Have run this camera through a few tests after reading complaints that it defaults back to factory settings once camera adjustments are made. I previouly tested the Logitech C270 HD web cam and returned it back to Walmart (The 270 specs out as the C260 3Mb cam version, but made for Walmart with an added mic headset in the package for around $35.) May have been an update to the HD-6000 software since those earlier reviews were written as I closed out the program and fired it back up to find my image settings did not revert back to defaults, but held as I set them.Autofocus: Good feature concept but HD-6000 is too slow and searches too long for focus. Once it has you, it is clear, but if you suddenly sit back in your chair a foot, the camers does a 2 second search to re-focus. I turned feature off auto focus and the depth of field in normal indoor light still provided good range of in-focus image for typical sitting-at-desk video call.Color controls: White Balance defaults was OK from my experience, but much is based on the light source. Flouresent lights cause challenges for many auto white balance settings. The Logitech C270 looked better for image color out of the box. I found the color saturation accurate enough at default, but image seems to accentuate subtle skin tone differences, and is not remedied with the contrast adjustment and Hue was not adjustable, which is likely the culprit. Microsoft... you listening? We need full control of the image quality.Image Resolution Controls: Key feature compared to many HD cams (especially compared to Logitech C270 and I understand many of their other HDs which have no adjustment in the sw) is the ability to adjust the image resolution. Unless you have reliable high bandwidth (well over 1 Mb both ways) you will get no image on one or the other end of the call if on Skype. I'm on the road and often using mobile aircard connections with 256K or below. I was able to adjust the resolution to get the HD-6000 camera to work adequately in lower bandwidth situations... many resolutions to choose from with MS software. That is a big advantage to this camera and software. Now it can meet almost all video chat needs and serve as an HD widescreen camera for quick digital home movies. Note: Yahoo video calls seemed to auto adjust image quality and frame rate to try and compensate for lower bandwidth connections. This camera worked with Yahoo better in a poor bandwidth scenario than with Skype. Logitech C270 hard set 720 HD mode meant only one side of the video call would work at a time. I did not try the Logitech on Yahoo.Have determined to keep this HD-6000 as I like the control options and it mounts very securely to my Laptop... again, unlike the Logitech HD C270 C260 which is a bit too loose with no spring tension. 4 Star instead of 5 is because it should have better image rendering color and white balance out of the box, and even better with the controls. Logitech wins for image quality, but I rate the Logitech C270 and C260 3 stars because no software image resolution control reflects a very, very limited view of the consumer needs.

Reality is, now a days anything with a chip in it cost a great deal of money. However the price of two foot long subs, we have a little block that does exactly what it's suppose to do. The minute I plugged it in to my apple computer, mac os x picked it up and let me use it with any application (i.e facetime, skype). The only downside, which is a limitation of the operating system more than the device is the ability control the camera (i.e contrast, brightness). However all and all, it works. I setup a box with a hole in front of my desk at the office, poped this bad boy in and va la, instant spy cam.The trick to hiding a box with a hole in it, is to stack a couple boxes with random holes. People don't question it, they just think the boxes got dropped.One more thing to note, if you want a view of the camera at all times on your mac. Look for an app in the app store called P2P. It's intended for presenters to share whats on camera but it works great for my needs.

I wouldn't even bother with this one. Silly me, read reviews and thought I'd be the exception. After all, how could they sell a webcam who's auto-focus doesn't work ? Well, this webcam is it - the auto-focus will blur and re-focus consantly, even when you have not moved an inch nor has the lighting changed. I suppose you could get by with it if all you used it for was personal chat and it doesn't bug the person on the other end. Someone suggested turning off the auto-focus. The only problem with that is from a focus view, the minute you turn off auto-focus, the picture blurs. Set-up easy, microphone works well, could use a clip device (just lays on top of my flat screen basically), is pretty resource intensive, but with constant blur, unacceptable for me, unprofessional if using for business, and forget it if you are using to create recorded video. I tried to tweak settings, but didn't improve. I'm sending it back. If anyone tweaks settings successfully for this problem, could you post your fix, in detail, here ? Don't be like me and skip over ALL the comments others post here about the auto-focus. They should call it auto-blur feature. Wide angle is good, colors are good when it focuses. I see no way to manually adjust the actual focus once you've taken it off auto-focus, oherwise, I could probably make this webcam do - since I don't move around on chats that much. Cam is very tiny and unobtrusive - about the size of a silver dollar on lens part that peeks over monitor.1/12/2012 - later I was able to turn off the AutoFocus and the webcam stayed in focus. No idea why it wouldn't stay in focus earlier. Still, if AutoFocus is turned on, it goes haywire and blurs and re-focuses over and over, with no movement or lighting change at all. I continued to have Skype conflicts with this webcam (Skype would ABEND) - so, I returned it.

The product arrived in a timely manner and beyond getting it out of the plastic box the setup was painless. Plugged in with the USB and Windows automatically installed my drivers allowing me to use it with skype in the time it took me to make a cup of tea. Haven't had any issues with not being heard, video problems or it falling off of the top of my monitor. I'm especially pleased that it comes WITH A BUILT IN MICROPHONE so that you can use it for VOIP or chatting. Great product

Typical Microsoft product. I give the hardware a 5. The software by Microsoft or it's OEM, a 0. Really, Microsoft? I have to close programs on my desktop to run your stupid application for a vidcam? I have to use a work around in my Chrome Blogger to insert pictures? You never did write software that was worth anything. And quit stalking me on the internet. You can't fix my stuff. Microsoft, you suck. 2 1/2 stars

This is a great product, and I fully enjoy it and it is used exactly how it said it would be and it works perfectly.Pros:- Good visual- Small- Works with all computersCons:- The way it hooks on is kind of awkward- The software is slow and buggyOverall great.

I bought this for my grandparents because they live far away and would be nice to see them when we talk. This works perfect. It isn't the best quality but I can see them good enough and you can't beat it for 20 bucks. I think it might also have something to do with the speed of their connection...but we are able to see and hear each other perfectly. We're very pleased with it.

The LifeCam HD-5000 is quite a decent webcam. For $30, I'd have to say it a great purchase. The picture is good with a good variability of resolutions. The microphone is great (seems to have decent noise cancellation in place). Great choice for Skype. Note that this is not a Skype HD rated webcam as the 720p video is encoded on the machine, not in the camera hardware itself. As of this moment, there are very few Skype HD rated webcams out there, so I don't expecting great 720p performance on every machine from this webcam.The following two paragraphs are relevant to Windows machines only:With regard to auto-focus, I would like to point out that contrary to some other reviews, the auto-focus can be disabled in the webcam settings without disabling TrueColor, which adjusts for brightness, hue, and saturation (as well as other aspects of the image). Overall, auto-focus is great to have, it works very well in certain setups, and very poorly in others. I do like being able to hold up text to the camera and have it focus on the image. If you have problems with the auto-focus, simply turn it off in the (advanced) webcam settings (which can be accessed in the control panel, in Skype, or through the LifeCam software).Here are some points on the LifeCam software. First, I would like to point out that you do not need to install it. Without the LifeCam software, the camera works great with the drivers Windows (7) chooses to install for it. There are, however, some differences. The LifeCam software is what provides TrueColor, which does make for a better video when chatting online. The LifeCam software also auto-adjusts the frame rate for your machine depending on the resolution, this makes for smoother video for online chatting. Auto-adjustment of the frame rate can be an issue if you want to shoot 720p at 30fps on a machine that the software considers weak. Many people will need to uninstall the LifeCam software and use MJPG compression to achieve 30fps at 720p on this webcam. Also, without the LifeCam software, many more of the webcam settings become available to the system, but TrueColor will be gone. In my experience, it is best to let the LifeCam software run if your main purpose is to use Skype or other video chat clients.Comments on using the LifeCam HD-5000 with Mac OS X:This webcam is (at least partially) UVC compliant, so it will work on Mac OS X (and Linux). Most webcams sold these days are UVC compliant, so this is not something particular to the LifeCam HD-5000. The microphone also work well. However, for those of you with Mac OS X, it very likely that an iSight (which most Macs have anyway) will work much better. With UVC drivers on Mac OS X, the video can be choppy and is at a fixed resolution of (what looks like) 640x480. No 720p for Mac OS X users. Auto-focus and image correction features are, of course, also not available on Mac OS X.Overall, the product is great to have. I appreciate the design, as it is both table and laptop compatible. For those of you eying a LifeCam HD-5001 or LifeCam HD-6000, know that the optics are the same, so the video quality should be identical.

Well this camera sure seemed like a good deal. A Microsoft product with a built-in Mic.Turns out it doesn't work properly with Skype. I sent it to my friend so we could Skype. She is using Windows Vista SP2.The problem with the camera is that when we Skype the image is constantly breaking/flickering. This flickering problem is well documented, but you'd have to look for it.I might be able to fix it if I wasn't thousands of miles away, but I was hoping that this Microsoft plug-and-play product would work fine with a Microsoft Windows operating system.At least I didn't waste a lot of money. Just funny that my 10 year old spare no-name Webcam works better than this one.*UPDATE 9/4/12*I figured out that this problem has to do with older AMD chipsets and USB ports.If you have this problem with this camera, it can be fixed by either trying different USB ports until you find one that works correctly or by installing a separate USB card into your computer.Best of luck.

I am using this camera for 2 years, every week on skype and I use the build in microphone when playing games online. It still works even though my toddler was messin with it multiple times, it landed on floors, cable got messed up - still works.Also the microphone seems to be of good quality, can whisper even when 2 feet away from it. Nothing high tec but I like it!

Use this to chat on skype and on other messengers. Works well. One problem is that it is difficult to mount it in the screen. There is not clips or anything just a small ledge kind of thing to support it. As such you wont be able to turn it at any angle and will only face straight ahead. Came with a CD and can create funny images by turning you into a bunny and that sort of thing. worked well as it was able to recognize my face and follow it as I moved around.

Just two things,Nothing to really clip on to anything, and the angle from sitting on your desk is quite strange for others.Quality of the video is good and performs reasonably in dark settings.

We use it for skyping - works perfectly in this role. This is not a precision German optical instrument. it is a practical small camera that installs in one mintue and does the job. The MS brand ensures easy compatability with the rest of your software and MS operating systems.

I'v ehad this one for some time and haven't had any problems with it. I've just used it on my desk top and not attached it to the monitor. The cord is 6ft long. Although it has one little problem that might need to be looked at if you are considering this. The little base for it is just that, little and it seems that when or if you need to adjust it (the camera head) it takes two hands. Which is nice in its own way, meaning that its not easily turned or won't slip from where you put it, the head that is. Overall I gave a 4 stars, because its not perfect. But just right for me

everything its good... once you dicover how to take out the auto focus.INSTRUCTIONS>-go to settings-unlock the "true color" box-go to advanced settings-go to camera-unlock "auto" focusThan you can focus manually by the cursor.

It seems to work fine so far. Right now it's just, flopped over the top of the computer monitor. The little stand that comes with doesn't really fit all that well, but it's not that bad. Actually, it's probably better than some sort of system that would try to attach to the monitor.

no instructions and even worse no software only a camera with a tag showing a drawing of a cd going into a computer and the words " install software first" writen in about 20 languages. but no software or instuctions, nothing else.

this camera is great. yeah, there's a lot of moaning about the auto-focus feature on the web but I will tell you it's infounded. The auto-focus feature is quick to adjust and right itself. no complaints here

Bought this camera with some birthday money and for the first few months, it worked great. Then the sound started going out of sync (possibly after a driver update)? My system is Window 7 Home Premium, 6 gigs of RAM, 2.7 Ghz processor. I tried everything at MS's web site to fix it (even shooting at lower resolutions negating the main reason for buying it), even going so far as to reformat my entire system but 2 out of 3 videos still go out of sync after a few seconds. Of course, this isn't made apparent until after the recording is finished, so if you are using the videos for any kind of family recording or blogging, you may become as frustrated as I have been.I will not buy another Microsoft hardware product (not so much because of the bad camera function but because they have been no help and in my opinion, ignoring the problem). Next thing you know, they'll be calling "out of sync" a feature.I just wish I had my money back.

I bought this camera because the store I was in did not have the one I wanted and I figured I would give it a try. I returned it the next day. The biggest problem was that it would not stay in focus! It kept searching for focus and would not find it and would not stop. If I turned off the auto focus I could manually focus it from the software, but that would not work for the kind of video blog I wanted to record. If a camera cannot focus it is worthless. Period. I would not recommend this camera to anyone for anything.

Well, I felt comfortable ordering the Microsoft LifeCam HD-5000 720p HD Webcam - Black after reading Amazon reviews and several other web site reviews. But I have to say I never really got to see how good this Camera was, I could never get it to work. I installed, uninstalled and re-installed the software at least three times; never received an error with the drivers/software install. I loaded software and drivers from Microsoft's web site and straight off the disk. I worked on this for almost four hours because I just wasn't going to let this camera get the best of me. I am no noob and I figured I must be doing something simple incorrectly. I updated my graphics card drivers, made sure there was no other web cam software installed; and it was all to no avial. No matter what I did when the LifeCam software would launch I would received a "LifeCam.exe has stopped working" ... and the software would close. Microsoft's support online is terrible; I read one entry that said uninstall SP3. Really, I'm going to uninstall SP3 for a web camera. I boxed this POS up the next day and sent it back to Amazon.My system is running Windows XP Media Center Edition SP3, has 2 GB of RAM and a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz dual core processer.I did a little more research and decided on the Logitech HD Webcam C525, Portable HD 720p Video Calling with Autofocus. It was a little more money but all the reviews were great. I have purchased several different Logitech devices over the years and installation has always been a breeze. Well, the Webcam C525 was no different. It almost took longer to get it out of the box then it did to install it; well maybe. :) Installation took 20 minutes tops and then my daughter and I were making videos. After another 10 or 15 min to install Skype I was video chatting with a buddy.Don't waste your time with the LifeCam HD-5000!

This Webcam has great cam hide style that's why I bought that cam and it's Microsoft that's the reason too but I'm very disappointed with this cam because this cam doesn't compatible with SKYPE, FACEBOOK, YAHOO MESSENGER....!This cam is supports Google Plus and Nimbuzz Only....! Camera has great 2MP picture quality but It's not supports all Social Media that's why I'm so Disappointed...!Don't Buy this if you want to run on skype or facebook or yahoo messenger......! This is for Only Google and Nimbuzz.

This camera was shipped in excellent condition and it was like new. I downloaded the installation from the web because the installation disk was not included. It works just fine.

I expected a better product even for the price and its not bad,but there was no software and there is a tag saying load software. Plus it came in a brown small box, not like the one for the product. I expected more and got a pop not a bang. Other then that is nice. I would of given more stars if it had what it said it has like a program disk and then I wouldn't have to go to microsoft to get it.

I bought this webcam to skype with my family, now that I have just moved to a new place. My parents love the audio and video quality of this webcam, and my dad even wants me to order one for him (he doesn't have an Amazon account). I think the picture quality and the ability to capture motion is pretty decent for this camera, although I'm sure there are better ones. Nevertheless, the bang-per-buck for this webcam I think is great, which is what most casual users like myself are looking. The special effects for this webcam is kind of cool at first, but they get old fairly quickly. This, however, is not a concern at all for me.This webcam is plug and play, but I noticed that the picture sometimes lag and shake when I use it the first time. After searching and installing its newest driver, the webcam works flawlessly.

I followed instructions, downloaded and installed software, plugged in the webcam when indicated. The software crashed. I uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled. Same thing.I requested a replacement. The same thing happened with the new webcam. Tried installing an older version of the software. That didn't work either.Microsoft, I'm ashamed of you! I've requested a refund.

I had been using one of those eyeball cams and just was very unhappy with the picture quality. From the very first moment I plugged the LifeCam into my computer, I have been extremely happy with its performance! Great cam for a very reasonable cost!

I've had this product for 3 days now I don't usually leave reviews but this product works so well I had to recommend it to anyone looking for a web cam it takes great pictures I use it on skype I love it ...it very easy to set up not confusing to use at all ..this product exceeded my expectations...
