This unit's wi-fi range is somewhat limited. It drops on and off unless you are fairly close to it. Do they sell a electronic piece that extends the range?

I worked with 'expert' technicians for a couple days, when I finally got a knowledgeable person to tell me there is a known bug with external drives on this router. Some drives are not recognized, while others, Seagate included, are recognized, but you can not map the drive from your PCs.Although this is one of the most powerful wireless routers I have ever used, the buggy firmware and unusable external drive made me return my unit...FYI there is a newer unit coming very soon, the AE4500. You can see it in the Linksys support page on the Linksys.com site. Same functionality as E4200 v.2.Linksys/Cisco appear to be dropping the price of the E4200v.2 unit on their Cisco shopping site, below Amazon's price, obviously in preparation for the new 'AE' series. Firmware updates are supposed to happen in a couple weeks for AE4500 to fix external drive issues. (a friend of mine found on in a retail outlet and is using it now without the external drive)Don't buy this one. Wait for new model/fixes.

I used this device to connect my Yamaha player piano to the internet to stream music. It was very easy to set up and configure. I have not had any issues with dropped internet nor have I had to worry about it since its original set up. The only thing I didn't plan for (but was not a problem) is this device does require AC access, so make sure you plan on running one cord.

UPDATEUpdate: 12/24/2009: Received and installed LinkSys Powerline AV Network Kit (PLK300) which carries information on a carrier frequency riding on the 120VAC house wiring within the home (home side of circuitry after main breaker to electric company supply). Setup was straightforward and took less than an hour. Kit has two units: #1 is connected by Ethernet cable to router (WRT610N) and to a 120VAC outlet; #2 is connected to the HDTV and BluRay player via two Ethernet cables as well as a nearby 120VAC outlet. The second unit has slots for four (total) separate Ethernet connections of which we only used two.Result: 100% SUCCESS! Can stream BluRay movies, music, NetFlix, net news, gadgets, etc.Notes on further discussions with technical support: The `distance" figures quoted for the router and bridge are "open air" distances and will be degraded by passage through walls (interior or exterior). Further degradation may result if the signal must pass through "metal" window screens and/or through stucco walls (stucco is normally applied over a metal grid). Since our home is laid out where the signal will pass through two stucco walls in going from the "den" wing to the LR entertainment center, this may have been the cause of the very poor reception reported earlier. As a result, I am raising the rating to four stars (would rate higher if the above information had been available on the LinkSys web site). -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------LinkSys WRT610N Router and WET610N Bridge: We recently purchased a Sony Bravia HDTV and BluRay Player (52Z5100 and N460) each of which has the ability to accept video streaming and "gadgets". After reading various wireless reviews AND the Sony recommendation for the WET610 Bridge, we purchased these two units. They were to be used to connect between the cable modem (den) and LR entertainment center, a distance of ~60' through several interior sheetrock walls in a single story residence (with construction which does not practically allow Ethernet cable connection). The end result is disappointing! 5GHz transmissions from the router to the bridge are registered at a 97% signal level at ~ 3 ft. from the router; ~50% at ~25' from the router and not measurable at the TV location. At 2.4GHZ the signal level at the TV registered ~ 10-18% and gave a satisfactory path to set up "gadgets" and to upgrade both the HDTV and BluRay firmware. However, streaming of videos, music, etc. failed due to insufficient bandwidth.I tried several different software setups on the router and bridge to no avail (and even tried different locations of the bridge on a 25' Ethernet cable). I then contacted LinkSys support and paid for their diagnosis and support (which involved resetting both router and bridge). There was no significant improvement.Current status: I am awaiting delivery of newly-ordered LinkSys PLK300 PowerLine AV Ethernet Adapter Kit (uses internal home 120VAC wiring for "carrier transmission" of the signal; hardwire connection to router). Hope this works.Pros: For someone relatively familiar with computers, the LinkSys CD's provided a quick and easy setup and connection using Windows 7 (Home Premium - 32 bit). Although "Advanced Settings" for both the router and bridge are available, there is no instruction as to their probable effect and I did not use them (but LinkSys support did). Also, the router and bridge are relatively attractive / not geeky.Cons: At this point, the intended use of these two devices over this distance and in this environment is a failure. Although the failure could be due to either the router (transmitter) or the bridge (receiver) - or both, as a user I have no practical way of measuring.I will try to update this after receiving and installing the PowerLine Adapter See above.

Sometimes it works, and when it does, it works well, but this product has been a near constant source of grief since the day I purchased it. At some point the bridge will simply lose the connection, never to re-establish it again, unplugging it doesn't work, restarting it doesn't work, every time I have to re install the unit just like the first day I bought it. The worst part about this is that when the connection failure occurs I can NEVER regain my 5GHz connection(using the initial setup procedure) again without completely resetting my wireless router, and starting from scratch. Every other piece of hardware in the house can still connect to the 5GHz band with the exception of this awful piece of equipment. I have had problems with the bridge with two different routers now. I would stay away.

No other buffering occurred with any other programs.I don't replace components in my home theater unless they break. If this lasts as long as the other components I'll be a happy customer.

Setting up the router is about as easy as it gets. I could explain it here, but it's really not much more than plugging it in and running the setup program on the included CD. You get a random network name, and have both secured and unsecured wireless capabilities that it separates out into different VLANs. One note about the random network name, if you reset the router, you will get a new network name. I found that out the hard way, when I had to reset it when troubleshooting a wireless network issue (which may not have had anything to do with the router, itself).I gave it a 5 star rating for range, but in truth, I'm not sure what the total range is. I do know that I lose a bar (in my Dell laptop, using the built-in wireless... as well as my wife's iTouch) when I go upstairs (router is set up in the basement). I get a good signal throughout the house, and on the back patio. For me, the range is plenty good, and the speed is plenty fast for browsing the Internet and sending e-mail. I haven't tried networking games via the wireless yet, nor have I tried streaming high-def content to my blu-ray player or Xbox 360. Still need adapters to get those up and running on the network. The gigabit backplane is nice, as well, since I plan on purchasing a NAS for my home office that I'll be backing up to. 100mb speed is just too slow for backups of large amounts of data.Advanced settings are easy to get to and set. To play with these, you'll want to at least have a clue about basic networking before diving in. I've looked at it, but haven't yet had a need to customize any settings. I'm sure that will change, but the basic installation through the gui will do the trick for most users. All in all, I'm pleased with the router. I really like the dual band capability and what that brings to the table. I love having a guest network. Note that this network is password protected, and you need to select it then open a browser on your laptop which redirects to a page that allows you to put in the password to your guest network... only then are you able to use this network. This was a gotcha for me early on, probably because I didn't read the manual. ;) The guest network is separated from your secured network. The wireless seems pretty dependable, overall. I have experienced few drop-outs, though some drop-outs seem to be the rule, rather than the exception when it comes to wireless connectivity, and to be honest, I'm not certain that the drop-out is on the router side, either. This will become more obvious one way or the other as I "plug in" more wireless devices into the network. You can get a less expensive router, but most don't have dual bands that run concurrently. Many don't have a guest network built into it. And many aren't nearly as easy to set up. While more and more newer models include a gigabit backplane, if you go for a cheaper model, you're not likely going to get this, either. I guess it all depends on your budget and needs. For my future wireless plans, this was a good purchase, and worth the extra money.

I would say the E4200 router provides a solid connection, roughly the same throughput performance as the NETGEAR N750 450 Mbps Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router WNDR4000 (another 450 Mbps router), easy setup with `Cisco Connect', and the lack of LED lights in the front of the router really helps with the light pollution on the office desk.Pros:* Supports 3 data stream (450 Mbps) on the 5 GHz band. The tested throughput on the 5 GHz band was 129 Mbps up and 148 Mbps down (laptop with Intel 6300 wifi card to a server with a wired connection). About 15% faster then my old WNDR3700 router, but I was hoping for a 50% increase (300 Mbps -> 450 Mbps).* Easy to setup with the `Cisco Connect' application. The application guides you in setting up the wireless security, parental control, and guest network.* No issues connecting to the router with my PS3, Windows Home Server, Vulkano, and iPadCon:* Only 2 data stream (300 Mbps) on the 2.4 GHz band. The tested throughput on the 2.4 GHz band was 60 Mbps up and 70 Mbps down* No extra features like WDS repeating/bridge* WNDR4000 has better parental control featuresSummary:Having the E4200 and WNDR4000, the E4200 has roughly the same throughput performance as the WNDR4000 (134 Mbps up and 140 Mbps down on the 5 GHz band). The difference between the two comes down to features. The E4200 has a great setup utility that will allow any newbie to configure the router with ease. The WNDR4000 provides more useful features such as WDS repeating and traffic meter. As for the range of the router, I really can't comment on it due to living in a small apartment. Some extra background info:One thing that I feel is missing in the `router comparison table' is the processor speed. The CPU speed gives you an idea about the performance of the router. So here is what I found on the internet.E1200 - 300 MHz CPU with 32MB RAM and 4MB FlashE1500 - 300 MHz CPU with 32MB RAM and 8MB FlashE2500 - 300 MHz CPU with 64MB RAM and 8MB FlashE3000 - 480 MHz CPU with 64MB RAM and 8MB FlashE4200 - 480 MHz CPU with 64MB RAM and 16MB Flash

Equipment: DirecTV Plus HD DVR, Linksys E4200 router, WET610N adapterInstructions for setting up the adpater from users, DirecTV, and Linksys are varied. DirecTV instructions say not to use the setup CD. I followed that course of action and made the connection rather quickly by using the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (where you push the icons on router and adapter with the two arrows). But I had already setup my Linksys E4200 router with a new name and SSID security code. Well, the setup worked and was very quick to do. I had made an Internet connection with DirecTV! But when I went back to use my other wireless devices, this method changed my wireless router name and these devices didn't connect anymore. I had to go back and set up my router again to my previous configuration (find the new router name by identifying the new router name on my PC's "Connect to a Network", go to 192.168.1.1 and get the new password, run the router setup disk again, and rename the router and password). So starting over as though I just opened the adapter box, I used the Linksys setup disk and followed the instructions, but DID NOT push the icon buttons this time. I entered the router name and password and that was easy. You program the adapter to talk to your router and then move it to your DVR (usually in a different room than your router) and plug it into your DVR (top Ethernet port, which is 1. The bottom Ethernet port (2) lets you connect the DVR to another device like a Blu-Ray player and connect it to the Internet). Wait a couple of minutes until all the lights on your adapter light up. The Wi-fi light might continue to blink - mine does. Then use your DirecTV DVR remote and press: Menu . . . Parental, Favs & Setup . . . System Setup . . . Network Setup . . . Repeat Network Setup . . . and Connect. Wait a half minute or so and it should say it has connected. If I had these instructions I would have been in business in about 15 minutes start to finish.

I have an existing G Linksys Router that has worked well for years, but with all the gaming my boys do online with xbox and PS3, I felt like the N router would be a better choice. The new router came with easy install software and if you are a first time user it is very streamlined, but I was updating an existing wirless network and I didn't want to use the manufactured Linksys router name and WEP Password. Linksys really should have made upgrading more user friendly, like allowing you to make up your own WEP key code during set up. We have six computers accessing this router, so I didn't want to go to each computer and update the router name and WEP key code. Simple I thought, I will just access the router and update the router name and WEP key code. Wrong, once you do that, it stops letting you use the handy dandy easy software and then wouldn't allow the other computers access even with the right router name and WEP key code. So I called Linksys and their support folks took control of one of our computers and made some adjustments to get our computers to have wireless access. They also helped us get the xbox working, but their are some sessions these games cannot access online through the router I guess because of the enhanced firewall on the router and the only way we can get them to work is to hire a networking group to configure the router to function. Linksys graciously turned our call over to this paid service company. Over all the router works great, I believe better than the old one, but the new security has made it more challenging to add other wireless platforms like our Samsumg Blu Ray Home theater system that I am still unable to connect wirelessly because according to Samsung, the router firewall is preventing it. Back to the xbox, I feel Linksys should have more ownership of the gaming issue though because when we connected the xbox directly to the modem, joining other forums for gaming was not an issue and even with a ethernet cable connected directly to the Linksys it still denied access. This is a router issue in my eye's and I feel Linksys should have trained people on staff to handle this kind of thing. I would recommend this router to those that are first time users and who don't use multiple platforms like an xbox or home theater system with wifi or Kindle. itouch had no issue ironically.

I bought this product with great trepidation because I saw wildly varying reviews. Being averse to dealing with tech support I had armed myself with a document I had created listing all the issues and the possible solutions to them.Ultimately I needed NONE of them. The install was flawless and the performance outstanding so far.Things I discovered: I had to update my XP pro machine to SP3 before I could start the install. Not a biggieThe install itself went entirely without a hitch. I have Comcast Xfinity connection. Had to power off and restart the cable modem after the install was completed (I was aware of this because I had recently replaced the cable modem)Major issues I was expecting that DIDN'T happen:Freezing of the software during install never happenedThe name of the network (SSID) can be changed under router settings I opted not to for reasons below (my desire to use use my old router as a switch and access point)Biggest plus: I was able to use my existing router that had Wireless G simply by changing the router to behave like a switch. In order to do that you have to access the router's admin page (1) turn off the DHCP server (2) change the router's IP address to something other than 192.168.1.1 (which is the default primary router IP address) (3) turn off any port forwarding that you might be using for game boxes. (5) the ethernet from the primary router needs to be plugged into one of the "switch ports" NOT what would normally be the input from the cable modem. So you effectively lose one port but you have a 3 port switch with a wireless access point that operates in G mode. This was the reason I did not change the SSID on the primary router because I was able to distinguish between the N router's wireless signal and the G router's wirelss signal. This was a big deal to me since he old router was moved into the basement where typically I had NO wireless signal, AND I had been led to believe by Cisco Tech support that a standard G access point would NOT work with the E3000.My download speeds tested using speedtest.net went up from 13Mbps to 21Mbps over the wireless connection ! the upload speeds went from 2Mbps to 3Mbps.Couldn't be more pleased with the performance so far. Very happy with this product.

I bought this to use as a bridge when I lived in Texas. It could not be set up there and the technicians told me it was my router. I tried it on four different routers (three brands) and couldn't get it to work, nor could the techs. I got frustrated with it, and as I could not return the product, I just ended up running a 100 ft long ethernet cable through my house.I moved to Indiana and have a different router (yet ANOTHER different brand) and could not get the product to work. I called tech support, they guarenteed me they could get it to work if I paid 29.99 since it had been more than a year since I purchased the product, despite never being able to fix the issue the first time and it being the same issue. They also said I purchased the bridge in 2007, which was wrong. They also had my email incorrect. Great record keeping, guys.Running around on forums led me to the conclusion that it would not work with my router regardless of their support (many people could not fix this issue, particularly in the case of the router I have, a 2wire). I'm glad I didn't waste more money trying to fix this thing. I will never purchase another Linksys. The router I had from them was a waste of money that didn't work either. I would sell it but I don't want to put others through the pain and disappointment.

Router arrived a day earlier than expected. Comes with an install CD, no printed manual. The CD is needed to get the router working. Have every device connected to the router, insert CD, hide and watch....it goes out and determines the setup, easy walk thru, gives you option to change the name of your network, and prints out the password. It like, takes over.I have to have a different setup due my VPN and work requirements, and sharing my personal PCs on the same network at the same time. The no brainer install wasn't exactly foolproof in my case. Undoing, then customizing, what the router software did (including giving the router itself its own set 'of brains'), was time consuming and shouldn't have been so difficult. The worst part of it all, make a change as the admin, says ok now continue....more often than not, a reboot of the router was needed for the changes to apply. They saved just fine, didn't apply most times without a reboot. There were a couple of times I had to power off the router and cable modem, then repower them back on in sequence, to get things available. At certain times, the entire network dies. I have not determined why this happens. Probably due to my customizations; however, I feel, if the manufacturer made such options available, then they should work. This morning was really weird. I'd booted up my work PC around 430am. I didn't get logged on the PC until 645am. I power up my personal PC to get magicjack going. I make the call, get into conference, talking with bosses, then for no reason, around 715am, both PCs lost connectivity with the router and I ended up powering down everything (PCs, router, cable modem) to get everything back. I just thank goodness I have the foresight to have backup communications (ie, my cell phone).I got the router a month ago. This 'outage' has occured 5 times since. The firmware is up to date. I am not using any wireless devices with this router. I don't get it (but I will).
