Ok, First of all if you are a person who is concerned about excessive packaging, this is one unit you probably want to avoid. Microsoft uses such a big box compared to the product contained within it. Although most of the packaging is cardboard that can be recycled you would think they could come up with a better design. Really, the package should have been only slightly bigger than the CD that is contained within it, since that is the largest component.I first like to look at the manual when I get a product. The Microsoft LifeCam HD-5000's manual consisted of a single 5 inch square sheet with illustrations (no text)in boxes labeled one through four. The first box was a picture of the enclosed CD, the second a picture of a USB connector with an arrow pointing towards a USB jack, the third showing you can place the webcam on top of your monitor or on a flat surface, and the fourth showing you can twist the camera on its base. That is the entire manual. I should also mention here that a label covered the USB connector coming from the webcam instructing you to install the software from the disc first. You physically must remove the label in order to insert the USB connector to your computer. I guess this is just in case you did not have the time to look at the the four squares. Oh, you also get a useless "Microsoft Product Guide" which looks like they throw in with every product, since it mentions Lasers, headsets and Radio Frequency devices. This guide is just full of warnings and precautionary measures which they probably legally have to enclose. The only thing is mentions about "Webcam Devices" is that the adhesive attachment disc may leave an adhesive residue, something that does not pertain to this product, and therefore this guide did not need to be included at all.It took an usually long time to install the software. At times the install window disappeared completely, and I was not sure whether it crashed or what it was doing. After that I decided to install it on another computer, but this time I checked Microsoft's website to see if there was an updated version, and there was. The enclosed disc was version 3.0, but the website had version 3.5. Once I downloaded the newer version and ran it the install time was almost cut in half, so do yourself a favor search Microsoft's website for the latest Lifecam software before using the disc.After I installed the software, I was informed that I needed to upgrade the firmware of the camera which only took a few minutes and was much more informative than the software install.Once the new firmware was installed the Microsoft LifeCam software popped up and the blue light on the cam turn on. The default resolution is 640 X 360 which is what is recommended for my video card, other resolutions have the warning indicator saying that they are not recommended for my equipment and may cause performance issues. This is no surprise, since I am running it on an older system. Since I cannot put the camera into a high definition setting I cannot attest to quality of anything above 640x360.The video quality of the camera is excellent, though slightly saturated using the default tru-color setting. You can adjust the settings manually if you wish, but for most people the tru-color setting will be just fine. What you absolutely must turn off is the autofocus on this camera, since it does not function properly AT ALL! It constantly adjusts, blurring your picture and gets very annoying. Once you go to the advanced setting and click on properties, then camera control you can shut off the autofocus by clicking on the "Auto" check box in the Focus section. By sure to hit apply, then ok. I had to do this twice but finally got the autofocus to turn off, and that's a good thing, otherwise I would have thrown this webcam in the trash. You will also find controls to "zoom" the camera (though this is done through software interpolation, not an optical zoom), Pan, and Tilt (which only seem to do anything when you have zoomed in the picture, confirming that the zoom is entirely software based). There is another tab in the advanced controls that are video settings allowing you to manually control Brightness, White Balance, Saturation, Exposure and Contrast (the last two are greyed if you have Tru-Color tuned on). The exposure on the camera is quite good even in low light conditions. With the exception of the auto-focus issue the video quality is excellent on this camera.The stand alone software allows you to make video captures, audio captures and still captures, then send them in an email or share them in Windows Live if you wish. There is also an effects function which allow you to add various filters or overlays to your stream or capture which is very COOL! My favorite is the afro with the headband. The software does a great job of tracking your movements and keeping the overlay in place if you move your head. This is something that is hard to explain, you really need to see them in action t

I should start by saying that I searched for a webcam for a long time. There are a maddening amounts of options out there so it was really hard to pick one. As soon I saw this Microsoft webcam I fell in love with the design but the reviews made me doubt quite a bit. I read reviews everywhere on the Internet and watched others on YouTube until I finally decided to go for it. It came in pretty quickly and I absolutely love it. Since I spent so much time reviewing this camera to see if it was a good choice, I am going to try to sum up in this review the things that I was looking for and which took me hours of reviewing to find:1. This webcam is catalogued as a "notebook" webcam. I was very confused by this since I also wanted to use it with my desktop PC. The two reasons why it is catalogued as such is because the grip is somewhat small compared to other webcams; however, if you have a flat screen monitor that is around 2 inches wide, it should fit. The other reason and the most important one is that the USB cable is very short, just so it can reach the USB port of a laptop, not the CPU of a desktop. So unless you have your CPU really close to your monitor or a monitor with USB ports, you might want to get a USB extension for this one.2. The devilish "auto-focus" issue. This is the critique that was made about this webcam pretty much everywhere I looked. And yes, it is indeed a big issue but luckily with a simple solution. From what I read, people were very upset that the only way to disable auto-focus was by disabling the "true color" feature first and others could not even find a way of disabling it. Well, after I used the camera for a little bit and verified the auto-focus problem, it took me about 10 seconds to disable it by itself, no other features were affected. Apparently Microsoft released a recent driver for the software (which was automatically installed with the CD) which allows you to just go to Properties and uncheck the Automatic Auto-focus option and voil?! Problem solved. The only drawback to this is that if you are trying to show something that is very close to the webcam, say you want to show the text of a book, it will not auto-focus and it will be very blurry, but then again you can manually adjust the clarity settings so that the text clear will be clearer. The secret is to disable the Automatic auto-focus feature. No big deal.3. The microphone is pretty nice. Don't expect a high fidelity sound but it does a good job and the noise reduction feature does make a difference.4. As for the software, it is very basic but practical. You get many color and shape effects with the added feature that they follow your face instead of staying in the middle and you having to adjust to the effects. It also allows to take pictures, record audio and video at different resolutions all the way up to 720p HD. The only feature that I would have liked to see is a timer for the photographs since sometimes I might want to take a picture of me from a distance.5. It is a very small camera, way smaller that I thought it was going to be, which is nice. The 360° feature works pretty well also, it turns very easily and smoothly. It also comes with a nice pouch the size of a regular wallet and which can fit the webcam and the USB cable perfectly fine.Overall it is an awesome webcam and not too expensive. While there were other webcams around the same price and with better reviews, the design and the 360° features of this one just got me hooked. It is indeed a very nice looking webcam, easy and safe to transport in the pouch and with a good performance for the casual user like me. I am very happy with it.

Many desktops/laptops nowadays come with a webcam built in or included in the purchase package. If you have a need for one, however, or just want a high-def camera with 720p video, this is a a nice choice at a decent price.What's in the box?* The Microsoft LifeCam HD-5000 webcam* Integrated mounting clip* Microsoft LifeCam 3.0 software on CDSETUP:The bright green tag on the USB cables warns you that before you connect the webcam, you should install the software. My suggestion is to connect the camera before installing the software. On Windows XP and later versions, the Operating System should detect the camera and you should be able to click on the camera icon to be prompted to download software. The reason I say to do it this say is so you get the latest version of the software. The webcam ships with SM Lifecam version 3.0, but the product is already at version 3.5. You certainly can use the CD that comes with the webcam, but I prefer to use the latest version.Whether from CD or the internet, the installation is pretty typical of Microsoft: agree to the licensing agreement, please wait while it installs some files, etc. etc. The installation takes just a few minutes. It consumes about 30MB of hard disk space.If you installed the software via the download just make sure to dis/reconnect it after the installation. You should then see the blue light on the webcam to let you know it is on.USE:Mounting is simple with the adjustable clip which crimps to cling to surfaces or sits flat and balances itself well. The camera head can manually swivel to the left and right. The camera body is black and unobtrusive, being about 4 ?" tall including the stand, and just a little over 1 ?" wide.The camera is simple to use, and at this price point, it was a pleasant surprise to find it has autofocus.The LifeCam software as a pretty easy to use interface. It is fairly intuitive, and if you use PC software frequently, you should have no problem with this product. It includes the basics, such as capturing a photo, audio capture, and video. After you perform one of these tasks, icons will appear to perform other activities with the media, such as "make a movie, "send in e-mail" and so on.Starting video calls is a breeze in Windows Messenger, using the software or just by pressing the button on top of the camera.You can adjust the camera settings using the LifeCam Dashboard. To open the Dashboard just click the arrow to the right of the LifeCam window. The Dashboard is also where you can change settings such as volume, video adjustments and special effects.PERFORMANCE:I am running the camera/software on a Windows 7 32-bit OS. My CPU is 2.4Ghz, Intel I5 Core and I have 2GB of memory. Basically a decent laptop, nothing spectacular. I have no performance or resource issues with the camera. Just a word of caution: If you are capturing 720p video you will eat up PC resources, although usually not enough to hang up your PC, depending on what else you are running. Microsoft lists a minimum system of XP, Vista, or Windows 7 and a minimum of 1.6Ghz dual-core processor, and 1GB RAM. They suggests at least 3.0Ghz dual-core and 2GB of RAM for better performance.The video is crisp and clear and the autofocus works well, although like any autofocus, at very close ranges with sudden movement, you may go briefly out and back into focus. If the auto focus annoys you, you can disable it in the software.The webcam displays colors that are pretty accurate and well saturated without being overly vivid.Audio is very good for its intended purpose of talking, etc.The still photos on this webcam are very clear and you can get within a few inches and still remain in focus.The 16:9 display ratio is a nice feature as more and more content moves away from 4:3, and toward 16:9 as a default.One note: Although the webcam is advertised as "True 720p HD", the default capture rate is 15 frames per second (FPS). True 720P would be 30 FPS. I think the video is very good for a webcam, and I am yet to have a video call that is choppy or breaks up. If you must have 30 FPS, you need to make a registry change in your Windows OS. Please keep in mind that the increased FPS will soak up even more CPU resources, so think about that before you do it!All in all, this is a very nice webcam, and in this price range (under $40) it is one of the nicest out there.

Length:: 0:19 MinsPros:-- very nicely built, with a modern retro symmetrical look. It doesn't feel cheap, and in my opinion it looks nice.-- The clamp/foot is lightweight but does an excellent job, gripping/mounting/standing as well or better than some other heavier ones.-- Pictures come out fairly saturated, if with somewhat inaccurate colors.-- Performs well in low light (not AF, see cons) in picking up images fairly well without horrible amount of noise.-- The angle is fairly wide, though not quite as wide as some higher end cams (think 28mm equivalent on 35mm cameras). The wide angle stays even in HD mode, something that is somehow absent for Logitech's more upscale Webcam Pro 9000 (for comparison, the Logitech crops the scene in HD to reduce active pixel count).-- Has AF for objects at all distances, even very close-up macros (though AF doesn't work reliably for me--see cons)and very decent software support (truecolor) that corrects smartly for tricky lighting situations such as backlighting.-- The software allows for manual focus. While that's probably not useful for everyone, it is a nice touch for those special situations where you want more creative control or when AF fails (see cons)-- The mic is fairly sensitive and picks up very well.-- It's lightweight and small for its features.-- Being Microsoft, the software installs painlessly--just plug it in and the system does the rest (using Windows 7).Cons:-- Has a lot of problem focusing in low light situations, where AF just hunts constantly by scanning the entire focusing range and then still misses. It's not terribly low light either, about your average bedroom lighting, or 2x60w bulbs in a 250 square feet area. The scanning is quite annoying as the subject just goes really out of focus for 3 seconds, and it is activated whenever the subject moves. Most of the time my face is just not in focus: it tends to focus on the background rather than the foreground (a very unusual behavior as most other AF systems would hunt for foreground objects), unless the subject covers the entire field and/or is high contrast (such as texts on documents). I made sure that each out-of-focus is valid as I could make it sharper with manual focus, or the only way I could correct this glaring problem. Alas that defeats the purpose of AF. If the subject is well lit (like putting a bulb to my face or sit next to the window), it works okay, but sometimes only after scanning the entire range again.-- While saturated, it cannot shake a feeling of blurriness, especially when compared to the Webcam Pro 9000, even when it is focused. In general the sharpness really suffers, that even by playing the AF couldn't correct it. It's a low end cam, but why bother with AF if it can't be sharp? Wouldn't it be better off being a pan-focus camera?-- Shooting video in HD mode is very taxing on the CPU of the computer. While this activity is generally demanding, there must be something inefficient as the framerate from my logitech is much much smoother and higher doing the same 720p video. On the Livecam I could barely get 10fps (not to mention constant focus problems). It's an older laptop though, so most newer desktop may not have this problem.It's a very decent webcam especially considering the price--has AF and decent low light/audio performance. However I think MS really needs to work on the AF problem, probably correctable by software (yes, I did update to the latest driver and software and couldn't improve it). I hope future updates fix this. However, as it is now, if your computer is in an area without consistent bright light, the AF simply won't be reliable.This is a major problem be it in Skype calls, shooting video, or anything else you want to do with it. It is very damaging to the practical purposes of this camera. While the focus problem may not be noticeable in some situations (it doesn't have skype HD, and regular skype video's quality is so low you probably won't notice it being somewhat out of focus), the intermittent focus scanning action will put it right in your face. As it stands, no-focus is almost better than this iffy AF. The flaw desperately needs to be addressed before this camera can be taken seriously.

I bought this webcam in hopes of updating my 5 or so year old Microsoft webcam, looking for better quality and more ease of use. I did get ease of use, as the webcam can easily turn 180 degrees on both sides (it can't go all the way around, stopping at the mid back whether you turn it left or right) and it's very easy to tilt. It just barely fits on my desktop monitor, so it can be used outside of laptops if you have a small enough monitor. The USB cord is extremely short and I need an extender for it, but since it was made for laptops, this is understandable. The quality, however, seems roughly the same as my old webcam. I've used it several times so far and have heard complaints from friends saying the sound was very low, even when I had it to 100% volume on both the webcam settings and messenger, and also that the image quality was no better than the one I use to use. Overall, I am much happier with this one compared to my old one due to its efficiency and ease of use, but I'd recommend against it for people who want to upgrade since it can't even exceed that of a 5 year old webcam in quality. For first time buyers, it's average and does what you'd want it to, but if having great quality is important to you, you may want to shop around some more for a better one.

This little guy sits atop my laptop screen, clip snugly fitting roughly 3/4 of an inch in width, much like the women who choose to love me. It boasts a 720p resolution, but requires a 3.1 Ghz processor for HD video, so I had to drop the resolution a bit on my old laptop. Trying out HD video on my old 2009 dual-core Lenovo at 2.2 Ghz was like looking at a stick figure through a flip book being shown to you by an extremely uncoordinated 5 year old. It was super choppy. Dropping the video resolution a bit gives a bit of grain (read: pixellation), but it looks more like an old VHS being transcoded into digital video than a bad adult video download. I have revealed too much about myself in this review already.The tiny cam swivels a full 360 degrees, which is useful if you need a specific angle to film your next webcam production of "Apocalypse Now" in full 720p HD video! Or, if you just need to turn your camera. It helps a lot with blogging. My problem is that I'm not very attractive, so I have no reason to blog. No one wants to see ugly people on camera.The software comes with a few fun digital effects that allow you to make funny faces and what-not, so if you're into that, then you're probably really into drugs. Otherwise, it's pretty useless, but cute.The auto-focus does tend to get annoying, but you can turn it off once it focuses the camera for you if you open the options dialog and click on the tab next to the effects tab on the top right corner. Then, scroll down. It's a bit tricky to find, so I thought I'd include that bit for you guys here.I do get some audio out-of-sync issues, but not enough to detract from video play. I think it's the old codecs from my laptop, though. I used it on my new Acer with an Intel i5 processor and it works just fine.You can't beat the price, though, unless this little camera owed you money. I was surprised by how good this camera is. I've had it for about a month now and it still gets the job done.

NOT 720@30FPS. This camera is advertised as having 1280x720 resolution and 30FPS video capability, but Microsoft's drivers limit it to 15 frames (you usually get less). I have not found third party software that will fix this problem. On Microsoft's forums they say:"Microsoft LifeCam software is optimized to provide the best customer experience for video capture. The LifeCam software will limit the frame rate from the Webcam to what is reliably achievable by the system."However, many people report having awesome computer setups and still it won't capture. Some people say they have achieved 720@30 without the Microsoft drivers, but I have not been able to replicate their results. Even if you figure it out, it would only work for video recording, not video calls or livestreams.Microsoft fooled many people with this product and they don't care. Do not buy.

The camera itself is of pretty good quality, good resolution, and lighting and all. However, the clip that holds it to your computer is sized very large, I am sure it would clip on the top of a large desktop, but not anything like a laptop. the smallest width for the top part of the clip is over an inch wide, and it just kind of sits on top of my laptop, and jiggles around with every movement. If it would clip on securely, it would be five stars because everything else is fine. Software was easy to install, just plug in to the computer and it pops up the download. The tag on the cord says it's supposed to come with a software CD. Mine didn't come with one, but I didn't need it either. That's about it. Alright for the money, but beware the clip!

Shame on me for not researching this products quality. It's not clear to me how many customers have seen the issue of the autofocus, resetting and trying to refocus every 20 seconds. Microsoft has known about this issue since 2010, but their only solution is to turn autofocus "OFF". [...]. I have checked for updates, and the camera came with the latest firmware available. To me, the autofocus is a selling point and not a feature that I would choose to turn off to get it to work properly. Unfortunately, it appears that the quality of other web cams at this price point is also spotty. You may get lucky and get a good one. From what I've read on microsoft blog spot, even after getting a replacement, the new one also doesn't work. FYI I purchased this at the end of Jan 2013, and today is Feb 14, 2013.hope this helps someone from making a hasty purchase.

Microsoft LifeCam HD-5000 720p HD Webcam - BlackFirst, a word about the vendor, "howard_tech". Product ordered 7/27; expected delivery 8/1 through 8/8; delivered 8/1. It was well protected in a new Microsoft container.Installation was straight forward. Having read a previous review stating the importance of downloading and installing updates to the product, I followed that advice. A slight confusion occurred when the installation dialogue said download was complete, and installation was in process. It then displayed a web page to select the correct download for my operating environment. That proceeded normally. At the end, I was returned to the original dialogue, and I realized I was about to duplicate the process. I aborted that, and proceeded to apparently finish the installation correctly.The product has satisfied my very preliminary testing. I am reluctant to give a 5-star rating with so little experience. I will update this review and rating after more rigorous usage.=====================================================================================Update:I have upped the rating from 4-star to 5-star.I have used the MS LifeCam HD-5000 720p HD Webcam about 10 times, now. I must like it, as I bought another one for my wife. I have a terrible backlighting position for the webcam, but it displays the image quite well, as long as I close the blinds to reduce the problem a bit. The auto-focus on hand written cards came in quite handy in my helping a hard-of-hearing person doing some editing.

Well, I don't have the habit to write reviews for products, but this time I have to say something for you guys preparing to buy this webcam.Firstly I want to say something good about this product:1. well designed and manufactured: it comes with a little bag for storage, and the details are all very nice.2. The clip is easy to use and the wire is just fine for a notebook(this is especially for notebooks, so don't buy it for desktops).Here comes the shortage of the product:1. auto focus just sucks: when I was preparing to buy the webcam, I saw some reviews complaining about this problem, but I didn't quite care, I thought, how suck can it be? But after I truly used this for the first day, I came to realize it IS really a big problem. Even if you don't move in front of the cam, it will still try to focus about every 10 seconds. And it costs about 2 to 3 seconds to focus to the right point every time. It is really annoying.2. If we say the first problem is barely tolerable, the second shortage is absolutely unbearable. That is: the webcam is out of work after 5 months use. I used it for video chat about 2 hours every day. After 5 months usage, it doesn't work any more. I've tried to reinstall the driver and even changed to different computers to verify, but it just doesn't respond any more.So, the final conclusion is: don't buy this one, choose another model or brand.

Order ID 103-2588219-6952224:1 of Microsoft LifeCam HD-6000 720p HD Webcam for Notebooks (Black) [ASIN: B00372567A]Thanks for sending well in time as said, but1. the package i recieved neither was packed in a Microsoft Package instead the product was out of Microsoft Package and was rolled in a sheet of normal paper this shows the product is not New,find the snapshot how it was delivered to me, package was rolled in a paper like a burger :( but i am shocked to see the package this way.2. the CD supplied isn't reading from any of the laptop where other my cds works without any problems, its clean and clear you have sent me an out of box or used items saying as new.. !3. the webcam keeps on adjusting focus even when i make a move of just 1 mm..so does this product deserves the user to be a solid statue ?my friends $5 webcam is far far better than this so called branded and HD webcam.i really lost my pride among my friends having received such a costly webcam wrapped in a paper and keeps autozooming always even the user or any element in fous make even 1mm movement.this is not even worth $1.to avoid this we need to deselect autofoucs meaning deselecting true color, then what the purpose of listing as true color, HD 720p Quality never seen, my C drive has 12GB free space then what else we need to provide ?When using at HD mode never seen that quality and we cannot use any sort of annunciations/makeover, so we need to use it in very less resolution to use the annunciations/makeoversa $5 webcam from radioshack standing outstanding infront of this.Microsoft should refund for all buyers who bought this webcam to retain their pride among people,now i installed app on my iphone for Just $3 is awesome and that too wireless webcam now.i am not returing this bcoz i am not ready to bear the return shipping for which i can buy an lot more apps for my iphone, instead amazon should give my money back and arrange for return if they want this piece of High Definition waste.find the snapshot how i received the product and how my friends received.[...]I will report to Microsoft how i received their product,this looks live-span/amazon is trying to blackout or spoil on the name of Microsoft.i bought because of Microsoft not because of live-span or amazon*****When i open camera using Microsft Lifecam Application thats all gone, this webcam becomes undetectable by other video chats like gtalk, skype.... so this camera is usable onyl by any one app at one time.when i am using in video chatting on gtalk and when i open Microsft Lifecam Application then it says not able to connect so how i can use the app's like recording video chat, taking snaps while video chat ?this is just a piece of crap, don't understand Microsoft doing such a old model zero option webcam in HD..

It is a microsoft product after all,so the packaging was neat,Instruction pretty simple,Plug in a USB then my windows update found a new driver for it ,installed in minutes,started working flawlessly.The picture quality is good for such a price!!it is 14$ only and you cant expect HD quality,but it was good enough for video chat ,there is a small microphone inside and the sound was crystall clear if you are up to 50 cm or so from the cam,after that noise become annoying,but not very,still usuable up to 1M in normal room with other people in the room with you talking.The strap stand was good and adjustable,it hangs on the top of PC monitor or laptop relatively easy,still need some adjustment to make it work well.Finall words:Highly recommended for budget minded people who want a cam the gets the job done ,if you are looking for an HD cam then try Microsoft HD LifeCam Cinema ,which is the best IMHO.

This camera is very easy to install; just plug it in your computer and it does the rest. It even installs its own software for you, and updates it. When you use it with Skype you MAY have to tell Skype to switch from your computer's onboard microphone to the LifeCam microphone, but that's as hard as it gets. Very good camera. If you ever have trouble with the autofocus, there's a way to turn it off: Select the Settings cog on the right, scroll down and click "Properties" under True Color, and then click the Camera Control tab, and next to Focus you can uncheck the "Auto" box.

i bought this since it was HD, and $50 in the big box stores, the picture quality and microphone was nice enough on the first unit i bought, to buy 3 more for my family members so i could cam with them (working 300 miles away every other week). my family and I are very satisfied, and works flawless with Google chat, and Skype. it also automatically turns on when i want to specify a sound source when im authoring some instructional videos and the program is going to record the screen and my cursor, while i talk. the sound quality for that purpose was also good, although if doing a serious instructional video, i would recommend a headset so that you don't hear a minor echo or sound bounce from the immediate wall behind the computer monitor (unless you have your computer screen in the middle of the room)

Great camera, nice mic, and very clear picture. I have it hooked to my laptop and using a 42" HD tv as the screen and while it is obviously NOT HD at that size it is still nice and clear. Bright pic even with just the screen as light. I like the weird little bendy stand as I can set it either at the base or on the top of the tv without it falling over. No need for software, plug and play. I was a little annoyed that it came in just a plastic bag, no instructions beyond a small paper saying install CD first. It didn't COME with a CD so I was really confused. No box, no manual nothing. But I think that was more the sellers fault than anything else.The camera itself is great.

This webcam is meant for notebooks, not desktops, unless you have a true FLATSCREEN that is less than 2 inches thick. No bumps or curves allowed. It captures most light, unlike my stock webcam, but the auto-adjust feature just kills this product. YOU HAVE TO TURN IT OFF, and SET THE FOCUS TO 0. Otherwise your picture will be blurry, and also because auto adjust always works so your picture will be blurry every 2 seconds. Microsoft better fix the software on this so that we don't have to continually turn off auto-adjust whenever we want to use the webcam. Being 720p, this webcam is more oriented towards the low-med budget people who wants a quality webcam for not much money. The so-called "carrying case" is just a pouch made of a thin layer of neoprene, and doesn't look like it could do much to protect the webcam. I would suggest a better carrying case if you want better protection.

The built-in webcam in my laptop is really bad, it just very dark as soon as you are not in the brightest of light. So I wanted a cheap webcam for skype-calls and the like that is better in low-light situations and this cam does the job really well, at a super-low price.It's not HD but for video-chatting I have never missed that feature, you are more likely to be limited by bandwidth rather than camera resolution. Image quality is clear and, crucially, it also works well in dimmer ambient light.The only thing I am not too certain about is the flexible attached stand/clip. Its design doesn't appear to be ideal for use as both clip or stand as it is difficult to bend it exactly into the position you want. It always seems to rebound a little after. But anyway, for the money this is a minor flaw I can perfectly live with and if you need cheap webcam without too many bells and whistles this Microsoft model is a no-brainer.

Others have stated the problems well.This thing does not play well with others. I wanted a a camera I could move about for Skype with grandchildren showing them whatever we were talking about.It installs easily but it is hard to keep it as default camera. Camera and mic on Dell monitor really have problems when the LifeCam is plugged in as well.I bought Microsoft camera thinking it would be safe as Microsoft also develop Windows 7, my operating system. I thought I would not have conflicts between their device and other USB items or monitor camera.Picture quality is excellent. Microphone is ok.But, even when the Lifecam camera is working as I wish, the Lifecam microphone may or may not work.I would not recommend to friend.

Skype Certified ???Windows 8 automatically detected and installed product but getting it to work with Skype was a day long pain in the ...Although the video works the small pip window that should show me what the recipient views is a black screen. It's sad that a generic laptop cam works flawlessly with Skype but a cam I spent over $30 on was a hassle to get up and running.Otherwise the quality of video and sound is what you would expect from a lower priced cam. For that I would give 4 stars.

I'm not exactly a webcam model or anything, so I don't much care about crazy in depth quality or anything to that matter; however, from that perspective, the quality of this webcam is all sorts of superb. The auto-focus is a treat -if- you have adequate lighting around. If not, the camera's going to auto-focus all day long.In short: Don't buy this camera if your kickin' it in a cave. Do buy it if you like sunshine (or lamps).-V

This webcam is pretty good for the price. Actually, it's pretty good period. The picture comes out clear and nice. Not a long cord so it's best used with a laptop like the discription says. The only problem with THIS particular model is it's not really compatible with Windows 8. I spoke to Microsoft and there are no drivers (software) that can upgrade it (as of the time I spoke to them in January 2013.

worst thing about this web cam is its always trying to focus. i cant go more than 5 minutes with out it going blurry and trying to focus. most of the time any kind of movement will make it refocus and go blurry for about 5 seconds. i am currently trying to find out how to stop auto focus. that is my only complaint about this cam but it is a huge issue for me. keep in mind it may be a defective unit. make sure you consider other reviews before you buy it.

This webcam is a phenomenal product for the price. It has 720p widescreen video and works splendid. Has tons of cool features with effects, and the video quality is great. Also has an auto-focus feature that comes in handy, which can easily be turned off. Plenty of adjustments you can fiddle around with to make it suit your environment and setting. I definitely would recommend this product.
