I was in need of two webcams. I bought this (the Microsoft LifeCam) and a less expensive webcam, a generic Flexible 5.0 Megapixel USB PC Camera with Microphone. The generic webcam was super easy to install and the sound worked great! The Microsoft LifeCam requires software installation, and I could not get the sound to work at all. I was very disappointed. Perhaps it was just this camera and the rest are better, but I am returning the LifeCam and getting two of the other.

Not a bad little camera. I bought a similar logitech one just before this one and had to return it to the store because the mic didn't work. I was glad to return it because the software was kind of annoying and a little intrusive and the camera looked very cheap. I wanted a simple camera that got the job done with an acceptable picture and without any headache. This camera fits that description. Very easy to use, very easy to make and save videos. The software doesn't get in your way or cause problems. The design is very slick, and the mic works very well. Not half bad. Would recommend this to anyone who wanted what I did; A well made, good looking camera that works and has acceptable quality.

It's an okay camera if you don't expect extra sharp images and crisp colors. It's easy to install and works fine. When I ordered it I thought the resolution was higher. It is however 2.0 MP which is just about enough for a skype chat with one's family!

An impressive little camera that has made talking with friends and family that much more fun. Took no time to install, and very easy to do. Picture quality is good, and the mic is clear and strong. I liked it so much, I sent one to my father for Christmas. My mother has one too, and she has no problems or complaints about it.I would (and have) recommend this webcam to anyone who is looking for one to buy.

I purchased this because I have a 6 year old P-4 computer and I wanted the best resolution/video that would run with my computer. This works great. Clear images, microphone picks up sound well. I use it with Skype and it was easy to install and run. Good image in low lighting situations. Great pic in great lighting.

I would have done a video review, but this webcam is just too big of a piece of junk to do that. The picture quality has never been great, but I can deal with that. It's the audio that really killed this product for me. From day one, the audio has had problems. First, there was just a humming noise that would bong out the ears of whoever I was talking with on the other side. Now, the audio has totally given out and the camera is essentially useless unless you know sign language or have a decent external microphone that you can plug in.In short, two thumbs down for this webcam.***EDIT***Ok, I've changed my opinion a little bit about this webcam. But, that is only because I found instructions online for taking the product apart (goodbye warranty) and fixing it so the sound works. The instructions on this website: [...] ' fixed my webcam. It's still not the best cam in the world, but at least it works decently now.

I purchased this item on sale and it was well worth the price. If you're on a budget, this is the webcam to buy. Video quality is very good, especially compared to others in this price range. My mother purchased an alternative and it was absolute rubbish. Installation isn't idiot-proof but it's pretty easy. Overally I'm very satisfied with this item.

awesome web cam for the $$$. Easy to install, just plug it in. I downloaded Skype and away I went. No need to use software included unless you're going to be creative with your pictures.I purchased two of them so I can keep in touch with my grandchildren who live far away. I was able to ship both of them to different locations by using Amazon Prime two day shipping which was free. This web cam was well worth the money! There are many less expensive brands but do yourself the favor and purchase this one. No worries!

I bought this webcam because it had the features I wanted - high resolution, wide viewing angle, and built-in mic - and it was on sale at a significantly lower price than comparable cams from other brands. Now that I've used it some I'm very glad that I got the discount, because it does have a few annoying, though not serious, flaws. Though it captures at fairly high resolutions, the image is often still pretty unclear because the low-light filter makes the image blotchy in all but direct sunlight. Also, if it's left plugged in to the USB port while the computer is rebooted it won't be recognized after the restart for some odd reason, so I have to leave it unplugged and plug it in when I need it.For my uses - mostly the occasional webcam chat and capturing a photo or two - this cam works fine and is worth the money I paid. If I wanted to produce a hi-def weblog or something along those lines though, I think I would spring the money for a better-quality Logitech cam or something.

- Video quality is reasonable for the price- nice range of resolutions for video transmission as well as still shots- fixed focal length - wide angle, but with some electronic zoom,pan,tilt capabilities- has settings for brightness, contrast, saturation etc.- works with skype but without the effect/hats/icon features- physical lens enclosure -- probably the only sure way to prevent hackers from viewing an image at any time.- but details that are not mentioned- electronic zoom, pan, tilt is nice to set up framing, but software does not remember setting and must be re-adjusted for every new start up (It does however remember the brightness, contrast, etc settings !)- 1.2 software is buggy, 2.04 is much better but is a huge download.- installation installs lots of .net overhead that is not used unless you use windows Live. If you accidently touch the top button it will always try to install windows Live. This button is not programmable- It has some nice face tracking software, but is only good for silly hat feature tracking and other icons -- would be nice to connect to the pan and tilt feature to keep in frame....but it doesn't.- it appears that only the White Balance is automatically adjusted. All other settings (brightness, contrast, etc) are manual.- Bright "Microsoft" sign lights up when the camera is active- power is always applied to the camera whether it is on or not, always warm to the touch.

I feel this product is definitely worth it for the price. Only good for laptops though. Picture quality is alright, definitely not as good as they advertise. I found some of the software to not function completely but the camera itself serves its purpose. If you want something for the long term and will use this often, go buy a more expensive camera.

I just bought one of these and installed it in a Windows Vista system. You'd think a Microsoft product would work with Vista, but it doesn't. Some of the controls are mysteriously greyed-out. I did a web search, and this is a common problem (many threads from June 2009). The Microsoft advice? Do a "Clean Reboot" - Give ME A BREAK!DO NOT BUY THIS WEBCAM.

Purchased this unit for use with Skype. Haven't used the sound features, so I can't say anything about this. It is far less likely to freeze up with Skype than the Logicam it replaced. Also, it seems to have built-in image stabilization, which is a very nice feature. Recommend this unit.

I bought this webcam for my daughter who is proudly serving her country in Iraq. We have the same model here at home. Christmas was almost as nice as having her here. We opened gifts over Skype with her and for a little while we were able to forget she was thousands of miles away. My daughter LOVES the special effects that are easily accessible and drives her fiance crazy making silly faces. Having this really helps keep her closer to all of us until her deployment is over.

This webcam never worked for me. After installing the software my Windows XP system constantly froze or slowed down. The video only worked briefly within the Lifecam application, but never on Skype or Microsoft's Instant Messenger. I never had these issues with Logitech devices.

For the price this web cam can't be beat. I've seen cams built into notebooks that claim to have decent resolution, and I've used several Logitech cams. But I like this one the best of all of them. It's easy to use and set up with no "invasive" software (uhg, Logitech), and installed in seconds. I use windows 7 x64 and everything worked without a hitch.

I don't have a whole lot of experience with webcams but this one sure beats the old freebie that comcast gave me. Good quality picture, easy to use and install, great price. The only thing that's a slightly disappointing is that it doesn't grip the top of my laptop screen all that well. You kind of have to balance it on there to get just the right angle. Not a problem if the laptop is still, but if you want to walk around with it, it will fall off. great for free-standing on the desk tho.

It won't let me choose what drive to install it on; it just automatically installs it on my C drive, which I don't have much space on. It wouldn't be that big of a deal, but it won't let me change the folder location for all of the videos you make, so while I have 780 gigs of room on other partitions, I can't use them because Microsoft is too stupid to allow you to choose installation or folder locations. They offer no online help because you have to give a product ID number, which doesn't actually exist. It tells you to go to the menu, click help, and then about. Well, it has help/about in separate choices, and neither of them show your ID number, so you're screwed.Oh, and I installed it and tried messing with the brightness/contrast. With the brightness all the way down, it's still way too bright. Horrible camera. Buy something else unless you don't care about product support, installation choices, folder locations, or brightness levels.

The webcam is excellent for the price. I didn't use the software included with the webcam. I only used the driver (it would have been an easier installation if the driver was in a separate file). I'm using Skype with Windows XP. No problems with the picture or sound (only small problem is if you move too quickly, the picture blurs - I don't know if that's a software or hardware problem). The base isn't designed for a laptop. It doesn't fit tightly on the laptop screen, so you have to balance it on the screen or placed it on a table.

I got this webcam to use with my long-distance boyfriend and we use it almost every night, it has great image quality and works perfectly with skype. I definitely recommend this webcam. I rated the grip a 2 because it is difficult to get it to stay on top of a laptop, but once you do its fine. If you're looking for a new webcam, get this one!

The camera was a snap to install. It produces images that are quite nice for the price, and more than sufficient for Skype conversations. My biggest complaint is the darn Windows Live Call button on top of the camera that automatically starts Windows Live. I am constantly accidentally pushing the button when adjusting the height of the camera. Like many other reviewers, I found the software that comes with the camera slow and loaded with trial-ware that I had no use for. I disabled it and just use the camera for my Skype video calls [Skype recognizes the camera no problem].It is also very portable and easy to travel with. The flexible base lets you always find a place to put it when on the road.A nice camera at a great price for basic use.

We have a fast processor and plenty of memory, as well as a decent video card. The image this camera produces is still pretty herky-jerky, and the color just plain sucks. Audio is nothing to jump up and down and clap about, either.

This product met all my expectations. I was a bit concerned after reading reports about good, better and best models. Maybe I went too cheap? I did not. This thing works great. I was shocked at the quality of the images within the limitations of a web cam. If you need good photo quality, buy a digital camera. If you need great videos, buy a video camera. If you want a great web cam, buy this one. Why would you want a web cam for videos and pictures anyway? There is a cord attached and you would have to work with that limitation. It works perfectly for what it is intended to do. It does not work well on photos or video if you are comparing it to products designed specifically for that purpose.I have compared this little web cam with $100 Logic techs and, believe it or not, the video quality is better, so is the low light capability. The only lighting I use is the LCD screen of my computer. It supplies all the light this thing needs!The software has been much commented on. I find it more than adequate. I am not sure what the other companies offer, but this one has all I need. It does have the funny pictures paste on stuff, but this is for kids. The quality is first class, the installation was painless (Vista) and I am very happy with this web cam.

This webcam is perfect! It is small enough to take it anywhere. There is an additional delicate small round black box for the webcam to protect it. The most important is that it is very easy to use. Just plug in the USB. Very good!

The Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000 works as expected. The only problems we've encountered is slow transmission speed from the carrier. If that is encountered the webcam can "freeze". We've purchased three of these and have never experienced a defective unit. Again, if you have a fairly up-to-date PC and communicate with someone who also possesses modern equipment, and use a broadband transmission medium, you'll be very pleased with your Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000.

This works good. I talk to my granddaughter with it. Although I'm not sure about the sound. We had to use a head set to hear each other. We have the same Web Cam. It's easy to hook up. You may have to adjust the pictuer quality the way you want it. I adjusted mine and it was fine.

I bought this camera actually two of them for my girlfriend and me. The service was great but what microsoft does not tell you is not to install the software from the cd. My girlfriend ran the cd and crashed her computer and killed her computer's battery, well i got mine a little late and I had read the reviews about this camera and decided it was a good one. when i finally got mine i ran the cd and it crashed my computer and killed my power adapter. The picture quality is not that great the camera keeps freezing every now and then and sometimes the display(the video) flashes green, blue or red. I would not recommend this to anyone as its not worth the trouble it will cause you.

I loved this camera so much for myself, that I bought one for my husband. His worked so well, I bought one for my sister and one for my brother. We use the camera with Skype to stay in touch since we are scattered around the country. It works great and is super easy to install.

To test the microphone out, I went on xfire with my friends and everyone actually understood everything I said, some even complimented my mic. Honestly, I never expected it to work on messenger but i'm glad i can talk to people instead of basic typing. The most important thing about a webcam however, is the picture. This webcam captures video at 1.3MP, so you don't ever have to worry about having a stretched mosaic. It comes with a control applet allowing you to use digital zoom to make things appear bigger. Personally, I find this to be a cheap way of providing a zoom function. One nice thing is the low light sensitivity, which when turned on makes it VERY easy to see in the dark. Every product has at least one annoying feature, and the LifeCam was no exception. The single most annoying feature on the LifeCam is the button on top of the camera. The Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000 is available directly from Microsoft. MSRP: $49.95, what needs improvement: Annoying button placement, high price, and non-motorized movement. webcam got a 7.6 because I compared it to others in its price. I think it should be in the $20-$30. To customers looking for a webcam this one is a good deal so i would rate it 9/10 because i found it simple to use and install.

I don't know why but this is not working fully with my Skype on my windows computer.I have a mac too but when I try just to use the Camera (Because MacBook already got microphone inside)it shut off the Skype in 5 seconds...So I am not really recommending this product.But the Logistic one! They do greater job!

This camera costs almost twice as much as the VX-3000, and it is debatable whether it offers enough for the price difference to be worthwhile. The VX-3000 is a very good buy and no doubt will make most average users very happy. That said, however, the VX-6000 does offer superior quality for those who want it, and still offers a better quality/price ratio than comparable Logitech or Creative products. Image is EXTREMELY crisp, and many of my on-line chat pals have commented that they were impressed. The wide-angle lens is also a big plus (in fact, it was what made me decide to pay more and get it), and it works well with little light.On the down side, two things:1) The absolutely irritating "Windows Live Call" button that gets easily pressed by accident and pops up Windows Live Messenger (still widely known as MSN Messenger). But there is an easy workaround:a. Rename the file "IcePick.exe" in the installed camera programs folder (usually, "C:\Program Files\Microsoft LifeCam") to something else.b. Create an EMPTY file (size 0 bytes) named "IcePick.exe" (for example, right-click on that folder's right pane in Windows Explorer, create a new empty text file and DON'T open it; then rename it and confirm that you want to change the extension).Step (a) disables the button already, but if you don't perform step (b), when you access the camera utility "Properties" window (to change exposure, brightness, etc.) the driver will reinstall itself (asking for the CD, etc.) and restore the original "IcePick.exe" undoing what you did. But after performing both steps, the button is dead. If you want to restore the functionality, just delete the empty "IcePick.exe" and rename the old file back to its original name.2) When lighting conditions change too suddenly (for example, when a brightly lit arm comes quickly closer to the camera) it may reset the feed and go dark for a second or two while the driver adjusts itself. Sometimes this can be annoying, and I don't know if there is a way to tweak the driver so that it doesn't adjust itself so often.Other than these two points, however, the VX-6000 one of the best webcams I have ever seen and I don't hesitate to recommend it. No camera is perfect and other models and brands certainly have their down sides, too. The ones I've found are tolerable, and pale in comparison with this product's excellent quality.A final tip: the driver on the CD is almost certainly outdated. [...]
