I have had this printer for a couple of weeks now and overall I'm very pleased. I'm not big fan of inkjet printers, and the fact that it wasn't a laser printer was my #1 hesitation before purchasing this model. I sat on the fence -- until Amazon.com had it on sale for just under $200, that is, shipped free to my door. Then how could I say no?If what you really want is a printer to output a lot of text documents for business, etc., you probably still want to look into laser printers. This model's big advantage, however, is that it can both print and scan tabloid-size documents (11x17" or A3). If you want that capability, you won't find a laser model for less than ten times the cost of the MFC-6490CW.Bear in mind, this printer really is very big. It's almost as big as a heavy-duty office printer. It won't share a desk with your monitor and keyboard comfortably, and if you use a laptop it will loom over you like a monolith -- so make sure you have space for it.Setup was easy enough, although you may need to be a little savvy to successfully share the printer with several PCs over a network. (I found it was safest to assign a static IP address to the printer and manually configure each PC to search for it at that address, rather than relying on the automatic setup.)Another reviewer said you can't use wireless and wired networking at the same time. To clarify, the printer will only use one network interface at a time -- if you enable the wireless networking on the printer it will disable the Ethernet and vice versa. But it makes no difference; the point is to use whichever interface is most convenient for you. If you plug the printer directly into the Ethernet port on a wireless router, you WILL still be able to access the printer from wireless devices. Likewise, you won't need to buy a wireless card for your desktop PC if you set up the printer on WiFi. Your wireless router will automatically bridge the wired and wireless networks. The printer is just giving you options. As for print quality, sorry folks, text output is NOT as good as a laser. It's not as fast, it's not as sharp, it's not as dark, it's not as crisp -- bottom line, a laser printer is going to yield nicer-looking text documents. The again, text quality is very readable, and normal-quality output on plain paper is quick enough for my needs. I realized that most of my prints are for my own files, or for me to mark up with a pen. Who am I trying to impress? Those of us who can still remember the days of dot-matrix printers should have no complaints. I would consider prints at normal quality mode to be fully acceptable for business use. The text becomes very sharp indeed if you use high-quality inkjet paper and one of the printer's photo modes, but that's too slow and expensive to be practical.I was pleasantly surprised by the graphics output, which I found to be rich, smooth, and clear. Outputting photos to plain paper showed noticeable banding, but that's to be expected. On the other hand, I printed out a document that had lots of areas of flat color and lots of gradients onto high-quality 36 pound matte inkjet paper, and on that job I noticed ZERO, repeat ZERO banding in either the gradients or the flat areas. If anything, the colors came out a little too dark and saturated, but I suspect that I used an overly optimistic print mode for the particular paper stock I had on hand. I have yet to try printing photographs at maximum quality onto glossy photo stocks, but I have no reason to doubt the quality of the output.Brother's "Innobella" inks seem to be a considerable improvement on those of the last inkjet printer I owned. I printed out a page of text on plain paper and on 36-pound inkjet paper, then threw a bunch of water onto the pages. The plain-paper sheet did seem to blur a bit, but not as much as I expected. Black ink seemed to survive the test well, while colors bled quite a lot. On the heavy ink jet paper, however, there was almost no change once the inks dried. I would actually include the sheet that got wet in with other pages in a presentation; it survived that well. Laser printers still have the advantage if you plan to take your prints out in the rain, but prints from this inkjet are no sissies. As others have noted, the printer isn't smart enough to know which kind of paper is in which tray. You need to configure it yourself, either on the panel on the front of the printer or via the configuration software. That's a small price to pay, however, and an example of the many minor compromises that Brother has made to keep the price of this printer at rock bottom. More annoying is the fact that there's no easy way to feed a single envelope without emptying out a paper tray. There is no automatic duplex scanning, copying, or printing, but I have never owned a printer that would do these things. Unlike others, the automatic document feeder (ADF) worked smoothly for me.The scanner was a treat. I had a low-cost tabloid scanner already (Mustek A3 U

The Brother MFC-6890cdw All-in-One with printing, copying, scanning and faxing capabilities has been in daily use in my home office for some time now, and it has proven to be invaluable. The wireless networking has saved my family time and effort. Another feature I really appreciate is the ability to use paper sizes up to 11 x 17. Altogether a sturdy, easy-to-understand and convenient machine.

This was a replacement printer for one that I had that stopped working. It is the exact same model that I had, which I was glad to find on Amazon. I used it a lot and then something went wrong, started making a strange noise. This was in the first couple of weeks. Manufacturer replaced free of charge, and paid for shipping both ways. I'm very pleased with 'new' one and would purchase this again if I needed another printer. I use the scanner feature a lot. Basic printer, scanner - my needs are not complicated. Like most printers, the ink cartridges add up. I don't like that it won't print if one cartridge needs to be replaced, so I have to keep spares on hand at all times. But I was aware of this when I purchased the printer - I had read the reviewed.

I have had this all in one for a few years now and can make these observations. You can adjust the dpi from about 200-600 effectively, the higher resolution slowing your scanning times considerably. It produces good copies and scans to .jpg and .pdf. I do not scan anything but documents (color and bw), maybe the occasional photo. I also fax a lot less than I used to because everyone just scans and attaches nowadays. I have never inserted a CF card or SD card into the machine because I can just email them to Ritz or a dozen other places that do a better job of it. So basically I scan, then email or archive the file or just use it as a copier and a computer printer. It's nice to have a machine that does it all in one and my needs are simple so it works for me. If your needs are more demanding, then open your wallet and move up the ladder. One MEGA complaint for me. When I upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 in October 2009, Brother just blew me off and their support flatly stated there would be no drivers or software written specifically for Win7. Normally, I would not care one bit EXCEPT in Windows 7 there is NO .pdf conversion available. That's right. After scanning and converting docs to pdf files in XP for a long time, Win 7 is only empowered to convert all paper documents to .jpg only. It is still usable but totally sucks that Brother refuses to spend the effort for a patch that would make the machine more functional. PLUS, none of the old software will even install on Win7 so I am left to generic Win7 drivers which lack other small features of the original software as well.Final note: go to inkjetsuperstore.com or some other internet store and stop buying OEM cartridges. After years of experience, trust me they have the same ink volume and duration and quality as the original but instead of spending $75 for 4 cartridges (black, cyan, magenta, yellow), you get 5 cartridges (2 of them black) for $25 which includes shipping. This thing has lasted me a very long time, even without Win7 support from the manufacturer!

The machine's frequent Jamming is my problem. Remove paper & LCD display (which also is barely visible) keeps scrolling message "Print Unable 36. See Troubleshooting & Routine Maintenance in User's Guide" Delete print job, message keeps scrolling. There is no 36 in Troubleshooting section of guide, only a 46 unrelated to jamming problem. Press Stop/Exit & the message keeps scrolling. Press On/Off & machine totally ignores the command & the LCD keeps scrolling it can't print. Only way to make it quit scrolling is to pull the plug & clear the memory. Then before printing next job, it will say Please Wait and it goes thru it's ten minute cleaning mode. Every time it's unplugged & replugged it's wiped memory doesn't know it just cleaned the print heads & does it all over again, using more ink. And then it has to spit out a blank sheet before it's ready to print. Not only then but will shoot out a blank page on it's own whim before printing. My b/w laser Xerox has special single feed for special jobs. I have plenty of special single feed jobs. This machine does not accommodate. The tray is a hassle to handle and load.I have only had it about six months. It was great in the beginning when I printed only letter-sized paper. But I print notecards and the more I use the machine, the worse it gets. It has wasted enormously my time & card stock & plain paper. Brother does not have customer support (Xerox has wonderful online support--or had; haven't had to use the service for over a year). In order to get any clue to a Brother solution, you have to pay an online technician.Oh, yeah. Another thing. The machine stalls at the onset of a print job:the message is "rastertobrother145 has failed" . . . this is when I am printing graphics from my word processor (Pages-Mac). Only clue--raster--assuming to do with graphics--to brother--assuming graphics instructions to printer failed. 145? no clue. Cannot find one on Brother or Apple website or anywhere. Have to unplug machine to clear memory of that too. But after a while it will be back. Nerve wracking. On the good side so far: scanner works fine with my Mac software. Copier is fine for single side; try to manually do double side, paper jam most of the time. More wasted paper. Still does a decent job printing photos. 4x6. And so far has not jammed photo paper. But I need the machine to do more than just print 4x6 photos.Would not recommend the Brother MFC-255CW or any Brother for that matter.

I purchased this printer for a home business. About two months out of the year I simply pound on a printer and its reliability is critical. I had always used HP prior to purchasing this printer and was somewhat skeptical of Brother, but purchased this printer based on the reviews. What I love is the speed, duplex printing and dependability. The copy function is excellent, but the scanning, although it works fine, can't compete with a dedicated scanner. If you print a lot of envelopes, beware that it wrinkles them pretty badly. Overall, if your looking for a workhorse printer/copier, you will not be disappointed. When this printer dies, I will be buying another.

I've had this printer for some 9 months now, and I feel it was an excellent choice. Others admire it, too, and are always showing up with something that needs printing, copying, scanning or faxing.I selected this printer to replace my old HP 1130 which accepted 11x17 paper. This was the only color multifunction ink jet I could find in my price range that does tabloid sizes. It is too big for the average desk and should sit on its own printer stand.I must disagree with some reviews I read. For instance, one person said, "The LED screen is very complicated...changing trays or paper size or reduction is confusing. Too many buttons, too many options....". I don't understand where they're coming from. It couldn't be easier for me. When I want to copy, I just hit the copy button and then the start button. It's just that simple. If I want more than one copy, I select the number from the numerical keypad. For size reduction, press the arrow down button once and you are on the Enlarge/Reduce line. Use the left and right arrow keys to select the amount of enlargement or reduction and press the start key. What could be simpler?"As a copier, it's slow." Yes, it's slower than I'd like, but I remind myself that it is an ink jet printer, not a copier. Large or multiple copy jobs should be performed on a real copier."There is nothing to catch the output pages so very often, especially with legal paper, they land on the floor and you need to figure out the order they belong in." Not true. The top paper tray has a front tab that gets pulled out and up. This keeps the paper from falling out. Try it; it works.I am responsible for printing business cards for several people. Using Avery, I never have any problems with the printer for cards and labels. I did find that greeting cards didn't work well, and I messed up practically the entire box. Those were Office Depot brand, which I suspect caused the problem.I've never had any problem with the automatic document feeder, either, and I use it practically every day. Perhaps those having issues are stacking too much paper in the tray.If you print a lot of photos, I probably wouldn't recommend this for a photo printer. In my opinion, this is really a document printer which you can use occasionally to print images and make a quick copy. If you're a stickler for photo quality, buy something else.I do find this machine sometimes makes noise when I'm not using it. I'll be quietly working at my desk, typing or something, and suddenly I hear a grinding noise. Startled, I look over to the display and see that it is doing some self-cleaning.I also notice the printer On/Off works strangely sometimes. I can sit at my desk for the longest never using the printer and it's still lit up, but other times it's all dark. It usually comes on automatically when I send a document, but sometimes I have to press the On/Off button.I was spending a lot of money purchasing the high capacity ink cartridges from Office Depot. I found a "compatible" supplier on the internet where I could get 12 for the price of one brand name. I did find that some photo colors don't look quite as good, but other than that, the compatible cartridges save a lot of money.Speaking of ink cartridges, whether using the brand name cartridges or compatible ones, I noticed that my family and friends who use printers like Lexmark go through a lot more ink than I do, even though I do a lot more work than them.It is missing a manual feeder. Using the tray for envelopes can be a pain. I prefer to print labels and stick them on the envelopes. It also does not have duplex features, but since this is the only color inkjet multifunction that prints tabloid, it's a matter of which feature is more important to you. The ability to print tabloid size was paramount in my decision to purchase this printer. My printer did include the USB cable and free ink cartridges.Overall, I am quite pleased and feel I made a good choice for my home office printer.

I was skeptical of Brother printers, but after having a miserable experience with HP trying to get a 6380 to work (two broken units delivered; two units returned; 4 hours on phone with tech support), I broadened my search and found consistently good reviews of this printer. I live in a mixed household (Windows and Mac), which also eliminated many competitors. Finding it on sale tipped the scales.Out of the box, the printer is compact, has a low profile, and is a bit sleeker looking than the competitors. Overall workmanship is solid.Only exception is the paper tray which feels a bit flimsy, but nothing that would deter me. There is also no easy way to feed envelopes or letterhead without pulling out the papertray -- and to run envelopes, you need to remove regular paper since the bypass tray is only for photo paper.Fax machine is a nice feature to have and, thankfully, it does not come with a phone handset attachment which would just take up space for no reason.Per the manual, the printer can NOT handle both wireless and wired USB/network connection at the same time. Not a problem for me at all as the unit will only be used via wireless. It is energy star rated and defaults to putting itself to sleep after a period of non-use. Startup out of sleep is very fast when you send a wireless document. I tend to unplug my power strip when I won't be using the computer for a while and was afraid that the settings would wipe, but when I plugged it back in the printer sprang back to life with all wireless configurations intact.Set up was pretty simple. Following the quick start instructions went fine. Found my wireless router, connected, printed test page, no problem. Installed drivers/software on Windows XP, and it looks to be a lot less heavy than HP's full software. Only wrinkle in installation is that it asked me several times to connect/verify the wireless connection (each piece of software plus the hardware basically asked me the same thing a few times... I probably didn't need to enter it so many times, but it wasn't difficult so I decided to be safe). No problems with Mac install either. Very simple.Overall, the set up was easy and quick. Brother could learn a bit from HP in terms of integrating the documentation and the printer set up a little bit better, but that's a minor issue. It was easy and the thing worked right away.Automatic document feeder on top of the machine is a great feature to have in a printer at this level, and it works well. The wireless integration is well done. I was able to print wirelessly immediately, and, quite a pleasant surprise to find that the "scan" feature actually worked as advertised.Scanning was as simple as dropping a document into the feeder, hitting scan, selecting which of my two wireless PCs I wanted to receive the doc, and then hitting start. Seamlessly scanned and dropped the PDF onto my hard drive.Ditto for requesting an OCR of the paper document. OCR quality is pretty amazing. I haven't had experience with desktop/consumer OCR in a few years, so maybe they are all of similar quality now, but I was pleasantly surprised. No formatting came over, but I was able to take a memo sitting on my desk and scan/OCR it in a few seconds. The text dropped into a plain text file and had no errors in text recognition or punctuation.Print speed appears to be slower than the box claims. I haven't tested it, but it feels slower than a lower quality HP deskjet it replaced. Could be a function of the wireless throughput. I'm not terribly concerned since this is for a low-volume home setup. Print quality is good, not fantastic (I will play with settings and see if I can't improve that). Photo prints onto plain paper are not as clear as HP.I am also very happy with the low noise level. The printer is quiet (much more so than my prior HP inkjet) and it doesn't rattle and shake and rumble like my prior HP inkjet. If you're having trouble getting the photo paper bypass to work, I had to resort to the manual. You need to physically move the bypass tray forward and lock it into place -- there is no software setting or configuration switch in the print properties. (You can select paper type and all the normal options there, but not the bypass.) Then when done, you pull the paper tray out and physically move the bypass tray back into standby position. At first I was annoyed, but given the frequency of printing via the bypass, I don't care. And I figure not having two paper paths probably means less chance of paper jams. The model higher than this one is essentially the exact same unit but with a phone handset and a built in digital answering machine. I didn't think that was worth an extra $50, but if you need an answering machine it might be worth it to save footprint. So far so good. I highly recommend this printer. For the price, features, ease of set up, size, and quiet, it is a very good deal.I had tried the HP 6380 which had (to me) slightly better print quality, bu

I wrote this review approximately one month after setting up the printer. I bought this printer in December when all the sales were going on. So yes, it's a great printer for the 79.00 price at that time. This is my second Brother printer. I am a home user. My brother had several other brands of printers over the years, except Brother, so I got the grand tour of printers, LOL. They all had problems, so before I bought my first Brother printer I did a little research and got the MFC 210c. I used it for nearly 5 years before it died on me, but since I didn't pay but 89.00 for it brand new at OM, I'd say I got my money's worth from it. It was a great printer. Both color and black and white printing. I never had a problem with it until it suddenly died. I don't have a problem with the speed of a printer, but I'd say it was a fairly fast printer. The images were always sharp and clear and the color saturation was always good. This new model is very similar to the older model in that it has a small footprint, it's not tall and clunky. I like the auto cleaning so I don't have to worry about the printer heads drying out. The only thing I don't care for on this one is having to take the entire paper tray out to put paper in. It's easy to do, but it's an extra step when I'm busy. The tray pulls out easily, and slips back in easily. I just scratched my head over that one. Why change the paper feed design, and add an extra step? I haven't tried the paper feed gadget on the top yet. It's a fairly quite machine, much quieter than the Lexmark I borrowed until this one arrived. The Lexmark clattered and chattered, until I thought there was something wrong with it, it also gobbled ink like a bottomless pit. This model has a very nice, brightly illuminated color LCD display that tilts up, and it's big enough to read, YAY! This is a great improvement over the small monochrome LCD displays of the older models. The various function buttons are placed logically, and they're of a nice size, and far enough apart that even someone with big fingers won't press two at the time. The cord is just the right length, not to short, and not too long. You don't get a USB cable in the box with the printer. I'm sure most people have one around if they've had a computer for a while. If not then buy a USB cable before this printer arrives so you won't be frustrated when you open the box, and begin set up.The set up was quick, simple, and easy, even with my CD/DVD burner on the fritz. I was able to go to the Bother website and download the installation package with no problems whatsoever. It took less than twenty minutes from opening the box to printing a test page, and that included downloading the set up software from the Brother website. The instruction book is clear. The menus on the printer itself are easily accessed, and the set up for time, date and etc, are easy to follow with no muss or fuss. I don't use the fax function, so I haven't hooked that up and tried it yet.The scanner, and copier, are easy to use. I can scan and copy from my computer screen to a file, or an email. The control center on the computer is easy to use. I like the Brother Creative Center. It takes you to the Brother site, and they have free templates for a lot of different things, like calendars and what have you. You can even use your own photos to make the calendars and cards. That's very easy and convenient, no extra software to download:)The ink cartridges are easier to install on this model than on the MFC 210C. Just open the ink cartridge compartment door, located on the front of the printer, pull the old cartridge out, and slide the new cartridge into the matching color slot. No more lifting the scanner bed to replace cartridges. It also has four ink cartridges to save you money; black, yellow, cyan and magenta. You only need to replace the ink cartridges that are empty. I just wish it took the same cartridge as the MFC 210C, as I have about ten cartridges left from that one;>The first test page was perfect. I've already printed out receipts from online bill paying, and purchases. I've printed recipes with pics:) I've printed emails, and text files. All in all it looks like this printer is going to be just as good a printer as the last one was. It seems to be as frugal on ink usage also.I haven't tried to set it up on my wireless network yet, so I can't give you a decent report on that function. But during set up, the very first screen gives you that option before it continues on with the entire set up. Either LAN, Home Network, or wireless.I also haven't used the photo printer yet, so I can't give you a report on that either. Hopefully there are others leaving reviews that can say something about those functions I haven't tried out yet.I guess that's it, I'm trying to think of anything I've left out. I guess I can come back and edit this later if I think of anything else. All in all, for the price I paid, which was 79.00 here on Amazon, it's an excellent printer. This

This is a great printer--I give it 5 stars because it works AS ADVERTISED. This is HIGH PRAISE compared to the 6 other printers I've owned over the last 5 years (1 Brother laser, 1 Samsung, 4 HP's; only the Brother laser is still in use; to be fair, one of the HP inkjets still functions, but I have chosen to stop paying $60 every 4 months for ink). In looking for a replacement color printer, my search criteria were high-capacity ink cartridges, fax capability, ADF (auto document feeder) for scanning, and networkability. (Ideally, installation would be automated and wouldn't load my computer with megabytes of software that I didn't want...sigh). I first looked at the Brother MFC-490CW which, on sale, would have been 60% of the price of the MFC-5890CN. Second, I looked at the HP J6480 AIO. I am at the end of my rope with HP printers (I could write pages on this) but it looked at it for 2 reasons: (1) 2 different sales people at 2 different stores said over and over that the HP had much better image/print quality than the Brothers and (2) it does have a high capacity ink cartridge option (74XL, 75 XL). Then I looked at the MFC-5890CN which I decided to buy. I did consider the Brother MFC-6490CW, but it would have been an extra $50 to $100 dollars and it's HUGE (too big for my work space).I think the Brother MFC-490CW is an awesome printer. It has good ink capacity (LC61 cartridges) but does not work with the high-capacity cartridges (LC65 series 25% more expensive for double ink) that it's big brothers can use (5890CN and 6490CW). I REALLY WISH that the MFC-5890 I purchased included the 6x4 photo paper bypass tray that the MFC-490CW has (my only disappointment with it! maybe Brother will offer an accessory tray with that feature). It also has built-in wireless networking, which sounded like a big deal but, as I discuss below didn't add anything--I am using the FULL capabilities of the MFC-5890CN wirelessly through my wireless router as I explain below. I decided to go with the MFC-5890CN over the MFC-490CW mainly so that I could use the LC65 high-capacity ink. Printing on 11x17 paper may also be useful to me. (It can NOT scan 11x17 documents as another review said. I guess that person never looked at it in the store as it's obvious that the scanner glass is only 8.5 by 11 and not 11 by17 like the MFC-6490CW.) It also has double the warranty period, 2 years, and double the duty cycle--I hope this means it really will last longer but only time will tell.I looked at the HP J6480 AIO very carefully. The price was the same as the MFC-5890CN. This was the only similar HP printer that I found that had high-capacity ink. It has built-in wireless networking. It does NOT have a color LCD screen. To test the image quality, I went to the store and made color copies of the same test documents (pictures my children made) with the HP J6480 and the MFC-5890CN, both on highest quality. The Brother MFC-5890CN was very much better than the HP. Do the test yourself--my Staples in town has all the printers plugged in and loaded with paper. The only benefit of the HP J6480 is an automatic two-sided printing feature. However, this isn't too great a feature with inkjet as there is a pause to "let the ink" dry before it flips the page. Again, I tried this at the store--it was really annoying b/c if you only copy 1 side, the printed page pops out, the printer status screen says "Please wait, ink drying" or something like that, a few seconds pass, it sucks the page back in to flip it over, and then you can have your copy. If I want to duplex to save paper, I'll just use my laser. So I bought the MFC-5890CN. I have had several nice surprises since. First, it prints GREAT! photos using the ink provided. I bought the Brother "innobella" 4x6 glossy photo paper ($5 for 20 sheets), put it in the paper tray, put the memory stick from my camera into the printer card-reader slot, selected the picture I wanted on the LCD, clicked print, and after about a minute, out popped at beautiful borderless 4x6 glossy picture that, to my eye, was about as good as any photo I've seen (from another printer or Walgreens). I was very, very, very happy how easy this worked and how good the picture looked. It worked just as well using "Picture Bridge" which just means you connect the camera straight to the printer with a USB cable. Also, I used the built in red-reduction feature and I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked (this was a portrait type picture with one person's face in the picture). I can't vouch for pictures using other photo paper--you see a lot of postings that it's better to match paper and ink. Second, I really like the Paperport software. I can scan directly into PDF and organize my files easily into different folders. Third, the color LCD screen is extremely useful, especially with direct photo printing. After 2 weeks, there are only two negatives--(1) I wish it had a built-in tray for photo paper

the quality of the of my documents is at best, average, I also have a laser printer which I believe is producing above average quality print-outs. But realizing that the purpose of this unit is multi-faceted it does address my over-all needs in terms of consistency and performance.

The very large scan size is wonderful, as is the very large print paper size available. Scan quality is excellent. Faxing is easy and fast. Print quality is excellent WHEN all the heads are fully functional (not clogged). However, the print heads on my machine clogged easily and early, some never to print again even with multiple cleanings. The scan-to-document feature has no allowance for newspaper multi-columns.Other than those two complaints, the MFC has been excellent, but those two items are extremely important to me. I have used after-market ink in several printers with no problems, but in this printer I have problems. Maybe Brother ink would have worked better, but with the volume of ink I use, I can buy another printer for less overall expense than buying Brother ink.FOLLOW-ON REVIEWOnly weeks before my warranty expired, I brought my Brother to a repair shop, and they replaced the print head free under an unpublicised "free-replacement" policy due to known printer head defects. The repair shop also said after-market ink works fine in this printer.I NOW GIVE IT 4 STARS. The ink cartridges often showS low before they are really low, and sometimes more than one sheet of paper is drawn up at a time, but overall this is a pretty good printer/scanner/fax machine.

I purchased the DCP-8085DN as a stand alone copier for a church to print bulletins. When deciding to purchase I compared several makes and models. The Brother DCP-8085DN had the features I wanted (primarily direct print and duplex) for a decent price. So far I have printed about 500 pages duplex. Only misfeed was on two occasions the 2nd tray picked up two sheets, I just need to be sure to fan the paper better. Just note that it does not have fax capabilities like many multi-function printers (if you need fax see its near twin the MFC-8480DN similar as this one but 1 yr warranty and auto sheet feeder does not scan duplex).Pros:- Copies and prints fast - 32ppm (one catch see below)- Reduces and enlarges- Auto duplex - prints both sides- Direct print from USB thumb drive (only PDF & JPEG files)- 3 year limited warranty- High yield toner - rated 8,000 pages at 5% coverageCons:- May need to take to factory service center to add connector for optional 2nd paper tray (see my review on the LT5300)- When using direct print from USB thumb drive for multiple copies, it processes the document from the drive for each copy. I print 100 copies of 2 pages double sided for bulletins. It takes 20 seconds for each copy to print: 15 seconds to process and 5 to print both sides. For me this is a big design oversight and why it get 4 starts and not 5.Bottom line: fast copier/printer with many features at a good price. I will recommend to others just be aware of the issues noted since they will not affect everyone.

OUt of the box setup time wasn't too bad since I explained steps for my wifewho just had a Kodak All-in-one die from printhead failure. The hardware was easy but the software package took a while and I didn't see the option to select single program features to install separately, it was all or none. I manually added it to our network and all computers found it right away. Good. Since the FAX MENU was always on we had to dig through the book to learn how to turn it off since we are not using it for fax. Apparently if you do not have a phone plugged in it will keep requesting fax setup input until you turn it off. In the book.We fiddled with COLOR CAPTURE for some time as we kept missing how the INDEX PRINT was assigning numbers to pictures page by page. A little confusing so I recommend print the index sheet first time around using a small number of photos. It is too much work to go through 174 photos to find one or two you really want to work with. Also found the media reader function does not detect camera memory cards when plugging camera in directly, you must remove memory card. Bad. The front load USB is a nice feature though. Just remember if using the LCD screen thumbnails will search for some time finding photos in a large collection. Bottom line is to organize and manage your photo files well and know exactly what you are looking for before using PHOTO CAPTURE since it won't CAPTURE from photos on your PC.Lastly, the color prints were not as vivid and bright as expected using default settings. We had to tweak brightness and color enhancement 1 to 2 steps depending on photo. I will be inheriting this MFC from her since she is not pleased with print color and clarity. I bought a printhead replacement from Kodak for her 3 year old All in One 5100 model and it is up and running again. Even though I don't care for Kodak support which is horrendous and reviews of their All in One printheads revealed a 31 percent failure rate of new and replacement printheads I got lucky and the new replacement made it work like new again. Yay!!!

The other reviewers are spot on. This is by far the worst printer with which I've had to deal and unfortunately, I bought not one but TWO for both my home offices. The ink ran out about the same time and for the life of me I cannot figure out why it won't read the replaced ink catridges. Both machines are having this difficulty and I find it suspect that it's the same problem. Brother created a monster when they put this machine on the market. It should be set on fire or thrown into the river.I went so far as to my change my settings to print only in black and it still won't work. I'm more than annoyed that I have to replace not one - but two - printers plus spend additional money on cartridges. When it actually worked, it was okay. I hadn't run into problems. When all is said and done, I'm going to beat this thing like a redheaded stepchild.

I hate this machine. I was absolutely robbed by Brother with all of this machine's seductive features, but will NEVER buy another Brother product. This thing blows thru ink like it should be in rehab and does not perform ANY function without every color of ink cartridge being full...even if you just want to scan or print in black or white. Piece of shite! I have wasted so much time because of this f-ing machine and wish I could return it, but I'm beyond the return period. F-you Brother!

I've had this machine for a couple of years of pretty heavy use and I am very happy with this Brother. I love the wireless feature so I can print from several household computers. I can even print from my mobile phone using the iPrint brother app from the droid marketplace. I only buy aftermarket cheap ink cartridges from amazon and ebay and they run well under a $1 each so the cost per page must be about the cheapest around. I just stocked up on ton of ink so if the machine dies before I run out, I would buy another brother machine that uses the same ink.The auto document feed system is the most reliable of the low cost machines I have used. We commonly have to scan to a single PDF file a long contract of 15 to 20 pages and it works great. The only minor criticism I have is that you have to watch how you load your document into the feed system or flat bed because the fax, copy, and scan may have different requirements in order that you don't scan or fax the blank side of a document or have it upside down. I have solved this by adding a sticky note by the feeder but it would be nice if they would have added a easy to read graphic so I would not have to add modifications. Minor problem and maybe maybe I'm the only dummy that has this problem.

I won't be buying another Brother printer if this is the standard. First, the network cable doesn't attach to the exterior like one would expect. Instead you have to snake the cable through a tight channel carved out below the scan deck. Why?The software is horrible. Scanning multiple documents opens separate MS Paint windows with bitmap documents of the scan. If this were 1995 that would be great but is pretty weak compared to other brands. Why would I want to scan each page into a separate document? It has a email attach option but appears to want to use Outlook Express even though I am using Outlook Exchange. Whatever. On the plus side the machine is compact and works well even though the software sucks.

Beware - all brother printers come with features designed to maximise your purchase of ink cartridges.1. They self-clean all the time - even when not being used - wasting ink2. The cartridges have a clear window half way down which a light source in the printer uses to detect if the cartridge is empty - only this window is half way down the cartridge so it's still half full - put some electrical tape or use a felt pen to block the light.3. If one of the cartridges is showing empty the answering machine stops working (solve with tip 2 above)4. Despite their attempts to prevent you, it is possible to refill the cartridges using refill ink and a syringe. Use the end of a retractable ballpoint pen (with the ball retracted) to push in the plunger on the air vent at the top of the cartridge and push the syringe into the bottom ink hole - fill with 20cc of ink at a time.5. If you get the "cannot detect ink cartridge" message, open the ink cover door and clean the ink fill area with a tissue dipped in alcohol6. The ink used in cleaning goes into a well filled with wadding that gradually fills up. You can buy wadding refills and you can also reset the ink use counter by putting the printer into maintenance mode.7. Cleaning the printer head is almost impossible without disassembly of the machine but you can try using cleaning fluid in an old cartridge and flushing it through.8. Brother don't make ink and there is nothing special about their inks

This printer is perfect for our needs. I haven't had a single problem out of it yet.We homeschool and I use a lot of resource that need printing out. I also print out shipping labels. Plus I'm a fan of e-books and print out many of them.It is large for a home printer, but it does the job. I love the duplex printing, the fact that it holds so much paper, I can print, copy, fax, scan, everything, with ease.I bought this printer because we do print a LOT of stuff for homeschooling 2 kids. Ink cost was a HUGE factor in my printer shopping. I was able to find ink refills for this printer for under $1/cartridge here on Amazon. After having a lexmark with it's computer chips in the cartridges that kept me from saving money by refilling them, I am so pleased with this printer! No need to bother with refills when you can get cartridges for $1 each! This printer is worth every penny-I love it!UPDATE: I've had this printer for about a year and a half now. If I were going to marry an inanimate object-this printer would be it! I tell all my homeschooling friends about this printer. It. Is. AWESOME! I haven't had the first problem out of it and the fact that cartridges for this printer are currently running like $0.64 each, makes me giddy!I just found a free math curriculum online-I didn't think twice about printing two sets of workbooks and 2 sets of lesson plans for my children, because ink cost doesn't stop me printing out resources we can use now! I used to weigh the cost of ink against how useful something would be if I printed it out, not anymore, if I think it might be the least bit useful, it's worth the cost of ink!

So keep buying cartidges...Or you can throw into bin.

At first, i really enjoyed the printer. The print quality was great for the price, even the photo prints came out very nice. But after a few months, the small problems became apparent. It frequently says that an ink cartridge is low or empty, even after I replaced them all, and didn't use the printer for a awhile. That is bad enough by itself, but it makes it worse because if one cartridge is empty you can't do anything else. If Cyan is empty, you cant print , even if you are only printing something in black/white. I changed the settings on my computer and pressed the button for black/white on the printer, but it just keeps beeping and showing that Cyan is empty. This is very annoying because i don't print that often, so whenever I do need to, it says something is empty, and I am stuck. This has happened the last 4 times I tried to print something.

Update: May 2011 - This printer is still going great with no problems. I have not even had to replace the factory supplied ink yet. Still happy!~~~~I bought this printer just this month so time will have to tell. So far, it's perfect for my small business needs which are pretty minimal except I do a lot of 11x17 (ledger paper size) printing for my clients. Here is my experience thus far:PROs* The item arrived safe and on the 2nd day after ordering it, even with all the snow we had.* It is a big printer so it needs its own space. Mine is close by my desk because you have to get check the printer to make sure the setting are ready for any special printing needs, such as switching from 8x10 to 11x17 or scanning.* Set-up went smoothly and wireless connected without a problem. We have 4 laptops wirelessly connected to the printer.* The scan glass can accommodate 11x17 which is pretty nifty and there no complaints with the quality.* It has a USB and photo card ports - all work just fine.* I LOVE the separate paper tray for ledger paper!* Print quality is perfect for me. I design detail drawings and they often have very small print. I have no problems with quality of the dpi, especially for this price. I was a little skeptical before testing the printing and I am surprised by the high quality this printer puts out.* Photo Printing: Well, I am not a photographer. However, I have printed some 8x10 color photos as gifts on glossy photo-finish paper and again, I am pleased with the results.* Ink replacements are available on Amazon. Buy only Brother brand while you have your warranty. Using generic ink will void your warranty if anything goes wrong. There are high-yield replacement cartridges available that are very economical.CONs* It's not a true play-and-play set-up, but I am lazy and like my technology to everything for me.* It is made of hard plastic components and the trays feel fragile. I am extra careful to try and not snap anything when sliding trays in and out for paper refills.* The size could be prohibitive if you do not have space. This is not a desk-top printer.

Please don't buy this printer/fax. I own a small home-based business, and bought it because I needed the fax. I don't print in color at all. In fact, I've printed less than 5 color pages in the last six months. But I've had to replace the yellow cartridge twice, and 2 of the other colors once. Each at $15.Once it's used up all the color in an ink cartridge, it stops working at all. You can't print in black and white. You can't even send a fax! The machine was on sale at a really great price. Now I know why:Brother is getting your money by using up the ink and keeping you coming back for more. I thought maybe this was a problem with just my machine, but have found many more similar reports on the internet. The machine cleans the heads constantly and uses ink in the process. If you turn it off, then it cleans the heads for an extra long time each time you turn it on again. If you want to throw away $15 every few months on ink you never used, this might be the machine for you. Otherwise, I suggest you get an HP.The next time this thing needs ink, it's going in the trash. I refuse to sell it to someone else who'll be giving away money to Brother every other month.

Excellent printer if you wish to waste money on ink. It amazed me how often it prompts you to replace ink cartridges, even though I had just recently replaced them and didn't use color printing that much. I started to wonder why was Ink going low that fast and decided to disarm the damn thing and to my surprise I found at least three plastic containers with foam inside in wish this crap was actually dumping all the ink whenever the Printer felt like to self "clean" the cartridges on startup or before a print job. I took the cartridges and opened them just to find the cartridges still had ink and a bunch of air bubbles but the dam thing would refuse to print even when three out of the four cartridges had enough ink to print."I WILL NEVER BY A BROTHER PRINTER AGAIN".

This MFC machine has decent features for a machine in its price range. But more than any other printer I've owned, this one is designed to blackmail you into purchasing ink -- even when it's not needed.I have never, I say again, NEVER, printed a single color document from this printer. I have no need to. I purchased it primarily as a scanner and outgoing fax machine. I only use the printing function for those rare occasions when I receive incoming faxes (maybe two or three times a year). And yet, on every single occasion when I needed to print an incoming fax, I had to replace at least one of the color ink cartridges. Why? because if any one of the color cartridges is "empty," the machine will not print -- not even in black and white! Although there is a "grayscale" print option, it will not print in grayscale if any of the color ink cartridges are empty.Because it incessantly "cleans itself," those cartridges are likely to be empty even if nothing useful has ever been printed. The only way to disable the auto-cleaning is to turn the machine off, which is unacceptable for a fax machine.Perhaps even more annoying, when the Brother software detects that a print cartridge is low, it periodically flashes a pop-up in front of your face, even if you're not trying to use the printer, with the frequency of the pop-ups increasing the longer you ignore them. Yes, it can be turned off, but that also disables the scanning functionality. This is the printer that convinced me to never, ever, ever purchase another Brother product. Neither do I purchase the ink from Brother: I buy it off-market, and would do so even if it were *more* expensive than genuine Brother ink. If the day comes when I can no longer get off-brand ink for this machine, I will use it as a boat anchor. I really do hate Brother that much for the way they try to strongarm you to buy ink for this printer. In summary, the Brother MFC-490CW should have been named the Luca Brasi model. It holds a gun to your head and forces you to sign on the line -- in this case, the line of a credit card receipt -- every time you have to quench its insatiable thirst for ink. Buy this printer, and you're no longer a Brother customer. You're a member of the family: And every time you think you're out, they'll puuulllll you back in.

If all you are doing is printing documents from an application like Word or spreadsheet, then I guess this printer is okay. However if you plan to interface with other applications like on-line postage printing then do not buy this printer. Even in typical applications this printer jams frequently. I print CD labels and jacket covers and they constantly jam. Even when feeding one at a time. When trying to print envelopes from Stamps.com the printer constantly fails to recognize the paper size even though I go into the printer menu and set the paper size to the envelope. I get the "wrong paper size" message. I called customer support and they said "it must be a problem with Stamps.com". Even though every other printer I have owned worked, this one doesn't, it is a Stamps.com problem. Hmmmm. In all fairness this printer is a workhorse for simple printing. The ink time is totally underwhelming. I am constantly buying ink. And it does not come with one black cartridge and one color cartridge. You actually have four cartridges to buy. And it constantly needs at least one cartridge. I do print a lot, but other brands that I have owned lasted longer. Also the printer is horrid for printing full sized pictures. The print quality is terrible. Again, this printer is okay for printer text and spreadsheet files. The operation could not be more user hostile. My last printer, in order to print an envelope all I had to do was put an envelope in the special envelope slot. The printer did the rest. This one, you have to adjust the guides in the paper tray, then go into the menu and set the paper size. This is still not a guaranty, as it may or may not work on any given day with any given software. In conclusion, while this printer does perform in some instances, there are much better multifunction printers on the market. You would do well to pass this one up and check one of the others.

I read other reviews so I knew this could be a problem (but was hoping it wouldn't be!) It doesn't destroy the envelope, it just creates a crease on one side. Other than this issue, it works great. I love the duplex printing and scanning, it is very fast, and is very quiet when not in use. If only it didn't mess up the envelopes, it would be perfect!

We bought this machine for our store because it was the only one that fit into our cabinet. What a mistake.Firstly, when one of the ink cartridges is empty, the whole thing stops working. So if you are out of Cyan or Magenta ink, you won't be able to print anything, not even in black ink, even if the black ink cartridge is perfectly full! It's also very glitchy. When there's a paper jam (not uncommon, mind you) you have to open the back of the machine and pull the stray paper out. However, when you try to resume printing, the paper jam error message won't go away, no matter what you press, so you then have to unplug the machine and then plug it back in for it to work again. Of course, it loses all memory of whatever you were printing, so you have to figure out where you left off or just start over. It does this almost any time you have to cancel a process. It's also not the most user friendly. When someone is sending you a fax, it requires three different buttons to be pressed in order to receive it.All in all, we are regretting this purchase terribly. We're thinking we should have just figured out a way to fit an HP or Canon all-in-one in our little space.

I've had multiple HP all-in-ones previously and was going to get another one until I read the great reviews about this one. I like it, it's a nice machine, lightweight, nice size, does a decent job of printing and is very easy to assemble and set up initially. The auto feeder works well without jamming. It's easy to figure out how to do basic things like printing, copying, etc., without needing a manual. My problems have been when I've tried to duplex print or scan multiple pages into a pdf rather than a jpg. If I throw the docs in and either through the machine or my computer select 'scan' it automatically scans them into individual pages in jpg format without an easy option or selection for type of file I want. I couldn't quickly and easily figure out how to duplex print either. The manual refers most things to the cd-rom which lacks instructions for both of these issues. Each time, I then went to the website where I couldn't find the answers either, even the downloadable manual doesn't address everything and was missing the whole scanning issue entirely, and ended up emailing customer support. While they are pretty quick to respond, the instructions are long, as in 12-15 steps, and sometimes a bit unclear, often leaving out key things ie: after duplex printing, you actually have to go back in to the software and deselect that feature. Otherwise the printer later jams or thinks it has jammed because it's still trying to print in duplex mode. I haven't been able to get a receipt of confirmation after I've faxed, only if the doc didn't go through. The manual covers the journal, but not the receipts.I never had these issues with any of my HPs. They are just touch and go. When scanning, I'd throw the doc or picture on, hit go and the software would automatically pop up and ask how I wanted it saved, where, and if I had any special requests. Easy-Schmeasy. I never needed the manual for anything, let alone having to refer to a cd-rom, a website and emailing tech support. Faxing and everything else was the same way. My only complaint was that the flatbed read a smaller area than the average size copier, so when I would make reduced copies even, it didn't read outside of the standard 8.5x11 size even though it was larger.I'm pretty computer savvy and if I'm having challenges with this, then it would be especially so for someone who isn't.

Великолепно
I bought the 255cw when my HP broke. I liked the idea of the wireless connection. It setup with no issues to my wireless network using a Trendnet router/switch. It has worked with no issues at all. I have used it for fax, copying photos, sending photos to a pc. I've not had an issue with it at all. I buy discount ink and haven't had any issues there yet, either. I have just recently updated the firmware. I'm not sure what it was supposed to fix but the update went well and its back online.

Ужасно
The Brother MFC-465CN has a nice appearance, lots of "bells and whistles", and is priced reasonably in the store(which is why I originally bought it). What the consumer does not know is that it will cost at minimum $160 per year in colored ink cartridges (without doing any color copying----so multiply that out if you plan to do any of that), to keep the machine working because of a flaw in it's design. The machine goes through self cleaning cycles which use up the color ink cartridges. I've called and complained 7 times to Brother and they will do nothing about it. Over a two year period I've spent 4 times what the machine originally cost me, on Brother colored ink cartridges, because the machine will not work until the color ink cartridges are replaced. I make approximately one color copy per month, if that. What a SCAM!!!!!!! I'm furious.
