I bought this camera to use while my husband is deployed. Not only is the picture terrific, but the in-line mike catches all the sounds in the house. Not only can he hear and see me, but he can hear our birds singing in the background, our nieces laughing, our teenage son leaving for work etc.. Great price and great quality, I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a webcam. It waas super easy to install as well.

I was very happy when I bought this webcam. It was easy to install and very user friendly. I didn't have a problem with the sound or video quality. However, after three days, my system (Windows Vista) would not recognize the camera. I uninstalled the software and re-installed it several times. It works when I do this, but when I restart my computer, it won't recognize the camera until I disconnect it and reconnect it to the USB port. I have spent countless hours on the phone with Microsoft tech support (in India) and they have yet to solve my problem. I've been told they've "escalated" the tech support request and that one of their managers would be calling me, but a month later, it's still not working. I wouldn't recommend purchasing this product. It's just not worth the time and aggravation.

...though with windows Vista (home premium) it took about 20 restarts to get it to work full and proper. Very frustrating.. but now it works.Happens to be Vista's problems with any USB device. For some odd reason.. Microsoft device, + Microsoft OS, + Microsoft software... don't like getting along for awhile. (software being MSN (windows live network))Still.. not that it works right, it does good.

Our family has a number of these web cameras so that we can better stay in touch with each other.Unfortunately, it this model has one critical flaw -- the microphone on all four of the units only works intermittently! This serious flaw causes the microphone to transmit static at full volume even if the room is so quiet that you could hear a pin drop (this is not cell phone induced noise either). We have been unable to find the cause or a solution (rebooting and many other attempts to fix the mic have not been helpful; nor has a replacement camera Amazon graciously provided).If you aren't worried about a mic which does not work more often than it does, then this camera has a lot of good things going for it. Installation is easy, the monitor mount is convenient, and the wide angle lens is wide enough to squeeze the family in from time to time. I have only tried it with Windows Live Messanger, but it works well with that application (modulo the mic issues).Overall, I do not recommend this camera simply because of the microphone issues which far too frequently occur on every one of the units I have experience with.

Running this on Vista.The actual design of the camera includes a prominent, non-programmable button inexeribly tied to Microsoft Live Messenger. Interestingly, installation of the program is also necessary to unlock access to audio and video settings menu option from the Life Cam software.The video quality is fair with some excessive flaring effect. But the biggest flaw was the inconsistently working mircophone. Even when it was picking up, sensitivity and quality were amazingly poor. Feedback, no matter what the placement of the camera vs. the speakers was very noticeable.I would not recommend this "top of the line" product.

I found this product suffers from horrible interference with the mic. Your video partner will hear a low, growling feedback noise and barely able to make out what you are saying. Whacking it hard against the knee solves the problem, but handling it again may set it off again. There are many reports of this problem, with complicated fixes which involve cracking the unit open and snipping some wires.The large button on top opens MSN Live Messenger. This is NOT programmable. It is almost impossible to adjust the camera without accidentally hitting the button, and when I'm using Skype I sure don't want MSN popping up in the foreground. A workaround for this involves renaming the file "C:\Program Files\Microsoft LifeCam\IcePick.exe" to something else.Sometimes the green "activity" light stays on after calls have been terminated, making me quite paranoid that someone is looking at me through a trojan on my computer.

Pro's:Setting up this camera was simple and quick. I was in a web cam session in 10 minutes.It has all the physical adjustments you need so you are always able to get the camera at the right angles so you can be looking your best. You can tilt it in any direction, and it's adjustable clamp will have the camera fit securely to just about any monitor.Another good feature is the manual zoom. Some people prefer automatic zoom (like some people prefer automatic transmission in their car), but for a webcam, when you are usually shooting only one subject at a time, manual zoom is the better option because it gives you total control and allows you to have a sharp and perfectly focused image of your subject, wether it be in the background or way up close, so you never have to worry about getting blurry shots again.Since this is a microsoft device it is compatible with many programs. Aside from the included software I also used it in ms movie maker, and picasa, and i'm sure there are many other programs that can utilize it that I havent used.And as you know, if you use ms messenger, the special button on the camera will get your video conference going in a snap. You also have integrated animation effects that people with different brand cameras dont get in ms messenger.The built in microphone is also great for people who dont have a standalone headset, this will save you money. You can also use the camera's mic just for recording audio and using in voip programs like Skype if you so choose.Cons:The picture quality drops in low lighting conditions, but this is a weakness that almost all digital cameras have.Also, the "automatic face tracking software" feature is not perfected. Lets say you move back a few feet, the camera is supposed to zoom in and keep your face centered and at a certain size at all times. Well sometimes it zooms in too close, or doesnt zoom in when you move back. But it's a new technology and I didnt expect this feature to be perfected, not many will need this feature since most people are relatively still when sitting in front of their computer.All in all, it is a good camera for the money, with a handful of features and it serves it's purpose well.Tip:Keep in mind that if you intend to record top quality videos (high resolution and framerates) you will need a PC with good hardware (atleast a 2mhz CPU, 128mb video card, 512mb ram). For people with older PC's, the camera's settings can be adjusted to work better for you. The camera will provide the maximum picture quality it advertises as long as it has the proper computer hardware to power it. And as most of you know, broadband internet is pretty much a necessity for webcam sessions.Check it out!

I paid $50 for this camera but it is probably worth $10. The Windows software is slow and "heavy" and the CCD is very noisy, equivalent to the low end models in the market. Stay away from this camera and go for a Logitech model (which I use at work and is very crisp and clean). Also, stay away from this if you use Linux (nobody would expect otherwise, I believe) - it doesn't work at all.

Couldn't get this to work properly on Ubuntu 8.04. Also got the QuickCam Connect which didn't work either. Finally got the QuickCam Messenger which worked including the microphone out of the box.

The instructions were very straight forward. Comming from a computer illiterate very easy to set up and use. I have been using this camera to talk to family overseas for about a month and no problems. Highly recommend it.

Great picture quality and audio quality. Sometimes when using Skype the video is delayed but the audio is not, which makes it a little weird. I'm not sure if that is the webcam or my computer though. The clip on the back is perfect to hang it on my monitor and easy to adjust left-to-right. Good product!

I ordered the LifeCam on May 26, 2008. It arrived, and was easy to install. It worked like a charm. Then suddenly, it just stopped working. The camera produces an image of a pink box. I looked through all of the troubleshooting info, changed USB ports, uninstalled and re-installed and nothing. I downloaded a newer version of the software from MS. Nada. I will try to see if I can return this camera...

I was given my VX6000 as a gift since my existing cam would not function with Vista. My daughter who lives out of state communicates with me often, and was having difficulty with her cam. I ordered and had same cam delivered to her. She loves it. My wife has not had a cam on her PC and became interested in one for herself to communicate with my daughter, and our future daughter in law in the Philippine Islands. She now enjoys her own VX6000. Operation, image are quite good. We are all very pleased.Richard Stell

I like the fact that this camera has a built-in microphone; one less thing to connect to a USB port. The top button automatically starts Live Messenger. Movement capturing is not the smoothest I've seen, but considering size and price, it is acceptable. The sound is excellent. It attaches nicely on top of LCD monitors. I had this camera for a couple of months now and didn't have any problems.Update: The microphone stopped working, the video is still good.

I purchased this webcam because I am a long time user of Microsoft products, the price was right, and I liked the design. I use it for video chatting on Windows Live Messenger and it works great. As with any web cam you have to adjust room lighting for the best image quality - I use a desk lamp for additional light. The frame rate is slow, but what I expected for a web cam. I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Despite knowing in advance that this was a cheap webcam, it's much fuzzier than I expected it to be. It can be difficult for the facial expressions of the person using it to be made out. However, it does fit on my notebook computer very easily.

Good product for typical intended use. Great resolution, sharp image. Unfortunately, I wanted to use it for a time lapse of a constrution project. It won't focus beyond 10 m (or 30 feet).

Awesome camera, great clarity and resolution. Mic works really well. Only one issue is that there appears to be a small conflict with either my MS keyboard+mouse software or my Lenovo volume control....everytime i talk the volume bar flashes on the screen, doesnt change the volume, but it is really annoying.

I wasn't impressed with this Cam. The 1000 and 3000 are comparable in many aspects (according to there specs on the boxes). I chose the 1000 since it was 10 dollars less (29 bucks).It works fine on Yahoo, but the clarity sucks. Maybe it was just mine, but I had a Logitech 4000 and it was crystal clear. Perhaps the resolution is lower. For whatever the reason, I wasn't happy with it, and I returned it.

THE WEBCAM WAS VERY EASY TO SET-UP. I HAD A LITTLE PROBLEM WITH TRYING TO GET IT TO SET ON TOP OF THE MONITOR BUT HAVE WORKED THAT OUT.

Bought this camera as an "upgrade" for an older L***tech laptop web cam. What a waste of money! The picture on this thing is horrible! Even though the specs on this camera are much better, my older camera's video is waaay better. The video from this hunk-o-junk is very blurry and grainy. The sound seems to be okay, but I never really paid attention because the video was so bad. M$ makes decent keyboards and mice, but if this is the best web cam they can make, they need to get out of this market. I'll stick with L***tech.

I purchased a Microsoft LifeCam VX-6000 webcam because I wanted to avoid conflicts with the Windows operating system, and because Microsoft is at least as reputable as the rest of my operating system. (Also, IMHO, they did a heckuva good job on Excel, for all its little quirks, what with VBA macros and the solver.) This was evidently the top of the MS line, so I figured it was a good webcam.The first problem I had was the requirement for a system update, so I went to the the MS support site, and found a document on the patch telling me to install the latest service pack. Now I update my system every two months, and I was due, so I followed the instructions. A couple of hours later, while MS presumably scrutinized everything on my system (and found it legal, because it scrupulously is, because I believe it should be as a matter of principle) the next installation attempt produced exactly the same results. Found another document (there were scores), followed its instructions, and installation proceeded.I went along hitting the agree buttons until, in the installation of some sort of fancy toolbar, I came upon an option to read a privacy statement. On a whim, I did so. So glad I made that choice! Ever read Orwell's 1984? There's the Ministry of Truth, and the Ministry Peace. Now there's Microsoft's Privacy Statement. My God! You have to agree to resident spyware to use this thing! Bless you, Bill and Melinda for all your good works, but gimme a break! Noooooooooooo! You may NOT install that alien malevolence on my machine! I refused the statement, but installation of other stuff continued. (Hey! Sometime it works; sometimes it don', right?)Tried the thing. At first, it seemed to work passing well. It was jerky, but OK. Then I tried the video capture, which was the feature I had really wanted. Ya know, I sorta expected in this day and age with 3.2 (or 2.8 in my case) billion (note the B) instructions per second, that video would be synchronized with sound. Not even close. It didn't look like anyone had even attempted to do anything in this direction. Like "OK! Ship it!"So... How am I supposed to rate the LifeCam VX-6000? It's a piece of junk, isn't it? Note that this is my second day with it, and I could find a setting at any moment that clears this all up, in which case I will edit the content and change the rating. But... if this review is several weeks old, that didn't happen.

I have a thinkpad Z61M and a dell 30" LCD, both of which are too thick to accommodate this webcam's standard mounting clamp. Seriously, if I have to use velcro to use it on these items I imagine it probably doesn't clamp to much outside of a Macbook air. Sigh.

I was initially excited about this cam, but after installation, I quickly realized it was a bad investment. It is easy to install and set-up, but the constant static makes it unbearable to have a conversation what-so-ever. We actually have to put the camera as far away from the computer to reduce the noise, but even then, it is still readily apparent. And, since it is on the side, you have the camera shooting the side of you while you look at the computer. There is also a very loud echo. The video quality is also lacking for a camera of this price. I highly recommend looking elsewhere for a camera.

I paid for this web camera $37. Quality is good as soon as camera not more than 2 feet's from you. Other wise if you getting fuser from camera, quality falling. Be careful with microphone, it is very sensitive and picking all noses around. It you worried about how much you want to pay for camera it will be nice pick, but if you do not care of price than find something better.

I have bought many things in amazon, and this one is the first time that something does not work correctly.I tested the camera in 3 different computers and the result is the same .... only noise when I use the microphone of the camera.I return to my old USB camera.BAD, BAD CHOICE.

My family and I just relocated 3 states away from our extended family and wanted to get a good webcam to keep in touch with everyone and let our 2 year old see his grandmother once and a while. When I saw the Microsoft LifeCam at Target stores and that it was compatible with Windows Live I thought it would be worth the $100 price tag to be able to keep in touch with family.I purchased the software and started the installation process on my computer. Just so you know, my system is running a Pentium 4 processor and has 8 active USB 2.0 connections, only 3 of which are being used for the keyboard, mouse, and this webcam, along with 512MB of RAM which is more than necessary for this product to function.The software took about 10 minutes to install which I thought was a little odd, then it asks for you to plug in the camera. My XP system recognized the camera but told me that the hardware had encountered an error during installation and may not function properly. I uninstalled the software and tried the installation again with the same result. I then tried a different USB port just in case there was a problem. Following a stepwise process I checked and updated all drivers for the USB hub, ports, etc. and I checked under the system manager tools to ensure that all were working properly. I then went to the Microsoft website and downloaded the updates for the software (this took another 15 minutes and the site crashed twice).By now I was getting very frustrated but hoped that the software update would allow appropriate connectivity with the camera. I went into the software and found that it was recognizing the mic, but it said that there was no camera attached. I again tried to find the camera through other means with no results.For the price paid and the 3+ hours I spent trying to install the hardware I can say with all assurity that this product is not worth it. I will be returning it to Target for a full refund and will look into investing my money with another brand.As someone else said earlier in the reviews, "does Microsoft ever send their products through Quality Assurance before they release them?"

We bought one for ourselves and one for my parents who live out of state so they can see their grandkids. Ours installed fine, but my parents are still having difficulties. For some reason Internet Explorer doesn't want to work on their Windows based computer. They have been using Firefox because of the problem. This wouldn't be a problem, but the Lifecam is a Microsoft product and requires Explorer. Here we are a month after Christmas and we still haven't been able to use it so I can't give any more of a review.

Its a nice web cam, but its just a web cam.Face tracking doesnt work on highest resolution. The best luck i everhad with a web cam was to use a video card with capture (ATI) and my handy cam. Nothing still touches that.

Ok i already own the VX-1000 and loved it so i decided to get a new one and i knew it would have to be a lifecam so i bought the VX-6000 and what a difference, i have a wider span and a higher quality picture, if you are willing to spend the money this cam is well worth it!!

I splurged and got myself a fancy new camera to replace my old Logitech and should have known better than to buy Microsoft. I've spent about an hour trying to get it working but I can't get any video - mic works fine and the camera thinks it's working, but all I get is a black screen. Returning it to get a Logitech or Creative. I'm running XP Pro on an HP with an AMD 3500+ proc.

Hi,This is first time I am writing review on internet in my life. My suggesstion is please dont weaste your money and time for this product. I bought this webcam couple of days ago. It looks very attarctive and its features seems very good but when I install all the required softwares and start webcam it gives me "Initilization error". Then I searched Microsoft website and I found that thousands of customer facing this problem and the solution which I saw on Microsoft site is not working at all.Then I called microsoft product support team. They spent 2 hours to fix this error. They took the control of my laptop through netmeeting and tried all the different settings but same error comes.Finally support team advised me to send back this product to Microsoft and they will give your money back.So overall its just weasting your time and money in courier...PLEASE DON'T BUY....ThanksRits

I have tried this camera on three different computers. All of them have 1 GB RAM or more, have at least a 2 GHz processor, and are running Windows XP Professional w/ the latest updates. Motion on the camera is incredibly slow and blurry. I have tried multiple screen resolution settings, and I found that the camera is basically unusable at 1024x768. You have to set your screen resolution to 600x800 in order to get it work, but the camera video is very slow and blurry. I have tried various camera settings, and I have had no luck with those changes. I was hoping I was doing something wrong, as everyone else seems to think this is one of the best cameras on the market, but alas, the camera is not performing well for me.

I hooked it up and it works fine. But it only seems to work with Windows Messenger, and I primarily use yahoo. It's probably a case of me not reading all the fine print before I purchased it, but shouldn't all webcams work with whatever program accesses it? It doesn't make sense that it only works with WM.The positive notes are it's very small and sits nicely on my flatscreen monitor. I just wish it would work in the way I want it to. I mean, my HP printer doesn't require I use all HP software to use it. I can hit print in any application and it will work. Why doesn't this work the same way?

I purchased this since it was Vista Certified. Immediately I had to download a new version of software (177 MBs) since there were "known compatibility issues with Vista". This is a Microsoft product running (or wanting to run) on a Microsoft operating system. Install hung up trying to install version 1.3 and I haven't been able to reinstall (need to uninstall before re-installing although it never installed and doesn't show up in the Control Panel add or remove program list ... since it never completed the install process.) This is going to be a huge waste of time to get this either on or off my computer. Why or why did I think a Microsoft product would work on a Microsoft operating system and the fact that the box said it worked with Vista meant anything at all.

This web cam works great on my HP ZD8230 laptop with 17 inch screen. I have had no problems at all with it. I has awesome resolution and is very compact. I have had no hardware or software issues with this product.

This web cam works great. It is easy to use and works well. It is also one of the clearest web cams that i have seen, the video is very fluid. I have used 4 webcams before this one and i have to say this one by far is my favorite.

This webcam has an excellent quality picture, it's easy to use. The only thing that you should do, is to download the new driver and software from microsoft's site because the driver that came with it crashes the Windows XP system. Download the new driver and install it before installing the webcam itself.

I bought the Lifecam 6000 and my girlfriend bought the NX6000 for her notebook. When we're both in town they work ok, the sound is always a little garbled and the picture quality is so-so. She recently traveled to a major southwest city and our communication became very poor - jerky video and bad sound. Truly unusable. She checked her internet connection speed and that was ok, so maybe it's the lifecams. Microsoft seems to not support them as well as other products. They seem to treat them as toys for the home as opposed to serious business use, which we expected them to be. They actually have a different advertising agency handling their lifecams from their other business products, which has been very unresponsive on questions I had when I wrote a review of them.Another gripe I have is that I had sent in the boxtop and my Amazon receipt for the Rebate to a 3rd party company that's handling the rebates, and they sent me a letter denying my rebate because I hadn't sent in the boxtop - which I did. Maybe Microsoft is losing too much money on Vista to pay their rebates.
