Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000 (Red) Quality has very good quality. I faced some problems installing it though. Cool Features of changing image styles works only with Microsoft live chat, not with skype / Gtalk / Yahoo Messenger, which is the only thing I miss,it would have been great. Built in Microphone is of good quality. Stand is flexible. Works fine in low light.

Running a Dell Dimension E810 with 1GB RAM, 250GB hard drive with XP Media Center Edition.Update, Live Messenger became a hassle to use. But the camera still works great with Skype and my wife and her family use ours and theirs (same model) weekly or more.We received the camera quickly using the Super Saver Shipping. Physically it is easy to install (plug it in)and is easy to use after the software is installed. However, the CD with the software is better used as a coaster than anything else. When I followed their directions, it just sat there for an hour before I gave up. I then just ejected the disk, stopped the process and plugged the camera into the USB port. Went to the Microsoft site and started to download the driver and it appeared to be instantly doing more than the disk had done in an hour. By this point I had seen enough and went to bed. In the morning, all was well and the camera works great now with Live Messenger. Picture quality is good. Sound is apparently good. My wife can talk to her sister 500 miles away and everybody can see the kids regularly.Chuck the disk, plug it in and go to the Microsoft website, screw the instructions. Without the software issues, this would rate a 5 star item. I have and would still recommend this item to family and friends.

The image quality is much better than expected. The low light image quailty is the best out of any webcam that I have owned. The bendable/adjustable stand seems to fit on anything and can bend to stand on a desk surface. I took a chance on this cam instead of buying the Logitech QuickCam 9000, and I am glad that I did as I saved about $50 and got an excellent performing cam.

My suggestion is to not even try and use the CD that comes with the camera to run the install. Put the CD in but cancel the install. Plug in the camera and the computer will try and install the drivers. Instead of letting it find the drivers automatically, browse to the CD manually. Only then did the camera install for me.If I tried running the CD or downloading the software from Microsoft (which I did a few times) the install seems to work but then 5 minutes into it an error pops up saying it couldn't install because it "encountered a unexpected error". That's it. No explanation whatsoever. A Google search, as many have said, shows many people with that problem. Their suggestions didn't work for me. A little trial and error with the above steps worked.I don't know if there's supposed to be come kind of software with it but I don't have that installed (as I said above, the install always failed). And using Google Chat or Skype it does not look like High Definition video like the box says. Chatting with a friend using their Mac camera they look great at full screen but they said we looked pixelated. They sent us a screen capture of us and the quality was disappointing.For a Microsoft product installing on a Microsoft OS this is absolutely abysmal. Now that it's installed it seems to work fine. But the trouble in getting it installed (and I'm an IT person) is not worth it.

I tried installing this product on a machine with Windows XP and the software will not work. The camera works fine with the various messaging programs and even through the camera wizard, but the microphone and the features advertised with the camera do not. I tried several fixes I found online for the problem and none of them worked. If you are running Windows XP, buy a different camera.

I have ordered two of these new VX-5000 Cameras because I had to send mine (same model, just a red ring around it) to my family in South America, so we can communicate. I also sacrificed an antique Intel 431 from 2001 which I sent as well. Surprisingly the new VX-5000's are not remotely as good as the old one was. Not to speak of the Intel which operates on a whole different level. I am somewhat disappointed seeing the pictures from South America with my old cam through Microsoft Messenger being much crisper, with much better colors than my new one - Messenger really gives me an A:B comparison. Well. I am NOT happy with the new cameras I ordered, but for the price I paid for them I will live with them for a while. Microphone works. The Microphone on the one in South America is excellent!Shipping was fast and this complaint is just about the lower quality of the basically same product VX-5000

I did a lot of research on this product before I bought it and I love it! It is great! The only two complaints I would say that I have is that I wish you could have the fun features on while you are video chatting and that the bendable holder was a little bit longer. Other than that this web cam is GREAT and I would recommend it to anyone!

The picture quality is excellent for pictures or doing video chat (AIM, Skype, Windows Live)There are cool settings to play around with such as enlarged eyes, different colors, and animated features to add on to your head/faceI was pleasantly surprised with how perfect this camera is for what I was looking for, especially for the price!I would definitely recommend it!

If you are a novice user this is a great piece of equipment. It's very easy to install, (took about 5 minuets and Windows 7 did everything for you) Picture quality is OK, not professional quality but good for general use. The grip is very handy and can be attached to most anything near the computer. I only wish it had a lens cover.

I have a Mac Mini so it didn't come with a camera. I bought this and was able to walk my wife through the installation over the phone so I can video chat with the family while on the road. The sound quality was very impressive and the image quality is on par with nearly every other web cam on the market. I highly recommend it.

I bought this camera to use with Skype and it was pretty hard to get us all together where we could see each other at first and when we did, the picture quality on their end was horrible, but I saw them pretty clearly. The price is right with this camera, but they spent $20 more and got a much better camera. This one is hard to attach to the back of a flat screen and had to be duct taped on. Because I don't use mine often except to say hi to the grandparents I probably won't upgrade really soon, but if you want a really good camera, spend a couple extra dollars.

Microsoft's LifeCam VX-5000 is very small, the camera also has a colored ring that goes all the around the face. This ring comes in red, blue and green. The camera which I got has a blue ring. A blue LED is placed in the upper left hand corner of the face that turns on when the camera is in use. It is good to see that this LED is very dim. Having a Bright Blue LED flashing at you can be very annoying.Video is recording done with the following resolutions, frame rates and bitrates in WMV video with 160kbps WMA audio.640x480 15 fps 1900 kbps320x240 30 fps 900 kbps160x120 30 fps 675 kbpsImages are taken at 1280x960, 640x480, 320x240 and 160x120 in jpeg format. My daughter moved to England for a few months, and we're keeping two of her dogs for her. She told us about Skype, so my wife and I each bought one of these combination mic/web cameras for our desktop computers. We installed the software quickly, plugged the units into our USB ports, and viola! Instantly we were sharing an online video call with my daughter so she could see and "talk to" her two Shih-Tsu pups! Is it "high definition" quality. Not even close. Is it perfectly adequate for video phone calls. Absolutely. Great little product. Easy to use, excellent sound quality, and we're thrilled with ours. Thank you, Microsoft, for another cool little product!

Pros: The quality of the picture of the camera is very good. The camera's software and compatibility with other software is easy and straight forward. The installation was simple as well.Cons: Attaching it to your computer is a little bit of a hassle, but once you get it where you want it, it has been fine.Note: You need to install the software first before you ever plug the camera in or there will be problems, which is posted all over the instructions. This is only a problem for people who don't read the instructions.

With all the hype of video conferencing I finally purchased a web cam with mic built in. I was disapointed with the Mircrosoft due to everyone complaining that I cut out on vocals when I video conference on Skype. Haven't had a chance yet to try the cam out on a different service but will try it out on differnt ones, maybe Yahoo!'s service or something. Very poorly designed base that is fine on the desk but horrible on your monitor, and I have a flat screen which is what it was supposed to be designed for. The picture quality is very poor especially with the HD Graphics card I have installed and all the RAM and processing power to boot. Very long time to have the program start, don't know why it has to think so hard just to turn the unit on and show the picture on the screen. But there are better versions of these cams on Amazon, but you will pay for them. If I could do it all over again, I would try Logitec since I love them for their wireless keyboard/mouse combinations.

Works perfectly w/ windows 7 (64bit). Great picture quality even in low light conditions. Would've given 5 stars all around if it weren't for the bloatware. If you want all the functionality of the cam you will have to install the software that comes with it which includes MS I.M. , Windows Live, etc etc. If you want a cam to just use with Skype like I did then just plug it in and let windows download the drivers for it.Bottomline, good value ($34), great picture/video, good sound, looks good, but no extra features unless you install all the bloatware.

I have been a loyal user to logitech webcams for the past five years. I just upgraded to windows 7 and logitech was not ready for the software since it was just released therefore it wasn't compatable. The only webcams I know that are compatible right now is the microsoft products.Yesterday I purchased this microsoft lifecam 6000 from Office Depot because I couldn't afford to wait for a shipment from amazon because I use it for work. I will put it bluntly, this product sucks. The little button at the top that ivites your contacts is a cool device if I used it but I don't. It pans and tilts like teribly, it is not quick like the logitech at all. It takes forever for it to move, the zoom is okay but not the best and the lighting is really hard to get right. You would think with the money that microsoft makes in there products and services they could come up with a better product.As soon as logitech has windows 7 updates available this thing is going back to the store. I doubt I will purchase a microsoft product again unless it is just software.

This camera is awesome. Crystal clear audio and video and for only around 20 bucks! You won't be disappointed with this product. I use it to record lyrics and video chat with friends mostly and it is perfect for both. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a camera or even a mic.

This little compact camera is great. I have tried other cameras and was disappointed with the picture quality and cost.This camera is very good for the price: it has great picture quality (clear with representable color); it is easy to install and use; it can take high resolution still images; it is compact and streamlined; and the lens can retract for safely carrying around with your laptop (also has nice little solid carrying case for extra protection - very portable).I am very satisfied with this camera.

I have tried a number of low end webcams, but found this one to be great. It not as good as the high end HD cams, but then I did not want to spend $100 bucks either. For the money, this delivers good picture quality and excellent audio!! I highly recommend it.

My webcam arrived in the mail about a week ago and I have used it lightly since it arrived. On the whole, I'm happy with the purchase (primarily because I payed under $30 as opposed to the ridiculous 'retail' price). The video quality is good, but it's not necessary the 'high definition' that Microsoft advertises. The quality is slightly improved over my old Logitech budget webcam.Two criticisms that I have read on the website that I disagree with are regarding the software and the fit on a Lenovo laptop. Firstly, it's true, the software CD that arrived with the webcam is not compatible with any version of Vista... so what... this just means that you go to Microsoft.com, look up the model, and then download the drivers online. It's really not a big problem. Secondly, I use a Lenovo laptop and the webcam still fits well on my T61. The wide-lip on Lenovo Thinkpads is NOT a problem with this webcam.It's a shame that the picture quality is only mediocre and that the webcam feel so flimsy, but hey, considering the steep discount in price, it's a great option for a relatively budget webcam. Eventhough this webcam is sold as being certified to work with MicroSoft Vista, it DOES NOT. I can't give it any kind of rating for audio, video or ease of use because it never installed properly. I tried all the latest and greatest donwload upgrades and updates from MicroSoft and it still DOES NOT WORK!!!! A nice looking piece of JUNK!Save your money and buy a Logitech.

The VX-5000 is a solid webcam for the price. In terms of hardware, you get a basic camera that can capture at 640x480 at 15fps, 320x240 at 30fps, or take still photos at 1.3 megapixels (1280x960). The video can blur pretty easily with fast motion, but is good enough for video conferencing or Youtube. It also has one of the better stands that I've seen on a webcam. The stand is flexible like a gooseneck lamp and is covered in a rubbery material to prevent the camera from sliding around.Most of the work seems to be done by the bundled LifeCam software. However, as always, I would suggest that you skip the install CD and go to the Microsoft website to download the latest drivers and software.As of this review, we are at LifeCam version 2.04. You get the regular options of adjusting colors, white balance, zoom, etc. but there is also a library of cool 3D and graphical effects. The LifeCam Dashboard gives you a list of about 90 different effects that you can add to your videos. Most of the effects can detect faces in real time and will track your head as you talk and move your head around. There are several distortion effects that are kind of like carnival mirrors for your face. The coolest effects are the 3D ones. You can don a pair of 3D bunny ears, a cowboy hat, or a clown mask and they'll follow you around in real time. Unfortunately, there isn't a way to apply multiple effects at once.Keep in mind that this webcam is probably best for things like video blogs or Skype. It's not really good for fast movement so if you plan to set up something like a puppy cam, I would suggest a better webcam like the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000. Overall, I think this camera is a good buy for users who just want a simple-to-use webcam that also has some fun features. Since it's made by Microsoft, it is well integrated with Windows and you shouldn't have to fuss around to get it working.

I'm happy with the quality and the ease of use of the camera. It hooked right up and allowed us to use Skype right away. The ONLY that brings the rating down is the stupid bendable mount that will not mount it firmly in place with anything short of Gorilla Glue.

Bought 3 cameras for family to share. Installation on everyone else's PC was a snap, but mine. Actually installation was not a problem, but could not get it to work. Lifecam program indicated no camera. Followed all of MS's recommendation and no luck. Spent 2+ hrs on the phone with MS - India, (clean boot, no usb connections, disabling everything etc.) and still nothing. Running XP, with 2 Gig of memory, performance video card etc. The computer recognizes the camera and the camera starts up, just no picture. Have given up on this one.

This is a great little camera. The picture is incredibly sharp. I was able to see my bird walking around on the floor of the living room in detail. Installation was easy and my computer didn't choke on it once! It installs Windows Live which you don't really need to make it work, so unless you like this overinflated software for messaging, I wouldn't chose the option to install it with the camera driver. The clip part that is supposed to fit on the top of your laptop didn't fit mine very well, so that was a bust. And positioning the thing so that it's stable and at an aesthetically pleasing angle took a little finagling. Overall though I still chose to use this camera over the snake eye because the installation was easier and the picture was clearer. A good buy for the money.

My requirements for a web camera are small. I'd still be using my ancient Logitech webcam if they made a Windows 7 driver for it. But when I upgraded the OS it was time to upgrade the peripherals too. This camera was easy to install. I wish the mounting "thingy" that you mold into a mounting bracket was a little longer so it could grip my monitor better but it works. Adjusts to low light pretty well. If all you want to do is put a picture on the web or do video conferencing on the cheap then this camera works can fill the bill.

This seems like a great idea with an easy to use camera and all that jazz, however... This isn't great. The installation was simple, just pop a disc into the cd player and follow the directions. After you plug the USB cord in it seems so wonderfully easy, until you have to try and fit it onto your lid. My computer is an Alienware and I never really took notice to the curved and deep lid until this Lifecam wouldn't stay on. I finally finangled the dang thing so it would stay, but unless you actually have a squared off, 90 degree angle flat lid, it's not going to stay well.The picure is just a problem. 20% of the time it worked, the rest was colorful snow. Plus the microphone doesn't work unless you are within a foot of it so I would humbly suggest you get a different product. But I must say, having a sliding camera lens to shut it off and turn it on is awesome... the only awesome thing about it.

This thing takes forever to load the software drivers, even with Windows 7. Windows 7 does not automatically load the drivers for this device. Previously I had purchased the HP KQ246AA and that one you just plug in and go. I was trying to save a few bucks by buying this one but that was a mistake.Aside from that, picture and voice quality are fine.

I bought this camera as a gift for my parents who live across the country so that we could video chat. The video quality is much nicer than on the camera that is built into my laptop. My parents are relatively computer savvy for their generation, but they aren't gurus and had never used a webcam before. They didn't have any trouble hooking the camera up to their computers though. The bottom line is that this camera is extremely user friendly and gives a clear picture.

I would like to say before I attempt to tell you my thoughts on this Webcam that I have never used one before, and I do not find that I should use it in the near future. It is, however, a very engaging little device. For what I thought it was and what it did, it did great but with a quip that was quite annoying and that is why I knocked off a star. Here goes for you prospective buyers.It is a very small box shaped camera about a 2 inch square that has a very adjustable, flexible hook that can shape into just about anything to fit and grip it to anything you should please. The picture quality is as good as I would want it, much like cheap camcorder, and this is without adequate lighting. It looks like many a number of webcam shots around the web, low in the light department, light graininess, and not very sharp. So this is what I was expecting and that is what was delivered. It starts up fast, and overall a very simple easy to use cam. There was one thing, it was less than major but pretty annoying, which I will get too after the very fun Pro's/Con's list!Pros:1. inexpensive2. easy to setup3. small4. very easy to use5. video phone capableCons:Took about an hour to install the program!This is what I was telling you about. I put in the CD, and it had to download and install for over an hour before I could finish installing the software, which was only a cam program, nothing ostentatious and nothing complex. And this is without installing the Windows Messenger service that it recommended.All in all it was as good a cam as can be expected from someone not expecting anything. It worked for every purpose that I thought it would be good for (take pictures, video messaging) but it took an hour to install a minimal type program, which was uncalled for. All in all give it a shot even though it makes you work for it.

I bought a Logitech webcam before buying this camera and it was awful. Very hard to focus. For LESS money, this camera is much nicer looking, smaller, more versatile, and has a MUCH better picture that focuses automatically. I use it for Skype and it works perfectly! Great video and great audio. The flexible stand is very versatile and easy to use whether you want to place this camera on top of your monitor, or on the desk.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

The video quality is excellent! I only installed the driver & skipped the MSN Messenger. Everything works fine. I use it for Skype & Google video conference. The built-in microphone is great so I don't need to buy a separate headset.The webcam is small and ready to move anywhere.

I got two of these as refurbs, and they both worked fine. No setup issues, installation was easy. Video quality is fine for the purpose (Skype) and the microphone also works fine, tho I have to turn its volume all the way up since it's mounted over my monitor.

I had purchased another webcam that I was NOT happy with and returned, and ordered this Microsoft Lifecam VX-100 based primarily on the video review(thanks!)It was shipped super fast by the seller(Super Deal in Brooklyn)and arrived in 3 days!!!! :)The installation process was a bit time consuming and cumbersome, but may have to do with my older model Dell laptop/OS/etc more so than the camera/software. It was labeled very clearly with install software before connecting camera, and came to find you have to go through installation of Windows Live Messenger (which I'm not interested in using as I am a Skyper) and this is what took time. Once that was done the camera installation went fast and painlessly. I am not a technical, camera litterate person and wanted something that's easy to use, and this is it.Skype found the camera immediately, and although it was too late in the evening to try it out on a live subject, the tests I ran seemed to be just fine. I am pleased with the settings options and chose low light and backlight comp(?)The picture is a little bit delayed, but by far as much as the first camera I bought. The stand unfolds and the camera clamps easily on to the laptop monitor. I also liked the fact that it connects via only the USB port and did not require an additional plug- in for the microphone.For the price and ease of this camera I am overall very happy with it. I can not compare it to a more expensive, fancy model, but this works very well for my needs!
