I've never actually seen the LifeCam I purchased. I had it sent directly to my daughter, who lives 3 hours away, so that I can keep in touch (through Skype) with her and my 5-year-old grandson. Since she plugged it in, it has brought them closer to me. It is almost like being there! The picture is clear and the sound is perfect. Best money ever spent!

When will I learn? This camera consistently hunts for focus every 10-15 seconds. Tried 3 different Microsoft Cams and they each exhibited some unacceptable hardware or software problem. Lifecam Cinema and Show high end cams were useless and produced problems on my Win 7 system that caused me to have to reload the operating system because of their software.Installed the Logitech Webcam 9000 Pro and viola! No Issues!!!Microsoft Does It Again. My advice is to steer clear of this product. This is not the first time I've encountered Microsoft hardware not working well with their own operating system or office applications. I'm just about ready to throw in the towel and get a mac.Bottom line: try Logitech instead. they have more robust hardware, fast, stable and feature rich software.

Product did not work out of the box. Messed around a couple of hours to no avail. Sent it back and got a prompt refund from Amazon. Ended up buying a Logitec which installed easily and performs great. My advice is to remember that you get what you pay for.

After reading the reviews on this camera and many, many others, I decided to purchase this one. Actually, I purchased 4 of these to give to grandparents and other family members so that they could all see and talk to our daughter.I have been very happy with it's performance. The clarity is really quite surprising and the sound is clear. Now you have to remember that it's a web cam and you should not expect crystal clear video as if you are watching something on TV. That being said, it is more than sharp enough for purposes of chatting with family members. It does have a little lag and blurring when you move quickly side to side, but I don't find that a problem.It also does quite well in low-light situations and even when there is a large amount of backlight.Included Software: As others have said, DO NOT install the included software! My mother-in-law made that mistake and had to have an IT tech come to her house to remove it all. Once it's on your computer it is very difficult to remove. I unpacked the camera, and just plugged it into the USB port without any software. My PC recognized the camera and found the drivers it needed within about 2 minutes. I then downloaded and installed the Skype software from their site and I was up and running immediately thereafter. The entire process, including Skype registration took about 10 minutes.Honestly, I wouldn't hesitate to use this camera for business conferences either.If you think you need a crystal clear image, you might want to look for one of the really expensive cameras, but for the money, I don't think you can beat this one. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the incredibly messed up inculded software issue.

Bought this camera for skyping and have found that it is providing my receivers a very nice clear image and clear sound.I found the camera very easy to install and use. One note on using it while skyping is I found I could not run the Microsoft LifeCam software at the same time (as it is set up to use Windows Live(tm) Messenger) - once the Lifecam software was shut off, I had no problem skyping. Once the camera software is installed (and then shut off), basically any time you want to use the camera for skyping just plug it in and use. Only thing I find a little "clunky" is securing it to the top of the laptop..as it doesn't actually clip on, rather rests there according to how you adjust it. This being said, once you do adjust it, it is secure, just getting it just right on top of a laptop is a bit awkward. Although this is a little awkward, I do still like the flexible stand as it provides me several options of where and how it rests.All-in-all this is a nice camera at a good price.

I have been a loyal customer of Logitech for years; I own everything from Logitech speakers to headsets, remote controls, mice, keyboards, webcams and more. They have time and again proven to produce quality products that last a long time. When it comes to Microsoft consumer electronics and peripherals, my experience is a bit more limited. I have owned keyboards and mice, both of which have performed decent over the years, but poor reviews have kept me away from several Microsoft products. When reviewing this product, my hope was that Microsoft could WOW me with what it had to offer.Microsoft's LifeCam VX-5000 is an affordable and easy to use webcam. The installation process was simple. Instead of using the bundled CD, I went straight online to Microsoft's site and downloaded the current drivers. Within several minutes I was up and running.Similar to Logitech's offerings, the LifeCam's included software provides tweakable settings such as color adjustment, white balance, and zoom. Another similarity with Logitech is that it offers fun effects that children and adults alike may find fun.Pros- Price- The flexible base can be attached to monitor or set down on desk.- You can record video, as well as take still photos- Works with both Windows Live Messenger & Skype (Perhaps others too, but did not test)- Built-in microphoneCons- The camera cannot capture quick movements, resulting in blurs. Likely a result of low frame rates- While installing the CD, the computer can freeze up and the installation sometimes needs to be canceled.- It doesn't have full screen.- You must talk loudly and close to webcam's microphone. It seems like it has a weak directional mic. This is good and bad. It won't pick up the noise around you, but you will need to get up close and personal with the mic for you to be heard.- Video quality is not the best at a resolution of 640x480 - however, what can you really expect?For those of you shopping for a basic webcam, this would be a decent choice. If you do decide to purchase this, I would recommend buying a separate headset to go along with it. If the quality of video is a concern to you, I would step up to the Logitech Quickcam 9000, or other Logitech offerings. The quality of video you get from this webcam will by no means be comparable to what you would get with a camcorder. Nonetheless, this is a solid performer the budget-conscious shoppers.

Very good especially for used. Came in cardboard box and works just like the one I bought new. The disc isn't really even required and disc doesn't work with windows 7. Very good plug and play and works with windows 7 just not disc software.Took less than 5 minutes to setup skype and now have microphone on computer

I gave it one star on two items because the software will NOT install on my Windows XP box which is a 2.8 ghz with 1 gig of ram, more than it needs to make effects. Tried several times to no avail.

The WebCam was very easy to install and works well. I have experienced problems with changing background light. Going to Video settings and changing brightness corrects the problem until changes reoccur due to sunset, increased shadowing, et al. I am, however, satified with the product.LifeCam VX-5000 (Green)

Had problem installing it on my computer. Everything seemed fine, but just can't see the video in MSN or other IMs. The Lifecam application says no cam connected. Contacted MS, and the technician told me it can't work on computer with more than 3GB RAMs, while my PC has 6GB RAM. How ridiculous it is! On its website and manual, it's never been mentioned about this issue.Keep in mind, MS' website says this is new cam, which came out early this year, but it still can't support more than 3GB RAMs. Most laptops and desktops nowadays have 4GB RAMs at least. It seems MS only makes something that they don't want people to use.

First off, the camera works well, even in low light conditions. The image quality is clear, and runs well on my laptop that just meets the minimum requirements. It doesn't sit well on the laptop monitor. An HD-6000 would be more appropriate, since it's a laptop cam. I didn't want to wait for it to hit the shelves, so I purchased the HD-5000 instead. Unfortunately, the lifecam software is not working with Windows 7 x64. Microsoft has created a Windows 7 driver (32 bit) that is supposed to be compatible with x64. The software doesn't run on a clean install of Windows 7. I am hopeful that I can resolve the issue, I'm usually capable of fixing most computer issues, but this one has me stumped so far. Internet searches highlight the same outcome. It should be noted that the camera still functions fine, but the software with the 'extras' doesn't function.

I bought the camera about 6 months ago and I have been using it with SKYPE daily. No problems so far. The picture quality is great, sending and receiving, and it adjust to lighting with no problem. The built in microphone is great because it gives you the freedom to roam around while talking and still pick up your voice from anywhere in the room. The software installation took longer than average to install, it is nice and easy to use and has fun tools to make the picture looks funny. However be wanrned it takes a really long time to load up. The Camera mounted easily on my laptop screen and the ability to turn it left and right while mounted is very useful. I'm really happy with this product and I do recommend it.

The camera is definitely a good value for the money. It is easy to install and use, great fit on the laptop with an adjustable cam (up/down). The picture and sound quality is what I expected - not perfect, but for the money its a good bargain.

I bought this for my pre-teen daughter for Christmas. It installed easily on an old Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz system, and she loves it. Her friends love it too, and they're jealous because theirs (different brands) don't work as well, so I guess it's good! She loves modifying her images with the software, so that seems to work well too.

...so you can get it out of the package more easily. I never saw a more difficult package. What is the point? Who benefits from this kind of packaging?I would like to have a way to turn off the microphone and/or turn off the camera by a physical switch somewhere within inches of the lens, but I don't find anything like that. And no, having the ability to unplug the USB doesn't suffice, in my opinion.I ordered this camera in the color blue, which means there's a blue stripe around the perimeter of the lens housing. When you look at the camera eyeball to eyeball, it looks black, and the flexible support device that attaches it to your monitor (or whatever) is black.The picture looks really good for such an inexpensive camera. The microphone works fine and doesn't echo the speakers.

This is a great little camera for very little money. It is fantastic in low light conditions (has no problem capturing my black dog in a dark room!) and very responsive to movement. I use it with Skype, so I assume the microphone works well as I've had no complaints on the other end. It's small and unobtrusive enough to leave it sitting on top of my laptop when I'm at my desk. The bendable grip works pretty well (at least if I'm not moving the computer around too much), and it's nice that it's so easy to adjust the field of view by a simple twist of the camera. The one annoying thing is that the button on the top - which is hard to miss when adjusting the camera - only works for Windows Live. Overall, I am very satisfied with this camera and would highly recommend it to others.

Great cam for the money! I almost didnt buy it after all the reviews on here... glad i did! The cam AND the software work FINE w my copy of windows 7 64-bit! Someone else said it wont work w more than 3 gigs of RAM... horsedroppings! I have 8 gigs of RAM runs without a hitch! The cam uses thirty percent of resources while recording in 720p with a few internet windows open at the same time. Ya the cam refocuses too much- so what?!? At least it friggin HAS an autofocus!

I have never been able to establish a stable connection with this camera. it works great thru its own program, but is very unstable when using Skype. Must always disconnect and reconnect to the computer to get it to work. Sometimes this does not work either. I am using VISTA which may also be the problem, but I have not been able to find anything confirming this. All troubleshooting information on the Microsoft website leads me to pulling the plug out of the computer and reconnecting it. This is very annoying, and as i said before, doesnt always work. However, when it does work the audio and video are fabulous.

Very nice picture on this Camera. The low light is great as well as the sound. The auto focus gives a better image but it refocuses behind you if your not in the center. I would definitely buy another one of these if I needed it.

We purchased the LifeCam VX-5000 primarily for Skype use on a Windows Vista desktop computer.Pros:Great camera for the moneyFine picture and video qualityCons:Took a while to install the software, and the install program ran multiple times (at least once for multiple users). I have a feeling you could install this camera without the CD (even though MS says not to) but didn't feel like chancing it.The flexible mounting pedestal is cute and novel, but not extremely secure when used on top of an LCD monitor.The install software wants to integrate the camera as much as possible with Windows Live and assorted Microsoft messaging tools, but we won't use the camera for that. There are several effects available in the LifeCam software (including ones that add virtual wigs and masks to your facial image). These are interesting, but probably only useful or amusing to grade-school children. On a more serious note, we started Skype up, and the camera was recognized immediately.As other reviewers have noted, check ALL the different colors of this camera that are available. For whatever reason, they are not priced the same, and the prices fluctuate. Blue happened to be cheapest when we ordered. Super Saver Shipping took a bit longer than expected, but overall we are pleased with the purchase experience.

OK Video, and OK sound, but consider the following problems:(1) Nearly impossible to stabilize on a laptop screen. The worst mounting design I've ever seen on an add-on device.(2) Comes with a ton of junk software. Totally insulting. They apparently consider webcam users idiots.(3) The wide angle isn't wide. If you put it on a laptop, it will not be usable for more than one person on your side. So it is essentially a single user WebCam. Does not work for a group conversation at all.(4) The software settings are either dysfunctional or have very awkward user interface. Look at this stuff, you understand why Microsoft has not been able to create sleek user interfaces for consumer products (Windows and Office are okay). They are still clueless.(5) The low light performance is mediocre. Usable, but nothing to be excited about.

Not the best webcam in the world, but for what it costs, works wonderfully.After my laptop webcam started having issues with deciding it would take more days off than on (not recognized USB blah blah...) got fed up and started looking for a webcam small enough for convenience without lowering the video quality. This lifecam has a better picture quality than the laptop installed webcam and worth the money. Now, if I were settling down in a house and wanted a really nice webcam, there are definitely webcams that are superior, but for what I need (small, reasonable price for good quality) I got just that.

I purchased to of these at the same time - one for me, and one for my son. After we both installed the cameras and starting video chatting, we wondered why we hadn't done this long ago. I didn't install all the Windows Live stuff - I don't use the Microsoft stuff much. I did install Skype immediately after installing the camera, and that works great. You can let Skype search your contacts and you'll know who has Skype already installed and is ready to video chat right away. I am very pleased with the quality of the video. My room is low light, and the camera adjusts just fine. The video can be a little jumpy, but nothing like the old webcams of the past - the audio actually stays with the video very well. For the price, this is a great way to stay in touch with friends and family at long distances. I can actually see and hear my first granddaughter live now.

I purchased a pair of the VX-5000s so our family could more easily keep in touch with our daughter away at school. I selected the VX-5000s based upon reviews & price. Anything I purchased had to operate seemlessly with the XP, Vista & 7 OSs. (our family has an array of computers) The image & sound quality are so good that our college student was able to participate in our high school student's birthday party from over 2500 miles away. (via skype)

This was a great camera at first, but the auto focus never turns off! Even with the software installed there is no option to turn it off. So even if you're sitting still and talking it goes blurry for about 3 or 4 second every couple minuets. It's horrible! Other than that the HD and lighting is amazing. If only you could turn off the auto focus it would be a great cam. :(

This product (HD-6000) is great looking, but it has major limitations:- No TWAIN Driver for standard applications.- It doesnt capture really sharp images (Do not believe otherwise)- It gets a little a little too warm when used... YES... Hot compared to others.- Movies produced in high res where produced with low frames.In other words... Not worth all the hype.

One question I have seen asked here over and over, is will this work on a mac? I took a chance, got it, and... it does!I installed "Macam" which is an open source set of drivers that allows usb webcams to work on your mac.I have used this webcam with photobooth, iChat, and Skype.The webcam performs beautifully, and I notice no slow down.The video quality is very nice, the only con I can think of for this webcam is the fact that it does not output in widescreen format.But, this is a webcam, so I can more than live with that.To sum it up.On a mac, this webcam works (Mac Pro Using Leopard 10.5.6 (it did not work on 10.5.5) I installed the macam drivers (do not need to use the application), and everything is fine (you may not need to install the drivers). I note that I use leopard, because it might not work on tiger or lower. It did not work on 10.5.5 but did on 10.5.6.Video quality is great. I notice no drops, and the quality is impressive. Looks a lot better than some other webcams I have used in the past (many which cost more than twice the price of this one).Works well in low light or plenty of light.Works in iChat, Photobooth and Skype with no problems. It is automatically detected, and "just works"It is very flexible, and "shocker" looks very good! If I sit this next to my speaker, it does not look out of place, on top of my monitor, still looks good. I love this little webcam!PS, one more thing I should mention, the audio quality is fantastic! I'm really impressed. In all honesty, i thought the webcam would either not work, look horrible, have poor image quality, would not be compatible with most applications, and the sound would be bad. The complete opposite is true. It looks amazing, the image quality is great, works with every piece of software I own, and the sound is crystal clear. It picks up from a good ways off. And I could not be happier with this product.If you are on the fence, do yourself a favor and pick this one up. With the pros that I mentioned, and the asking price, you just cannot go wrong.(PPS, I did not install any of the software that came with the webcam, just plugged it in, updated to the latest version of leopard, and tada!)

This is certainly a good webcam if it works right. However - they are frequently defective (mine was and I found a lot of complaints about the same issue on the web). In my case, the defect was the sound - after a couple days use the only sound my counterpart on the other end could hear was loud static noise. This is a hardware problem, not fixable with soft patches etc. There is a solution for this problem (described here: [...]), and it worked for me - but you have to take the cam apart and it voids warranty.Anyway, considering a number of other choices available - I would suggest staying away from vx-6000.

It's pretty much as it describes. As far as compatibility problems go. I have Windows 7 and it just told me to go online and then started to download the update it needed to do the installation so no real problems there. Granted I've only used it for about a day but the video quality of it seems fine about what I had expected. The only thing about it is with the sound it has some weird humming or pulse kinda sound. I'm going to see if I can't do anything about that maybe the other person doesn't hear it? I'm not sure because all I've done was video record myself. So far though it seems what I paid for.

I hate Microsoft company, they always trying to get as much money as they can. Their customer service is not the best.I was scared to buy this camera especially for 40$ it is not cheap.Gotta tell you - I WAS SURPRISED FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART.It installs in 2 mins, very easy, quality is great, it is fast.Seriously I love it! I would recommend it.Even a total idiot will figure out how to install and use it.It was simple and camera looks cool itself, matches my computer equipment.Buy it, it is worth it!

It seems that the quality of a Video/Audio camera for computers is comparable directly to the price. My Dell Laptop has a built in webcam that has a 640 X 480 Video resolution and a 1.3 megapixel photo capability. The `LifeCam' also has the same (640 X 480) resolution, but the quality seems to be slightly better for some reason. I suspect it is because the `LifeCam' has 2.0 megapixel photo capability instead of 1.3 and you can place the camera anywhere, instead of fixed directly in front of you. I also compared it to my Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 which has a High Definition Video resolution of 1600 X 1200. Of course the Pro 9000 is much better, but it is also twice the price. The settings on the `LifeCam' are easy to set to a fairly good quality reading with some blur when you move about quickly, but that is typical of almost any videocam for a computer.The nicest features of the `LifeCam' are the low light quality. I simply used indirect light from a window and the picture is fine. Too much light can be worse. The audio is fine as well - not as crisp as the Pro 9000 and a tiny bit tinny, but perfectly adequate. If you want to take a photo with the 2.0 pixel, you know exactly what to expect, as most phone cameras are 1.0 to 2.0 megapixels. There is a slight delay with motion, but that really doesn't matter when you are simply corresponding with another person on the internet. The pan, tilt and zoom are typical of most cameras and is useful. The flexible stand is probably the most inventive part of the camera, allowing you to place it in almost any position, including hanging it over the top of your monitor. This is a very important feature as every person's computer set-up varies.The quality is better than my built-in Dell laptop, but not nearly as good as the Pro 9000. So as the adage goes, you get what you pay for. But to be honest, I don't have great use for a super high quality video camera, so the Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000 is a perfect choice for the beginner who just wants to see and talk with their family or buddies on the internet. All this is based on using SKYPE, but I imagine most providers are similar.

So, I had to do a lot of reading and saw some sites saying that this was a good camera to use with Linux. What I found out was that it was easier than I had expected. I just had to connect the camera, turn on Skype and voila, everything was working.I wasn't looking for the best quality image avaliable and mainly because I knew that I didn't have the best internet connection to send back hd quality, so I'm pretty satisfied that my first webcam worked (so) well under Linux.OS: 9.10 karmic koalaapp used: skype betaconsole?: nope!

I am amazed at the quality and ease of use of this device. The installation went perfectly and I was up in less time that I ever emagined. Not only does it do Webcam functions, but it also does audio clips, vidio clips. It also allows me to send email directly from the cam software. Over all, this is worth the money and then some. Amazon has a great price on this item.
