I had a bit of trouble when I first received the webcam because the CD-ROM was not functioning properly.So I looked up as many solutions as I could, but there only seemed to be one answer, and that was to download the 'related software and drivers'. So to make a long story short, that did NOT work for me. So I received an answer that did work.[...]^CleanBoot^My computer runs on Windows 7, 64 bit. So if you have trouble with the CD-ROM, do this. It works like a charm.Otherwise, the webcam works great. I'm lovin it thus far! Fun features, good quality. The auto-focus isn't that big of a deal to change; takes two seconds. So I definitely recommend this product!

Length:: 4:18 MinsWhile the picture-taking quality of this webcam is excellent, the auto-focus feature becomes very distracting after a short period of time......and you'll see why after you watch this video.Hope this helps!

I tested it yesterday and it was just perfect. You have to be careful with settings though, hd video capture can generally cause the sound to be off a bit if you are capturing audio as well. But otherwise the mic works great too on it.

I've tried numerous times to get the video review upload to take, but it never works, so I'm just going to write a review...First of all, the problems with autofocus are real. It's quite unbelievable that Microsoft would release a product that literally has to re-focus every minute, or less. When I say re-focus, it literally racks itself from one end of the focus spectrum to the other, blurring you severely when it does. Horrible! This seems to happen most when recording on 720p, and not so much on lower resolutions. As mentioned, to remedy this, you have to turn the True Color function off, then go into the menus and check the box to make autofocus change to manual.Another thing is that this camera is not "really" HD. It's the same resolution as a 640x480 camera, but with a wider width. Higher resolutions above that are just dithered-in (interpolated?) using software. The HD image is not really that impressive at all -- just an upscaled lower resolution.Audio is a disappointment. It seems to record a slight hiss in the background, which is not a problem with other Microsoft models I've used. The signal-to-noise ratio is about that of an old cassette player using Dolby B. Don't ask me why it's that way on a digital product, but it is -- there is some hiss there. Other webcams don't do this on my computer.I bought this camera to replace a Microsoft VX-5000 model that quit working after a year (I think the cleaning lady killed it). I was satisfied with that model, and after owning the two, I feel the VX actually has a better overall image, and certainly better audio too. The lower resolution VX does better in low-light, and has better overall contrast. The HD-5000 has a lot of noise in the image.Do yourself a favor. Avoid this camera.

Great camera, no complaints from people I talk to with it, video or audio. I can always be heard fine and seen clearly. The auto focus feature is annoying because it seems to be trying to refocus about every 15 seconds. This may be user error though. Shipment arrived on time.

Last weekend I finally got the chance to install this on my mom's desktop as an upgrade to her n-year-old VGA Logitech webcam. The installation went very smoothly although a bit slowly, but we were able to start testing the webcam inside Skype in under 5 minutes since I opened the box. The picture quality is frankly quite stunning if you have never seen it from an HD webcam. You actually see unwanted facial details with proper focus.Alas, as complained by almost every reviewer, the autofocus of this webcam is questionable at best and frankly seems to be working against you. It just keeps hunting even in moderate light. (In bright light it's ok.) This almost makes the webcam unusable... except that we got it from Vine so it's not really something we intended to return. Fortunately, we found out how to turn autofocus off and everything is back to order.The audio quality of this webcam is nothing to write home about. It works ok and has some noise cancellation, but it does pick up more noise than a dedicated headset. It does have adequate recording volume and my mom can finally get rid of her headset (and have one less possible confusion in skype).From reading the product literature, I know that this webcam also has some fancy feature in the video effects (like enlarging the mouth dynamically). However, since our primary application is to let my mom use it with skype, we never got to those features.Overall, we are quite pleased with the webcam (once the AF is turned off). The AF issue is why one star has been taken off. I hope MS fix it with a software/firmware upgrade soon.

Really enjoying this LifeCam HD-5000. It was so easy to install and the clarity and sound were the best. I was amazed how easy and quick the Cam mounts on my PC. It was a very good choice on my part. The item was delivered to me faster than the estimate arriving date in Amazon. And I think this webcam is really an excellent one within this range of price. I did not have to install any software, just plug it in and it works for both WinXP and Win7 (I tried it with 2 laptops).

I have been using this webcam for a few weeks now. I can really say that this is the best webcam for the value that I have used and come across. The picture quality is good. It was easy to install on a Windows based PC. Windows instantly recognizes it as soon as you plug in the USB and generates Windows Lifecam software. I might be asking for too much, but it would be cool if it came with a better interface software to do more with it. I would recommend this webcam to anyone on any budget. I can't give it a complete 5 star rating, but 4 stars is not too shabby.

I have two of these. They are PERFECT except for that zoom problem which can be turned off in the software. Once you set it however to OFF (the autozoom) it will turn itself back on mysterously months later (maybe becausee of driver updates?. I dont know. The zoom is annoying it zooms when there is no change of movement and it makes noice on the far end too. It is easy enough to set the focus to 15 and leave it until it gets reset again. Great camera otherwise. I wouldnt let the zoom feature dissuade you from a purchase. The prices on these are a good value many times. Buy it, and uncheck the autozoom box as needed. You will love it.

I was not happy with the prior camera I had. So ordered this one after reading other reviews. Found that it works so much better. Has a much clearer picture according to my daughter as now we can Skype and get to see the new grandson.Highly recommend it.

This camera is totally plug and play in Ubuntu Linux since at least 9.04. I'm running it perfectly with Skype for Linux. It may be compatible with earlier versions of Ubuntu but I haven't personally tested it. The most ironic thing is IMHO this camera is easier to use in Linux than in Windows. With Windows you'll need to install software and configure a live account to get it working. Who would have thought a Microsoft hardware product would ever be so linux friendly.

I am very impressed by the quality of this camera. The images are sharp and clear and the installation was a breeze. My home office is heavily backlit and the camera does a good job of adjusting the image so the important stuff in the foreground looks good.

I got 2 of these cameras as I didn't want to spend $75 for the logitech C910 although I know that one is amazing and has a great video/voice quality... but I for the same amount of money I can get 3 of these... it's doing its job with a nice quality....

I have use it with a desktop computer, Windows 7 x64Pros:- Good in low light- Easy to configure- Nice camera effect for chat- You can turn up and down the camera len, so easy to mount to laptop. I was have some fix to mount it to my desktop LCD.Cons:- You must install software first, installation requires internet connection and you must set default browser is Internet Explorer to continue the setup.- Quite heat but no so hot even the camera is not in use

This webcam is garbage. The drivers don't work in windows 7 unless you have directx 10 or higher. Got an old video card that doesn't have directx 10 drivers? Tough luck. Won't work for you.It's a webcam, no good reason to ever use a video card. Unless you're a lazy programmer and can't write drivers without directx.Logitech cam I replaced this with worked perfectly btw. No hardware acceleration required...Logitech Webcam C500 with 1.3MP Video and Built-in Microphone [Retail Packaging]

This webcam has a very good picture quality, it's sleek and good looking and easy to use. The price is right, too! The mic works very well too, it picks surrounding sounds very well. What else can I say, it's just a webcam.I had some trouble installing this on my Windows XP SP3 computer. I was overdue for one of those HD wipe outs that I do every few years (to get rid of all the garbage you accumulate over time, when you don't have time/will to go through the registry), and I couldn't install the drivers (it would kick me out halfway through the installation of the CD). I suspected (correctly) that some of the garbage I had was interfering with the driver installer. When I installed Windows XP on my second HD, the drivers went through without a hitch, and the camera worked flawlessly.

Bought this for my mom when I was moving away so we could video chat. I set it up for her-very easy, quick as far as these things go. I was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality especially! The picture is very good too, probably better than my built-in on my Mac.I would definitely recommend this product. Best for the price, not worth spending more for vaguely better picture quality. Unless you want to spend a few hundred dollars, go with this one!

I got this for $27 and I thought it was a great deal. Whats the point of autofocus when it needs to be turned off since it goes nuts? I don't understand how Microsoft advertises it as if it's a must on webcams....hmmm.....

I'm really glad I got this web-cam years after its release.The installation was, for the most part, a breeze. The disc wouldn't load on Windows 7 64bit as it was blocked. That's OK, it started searching for the solution. In the meantime I Googled it myself and found the latest software. About 10 seconds afterwards the Microsoft service found their solution, but one version previous the one I found.The video quality is fairly atrocious. Even properly focused it's still blurry an has extreme visual noise. I've gotten far better image quality from lesser-priced and quality cams. My guess is Microsoft just had them push the CCD voltage waaay too high. I'd rather have a slower frame-rate or *gasp* use some of my 6 CPUs to do some software tinkering to bring the light levels up without killing the quality with an ever-shifting noise. Basically imagine a static TV but use green and red as overlay onto all your video. This is even in fairly bright room lighting.I can't get all of the effects to work. For example, none of the 3d effects work, I just get a flashing red square in the corner.Oh yeah, did I mention that MS doesn't even make it easy to link to the product support page? So there's no way for me to figure out what the hell that square might mean.Save your money, probably get a Logitech product.

Purchased this web cam (my first) to use with on-line chat. Picture quality is outstanding, zoom is awesome. Like the bendable foot which allows for different angles of mounting. Resolution adjusts for best picture and life-like colors and skin tones. Much better than built-in cam on a friend's Toshiba lap top. Microphone is unbelievable. I am 1/4 mile away from railroad tracks and train horn is clearly audible to person receiving my broadcast. One small complaint is that owner's manual could be more complete. Installation tip: turn off all automatic virus/malware/etc software during installation. After, cam works fine with these programs on. A definite winner, buy this one.

You get something new in a box for your computer and you assume it works, right? Wrong. I got a camera for my laptop....Microsoft, no less, and my laptop didn't even see me plug it in. So, off to the $75 dollar-an-hour guy (I'm thinking I have USB probs). "Nope", he says, "We tried it on 3 different computers. Your camera is bad. So my 30 dollar camera turned into a $100+ camera real quick.And now I have to go through the whole RMA, ship it back, wait forever stuff.Recommend? Not.

This camera serves my purpose for the infrequent video calls I make. Would not recommend for anyone who needs to use more often. The software Microsoft provides is really slow and sometimes the effects just don't work. I would have thought my system (AMD 3.4 quad core and 6 GB RAM) would have been fast enough, but the software crawls and sometimes will give me a message that my computer isn't powerful enough. Also this camera has very bad auto focus. About every 10-15 seconds the focus resets and re-adjusts. I purchased two of these for two different computers and they both have this problem. A firmware update from MS helped a little but didn't completely fix. There is an option to disable auto-focus in the software, but you have to disable every time you use the camera. If the auto-focus issue was fixed and you could avoid the MS software, this camera would have been great.

This is a good piece of equipment. I like the fact you can turn off the auto focus, it is a little sensitive and adjusts after every movement. You can turn this off however and it works wonderfly.

This camera is very easy to install on a Windows-based computer, as it is a Microsoft product. Therefore, the installation disk wasn't necessary and the system recognized the device when I inserted the wire into the USB port. The driver was installed fairly quickly and the camera was ready to use.The installation software was automatically pulled from Microsoft's web-site and launched quickly. The only thing I needed to do was click yes on the agreement. I did not try to install this on my MAC as it already has a built in camera so I am not sure how easy the installation would be for that device.The LifeCam software was ready to use but it did not install a desk ICON so it needed to be launched from the Start menu. The camera itself is black which matched the color of my system (my other Windows computer is silver). The camera itself attaches to the top of the screen using a bendible strip for the back of the screen and a tab to hold the front of the screen. My only complaint with this is that my screen is round in the back (my other screen is straight in the back) so the bendible strip could not get a snug fit with the tab. This is readily fixed with a small piece of two-sided tape. Once mounted the camera looks good with the screen.The picture quality of the camera is above average and it is able to let you view video on the screen with no time lag. The quality of the picture camera is ok for this type of device, almost as good as the cameras on the new smart phones.Overall, a good buy for the money.

I ordered this webcam, based on some reviews and also I didn't want to buy a high end one. I found, the installation to be easy and the webcam has a very good clarity even in low light condition. I am very happy about this purchase and plan to buy one more for my parents.I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a cheap bargain.-- PS

This camera was decent quality - definitely not as good as a High Definition webcam. I had trouble keeping the camera attached to the screen of my laptop, as it fell off whenever I moved my laptop. The image quality was acceptable, but was often grainy and very slow - many of my webchats ended up being choppy. I suppose this low-quality camera would be a great buy if you don't want to feel self-conscious when you are webchatting. The low-quality image will be sure to not pick up on pimples and minor blemishes.

I got this webcam because the price was reasonable & the resolution was 720p. What I found, though, is that that the auto focus from this webcam is a major headache. I found that you had to be really close so that your face fills most of the screen or far enough away that any background behind you was close to the depth you were sitting at - neither of these options work well for me. Instead of the camera picking an object in the center to focus on, it continually switched back & forth between the foreground & background behind me. And neither depth satisfied the camera so every so many seconds the focus changed - never stopping - and literally changing focus (and making the video blurry) hundreds of times in a video that lasted less than 10 mins. This is really annoying. Why not give it a center focus for the auto program - at least if you were sitting in the middle you would know it was focused on you. Or how about the ability to set a depth focus of so many feet, limiting the attempt of this camera to try to focus objects too far away. I thought the picture quality when it worked looked great, but that seemed less important with focus issuing. Either way, it may work for you but as a whole I will stick to using my Flip and when needed the built in webcam from my other computer.

It was so easy to install the webcam that took me less than 10 minutes,I have window 7,all I did was plug in the USB,and the rest was taken care by the computer.Very happy with the way the webcam works,especialy with the price I paid for it,I have no complain at all.Highly recomanded to everybody.

It does what I need it to do. My family can see me clearly on their end. I didn't use the CD for installation. Windows 7 just picked up the software when I plugged it in and then allowed me to run the installation process. Only mystery to me is the built in microphone. It has one, yet my family didn't hear me when I spoke, so I just slipped on my headphones with microphone and talked with that.

Sound & photo quality is excellent. I bought this mainly to keep in touch with my friends in other countries. I am not into the whole webcam thing, but this one is excellent, I love the auto focus feature & it captures even if your 5 feet away, your still crystal clear lol.

I received one of the Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000 webcams from the Amazon Vine review program, which was welcome given that my wife was starting to ask about getting a webcam for her computer. I went ahead and installed it for her, and put it through some paces. It's a solid webcam with all the features you'd expect (zoom, decent microphone, picture taking ability, etc. It installed easily, and I had no problems interfacing it to the normal chat programs that she uses, like Skype. All in all, it works like it should.Probably the most unique feature on this device is the flexible base. As odd as it may sound, the base can make or break a webcam's usefulness for someone. If it's not able to sit well on your monitor or perch on your laptop, it can be nearly useless. This webcam has a flexible base that you can mold to the contours of wherever you're placing it. I was able to curve the base to fit the top of her monitor perfectly, and it ended up very stable. That feature alone is enough to put this ahead of the pack when it comes to standard/basic webcam recommendations.For what I was looking for, this was a very good webcam. I needed a Web Camera to participate in a Video Conference presenting to 200 people. The camera virtually plugged in and worked very well with no adjustments required. Now I'm using with Skype for friends and family that have that. This camera was a GREAT deal.

I mainly bought this webcam to shoot videos. I'm a QuickBooks Consultant and I wanted to start producing videos to market my business. I had done one with a camera that was on a tripod. That came out pretty good, but took a while to set up and make sure I would be in the video. The Life-Cam VX-5000 was easy to set up and is always ready for me to shoot my next video. The picture and sound quality are great at about 2 to 3 feet from the webscam.I intend to use the LifeCam VX-5000 for making video calls to family, friends and clients. That hasn't happened yet, but at least I have the capabilities to do so.I paid $27.99 at Amazon.com, while Best Buy wanted $44.99 for the same webcam. Even with the shipping cost, I still saved around $12.

I bought this camera because a friend with whom I skype everyday had it, and I noticed it was an auto focus camera as well as excellent "pure white" crystal clear picture. The only time that isn't true is when Skype itself is having problems. Then everyone, no matter what camera they bought, has a problem. Fortunately, they are quick to fix their issues.I highly recommend this camera.
