I purchased this printer specifically to use at home for printing ledger sized paper (11 x 17) for drawings. It does the drawings perfectly, but all of the other features are an added bonus. It is easy to use - fairly intuitive - and is a great all around machine for home use at an affordable price.

I bought this printer to use in a small office and it works very well. The document feeder is nice to have when you need to copy multiple pages. It will not staple or sort, but those copiers are much more expensive.

I was upgrading from a simple Epson CX-5400 all-in-one printer. I had very specific requirements for my next AIO. I wanted print/scan/copy/fax with wireless capability and cordless handset. There are very few options with such capabilites and this had great reviews.I have had the printer for 6 weeks and so far I couldn't be happier. It took about 10min to set up with my wireless network. Print quality is very good and better than expected, scanning tools/interface is user friendly with many options, fax works well, cordless phone is very helpful. Hopefully it continues to work well.

The size is great and the scanning/printing so far has been very good. We started out wireless and have never looked back. We bought the machine more for the built in phone than the fax capabilities. Based on the functionality and configuration options I think Brother designed it more for the fax than the phone. It works good but there are much fewer options for the answering machine / phone than there are for the fax. The only other bummer is that there is no GUI interface but rather a config program so I cant make adjustments from any PC. I'm a sys admin so these things are likely not as important to others. I really wish the extra phone handset wasn't so over priced or I would have bought it too. Over all very happy with the product and would recommend.

Overall it is good, if you plug it in via USB. Its a little slow to start printing. Getting it setup for wireless, which I have yet to accomplish, is a pain in the butt, and most people say just to call in without even trying it yourself. I tried, and they hung up on me and never called back. The WORST thing is though, every time the power goes out it erases the answering machine message and defaults to just receive fax with no message. i do not think I would purchase this again for these two reasons.after using for a while.... nearly impossible to send a fax if you have an external phone hooked up. answering machine is cumbersome and unreliable at best. document feeder has issues with more than one page, although after multiple attempts it may work. wireless is useless, I can't get it to work on anything except plugged directly into my computer. the only thing that seems to work is the scanner and media drive. I would NOT recommend this for a home/office or office of any size.

The description of this product is very deceptive. It looks like you are getting a machine that will scan 11 x 17 but in fact it will only print it. What good is that? . You have to look very deep in the info. to find this. I bought one and tried to imediatly return it but had to pay the return shipping and waisted 2 weeks to get the correct 6490 model.

I have been using this printer for last 8-10 months. My experiences:1)When I first purchased, I use to switch on-off the printer after every use. Original ink came with the printer got depleted very soon because of this. After putting new ink I leave my printer on always and never shut it down. Now my ink runs for months.I usually choose the option of 'Normal' quality when printing if the output is not for presentation purposes.2)Initial setup was a bit pain connecting to router et al..and I am a network engineer by profession.But since then it has been very smooth ride and is very dependable.I would certainly recommend this.

The price is low compared to other manufacturers and the quality of print is fantastic. Most of all, I like the four separate ink cartridges so I can easily check which one needs to be replaced soon. Also the price of ink cartridge is not expensive. One drawback is it is a little bit noisy.

Do not buy this printer. It is the worst printer I have ever seen. From the constant paper jams that are nearly impossible to unclog, false low ink readings that disable the printer, and just moodiness this printer is horrible. Some days it works, other days it decides to take a day off and will not function at all. The best are when you install a brand new ink cartridge and then it tells you that it is empty and refuses to attempt to print until you install yet another ink cartridge. I have never wanted to throw a piece of electronic equipment out the window until I met this printer.

The ink jet part is permanently built in. If it becomes clogged and and the cleaning function doesn't fix it then you are sunk. There is no replacing it like you can do with other printers.After less then two years the ink jet is now clogged and cannot be cleared. This printer is going into the trash. Waste of money, waste of time. I will never buy another Brother product.

I really needed a low cost printer with 11x17 capability and this printer is the perfect solution. Easy to set up. Works great. Very good print quality for an ink jet. The software is excellent. Only negative is I wish there was a manual feed option for instances when I need to print an envelope or a paper size not already in tray #1 or #2. But overall, this printer is much better than the HP all in one in my opinion.

This All in One is my second from Brother. It has a great photo printing setup and download. It prints only Ok if you want something printed in less than 5 minutes. At first it would hardly print at all, and I had to go to the Brother website to make it play nice with Vista. Now it's fine as far as that's concerned. My biggest gripe is that it either drinks ink when I'm not looking, or the cartridges don't hold much. I'm on my 3rd set of cartridges and I've had it for 4 months. If this continues, I'll have to stop using it because the ink cost will be prohibitive!

I've been looking for a large format all in one scanner for quite a while now. It is so disappointing to have so many large all-in-one printers that still have a tiny scan plate.this one has a monster 11x17 inch scan surface!i already was in line to buy at office depot when i saw that it also has wifi! then when i got home i noticed it has memory card readers and color lcd display. it just keeps getting better!tried out the scanner, quality is great...and FAST! i'm glad this is a Brother too, i've never been impressed with any HP product, and they seem to dominate the industry now :(so far, i couldn't be happier...and i assume with a 2 year warranty that i should stay happy :-) the only thing i could possibly think of to take it to the next level would be a laser version

this is the 1st all in one machine ive bought and i cant be happier. it has done evrything ive ever wanted it to and with no problems. im stationed in germany and needed something that would fax from here to the states and it does. printing pictures is a bit defferent, but i think im using the wrong paper. so will see. all in all no problems. would recommend this for the home office person.

I did not know exactly what a wireless printer meant. I thought that we would not have to hook it up to one computer. My kids have seperate laptops. Is there any way of using this without wireless internet?I have not yet been able to contact anyone, so it has just been sitting there. I have had other Brother printers and they have been great. I hoped for the same and am disappointed. Although this printer was easy to set up, the scanning software was easy to figure out, the print quality is excellent, the printer simply does not print envelopes properly. No matter what I do, the envelope is always creased and bent when it comes out of the printer. I have never had this problem before, even with other brands which have not been as high performing as Brother, so I do not understand how the problem can be so serious. But I would not have bought this printer if I had known it did not have the capacity to print standard sized envelopes!

I had this printer for a little over a year. It has served me very well all during that time. For my purposes as a homeschool mom, I used it almost daily printing out copies or things from the net for my daughters to work on. I also printed out color business cards for my mom. I really haven't had a problem.I never tried to print out a color photo, or used the fax. I don't know how well it would stand up to a very busy office. You will have to read other reviews for that information. Anything I printed out always had the same colors as on the work sheet. There wouldn't have really been any difference if I had used a heavier paper.Also, I did find out that it is better to either have it print something every day, or let it go through the cleaning cycle. I know the cleaning cycle takes up ink, but it is better than to have to go through two, three, or more to get the quality back after letting it sit a couple of days unplugged and unused.[...]This brings me to why I had say good by to my printer. I was ordered ink from 123 Ink Jet. They always sent me the G&G ink. Then in the last shipment from them, they had a different geranic brand called color in a yellowish/orangeish box. Instead of a pull tab at the top, it had a clip at the bottom. That should have been my first tip off.Needless to say, I thought well, 123 Inkjet has been good so far, and the box said it was made for my printer. I had to push a little more to get the cartrige in. That should have been my second tip off. The third tip off, I had blue ink after inserting the one cartarige. I should have just removed all the cartarges when the printer didn't register any of them. But I also needed something printed, and I didn't have any other ink cartarges.My printer did spit out what I needed. I thought fine, it is still working. Then a little later it started to give me errors. The weird thing was that after I checked the plugs and reinserted the cartarges, it would print a test sheet again. Then give the error messages.[...]I would have bought this model again, but decided to try Brother MFC 420cn to see if it would be any better on ink. That has yet to be seen. It works just as well as this model. Sometimes I think that the 210C gave a little better printout. The 420CN doesn't seem to print as dark as the 210C. That may save on ink though. I'll have to decide whether or not I want to play with the settings.

This replaced a Brother MFC210 and Canon MP160 at home. Things I like:Cheap--Consumer Reports rated this as one of the cheapest (i.e., ink) to use.Compact--note the picture--no external paper feed or trough sticking out. It's all inside! I LIKE my desk space.Ethernet hookup--I no longer have to keep a computer on so others can print.Display--I didn't care too much about this until I noticed the caller ID displayed. The display gives a status of your phone line. Nice.Easy to set up--no problems having wired and wireless computers detect the printer during setup. No IP address to setup.Print quality is good. Photos print great--no lines. Card reader works fine. Cartridges are very easy to change--no need to open the printer because the access is on the front.Copier reduces the image on the fly.CONS: won't print or fax if one cartridge is empty. I ran out of cyan and c/n fax or print a black doc.

I bought this printer for over six months. I can print via wireless from anywhere in my house. It also print via the ethernet cable that you use to connect your computer to the wireless router to access internet. Its so amazing and unbelievable. No problems with this item so far and now its over six month. I waited this long to write a review because i want to see if it won't last or a piece of junk.

I had always been reluctant to purchase a laser printer for home. Given the premium you pay over ink jet printers and the amount of printing that actually takes place at home, it never seemed that it was worth the expense.However, after throwing out my third "low cost" ink jet printer after a mere few months and factoring how much cartridges cost, I finally decided to take a serious look at low cost lasers. Glady I stumbled upon this little gem from Brother.Two years and six reams of paper later, I can say that Brother makes wonderful low-cost laser printers that are perfect for home use.While HP seems to be king in the workplace, in my opionion, their price is far too high for home use. Not to mention the fact that I've seen many, many problems with their lowest priced lasers. My Brother 5140 has been reliable (not a single jam, even with the envelope printing I've done) and cost effective. When you take into account the failure rates of inkjet printers, this will very likely end up saving you money.One reason this printer is so reliable is that it uses a horizontal tray feed as opposed to a vertical feed (where the paper is loaded vertically in the back and comes out vertically in the front)used on many of the low end HPs. STAY AWAY from ANY printer that loads this way. Every one I've ever ran across develops major jamming and feed issues in a very short time.All in all, I love my printer and recommend it to anyone who doesn't require color prints.

I deleted my original review which I include at the end of this updated version.This thing went through three sets of ink cartridges in six weeks of very light use and this weekend, it stopped working completely. I hate this new generation of ripoff home printer/copier multifunks. They get you with the inks and its worse than owning a time share in New Mexico.Bastiches! I regret that the Brother that built and sold my lovely 15 year old fax machine that also does copies is now just another bimbo on the block.Here is my review written when I first got the thing. I am so sorry if I influenced anyone to buy this item or this brand!!!!I'm keeping this multifunc. It's soothing to look at and it prints and I hope it will still print after the warranty expires. I really like my very old Brother fax machine with the handset and inexpensive toner cartridge so I decided to give this a try. Other reviews I found were not positive about the cost of the ink and the fact that the inks run out because the machine automatically cleans out the ink heads. The ink thing is the one drawback with this product BUT ink rip off is a characteristic that exists throughout the gamut of photo/color printers these days. For $150, I'll risk this pretty machine. I've gone too long without a working printer. The black and white print quality is fine and the photo print quality is acceptable similar to my lightly used but nonworking Canon i950. I really like the little cubby hole for ink cartridges in the Brother machine amd I think the location of the usb connection is amusing.So I don't reget this purchase and I don't not recommend it. I think it's very hard to be satisfied with color printers these days and many glowing reviews don't factor in the cost running the machine i.e. cost of replacement inks.This model doesn't seem to be popular enough for there to be cheaper generic inks for it. I found the legit inks for sale on a home shopping channel website for $25 (black) and $13 each for colors. I dread the day when I have to replace these ink cartridges.In another owner's review, I read that copy making uses all the cartridges even if the image is black and white. Mercifully, I own a fifteen year old xerox black and white copier which has never required a professional repair service.The professional reviews support my opinion that this machine sells based on its multifunctionality but it really is not a master of print quality and is suitable for someone who prints very very lightly which is basically me so I'm keeping it and I have the same reservations about the machine as the reviewers. If you have light printer needs, ignorance may be blissful ownership of this model. If this had a handset (there is another model that does) than this would be a fine one in all machine for an apartment dweller. :)

What a great multi-function printer! I was so surprised by how easy it was to get started. Just make sure you follow the steps according to the manual, ie. getting it all ready before you install the software. It doesn't come with the USB printer cord, so that's something you can take from an old printer (if it's the same type) or you'll have to get it elsewhere. I bought this for my mom, replacing a terrible HP printer that stopped working for no reason. The color printing quality of the MFC-65cn is great and the ink cartridges are so easy to click in. All I can say is buy it! You'll never find a less expensive, all-in-one machine like this.

I stuck with HP for years even when it appeared that they were no longer making quality printers. Having wasted four hours on the phone troubleshooting an HP model 7250, which is, on paper, comparable to the Brother MFC-685cw I returned the 7250 and decided to quit buying printers from HP. The MFC-685cw was up and running in minutes. Since I was too lazy to read the users guide fully, I ended up calling a very knowledgeable (and patient) Mac tech support person at Brother's Memphis office for help on a minor issue. She got me on the right track in a few minutes. Brother has apparently been making quality products for many years. I also have an old Brother FAX machine that has worked perfectly for years. I think that HP has been trading in on its famous name for too long. If HP wants to be competitive then they need to do something to improve the quality of their machines. Benchmarking Brother machines would be a good way for them to start.

Prints very nicely. Scans well. Once I jumped through the install nightmare (see below) it connected to my network.It came with 2 install disks, one labeled "MFL-Pro Suite" one labeled "Vista drivers." There was no documentation on the install procedure for Vista. Not even on the "Vista drivers" cd, just a file called "instructions" that said "put the disk in the drive, go to such and such folder [which didn't exist], and click 'start.exe.'" If I hadn't known that I wouldn't have been able to find the instructions. I went online and was able to download the Vista manual. It took forever to install, like half an hour, and the instructions didn't correspond to anything that actually happened. Moreover, the promised scanning and OCR software did not install. Couldn't find it on the disk. Went to the brother site, couldn't find it there. Went to the brother support page, it was offline. Called brother support. The phone number was disconnected.I can scan using the image capture from photopaint, and I've rarely tried to use OCR, but I'm rather miffed. I'd have rated it lower, except of course that all this trouble was really caused by Microsoft foisting this nightmare of unstable bloatware called Vista on us.

I'm very happy with this printer. It's quite, fast, and prints high quality. Network setup was done by installation software, so it was no problem to get started printing. My daughter started printing out pictures from her phone (about 25-30 4x6 photos) and we still have ink left so it will be cheaper than any other inkjet I've used. Haven't used the fax, but it does a good job as a copier, color or black and white.

I am using both an iMac and MacBook with OS X Leopard, sharing the printer via ethernet connected to a Time Capsule. The only three flaws I have found so far are minor:1) The printer cannot scan via USB/Bonjour when connected to Time Capsule, but works great via ethernet2) The buttons on the printer cannot operate a "Scan To" function, so you have to do it all from the computer3) The printer is a bit noisy, but it is not badOther than those three minor inconsistencies, this printer is fantastic. I had been using an HP OfficeJet 5610, and it sucked. That printer scanned and printed poorly. It was not compatible with OS X and the software was awful. The software for this printer is great. It is tucked away nicely on the menu bar, and the options are intuitive. The setup was very easy, and I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a scan/print solution for not only OS X, but also as a network printer/scanner. You cannot beat the price, and if you go to Best Buy, it will probably be even cheaper. I paid $99 there last week.

I originally bought the Brother Intellifax 1960C for the office functions of copying, faxing and printing, but when the cordless phone in my kitchen died, I decided to purchase the extensions for the rest of the house. We're happy with the way the system works. The ringer is quite soft, but I confess, I haven't yet looked up in the directions whether or not I can control that.

It was my best purchase ever. It replaces my old fax machine, a scanner and of course have added a copy machine. Printed pages have good quality. Ink cartridges are very easy to handle and very easy to obtain in the local market. Delivery was very fast. I'm glad with my new Brother MFC Printer. Last thing, network connectivity have solved an old problems in my home network. Thank you very much.

I've had this printer for about 6 months and it works fairly good. It prints, it scans, it copies, and it can also fax. I haven't had any problems with it yet and the ink is fairly inexpensive. the only thing I really didnt like is the fact that pictures dont print all that nice. But for the price it works very well. If your into printing a lot of pictures I really don't recommend this printer for you but if you need it for printing documents, this machine pulls its weight.

Stop your yapping. I've had this printer for more than 6 months and it's been just dandy. I have an HP for photos and higher quality requirements. This Brother is for low cost every day printing and copying, and my very occasional scanning. I got it for $49 at Staples (after rebates). That's less than the cost to replace my HP catridges. I've read reviews where people complain about this thing being an ink sucker. Solution: I keep my entire PC system on a power strip/surge protector which I turn off when not in use. This limits the self cleaning cycles (and also prevents power waste - think "global warming"). AND besides all that, these are the absolute easiest cartridges to refill. For those of you yapping about how the sensors stop all printing operations when one cartridge is empty or low and how expensive all replacements are, well, just get a darn refill kit and just stick the darn syringe in there and refill the darn things for literally a mere buck or two. Then the sensors are happy (read full), your printer's happy, your wallet is happy, the environment is happy for less land-fill, and you're happy. Brother might NOT happy, because they're not making money on the expensive cartridges you were supposed to buy, but shall we shed tears?I don't use FAX, but scanning has been OK (decent but not professional), and copying works fine. Printing quality is so so, and NOT too nifty for photos, but for a everyday low-cost printer that you can run for next to nothing ... seemingly indefinitely, it's a ridiculous bargain and a very handy tool.I've never had the paper jam problems some others have mentioned, and I've just now refilled the black cartridge for the first time (what ink hog???). Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've also read of certain updated firmware/drivers. I'm pretty sure the installation software this piece came with was already the updated version. All I know is that this thing has worked just fine. Before this, I've had (and still have) Lexmark and HP. Refilling those are quite a bit more of a hit or miss adventure. The Brother's cartridges are as simple as can be.Cheers!

So far, this is a very good all in one printer. I haven't used all the functions, but the ones I have worked well. It was relatively easy to set up, and the wireless networking is very cool. (Several laptops use the printer.)I also like the individual ink tanks.(Less waste by replacing only what you need.) The only negative would be the bulk. It's pretty large, but then again, it does alot.

I've only had thic MFC for a few weeks, But have found it to work very well on all fuctions.Not hard to install with VISTA. About 2 hours out of box to finish.Not bad for me,"Im no GEEK". I've always had HP printers in the past but just basic printers. I just could not pass up the 240C for 50 bucks. What a deal. I paid more than that for my first printer 20 years ago. No five stars, Im not sure what that would be. For 50 bucks GET ONE.

We purchased this printer to service our home's wireless network. It has turned out to be a great printer, well worth the money. I'll summarize our observed pro's and con's after several months of hard use.Pro's1. It's simple to setup, and operate, and interfaces with a wireless or wired network flawlessly.2. Beautiful print jobs for both pictures and text.3. Print costs per page appears reasonable, and in line with other printers in this class.4. Scan and copy quality is excellent.Con's (minor complaints)1. Paper tray does not hold many pages.2. Would be nice to have a simple button to disable fax recieve rather than extensive menus. Fax answer is a problem when machine is hooked to the main phone line.3. Would be nice to have a screen dimmer option. Screen is constantly brightly backlit all the time, which seems unneccessary use of power. (yes, being really nitpicky here -- but Brother can you be GREEN?)

Extremely poor product. Finicky, expect lots of error messages, and annoying 3-beep error response to everything you're trying to do.I couldn't figure it out initially and left it there for a few months. When I came back to it, the ink was all empty before I even got it to print once. After replacing the ink cartridges and finally printing, and not using it for the next month or so, I get the dreaded 3-beeps. My yellow ink needs replacement even though I've only printed a few pages, never printed in color. Heck I don't even care about the color printing anymore, but it won't even allow me to print a text document (in black) without replacing the damn yellow cartridge.

I was initially attracted to this model because of a special offer from a major office retailer at a price below $80. Checking various sources I found the usual retail price to be between $129-149...even that was below other mfg's for machines with the same features. Average reviews were quite favorable compared to HP models with the same features (the other brand I was considering), so I figured for the money it would be worth a try. Installation was a breeze (the Vista software CD included worked fine as opposed to another reviewer who said he had a problem with it. That said, I had to go in and tweek the settings in Control Panel/Networking to get things 100%. After that it worked on my home network flawlessly! BTW...I have it connected via LAN via a Linksys w/l router, and not a USB, but the fact it can use both connections simultaneously is a big plus. Every function works beautifully and the print quality is better than my Epson photo printer. Scanning, which is usually a huge hassle, is a no-brainer with this machine and the customizable settings are fabulous. Faxing with a single shared phone line is flawless (assuming you follow the instructions). At this point I have no negatives, and I would highly recommend this model to anyone with a home office...but this is not a high volume commercial machine. If you buy it with that in mind you can't go wrong.

Great price and wonderful print quality. It also prints fairly quickly. I like that it has the option to darken or lighten your copies on the printer so that you don't have to have you computer on to do that. I also like that the replacement ink is cheap. Just wish I would have bought extra ink because I print everything now.

This system would be a great system, if not two major factors. 1) The printing systems has a feature on it called "automatic cleaning." This feature uses ink to clean itself, and sometimes lots of ink. Moreover this feature seems to be ran by a timer, and not by usage. It makes no difference if you print 5 sheets or 100, when it is time for it to clean it cleans, day or night by the way. I called Brother tech support, to see if there is a way to turn it off, there is none. 2) the ink cartridges are very expensive, especially if you buy them from Brother. A full set of them will cost you roughly $80.00. If you look around, you can find them cheaper, but even then, they are expensive, and rated at 500 sheets at 5% coverage. There are other printer that have all of the same features, and are cheaper to maintain. This is a BUYER BEWARE system. Don't expect to get off cheap using it.

I've owned this printer/scanner/fax/copier for almost a month now and I am very satisfied with my purchase. The installation was a breeze. Everything functions fine and is easy to use. The onscreen display guides you through each task wonderfully. I'd recommend this product to anyone in need of a printer. I can't elaborate on the fax function since I've not yet used it.

I upgraded to this model over the MFC230 I had, hoping it would not jam paper when I tried using the heavier weight paper to do brochures up. This one was worse then the MFC230. I was CONSTANTLY unjamming paper! I am now going to have to try to go with a different brand. [...]

AMAZING VALUE FOR THE MONEY. I USE THE FAX ALL THE TIME. I DON'T HAVE TO USE THE COMPUTER FOR THIS FUNCTION EITHER. I CAN SEND ONE PAGE OR AS MANY AS I LIKE. MUCH BETTER THAN MY OLD EPSON CX6400. I LOVE THIS MACHINE!

I am fairly happy with this machine. It takes up a lot of space on my desk, but as I use it all day long, I don't really want to put it across the room. I mostly use the print feature. It has only jammed a few times in the year or so that I have used it. As for the scans, they usually come out crooked, but I don't often need high quality scans, so I'm ok with that most of the time. I've only used the OCR once or twice and it did ok. It made some mistakes, but the font on the original was rather small. We also have the similar model with the fax Brother MFC-8460n 30ppm Network Multifunction Laser Printer and we are happy with it, too. It makes good copies, but I don't usually try two sided printing or copying on this machine.

I bought this printer a year or so ago. It is great. I didn't really need all the extra functionality, but it was nice to have it all in one compact package for my small apartment. Several nice things about it: each ink color cartridge is sold separately so if you run out of one color, you just replace one color. Cheap third party compatible cartridges are available. If you run out of one color, you can keep printing without that color. The scanner works incredibly well. One major flaw though, I ran out of magenta and kept working without it cause I was doing mostly black text printing. Well, if you don't replace the ink when it says it's low, the print head dries out and no amount of hitting the cleaning cycle will revive it. The super compact format of the device means that the print head is inaccessible, so you can't try to clean it yourself if you are desperate (and I am). I can still use it to print black and white, but the color functionality is shot now. I am seriously bummed.
