is to set up wireless printing with other printers (most notably HP), so I was expecting to spend a couple of hours setting up this printer. I was pleasantly surprised when it took me under 20 minutes.I love that this printer has separate ink cartridges. Added bonus: each cartridge is relatively inexpensive, which means that I will no longer be cringing at the Staples counter whenever I need to purchase ink.Printed and scanned documents are clear and crisp; the copy looks just as good as the original. I haven't had a chance to test the photo printing functionality yet but, based on the overall reviews for this product, I don't anticipate any problems.I've had this printer for only a couple of days (hence the 4-star review) so I'm not sure how well it will perform in the long run, but from what I've read so far, it seems to be one of the most durable and highly recommended multifunctional printers out there.Looking forward to a long-lasting relationship with my "Brother". :)

I'm no computer genius, but I was able to hookup this printer and network it so I can use it with all of the computers in my house. I love it, It's been easy to use in the month or so I've had it. Ink is very priced very reasonably. I would recommend this printer to anyone looking for a nice printer for home or home office.

Very pleased for the most part. Only problem I had was while it claims to work with a x64 system you have to search internet for drivers and some of the attached software does not work on x64 systems, like the scannersoftware that changes text to digital is not compatable with a x64 so this part does not work. All in all a verygood value. I love the multiple feed scanner as this has saved me many hours work. I loaded this on Windows 7 (x64) pre-release software and it works great!

This review will have to be a work in progress. But just a few days out of the box and so far I am happy.Good:1. installed very easy to the main computer via a USB connection.2. wide format printing in a office friendly machine. Prints and scans up to 11x173. Nice print quality for text4. for a multi-function printer I'm impressed with the quality of photo prints5. great for printing posters6. Black high volume ink cartridge is rated for about 900 pages of text.7. The two paper trays create a higher paper capacity than a lot of ink jet printersBad:1. Ink cost (but what printer really has inexpensive ink).2. Still trying to get the printer to connect to the wireless network. I need to problem solve this some more (likely a user error however the interface is not as clear as I would like)3. this is a BIG printer. - but what else would one expect from a 11x17 printer scanner.So far fairly happy with this printer and am looking forward to experiencing more of it's capabilities

The printer was delivered on time. It is easy to set up. The installation documentation provides all the details. I have one desktop computer connecting to the cable router and two other wireless notebooks. All of them can print to this wireless printer. It is hard to beat the price at this quality and performance.

The printer worked fine for about 4 months, then nothing Black would print. Installed new cartridge even though existing one was 3/4 full. Still no black. Cleaning, alignment, test prints - all no black.Called Brother tech support and they sent me a new printer under warranty. This one worked for two weeks, and guess what - this will not print in Black now either with a new full black cartridge.Not worth the headache. I guess this piece of crap is made in China or something.

I don't know what the previous reviewer was referring to as the Brother MFC 685cw is the newest of the printers and only came out October, 2007.I have waited and waited to see reviews on this machine before I bought it. I did alot of research first but decided to take the plunge! I was very surprised at how heavy the printer is as no other printer weighs as much as this but, I guess because all the features they have packed in, it is heavy. It still has a small footprint and low profile. I took it out of box and put in ink cartridges and set up paper cartridgeI am fairly technical so as I went to connect to two wireless laptops. I found the insructions cumbersome and too lengthy. I gave up fairly early, thank goodness and called 1-877-BROTHER. It was Christmas eve morning. A gentleman asked about my registration and as soon as he took my information he transferred me to a delightful woman in Memphis, Tennessee. She had my printer hooked up flawlessly to two wireless laptops in 20 minutes. I had to find my WEP password so she could get in. It would have taken her less time if she weren't working with me. I couldn't believe how easy it was and I wanted to make sure that it was right. They have both worked perfectly.PROS I love the fact that I can at any time, print something out. It prints beautifully and quickly.I also love the paper cartridge like a copy machine as opposed to as Lexmark, which I have always loved in the past, where they are flapping out the back and getting dusty. Also this machine is 6,000 dpi instead of 4,800 for the Lexmark creating vivid colors.The display is beautiful and easy to use.I scanned a written document and wasn't sure how to put it in a word document so I called 1-877-BROTHER and they told me to go into tools and configure for Word. Great support. I had a Brother fax for 15 years and I finally did something to it so I got dark lines on it but I knew Brother products were great.Also, I read in my research that it is best to buy Brother ink cartridges since the heads are on the printer and the generic ink can ruin the print heads. But I have found the black for 16.88 and color for 11.88. But I'm sure on the internet you can find them for less. Also paid $138.00 for printer, Yes the MFC 685. Also ordered the MFC 465 for my sister for 99. I don't need phone or answering mach but like it for the fax speaker.There is a cartidge inside for 4x6 picturesthat is easy to use.Stand alone fax and picture printer!I got a new camera for Christmas so looking forward to printing pictures.Well I hope this helped. This machine arrived very promptly. The machine does everything as advertised, and was relatively easy to set up and use for the first time. The only "problem" I had was the USB cable connection between the machine and my computer (which was not included) was not a standard USB connection on one end, and the instructions did not indicate that, either. I found out (at an office supply store) that there was another type of USB cable and was able to purchase the correct cable there).

I have been using this printer for almost a year. I have been very frustrated with the ink usage. I print mostly in black and white "fast" mode, which by the way is very poor compared to other manufacturers "fast" mode. Even though 90% of my prints are in B&W it still requires me to replace the color tanks at the same time. In addition to that, the color prints I make are mostly company proposals which only uses yellow and brown color- the machine will say "replace: cyan, magenta, yellow and will not function until you replace all three, even though the colors tanks are visibly more that half full, some three quarters. Im convinced that the machine just counts the amount of prints you make, then says to replace all cartridges regardless of the amount of actual ink it has left. I have been stuck with this machine because every time i have to replace cartridges, i have faxes in memory (which will not print until you replace all 4 cartridges) even though you are just trying to print a B&W fax and the color tanks are still mostly full!

First of all I should say that the print speed is fairly slow, don't expect to get anywhere near the speed that Brother claims, but it prints well and so far the ink has lasted a long time. I wanted to wait until after I replaced the ink to write a review but I just don't print that much and the ink is still showing full on the screen.The scanner is very good, the screen is excellent and the phone is actually really good too. I like how the handset has it's own speakerphone as well as the base unit's speakerphone. The menu of the handset can be a tiny bit awkward but I don't use it at all. The volume is easy to adjust with dedicated buttons on the keypad and the sound quality and range are very good.The printer/fax option is fine, the fax is simple and easy to use and the printer makes easy to read prints. I love the hidden trays for the paper and even 4X6 photo paper, brilliant. I print so rarely that the paper in my old machines used to get dusty and curl over on the top of the feed tray, but this printer keeps the paper flat and enclosed out of sight. plus you don't have to remove and readjust to print on 4X6 photo paper since there is a separate feed and compartment for that. The features of this printer can not be beat for the price.

I typically don't give anything five stars but felt this product warranted it. I saw this printer on sale for $79 at Office Depot. When I went to buy it, an employee at Office Depot talked me into the $179 HP C6280 Photosmart printer. I took the Photosmart printer home but before opening read some mediocre reviews here on Amazon and took it back and got the Brother.This printer delivers well on what I was looking for such as a wireless connection, scanning, copying and photo printing. The only setup issue was when I was configuring the wireless connection, initially I couldn't print from my computer. However, I rebooted my computer and then it worked fine (not sure why).The Office Depot guy who initially talked me out of the Brother printer was adamant that Brother ink quality was "terrible". However, I printed a few pictures on the sample Brother photo paper and they came out terrific. I'm sure someone with a more keen eye could nitpik the accuracy of the colors on the photos but to my untrained eye the colors look very good.In summary I'm pleasantly surprised how well this printer works, especially for the reasonable cost.

I chose this all-in-one over the comparable Epson and Canon models because it was a machine that did what it said without a lot of fancy gimmicks. After using it for 6 months now, I'm glad I made the right choice.Pros:1. It's a solid, well built machine that has held up well.2. The drivers are simple and don't take up a lot of computer resources (you can even skip installing the extra features or install them and just open the program when you need to scan, etc). Unlike the HP I used to have, you can actually just install the printer and scanner driver if you choose, rather than 1 gig of bloated software just to print a letter.3. Generic print cartridges work just fine (no proprietary chips like Canon and Epson that make it hard to refill or use generic ink).4. The auto document feeder for the scanner is nice (and you can scan straight to PDF with the software).5. Newtorking is easy and works well when connected to a router (I have mine set up on my home WiFi network and can print from any computer on the network).Cons:There really aren't many for me:1. The fax feature isn't something I use, but for the most part it doesn't cause any problems.2. The copy feature could have more options (scaling, choosing a selection area to copy, etc).Overall, I recommend it as a good machine that does what you want it to without the seemingly fancy but frustrating features of other all-in-ones.

After looking through reviews and googling 'best all in one', I rarely saw Brother mentioned. It was either Canon, HP or Epson. So I first purchased the Epson Aristan 800. The first unit was defective with an error loop, so I replaced it with another. It's a nice printer overall with the added bonus of touchscreen, but the fax functions were poor, the paper tray was flimsy and it was a bit too large for where I wanted to put it.So I returned it, walked around the printer isles for an hour and came upon the Brother MFC-790cw. It had wifi, touchscreen, a phone, a real dial pad, a smaller footprint and a much cheaper price.So after using it for a week, i'm really happy with the purchase. The wifi software was very easy to setup, and I had no problem installing it in Windows beta 7 unlike the Epson Artisan 800. Receiving and sending faxes is easy as pie. Normal and glossy photo print qualities are very good. And the unit overall looks solidly built.The only two drawbacks I found was the above normal noise and the below normal print speed. But i'm not running a business with the need to print volumes of documents in a short time, so it's not really much of a concern.This is an excellent AIO for personal use at a great price.

never recieved printer seller would never contact me after 4 emails Do not oreder from this company they are a rip off company i am suprised Amazon has them on their web site . mkes you thank about Amazon themself?Brother MFC-440CN Photo Color All-in-One Printer with Networking

I've only had this for about 2 weeks but so far I love it.I cannot say how durable or reliable it will be but here's what I can say:1) it worked great right out of the box and was not difficult to hook up2) it prints much faster than my Canon Pixma3) the scanning software is easier to use than my Canon Pixma4) it has a fax which - again - worked the first time, very easy5) it SEEMS to use less ink than the Canon or the Epson I had before that (you do have to buy 4 ink cartridges not just one, but you can buy only the one you need, you don't have to buy all at once)6) You can turn it off and when you call for it by clicking PRINT on a document or photo, it turns itself on - very nice! (and it comes on quickly)This may or may not be a downside: the manual is very thick and there are lots of options. I haven't even felt like going through them all and I figure I may never do so unless I need something to work a certain way that does not, as it is, out of the box. I did have to set a few things on the menu, like turning off the ringer of the fax, but that was easy.My ONE complaint is that the scan screen is smaller than the pixma, so if you have a document or picture larger than about 11x14 (not sure the exact size - see the specs) then it won't work for you. The Pixma had a larger screen.All in all, if this thing gives me 2 years of good service I will be satisfied.So far, I would give it a hearty recommendation.

I barely used my Brother 465. When I put in replacement ink for the first time the unit would not work.When I called Brother for help they took over 20 minutes asking me for all my personal info then refused to help me get my barely used unit working. They are set up to discourage the customers. They will not back up there equipment. I give them a Failure rating and i am so annoyed with there discouraging tactics that I have decided to boycot them!!! To all that read this, Please stop buying Brother products!! They will suck all the money out of you. This is the same reason I boycoted the chrysler car corperation over 10 years ago.They also are crooks and give bad service with plenty of bait and switch tatics. BOYCOT BROTHER !!! There products are inferior. Sincerly, Ross.

Does a few things well: Gives the cat the willies. Holds down paper in a windstorm. Elevates my blood pressure.Relatively simple paper path doesn't jam often but when it does, is deadly to the delicate little switches, stops other plastic parts that are critical to proper function. Mine lasted a little over a year before I retired it and bought an HP.

It is disappointing to see so many who are not aware of features. Brother is one of the few printer companies that do a good job of including a real book (not just manual-on-CD), so it's easy to find out how to operate. Notice the bad reviews stem from one feature the user can't figure out. This is a compact 3-in-1 machine not just a printer. It even does OCR for under $100.As far as functioning without ink, very few modern printers will do this as drums/printheads can be damaged or air bubbles cause many cleaning cycles when running on empty. This is really a non-issue; just get ink. There are TONS of aftermarket inks around-- even under $5. Try that with a new Canon, HP, Lexmark, etc. that are smart chipped. You might as well buy another printer than replace the inks in low cost models that aren't Brother.Mac problems: Get the newest driver off support site. I'm surprised Apple support can't fix this. I've installed several of these without hitches.One caveat: It's good to print several pages each week for any inkjet to keep printhead & tubes from drying. The Brothers are designed to "sip" a bit each day to prevent problems, so they appear to use ink without printing. Just shut it off or unplug.Head cleaning is nothing out of the ordinary.Noise?? See "office machines." Speed? It is average; good for a machine of this class.Brothers are VERY configurable: many options can be locked down as defaults. Functions are available through both the front panel and "Control Center" software. Again, any complaints are from those who don't care enough to glance at the directions.This is a really good machine with tons of features at an extremely low price. It's easy to use for default printing, scanning, and faxing. The alternative supplies are inexpensive.

I had a brother MFC printer but it was not wireless. I had such a terrible time getting the mini=printserver to work with the printer. I finally got frustrated enought to purchase a new WIRELESS printer. As usual, I went with the reviews here on Amazon and once again I was NOT disappointed!!!! I cannot thank the reviewers enough for helping me select this product. It was simply to pair with my laptop. It has worked flawlessly over the past week. I cannot complain at all. The print quality is great, scanning, faxing etc. All terrific. I am extremely please with purchasing this printer. I wish I had done it sooner than I did.

I bought this a few months back at Best Buy. They had some 'super sale' where this was $79.It's a great all around multifunction printer, scanner, copier and fax. I have used it for some scanning - photos only. It was easy and very good. I don't use this for paper scanning is not something I do because I own a great sheet-fed scanner, the Fujitsu ScanSnap.The fax is easy to set up, but I have another dedicated fax - an older brother MFC B&W laser model.What's really good? The color printing. I use it for spot color and small graghs. Anything involved, ink jets are too expensive. I don't plan on doing phot printing. That's what the wholesale clubs and online labs are for.What's excellent? The wireless networking and power save. It shuts off when not in use, and it was so simple to set up on my Verizon Fios home network.The ink replacement is not that bad. I found a generic supplier that is pretty good.

You already know what it does, so I'm just going to comment on some features:+ It works only LAN connected OR Wireless (or USB), but not both. If you have a faster router, it's better to connect it to the router directly.+ It is somehow bigger than a regular MFC. Compared to an Canon MX700 is a couple of inches wider and 6+ inch taller. It fit perfectly where I had my MX700 printer.+ Big plus is that the ink doesn't use proprietary chips. It worked fine with OEM ink, which is a big plus for me, because the canon printers have some issues with their own brand ink.+ The trays are not very easy to reload, but you don't do it often.+ It has a sleep timer to shut it down. It wakes up if you print something. Nice...+ I had some issues installing the drivers. It will install fine, but when printing, I got some errors. I had to delete the printer and reinstall it. The printer has an ip assigned on my router.Just remember, this is for day to day use. It's not a high end scanner or photo printer; don't buy it if you plan on use it that way. Overall, I like more the look and design of the canon printers, but this is more functional. In the long run, this is a better buy for small offices.

I have two MFC-490CW's in my home. These are great quality printers and the price is hard to beat. My favorite feature is the separate ink cartridges. It allows me to replace only the colors I use most. I am very satisfied with Brother printers.

I have two other phones of this type in my home. They work very well.I had a need for a third phone, so I ordered one. This new one is asreliable as the other two I already owned. They're pricey, but if youwant a good reliable phone, this is it.
