Who's life is it, anyway?As much as I have never cared all that much for Microsoft peripherals, there are generally two things you can count on: That they will work nearly perfectly with Windows, and that they will try to download and install a bunch of other apps that will put you more in thrall of the Evil Empire.Having said that, I can also say it's a pretty cool little camera, seems to do its job quite well. Installation is as usual, I like how they drive home the point that the software must be installed first by taping a warning label completely across the end of the USB connector.The software is easy to navigate, (mostly because it is so simple) and offers a lot of control over the image but it is rather sparse with regard to file management - I am still looking for a way to change the default folder. Or turn off the "shutter" noise.A variety of effects can be applied to the image, such as silly masks, bunny faces, funhouse mirror distortions, colorization, reverse color, sepia, B&W. Really practical stuff.It has a curious watchband sort of flexible rubber bar at the back that conforms to almost any shape you care to hang it on, or fold back to be freestanding. It would have been nice it you could rotate the head 90°, but that should be doable in software (unconfirmed.)I am having a little trouble getting the clips and captured into the folders I want, by default of course they go to My Documents, etc etc. and there appears to be no way to change this.The color is good, and the focus sometimes takes a moment to think about it before it snaps in, but once locked on pretty much stays there.The true test of course is how it looks online. I currently am not using Skype or any other face-to-face setup, so that would be the next test, for which I will append this review.All in all this is a decent mid-priced camera- but the reason I have never bought one is there are simply too many to choose from. I suspect it would take an instinctive grasp of specs and the ability to get a mental picture from them simply by looking at the box.Or by reading Amazon reviews, of course!

Skeptical because there were no reviews. So I went on CNET & they give this cam a great review. Its bendable, so it'll adjust to whatever size ur screen may be- prolly best for flat screen desktops that arent completely flat & notebooks. No cd to install. Just hook it up & ur on ur way. It wants u to make a microsoft id, which i did, but thats a waste since i cant seem to log onto the chat. So just go to skype & sign up- much easier! This cam is great 4 travel. Just take it with u- no big lens to get busted- hook it up 2 whatever computer & log onto Skype & ur done. U can do black & white, and a few others. Also, ur mouth doesnt keep moving once uve stoped talking- like some webcams- which is a great plus 4 me! Great webcam for a great price- u will indeed get ur money's worth!

My small business needed an innexpensive way to hold video calls with customers, as well as suppliers.The Microsoft LifeCam HD-5000 720p Webcam has met the need very well. It is True 720p HD video, has AutoFocus, 16:9 widescreen, and TrueColor Technology. At $25, it is an exceptional value for the money.

I bought this webcam for picture taking,skype,and google voice with my family and its working great. It can auto-focus or manual focus. The tru color looks great outside. The visual effects are a little slow but are lots of fun. The only downside is the clip on base did not like the me trying to clip it on a Lego. (Stop motion videos are good with this the only downside is that it won't work with stop-motion programs like MonkeyJam,iKit,Helium Frog,or Anazi.) It is a very good webcam! I highly recommend it.

I needed a new webcam and microphone because the ones that were built into my laptop were horrible. The sound comes in perfectly clear and you can shoot videos in 720p with it so it works great. The only thing I don't like is that it auto focuses about every ten seconds which is annoying. You can turn this off in the software that comes with it but you will have to keep turning it off because the settings don't save when you turn off your computer. Other than that I love this webcam!

This was my first webcam and its great. I wasn't sure if certain OS had webcams that went with it but this worked for my Windows 7. And the quality of the pictures and videos are great! I have a fairly dark room and it still works with dim light. And I love how it fits to any computer monitor, I have a 22" Acer monitor and it fits great.

Audio pick up is very clear and image is great. Plugged in and running within 2 minutes. Microsoft items may cost a bit more but functionality and compatibililty cannot be surpassed. Would definately recommend.

I got this webcam today thinking that it was going to be a great cam for my laptop. Boy was I wrong, I cant get the display to work on it. I think that buying this product and having it shipped to you is a waste of your money and time. It was supposed to be a little Christmas present to my self more like Merry Christmas here is a broken webcam. I'm going to call Microsoft and complain about how lousy this product is.

It is very laggy when all the settings are turned on auto....Also I have a pretty good processor and it keeps saying that my hardware is low when it is better then any normal laptop that would be using this. Next is the fact that you could brake this webcam by poking it. Mine fell about 6 inches off a chair and landed on the item that I was using to stand it up and it doesn't work anymore. The software it comes with sucks. I can't even install it on my XP machine. It crashes when trying to install it...Don't get me started about the "auto focus" It more like auto focusing forever then not focusing on what ever it is suppose to. I do not recommend this at all.

bought this cam to mainly use for skype.Pros: small, compact, sleek, easy to install, image quality looks good when in focus (get to more of that in the cons)Cons: not much functionality or settings for both built-in mic and camera, Mic makes a lot of loud static noises and weird ringing sounds on the other end, No helpful settings to reduce gain or back ground noise, Camera takes long to focus (sometimes up to 3-5secs) and seems like its always trying to focus every few secs or so even tho i'm not moving, again very limited setting options for the camera, has lots of little specs(dots) on lens of the camera so pictures/vids have tiny bright spots on them especially in the dark, no mirroring option, MS Lifecam software isn't that great (very basic and limited), no choice of what folder to save Images and vids to (only saves to default folder)price: for almost $30 i expected a lot better

Outdoor webcam? Not its intended purpose but that is where my first HD-6000 is and operating for almost a year now. It works in conjunction with my weather station website KWAGOLDB6, from dawn to dusk. Simple and inexpensive. Just bought this second one to use as it was intended and to replace a built-in one that failed.It is sold as a "Webcam for Notebooks" and yes, it works for that too! The HD-6000 is all good at this price range.

Well packaged camera. Fits neatly on top of my monitor. Picture is very clear and has several resolution options. The software offers some cutesy pie hair styles. Auto focus works good and is easy to turn off. Would be nice if MS offered some bonus downloads at their site. Good price

This camera performs exactly as advertised and doesn't cost too much. After my second logitech camera broke I decided to try another brand and step up to HD while I was at it. I wasn't sure the bandwidth could support HD, and I'm still not sure if it actually does, but those on the other end of my connection always comment on how good my picture is. The camera has a mic as well which works very well. It's Microsoft so it works seamlessly with Windows 7 and, unlike my last logitech camera install, the software and drivers install quickly. Recommended.

Picture and microphone works great. But one thing I really hate is the auto focus. This thing refocuses every 5 seconds and it gets super annoying when you are chatting with someone. Even if you stay very still, the camera keeps auto focusing and will even auto focus when there's no object in the background moving. For the price, it delivers a great picture and sound quality, but the auto focus kills it.You can turn off the auto focus feature, but you do not get crisp video every time.I would only recommend it if you are the occasional video chatter and plan to annoy the other party tremendously.

I purchased this to replace a dead camera from an aftermarket manufacturer.This unit was cheaper and works fine.It has excellent picture quality and takes good snapshots.It'svwell built and it's worked for over a year without any problems.The camera it replaced was from Lo----ch,which had died after 2 days and left me with a $40 paperweight.Microsoft is far surperior.

Awesome webcam, can get up to 720p HD recording which looks awesome for any type of video recording. Only con about the webcam is it keeps trying to refocus the camera, haven't figured out how to change that yet. Definitely would recommend this to a friend.

Once I received the camera I loved it. It fits perfectly on top of my laptop. The only problem I have with it is the Auto Focus. I use the camera quite often (everyday) and I hate turning the auto focus off every time I want to use the camera. If you do not turn it off than you will look blurry most of the time you are using it. Overall great product my only con is the auto focus.

It's a pretty good camera, and had it only been the hardware I would have given it 5 stars. As it happens, when you just use it plug&play the autozoom acts up blurring the image every 20 seconds. If you install the drivers online, you can set autozoom off and it's fine. Since I have a windows/linux dual boot and mostly use linux, setting autozoom off is a bit harder.Otherwise the hardware itself, the colors and resolution etc are pretty great for the price.

Wow - this was the first time that I used touchable 3D holographic technology and it is AMAZING! Not only can I see someone hundreds or thousands of miles away, this camera allows me to literally shake the hands of an international partner or to kiss my daughter goodnight on her cheek when I am out of town. This is a must for anyone who feels a disconnect with regular video chatting.Additionally, this camera has boosted my computer's speed, increased my monitor size, and even allows my DVD drive to read BlueRay disks. Not to mention that I have lost 30 pounds and have quit smoking since using this camera. And for thirty bucks - what a bargain!

I bought this webcam over a year ago to Skype with my boyfriend in the military. I've had a few problems with it... 1) right out of the box, the snapshot/"picture" button on it didn't work. 2) it can be difficult to mount on top of a typical laptop. And 3) after about 5-6 months of use, I can't use it for more than 5 minutes before it flips the picture upside down and turns it green. Not sure if something inside is broken, but if that's the case, then it is a flimsy piece of crap camera. I expected better from Microsoft.

Received Lifecam with anticipation. However, after installing, the microphone did not work. Followed all instructions for checking, but it still didn't work. Video picture was great. Had it checked by my son, using his computer--still no mic. Called Microsoft and they replaced it. Still haven't hooked it up, but trust I will enjoy seeing my grandchildren on Skype sometime soon!

We purchased for Christmas gifts so we could see our children & grandchildren that live so far from us. The picture is as if we were sitting across from each other. Amazing! Have seen others, they don't compare with clarity! Good price on Amazon! Saved 1/2 from store price!

Read the reviews here and they're mixed reviews.I have Windows 7 64bit and i am very computer savvy. Now i didnt have to do much, just plugged it in and windows did the rest. Camera works flawless except for the auto focus which is horrendous and it creates a blurry image every 15-20 seconds.All you need to do is go to settings and disable it.

I picked this up for chatting with my wife while I was in Japan and am pretty happy with it.Pros:-The video quality is very good, much better than the built in camera on her laptop.-The mic was very sensitive and I could move around the hotel room without shouting.-Comes with a handy little pouch and the built in cable-minder is also well designed.-Can clip onto just about anything shaped like a picture frame.-Swivel head had a good range of motion and wasn't too loose.Cons:-Small gripe here but the indicator light can be hard to spot compared with normal cams. It's the little blue ring where the unit swivels.-And the big gripe is a software issue, they'll patch it someday I hope. The autofocus does this pulsing cycle where it drifts out and then jerks back into focus. You can disable it in the settings and set it at infinite focus(0) and things are just fine. However there isn't a way to change the defaults so when you reboot your computer it will re-enable autofocus and you have to disable it all over again. There's discussion of the issue on many forums but no fix that I've seen to date.When they fix the software this will be a 5 star webcam.

Handy gadget, very easy to use, light and good quality product. The picture is not as sharp with low lighting but does what it needs to do. Great for Skype or similar applications. Couldn't mount that on my laptop though, the panel is too thin for its flexible handle.

Up until now, the products we've purchased from Microsoft have been at least average quality. Not so with this camera. Not matter what we try, the camera autofocus will not hold a sharp picture and the image is almost constantly blurry. Recommend a less expensive version such as the 3000. Don't buy this one--not worth the postage to send it back!

Length:: 4:13 MinsThis is a good camera.Good Stuff:It takes pretty high quality photos and videos(see video).It fixes the lighting, even in very poor lighting. My room was kinda dark when I recorded this, yet you'd never be able to tell just by lookingIt works with Skype, Yahoo Messenger and Facebook.You really can't beat the price. I got it for $21.95.Bad Stuff:The autofocus sucks. You can take it off but you have to do so every time you start the camera up.It takes up a lot of Memory. I'm using 4GB of memory and 500GB of storage here, and an AMD 2.1GH processor running Windows 7. If you have less than 1GB, This is not a camera for you. I ran it on my old desktop (a WIN XP) that only had 512MB of memory and 33 gigs of storage and I got Blue screened the first time and the pc froze the second time.It says it's made for laptops but it's pretty awkward up there on my laptop. It took some positioning, but I finally got it to stay. However, once you have a flat surface nearby, that works too.Overall, it's a good camera and I would recommend it.

Even though we use it to visit with family in other parts of the world, my family and I still have a blast playing with all the little extra features that allow us to make our faces look silly. I am still thrilled at how cheap the pricing was! By far worth every penny!!!

Simply put, the picture quality of the LifeCam HD-5000 is amazing, and despite losing out in terms of absolute resolution (720p is only ~0.9 MP) to some of the other webcams on the market, the HD-5000's sharp focus, low noise, excellent low-light performance, and life-like color produced superior results. Frankly, it is better than my older Logitech QuickCam for Notebooks Pro, a newish Rosewill true 1.3MP webcam, and the several built-in webcams I've used over the years. The built-in forward-facing microphone works as expected, and the stand is quite innovative and worked well stand-alone and hanging on my laptop's monitor.Despite producing quality video and stills, however, the HD-5000 is far from perfect. Firstly, the auto focus implementation is TERRIBLE. Not only is it SLOW to focus (up to 4 seconds), but it is also triggered very easily. Second, the lack of hardware acceleration makes for high CPU usage. Simply looking at myself at 720p consumed 30-40% of my laptop's CPU and recording 720p video ate up 70-80%. (I am running 32-bit Windows XP with 4GB RAM with a Pentium Dual Core T4300 @ 2.1 GHz - 800MHz FSB, 1 MB L2) To add insult to injury, the 720p video was captured at only 15 FPS, which is only half of the advertised "true HD-quality video at up to 30 fps."The LifeCam software is pretty basic, but has a few fun features. Besides allowing you to set the capture resolution for photos and videos, the software lets you perform basic transformations such as making your head square, making your eyes extra large, etc. You can also overlay various objects such as big hair, a cowboy hat, etc. It is worth noting that the HD-5000 didn't work out of the box with SkypeHD, but it did work with regular skype, and internet video-chat.As it stands, I am a bit torn about the HD-5000. I am absolutely delighted with the picture quality and the fact that auto focus is available at this price point, but I am also disappointed by the auto focus implementation and high CPU usage. I like the new widescreen format, but be aware that 16:9 isn't universally supported yet. Some software and websites still assume your webcam is the traditional 4:3 ratio and may distort the output. I'm glad that the HD-5000's firmware is updatable, so perhaps some improvements can be made down the road.

Great cam for simple skype use. The auto-focus feature is a nice touch and can be placed anywhere. i placed this cam on my monitor #3 and in lower light, still the cam works wonders.

They just happen to cut the description off just short of telling you it's for a notebook and not a desktop. It's tiny so be careful.Pretty crappy cuz it's obviously done intentionaly! Good product but a full size would have better quality

I bought this and tought that I would really get a good quality videofeed webcam. It has couple problems, and those problems are HUGE. it is constantly focusing, the autofocus can be shut off but still...Then the other problem is also related to the focus. My face is blurred all the time and it is not sharp. when it has focused it is still very blurry face image. Background instead is crystal sharp and no matter what happens, the background comes sharp all the time, but the face is messed up.

The Auto-Focus (which can be turned off)is a beast with a mind all its own, trying to focus when there is no extra focusing necessary creating horrible blurs. Once the AutoFocus is turned off, manually adjust the focus and its okay. The sound from its built in mic is okay but prefer using my own soundblaster mic for recording with - its a continual battle to keep my Soundblaster as the primary soundcard. Calls to Microsoft Support almost ruined my computer when I foolishly handed remote control of my computer over to the tech (who apparently barely understood or spoke english). I had to fix the damage she caused AND work out the sound issues myself. IF YOU LIKE THE SOUND FROM THE LIFECAM MIC - Then This should not be an issue. I sing online Karaoke and have to have my own sound card & sound Fx working. If not for that - the low price is great. Like I said - turn off the AutoFocus. You'll be glad you did.

The Microsoft LifeCam HD-5000 is a tiny priced item that delivers high priced quality. My computer Guy suggested it to me and it was a great deal. 1-2-3 set-up, immediate satisfaction with sound and picture. For price and clarity, I 100 percent suggest this LifeCam. You won't be disappointed.

As I was looking around for a webcam here on Amazon, I looked not only for quality but for value. And when I saw this little webcam and after seeing a review left by Brian Baker, I quickly jumped on the deal.When it arrived, I was a bit surprised by the size of it. It was much smaller than I had anticipated, but much to my surprise, there's a lot that comes in that little camera. The picture is actually quite great, and the camera comes with some basic Microsoft software, with effects and such.The front side of the camera comes with a little blue lights so you can tell its being used or that it's on.Beware though, that unless your computer matches up to "recommended" system requirements, you'll probably just stay at the default widescreen SD resolution (640x360).

I bought this webcam for infrequent video interviews with possible applicants to a graduate degree program who live far out of state. We do video calls with applicants that cannot make a live interview. I own four other older Microsoft WebCams which my family uses for pictures and Skype calls, and this web cam works and looks better than all of our previous Microsoft Web Cams, which I thought worked very well already. This one is high definition and the picture quality shows it. Also, the built-in microphone is of very good quality. All in all, I could not be happier with the purchase. The installation into a Windows 7 Dell desk computer was a breeze. I cant imagine what anyone would criticize about this product.

I love this web cam except of course the resolution is so great that every wrinkle shows including the dust on the blinds across the room. It has some really fun feateares to that makes skping more enjoyable.
