Set up was easy enough with the included disc, but it never tells you what the ip address of the device is, which is rather annoying. Had to use an ip sniffer to track it down. The REAL problem however is that it works fine for about 20-30min and then it drops the connection. It will re-establish within seconds, but if you're using this for Netflix or Hulu, it is BEYOND frustrating, and makes the product functionally worthless. I've gone to Cisco's site and tried some of the fixes (like changing the beacon setting) and it still doesn't work. I'll echo what everyone has said in marveling that Cisco/Linksys could even release this at all. It seems like the only real fix is to turn off all security, which I just don't feel is an option where I live. I would do the Powerline but a)the house that I live in has wiring that is 50 years old and so I'm sure it's very 'dirty' and b) the two points I need to connect are on different circuits (I have two fuse/breaker boxes in the house...don't ask) so now I have a very attractive cat 5 cable snaked around the house...it's ugly as sin, but I know it works :(

This review is written with the goal of helping other Linux users who may be installing this product(the same should apply to Mac). If you're like me, you have PLENTY of other things to do than to spend an hour installing hardware. Hope this helps ya...This installation was done on RHEL 5.As an IT professional I've been working with Cisco Products for over 15 years and I have the highest respect for their product line. That being said, the instructions that come with this product are some of THE WEAKEST I've encountered in a VERY long time. Evidently the tech writers and product manager(s) didn't consider the NON-Windows end user when they released this manual to the consumer.*************************************************************Cisco engineering and tech writers, please read this section:*************************************************************Any instruction manual worth a penny will have a section AT THE BEGINNING of the manual that will break down the various platforms where the product will be installed. The goal of said section is to EXPEDITE the installation of the product. A traffic cop, if you will. The section, typically, looks something like this:1. Windows Installation: please go to[section for Windows instructions]2. Mac Installation: please go to[section for Mac instructions]3. Linux Installation: please go to[section for Linux instructions]But, since this product doesn't have a properly written manual you have to wade through a few sections BEFORE you get to the MANUAL portion of the installation, which is what's needed for Linux and Mac users.Be forewarned: the CD will NOT have anything readable by Linux except the user manual(UserGuide.pdf). As soon as you load the disk, open UserGuide and go to the section titled:Chapter 3:Advanced ConfigurationSection: How to Access the Web-Based UtilityBasically, you will need to do the following(some of it is copied and pasted from Biju Xavior's review):FIRST: Kill the power to your Router so it doesn't transmit its DCHP address. You will need to access the DEFAULT IP on the Bridge(see step 7 below) and if you have your router transmitting DHCP it will NOT allow you to access your Bridge's default IP. Kill the power on your router! Trust me :-)SECOND: reset your Bridge. This will cause the Bridge to default to IP address 169.254.1.250. Reset button is located back side of the bridge. Press and hold 30 seconds and release.1. Change your Linux IP Address to either: 169.254.1.1 or 169.254.5.62. Change your Linux Subnet Mask to 255.255.0.03. Apply, OK4. Connect Data Cable from computer to Bridge.5. Connect Bridge's electrical power cord to outlet.6. Open your Firefox browser.7. Type on the address bar: 169.254.1.2508. The Web-based Utility should open. Click on the wireless and change your settings. You can also Update you Firmware on the same page.9. In EVERY page you open click Save Changes.** Note ** The bridge will NOT find the router after setting and saving your wireless settings. This may lead you to believe that it's not configured. But it is! Go to step 10....10. Power up your router! Now your Bridge is ready for use.THAT EASY!!! And, it works GREAT! Fast and reliable.Note: The time taken in step 8 above will depend on what security level you are implementing. I use WEP on my router so my setup was as easy as entering my KEY.As for how many stars? Boy, the unit works flawlessly but the instructions really got me upset.FIVE STARS for the hardware and ONE STAR for instruction manual, which should average to three stars but I will be lenient considering how well this unit works and give it FOUR STARS.

I spent a few hours trying to get this gizmo to work, following the instructions on the sheet enclosed and also on my computer screen from the setup disc (which were a bit different here and there, but that's not so unusual). Gave up and went to bed, tried once more the next morning, failed again, called their help line. Good news there is I got an adequately comprehensible, very helpful guy, after essentially zero waiting time. Bad news is that after something like two hours (!!) of trying everything the guy could think of, he declared himself unable to solve the problem and opined that the unit itself might be defective. So I'm returning it, taking advantage of Amazon's good return policy (which is one of the reasons i like to buy at this site). If you feel luckier and/or smarter than I am and want to try this piece of junk for yourself, here's a hint that's not in the printed or electronic instructions: if you get part way and then get stuck, to start again you need to hold the reset button (little hole between the power and the ethernet jacks) down for at least 30 seconds, according the techie.

I've been running this router for about a year now at two different locations. Router has been a pain at both locations. The case is severely under engineered for the amount of heat the chip produces. Users across the internet have reported the unit reaching as high as 170 degrees. I'm not surprised it was pulled from Linksys's lineup so quickly. Linksys seems to deny this unit exists as they stopped releasing firmware updates as of December 2010. I've actually been able to make my unit run stable by installing a 5v laptop fan into the top of the case, its powered from the USB port. So far it has been stable for 3 weeks. Prior to the fan I was lucky to get two days of service before clients could not connect. I've also ditched the Linksys firmware in favor of Tomato USB. When the unit is running stable, performance is pretty good. I had a terrible time streaming movies over the wireless with 40 mhz channels enabled. When I dropped them back to 20 Mhz, my streaming was perfectly smooth. Even 802.11b/g clients were affected. Coverage in my two story 1920's home has been far superior to my previous 802.11b/g wireless routers and access points. I'll probably replace this unit with enterprise grade Cisco equipment as soon the 802.11n access points start to drop in price.Pro'sGigabit Ethernet300 Mbps on 802.11nDual BandAccepts third party firmwareConsSevere OverheatingExpensiveNo longer in the Linksys lineup

First, I'm clueless about technology and needed to set up a new modem and wireless router. We'd just bought a new LG tv for the bedroom and I got the USB wireless dongle made for the TV so we could watch netflix. Our internet connection wasn't that good, frequently dropping or slowing to a crawl and I'd have to reboot the modem/router combo so I wasn't sure we'd be able to watch netflix. I thought it was time to invest in a new modem and router so I did some research and bought a Zoom modem and the Netgear 3700 router. The Zoom modem was easy, just hook it up and call Comcast. That part took a long time, otherwise it was a snap to set up. The wired connection on the new modem is so much faster than the old modem it was as though I'd upgraded my service (comparing wired to wired). Setting up the Netgear router was a disaster and after hours of struggling, I finally realized it wasn't me, it was that the port for the connection from the modem didn't work. I exchanged the Netgear for the Cisco E3000, plugged it in and the wireless network was setup before I even realized that I was done. It was really easy to set up the security, the guest user option, and the Cisco smart key to connect the laptops to the network. It took about half an hour and would have been faster if I'd been more sure of what I was doing. The Cisco setup was so easy that anyone could do it whereas the Netgear instructions were confusing which is why it took so long for me to figure out the problem was the hardware, not user error. My only complaint is about the shape and finish of the router. It has a shiny piano finish which fingerprints and attracts dust, and it has a big footprint unless you hang it on the wall, which can be awkward to do depending on your set up.Our new wireless network is faster in general, never slows to a crawl, has yet to drop, and Netflix is awesome!

I have been a Lynksys user for many years. This is the kind of device that you fear so much that you are afraid that switching to another product will be even worse. This unit is decent performer. The trouble, however, is configuration and maintenance. For example, I need to make some modifications to the router's configuration. The computer from where it was originally installed was recently replaced. I figured that re-installing the software in a laptop would give me the access to the router. The installation software. however, is so ill deviced, that it was unable to detect the router even with the computer directly connected through an ethernet cable. It wisely advised me to use the original computer which at this moment is dead.Of course, Cisco will gladly help me for 29.95.It is so frustrating having to call the technical support to even install the silliest part of the product. In other situation the software cannot resolve a conflict that apparently arises if you switch to a Times-Warner Cable and, again, if a year already passed from the date you purchase the product, even changing a small number will cost you 29.95 because the software is uncapable of testing a new IP address that may resolve the conflict easily. For all these years and several routers, I don't remember a single time when the software installed the router flawlessly, without calling the tech support.Greedy, greedy, greedy

I've been a LinkSys user for forever -- from the days of their very first products. This if the first of their products that I'm going to give a low rating. It basically boils down to 3 issues:- Setup: There's a setup utility that can be run and it handles the simple setup. But it , but it can't handle slightly more sophisticated setup. For that, you need to use the built-in web interface -- this is the way that setup for all previous LinkSys products worked. But, as soon as you use the web interface, the utility interface is sort of out of sync. Everything needs to be available from the web interface. (Other reviews pointed out these issues, but I didn't quite believe them. Now I do.)- Limitations: I really wanted to use the Guest login capability, but there doesn't seem to have a way to give that its own network name. It automatically uses your network name with "-Guest" added on. I don't like this, since I like to keep the name of my network hidden (although I realize this only buys a minor amount of enhanced security).- Reliability: I'm now experiencing reliability problems -- and this probably the largest issue. Some of my wireless devices, including a laptop, get to the point where they can't connect to the router without having to power down and restart the router. This is unacceptable. I've looked for firmware updates that might address these issues, but Linksys doesn't seem to issue firmware fixes as much as they used to. It seems like their primary mode is to make new models so that people have to upgrade. So, for the first time, I'm looking at routers from other vendors and I'll likely switch.Bummer.

This is my first time setting up a home WiFi network. So you can imagine I was a little nervous. Actually the Linksys E3000 is quite easy to set-up, I loaded the CD-ROM for instructions and proceeded. I have only tested the WiFi with my iPhone to date and plan to test it with other devices in the coming week. However, the main problem so far is the unit runs so hot that I put a kitchen hot plate under it and the device heated the hot plate and the desk underneath the hot plate! Because of this I was turning off the computer and the E3000 unless I was using the computer, but this defeats the purpose of having a WiFi home network, right? After tracking down the support web page and reading a number of posts, I found it is quite common for this device to run extremely hot. The solutions: return it, buy a laptop cooling pad to place under it, prop up the device to allow the hot air to escape, or turn the device upside down. I decided to turn the device upside down (it's not known if this not recommended. But since Cicso pretty much leaves the consumer on her own, only time will tell. However, I may return the device since this seems like a poor solution as do all the other solutions I found in the user support forum at the Cisco Home Community Support Forum: [...]

bought this for $120 a few months ago and now that it's under $100 I would buy it all over again. This guy works very well and pick up my wimpy wireless signal from 50 feet away.Notes:1. My wireless signal is 50 feet away, but on the same floor of my house.2. I have the wireless catcher connected only to my DirectTv box nothing else.3. The set up was a bit convoluted, so I paid $30 for a Linksys tech support call and they were able to get me up and running. I have a very old router (4 years old) and had a bridged set-up and knew I was beyond my IT capabilities so I immediately called for support, well worth the money.4 stars because I needed to call tech support, but other than that I have had no problems would definitely recommend to someone else.

I bought this after giving up connecting my Blue-ray to a year old AT&T DSL 2WIRE over a much cheaper ZyXEL. Unlike ZyXEL, where the setup is a sacred process (which didn't work for me after multiple attempts and hrs spent), WET610N (theoretically) installs itself. Funny enough, the Easy install booklet guides you through a bunch of Steps for Dummies (like, "plug one end of the cable into..."), but it doesn't tell you that you need to load the install CD into a computer connected to the same router (wire or wirelessly) as the unit you're installing. So, it was a bit unclear to me what exactly was going to happen during the install process.Unlucky me, the auto-install at the end failed connecting to my wireless network automatically. I suspect it defaults some security settings differently from what my hardcoded 2WIRE's WEP security uses. Thanks to related Internet postings, I was directed to forget about the auto install and just hit the unit directly via its IP address (assigned by my router) and do the "advanced" install, which really is rather very simple and basic. I agree with other reviewers that the person installing must know at least how to get the IP address off the Router's management screens. Alternatively, a PC can be connected to the device directly, which requires changing the PC's IP address to a static. In either case, if the person has no idea what's going on - the auto-install failure pretty much means calling the tech support (which according to others is not a top notch of a service). The last trick was powering the unit down after the install, as well as powering down the blue ray to erase its memory of being connected to the internet via a temporary wire. The Guide, surprisingly, stops at the point of setting the unit up and has no mentioning of how the unit can actually be used.On my 802.11g network the speed on the unit's Status screen was showing at 1 Mbps. Before running out to get a new 802.11n router I searched the Internet again and found notes that the speed should be checked under a load only, because at the idle state it is always very slow. Sure enough, while streaming a Netflix movie the speed reported went up to 54Mbps.

While there are many nice features in the E3000 over the prior WRT54* routers, the main differentiator between the features of the E2000 and E3000 other than over $80 is that the E3000 allows you to plug in a USB drive and share files as well as serving them over UPnP AV. One undeclared issues is that the media server functionality is really PC only.It doesn't get mentioned in the system requirements of the E3000 on the Cisco packaging or the list of features. In reality the router folder shares only support FAT32 and NTFS and no UFS or HFS Mac file system and it isn't possible to write to the shared drives when they are using NTFS even to put the content onto the USB drive from a Mac. Unfortunately the primary partition in an XP format defaults to NTFS and this is read only from a Mac. The E3000 might also need for the partition map to be created from a Windows machine. I ended up having to attach it to an XP laptop as the E3000 couldn't recognize the default Seagate drive partition map. The only solution to the lack of Mac file system support is to restrict oneself to FAT32 as this can be written to from a Mac but that is a long out of date format.Secondly the UPnP AV technology to play the streamed video does not work with iTunes, Apple TV, Boxee or on the Mac. The only thing that is possible with anything other than FAT32 is to ftp files to the router (Which is a clumsy slow process) and then be able to use the content as read only files. It isn't fast enough to play back HD video in real time to Boxee as a file share. Instead it stutters and breaks. Given that most home purchasers are using Macs the lack of Mac support seems to be a major failing of the E3000 that really needs to be indicated on the packaging. A waste of $80 over the E2000 just to find the only useable functionality over the E2000 for most users is as an ftp server. In short the E3000 is for PC only home networks. Those with mixed networks or Mac or Boxee setups are better off saving their money and time by using the E2000 and forgetting the USB drive.

I've used Linksys home routers for more than a decade and this is by far the best one yet in every respect. I didn't bother with their fancy new guided configuration software as I'm an experienced user. (I do suspect that inexperienced users might be almost as intimidated by the nifty new setup software, which transports the desired configuration to each new computer via a thumb drive, as they were by the older setup procedure; but that's another story). But I swear that the manual configuration took no longer than getting the shrink wrap off the outer box and undoing the twisty-ties -- reset the admin password, give the SSID a name, select security type, and set a network password. That's it -- all other factory pre-sets are exactly what you need and would expect. Total time for manual setup once the shrink wrap was off -- perhaps 3 minutes at most, and most of that spent crawling under the desk to plug it in. As I used the same SSID and network password as the old Linksys box I was replacing, all the machines actually rejoined the new network and router by themselves (and switched from G to N protocol) as soon as I entered the network password into the router control panel, with no prompting. And finally, the new packaging, even though it shouldn't really matter that much, is nothing short of breathtaking. If you're used to staring at the funny blue box on 4 legs with the two ear antennae, suddenly you enter the 21st century with this new box -- everyone familiar with Linksys products wants to touch it as if it's fine jewlery! It must be only 20% of the volume of the old box. A real triumph of industrial design, quite aside from the hardware and software.

is in order to get it paired with your router, for it to even show up on your computer in the setup cd that came with the wireless bridge(the reason why it keeps saying it does not find any signal and such sort), is THE MOMENT YOU PLUG IN THE BLUE CABLE TO THE BACK OF YOUR WIRELESS ROUTER AND WIRELESS BRIDGE, AND THE POWER IS CONNECTED, HOLD THE BUTTONS(sorry i dont know the name of the buttons.. but it should be only one button on each) YOUR ROUTER AND BRIDGE FOR ABOUT A SECOND OR 2. THEN YOU PRESS NEXT, NEXT, NEXT IN THE SETUP PROGRAM UNTIL IT STARTS SEARCHING FOR DEVICES IN RANGE.i was stuck on this problem for months. i bought this product a year ago and someone resetted my wireless router a few months back. the bridge wasnt connecting to it anymore. i forgot who told me how to do this pairing in the first place. i thought it was a reviewer on amazon, i know i didnt think of it myself, i just remembered it. I am also very positive the cd and papers provided with this product doesnt tell you how to do this. I love this bridge though.. its just the setting up/installing that i hate..i use it strictly for my sony bravia tv which doesnt have built in wifi.

I've had this router for a few months now and it actually made me stop playing my 360 for about that long. I'd spent hours messing with all the settings, reading tech support forums, posting on forums, etc. and could never get my 360 to actually work well on the network. I just recently spent another few hours and kind of got my 360 working (only reason I care is I wanted to watch some Netflix) and it's giving me all kinds of issues again. I'm picking out a new router.Do yourself a favor, don't get this router. It does not play well with others and the range is pretty weak.EDIT: I was talking to another co-worker about this router and he told me that it was probably because it over-heated. I took a look at the interwebs about it, and sure enough, that very well could've been the issue. If you have this router and it's getting a bit hot, attach some of those pad things for chairs on the four feet to give it a little elevation and help with airflow. You should also probably dust under it once in a while since that stuff really holds onto the heat. I'm not changing my rating though, because that's a pretty bad design flaw.

UPDATE: The whole problem turned out to be the bridge required a firmware update. It was available on the CISCO web site. Once I did that, the device was much more reliable. It would have been nice for someone to have been able to tell me that and saved me a lot of aggravation. I am not sure if this company sends software update notices to its registered customers, but that would be a good idea. Also, I have since replaced my wireless router with a much faster one, and any latency has all but disappeared. Actually, I had absolutely NO latency with this configuration until last night. First time I have had any pauses during streaming in several months. My previous frustration filled post; This device is the wireless Bridge recommended by Sony for their HD TV's that have internet capability. Although SONY has a configuration specific to this device, it does not work. It took me numerous configurations and reconfigurations of the TV/Bridge to get it to work. I had SONY on the phone while doing it for an hour one day. Their support people are great and try to help, but this device just continued to fail When I did finally get it to work, it worked well with few latency issues if any. When it failed the first time, it took me 2 days to get it to work again. After another week or so, it has failed again. This time no matter what I do, (Resetting router, putting it back to factory settings and reconfiguring. Over and over again mind you.) It does not work. TV will not recognize it. I contacted Sony, Cisco, my internet provider, even Netflix trying to seek advice on how to make this work. Everyone just gives you canned answers that DO NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM> Wost of all, no one takes ownership of the problem because of mixed vendor equipment.Take my advice. Save your sanity and blood pressure. DO NOT purchase this item. DO NOT attempt using this wireless bridge for streaming video.

I recently bought an LG brand LED-LCD and a Sony brand blu-ray player. Both take either a LAN connection or a proprietary dongle for wi-fi internet. Since neither of the devices support the new HDMI 1.4 feature of integrated internet in the HDMI cable, I could either find a way to wire both these devices or buy a wi-fi adapter for each. I opted to purchase this bridge to connect to my wireless router that sits upstairs hooked up to the cable modem. Then I could use a switch to hook up both devices.Installation via CD failed at the most important step...finding the bridge. I went into my router admin interface and saw that it was listed under attached devices as 192.168.1.4 and device name as "WET610N". I therefore loaded that address in a browser to pull up the admin interface for the Bridge (use pw "admin" and no username to get in). Once in, I plugged in the network SSID for my router, along w/ the security credentials needed and it showed successful. One final thing I did was to reserve the local address (192.168.1.4) for the bridge by specifying the MAC address shown on the attached devices page. I then unplugged the power/lan for the bridge, took it downstairs and plugged in the power to it. From there I plugged the ethernet cable into a switch (I just picked up a cheap Dynex 100MBit from Best Buy) and ran another ethernet cable from the switch to the TV. Turned the TV on and checked the Network section in the menu and it was able to connect successfully.Cable-modem->Wireless Router (Netgear)->Cisco Bridge->4 port-switch (Dynex)->HDTV (LG) .... success!I made a Netflix account and was able to stream HD programming without any issues!!! I will update this review when I have the blu-ray hooked up via the switch as well, but I don't anticipate any issues.

This review is really only relevant for Fios customers. I have fios and the actiontec modemn/wireless router they give you. For some reason, I tried the set up CD close to 10 times and it didn't work. But I figured out how to set it up very easily. You don't need the CD to do this.1. If you've been trying to set it up unsuccessfully, first hold the reset button on the back of the adapter for 20 seconds.2. Plug the adapter into the back of the fios modemn/wireless router (and have the AC plugged in to the adapter is on)3. It may take a minute to register. Then, in your browser, go to 192.168.1.14. Login in to your Fios account. I believe the default is SN: admin PW: password (if you can't get it to work, just hit the reset button on the back of your fios modemn/router and try again after it reboots)5. Look up the IP address of the adapter. It should only have a different last number(s) after the final period. The adapter is the one listed at Wet610n6. Plug the adapters ip address into your browser. This should take you to the adapters web page. I believe the default login is (if thats wrong, the instruction pdf on the cd has it): SN: leave blank. PW: admin7. Then, click on the wireless tab. Change it to manual. Put in your network's name. Then change security to WEP (WEP i believe is verizon's default, if you changed it to something else, obviously pick that instead) and then type in you wireless password (its whats on the sticker on your modemn/router if you never changed it.8. Hit save. It should process for a minute. Once it's done, you're all set. You should see the wireless light on the adapter lit up now. Move it to whatever device you want to make wireless.

Simply upsetting.Purchased device 5 weeks ago...Worked at it should for 4 weeks. After that thats where the problems begins.Constant rebooting itself, dropping the network, dropping connections, general failures.CISCO support is something horrible, seriously. After hours with them on the phone they don't want to issue RMA, they want me to pay them $9.99 for remote access to take a look on the router settings... I'm network guy, this is what i do every day...they just not hearing their clients...there is a PROMT that they have to follow, step to the left or to the right - they don't know what to answer...Its crazy, i have to pay for something after already paying 160$ for a router???? I've used $29 Belkin router for 4 years and never had even single tiny issue with it....~200$ device gives a hell...Third time today calling about RMA, same medication given to me all the time - can you check MTU, change channel on 5ghz settings, uncheck filter, lets upgrade firmware (which was done at first day of the purchase) etc...Goddamn, we did it already 10 times....Waiting for Amazon reply...if they will take it back or i can exchange it - i will never use CISCO for my home needs....Netgear WNDR3700 N600 all the way...Same advice to you...Although i do believe in possibility of "getting a lemon", its quite possible, sure...but just cause of their support, they way they "listening" you....Naw, never CISCO again...thanksUpdate:Amazon is simply Amazing. They issued RMA and already shipped new item for me withing 2 hours after speaking to them. Will have to give a second try to CISCO, don't want to take advantage of Amazon, they helped a lot any way. Will revise this review after few weeks.

I replaced an older Linksys router with a Linksys E1200, and needed an adapter for my Compaq 6910p Win XP laptop in order to take advantage of the N-band speeds .. or so I thought. The adapter does work, but I'm seeing the adapter randomly throttle anywhere between 52 and 130 Mbps. It eventually settles down in the 117-130 Mbps range, so at least it's falling on the hi-side. Signal strength is consistently flagged as 'excellent', so I can't complain there. No dropped connections, yet, but I've only had it for a few days now. The adapter does heat up quite a bit though. Not enough to melt the plastic case, but enough to be a bit disconcerting. I haven't used other N-band adapters, so there's nothing to compare it with. For now it does seem like a decent laptop adapter anyhow, except for the heat issue. I'd say 3.5 - 4 stars overall.

I've installed two of these routers now, and find that they both work very well.I am also using USB attached storage to convert these routers into Network Attached Storage units. Connecting and configuring disk drives was very straightforward with the web interface. The only issue is in Googling up the right site to describe how to convert the ISP's wireless DSL router into a DSL modem. There is no DSL connection on these routers -- only Ethernet and Wireless connections. If your ISP connection is DSL through a wireless router you will need to reconfigure the wireless router to act as a simple DSL modem and shut off the Wireless side. You will also need to make provision to manage the wireless modem. In my case AT&T provided 2Wire Wireless DSL routers. Routing had to be turned off and the wireless had to be shut down on the two wire device. PPPoE functionality moved to the Linksys E3000 units. The feed to the E3000 comes from an ethernet port on the 2Wire Gateway Router. To manage the gateway router (now DSL modem) a second ethernet connection is run from the 2Wire unit to a local network Ethernet port on the E3000.The good news is that the 2Wire units are no longer dropping DSL several times a day. Neither 2Wire Gateway router has dropped the DSL since the new routers were installed. Apparently the 2Wire Wireless Gateway routers aren't really up to acting as both DSL modems and Wireless routers. They work fine as DSL Modems.I wish the Cisco/Linksys documentation would clearly describe how to carry out the steps to use this router with an existing DSL Wireless gateway... Even as an experienced network engineer, I found the task of gathering the right information and completing the ISP Gateway reconfiguration somewhat daunting. This is definitely not a task to be undertaken lightly -- and certainly not an appropriate task for uninitiated users.

In a 200 year old historical building, the contractor installs coax under 4 inches of plaster for our local network. Can't easily or cheaply rip all of that out and will have problems with the local historical committee if we do. Need a way to run both a LAN and an IP Phone network in the building. Ordered some of these, put in a wireless router, synced them up, and installed all of my ethernet devices - works perfectly. Maybe it isn't what this was intended for but it gets my job done under abnormal circumstances so I am completely satisfied, as I usually am with Cisco products.

I bought the E3000 one year ago (sometime in July 2010) for $150.Pros:I've set up routers before, but I was shocked at how little came in this package--not to mention the 'aesthetic' of the design of the inside of the box. This indicated to me that Cisco has a great amount of confidence in their product, and thus far the router has actually met that expectation.- I lose signal only perhaps once or twice a week for a few seconds and I have never needed to power cycle (unplug, reset)!- Very fast wireless-N transfer speeds across our home network, nearly USB 2.0 speeds. I just clocked a single 1GB file transferring at 2 MB/s- I clocked a 12 GB wireless transfer of smaller files at 2.4 MB/s- Streams HD video from my PC to my PS3 with a TVersity media server seamlessly- My smartphone can pick up the E3000's signal from 100+ feet away (I actually measured this distance using Google Earth. The ruler tool is accurate to within a few inches). The furthest I've walked and still maintained a decent signal is 160 ft.Cons:- The E3000 gets pretty hot. Don't keep it underneath anything that traps heat. Regardless, it still works after one year and I've only turned it off a few times. I think the developers might want to reconsider their design to disperse heat better.

I found the speed outstanding the short time it worked. Having located this at a smaller place than my last Linksys, I can't comment on the range increase it had over the old 2.4G models. The Cisco Connect basically doesn't work, so either be prepared to accept its simple minded approach (which includes an unsecured guest acct and a security system with a password that is complicated enough that it requires writing down, which of course negates completely its value as a password once put on paper) or be prepared to take the same steps you have always taken to set up your Linksys routers. Like most of the other reviewers I found the tried and true 192.168.1.1 url and manual setup the best way to get this up and running.Actually for intellectual exercise I decided to reset the router and reset the 192.168.1.1 to factory defaults and try and use Cisco Connect to clear out the unsecured guest acct that the goofus software had installed. Interestingly enough the Cisco Connect wouldn't work the second time either. Even worse it apparently set a new password and where it had previously given me this password so I could manually set up the router it wouldn't do that again. So I can't set it up manually.Therefor it goes back to Amazon. A shame as it isn't Amazon's fault that Linksys can't build a router interface that works. So I will edit this review to what it deserves....a zero.New edit a day later. Not being one to give up, I went to my favorite technical support forum (Google) and saw that a hard reset of the router requires a 30 second depression of the reset button, not 5 sec as I originally thought. After uninstalling the Cisco Connect software from both puters and doing a second but this time ultimately a successful hard reset of the router, I tried the Cisco Connect software for the 3rd time. (admittedly this was some 5 hours into my install attempt, so I gotta admit I was not thrilled at that point, but I kept going). This time the CC software worked. It actually moved from screen to screen and didn't freeze up. In fact at the last screen, which apparently I nor many of the other reviewers had ever reached, the CC software does give you the option of resetting the SSID and the password as well as the password of the guest acct which you can decide to use or not use. These simple changes made through the CC software will not keep you (or so they say) from using the CC software in the future. That part is claimed by Linksys, but I am very reluctant to change anything else now that it appears to be working and working well.So I will reedit the rating to 3 stars but will still leave setup rated at 1 star.Thank you for bearing with my tale of woe and ultimately successful installation

I just purchaed this router after returning a Netgear WNDR4500 that had internet connection issues. This router is so easy to setup and configure with the web interface. The only problem was the fact you have to save each page before leaving or the setting will be lost on that page. I was on the web in less than 10 minutes. The FTP server is also a nice feature with a connected USB drive. The signal strength is excelent in all areas of my house with the router in the basement. I had poor signal strength with a D-Link DIR-825 that this router replaced. The unit looks good and runs cooler than other Linksys routers that I have owned. This is definitely worth the money.

I have only been using the E3000 for about 24 hours now, but I felt it was necessary to post to explain about all the "issues" using the Cisco Connect software and the advanced Web interface at the same time.Simply put, it is possible. Simple google queries gained me the information I needed.First use the Cisco Connect software (I'm using version 1.2.10260.0) to set up your router (Firmware 1.0.03 build 2), then from the software choose Router Settings, which will give you the random password it set up.Then log in through the web interface, change all you need to change, including a new admin password. Then there is an xml file on your Program Files that you will need to edit (google to find the file path), input your correct password, SSID, wireless key, etc into said file. Then voila! You can now use both Cisco connect and the web interface at the same time!I am currently using both the Cisco Connect software to manage my guest network (which I turned off) and my parental settings (which I also turned off), but am able to set up advanced configuration items like port forwarding, unique SSIDs, wireless security settings, etc using the web interface. My problems with this are:1) It's a serious design flaw that you must manage this router in two places.2) Now I have my WPA key and router password in an unecrypted xml file on my computer. I REALLY don't like that. With that begin said, so far this router has fixed all of the issues I was having with my old DIR-655, speeds are great, range is great (better than my DIR-655 was), and now I have N running on 5.8 Ghz and B/G running on 2.4 with separate SSIDs!All my devices; XPSP3, Vista Ultimate, Vista Business, Android phone, Wii, Netbook, VOIP and more all connect flawlessly with much higher speeds and a connection that hasn't dropped or given me a problem yet. This has so far been a solid router and is highly recommended!

Firstly: This product WILL NOT WORK with WPA or WPA2 keys that have spaces in them. It will refuse to connect and the interface (web or utility) will freeze when it tries to pull up the status of the device.Overall I'm happy with the device now that I have it set up and working. Getting there was much more of a pain than it should have been though. The included CD setup utility is easy but absurdly slow. The web interface is a much better choice if you are used to setting up wireless networks.Range appears to be lacking in the 5GHz spectrum; it is showing only a 30% signal strength at a location where my laptop indicates closer to 50-60%. However it doesn't seem to affect speed at all so as far as I'm concerned it is just fine. I also haven't experienced any trouble with the bridge dropping the connection. It seems very reliable.Speed wise the bridge is excellent. I see no difference between using the bridge or using the integrated wifi card on my laptop. Both hold 80-90mbps, which is really about all you can expect from an n network anyway. HD Video streams without a problem and transfers to and from my DVR go just as fast as they did using a 100mbps wired connection. So on the whole I'm satisfied. It is a good solution if you have a device that needs a wired connection (or multiple devices, just connect the bridge to an ethernet switch) in a location where running a cable isn't an option. Too bad it is so annoying to set up and has the WPA passphrase issue.

I have now had the router for 2 months and it's been a great purchase. I like many was a bit gunshy to get a Cisco router based on the reviews of this particular item, but in the end it's worked out (so far). I replaced a D-Link DI624 that we had for about 2 years. It was working alright however it didn't have N capability which our laptop and XBox 360 both had, and the router caused the VoIP phone service problems.Setup was easy - The Connect CD takes just a few minutes to install and just a few minutes more to connect to the internet. I am not the most tech savvy person but was able to maneuver through the software and settings quite easily. I also was able to set up QoS for the router so that the VoIP phone setup could take priority. The download and upload speeds were a marked improvement over the older router. It currently supports an iPod Touch, 2 Windows based PCs (both wireless, one G, one N), an Xbox 360 (wireless N), Sonos ZonePlayer 90 (wired), Ooma phone (wired), and DirecTV on-demand setup (wired).I didn't give it 5 stars as the upload speed, while faster than the older router, was still not where I expected it to be. I will keep playing with the settings until I can improve this. Also, the unit does run hot as others have noted. Thankfully it's in an open area where it gets proper ventilation (highly recommended).

I bought this as a replacement for my Belkin Wireless N+ 802.11n Router (Black), as the Belkin seemed to have some stability issues, including problems maintaining LAN connectivity.Overall, I rate the Cisco E3000 as a great all-around router. It solved my issues with LAN stability. I like the usual Linkys/Cisco polished web interface for the configuration settings (I could care less about the Connect software). This router has nearly all of the advanced settings that I could want for my little home network (which connects several laptops, smartphones, televisions, game systems, IP cams, and HTTP/FTP servers). However, I would randomly experience over a 90% drop in my WAN speeds, from >20Mbps down to <2Mbps, which would last for a period of several hours. I troubleshot my ISP connection (swapped in my old Belkin and WRT54G routers) with no issues found, I checked that I had the latest firmware, I messed with uPnP, QoS, DNS, IP release/renew settings, I tried reboots and resets, I even elevated and re-oriented the router thinking it might be a thermal issue. Unfortunately, nothing seemed to determinatively fix the problem with the E3000, except for waiting a few hours. Searching the Cisco forums, I found that this same WAN speed issue is a common source of frustration for many other users. So despite it's otherwise good performance, this degraded WAN speed issue is a deal breaker for me, because my streaming video services become practically unusable.I've since returned the E3000 and exchanged it for a Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router WNDR3700. While the configuration interface is not quite as polished as Cisco's, it has some more advanced features, and its performance and reliability have been flawless for the few weeks it's been in service.

I have owned several Linksys routers including the WRT54G which worked extremely well, so of course I wanted to buy another Linksys, now Cisco product, especially as my experience with Cisco had also been good. When I got the E3000, the initial setup seemed to proceed fairly easily but after I successfully connected my laptop, phone, etc. to the router, in a matter of an hour or two they lost connectivity. What followed was many hours of technical support, including support in which the rep connected to my computer and configured the router. In every case the router would lose its settings after a short period of time, the longest being overnight, so I could not even log into the router to check its settings or connect my wireless devices. I purchased two replacement E3000 routers, both of which had the same problems, although in different degrees. Ultimately, after at least 4 to 5 hours invested in tech support calls, I gave up and bought a router from another company. It has worked without problems from day 1. Unless I hear that Cisco has improved its quality control, I will be very reluctant to buy another one of their products.

I am very biased toward Linksys/Cisco in a very positive way.I recommend, specify and install these products all the time. The E3000 is very easy to setup (either manually or automatically), very stylish and of course from a great company.Unfortunately that's where all my praise stops. My normal router is the Apple Airport extreme and I purchased the E3000 to replace it. Why? Because the Airport extreme is very lacky when it comes to features. No DMZ, no blocking websites, etc. So it seemed like a no-brainer to get this. Out of the box I set it up manually, very easy, got it running in 5 minutes. Why sitting in the same room with the router, it worked great. Although I didn't test the speed, it was noticibly faster than the Airport Extreme. This is where the problem comes in. If I moved more than 50 ft away, the signal dropped to 1 bar. After fiddling with a lot of the functions, mixed mode off, blah blah, I could still not get it over 1 bar unless I was very close to it. So I decided to give the automatic configuration a try. Very quick, easy and done.Same thing. More than 50 ft away was a no go. So at this point I decided to see if there was some newer firmware for this device. Sure enough there was a slightly newer revision on Linksys website. Downloaded, flashed and rebooted. Same problem, very short range. I was thinking of giving the tomato firmware a shot, but it got too late and didn't feel like doing it. It's in the box ready to be returned, the Airport express is back online and has a super range. I can live without the features if I have to, range is much more important to me. If could be a defective unit, but somehow I doubt it. Again this could be unique to my situation, but I was very disappointed in this one.

This is a fantastic router!A friend of mine had an E3000 and said he bought his only after much review and research. I did the same and came up with the same results: Features, cost, and brand reputation all weighed out to find the Linksys E3000 would be my purchase. I have to say, I'm not a bit unhappy with it.Simultaneous dual-band (2.4 + 5ghz), a/b/g/n modes, gigabit switch, DD-WRT compatible, USB, plus a "guest" SSID to keep wifi guests from having access to shared network resources. Low-profile design means it fits in small areas too! :)The only problem is this router gets hot -- A check with the IR thermometer showed a surface temp of 61C, far outside Linksys' operational temperature range of 40C. It's not just mine; a Google search turned up plenty of people complaining of it being hot. But -- not a single report (that I could find) of heat-related failures. So, that's a good thing.I never experienced a problem with it while it was hot, it was just unsettling. So I came up with a USB-powered fan cooling solution that you can take a look at here:[...]Now the router is quietly cooled, down to 30C, and I'm not at all worried about it flaking out on me. Though I wonder if some of the heat-related issues are due to the DD-WRT firmware, as my friends was running stock Linksys and his was warm, but not as hot as mine (though I didn't have my IR thermometer, I could just feel the difference.) None the less, it was an inexpensive fix, and the DD-WRT firmware (especially on this router) is well worth investing in a fan.

I bought this so we could stream Netflix in our living room (no wired option at all). Despite being only about 30ft from the base station (admittedly through 3 or 4 drywall/wood walls) the bridge never gets more than 2-3 'bars' worth of signal. ALL of our other devices get better signal even if they are further away. It took a LOT of 'move here' test it, 'move here', test it to get a solid 2 bars (and sometimes 3 bars) of signal.I HATE devices that require you to run through some dumb 'set up program' to use, and it turns out this is one such device. While AFTER it is set up you can remote into it and get *SOME* diagnostic info (like signal strength), I have yet to find a way to go into it's web interface and set it up manually. We had some problems initially with streaming video, but I think that was actually my router slowly dieing. So I'm not going to get into that much here, sorry. Since the router has been replaced we haven't had any connectivity problems, but it's only really been providing connectivity for the BluRay to get it's firmware updates.I used to install Wireless networks and I'm used to a LOT better performance than this bridge provides. For the price, and the 802.11n, it really should do a LOT better than it does.

I have returned this item once, only to find that after hours of LinkSys support and waiting for a replacement, then more hours of linksys support, it just does not perform well for all devices.I have some devices it works fine with (Hardware VPN Juniper box) I have an even longer list of devices that it has issues with. If you plan to run a gamming device or Video device, it may work. Some descriptions of this device do not call it a bridge (generally) rather call it a gamming video adaptor. I did not buy it for that after a presale call to Linksys and being told it was just a bridge and would work for any ethernet device. But does not, they have offered to replace it a second time, by saying, and I quote; "maybe the whole lot was bad". I am doubtful, I think it was designed to work with a single device that passes binary data, mostly, like a game or video, but definitely not a bridge for any device as some marketing says.I also noticed that the device, while it has it's own IP address, seems to show up with the WET610N Mac address but with the IP address of the attached device to it. Maybe that is why I can only access the WET610N configuration using its IP address from the device attached, but not from another device on the access point side.I would not expect the WET610N mac address to be used with the MAC address of the attached device, rather it's own.My advice: Maybe believe the video game description(you'll have to try it yourself), but not any other description of it being a bridge.

After having owned many single band routers, it was time to upgrade to a dual band model. I first tried the Netgear 3700. After using it for about a week, I returned it because of poor transmission speeds and messy firmware.Thankfully that week, the E4200 was released. As with other linksys routers, installation was a breeze. I use more than 15 networked items in my house. Using the included software to do the setup is very simple and straight-forward. Linksys really got it right with this model. This router is super fast compared to the netgear 3700. The NAS input for a USB storage devices is about 10 times as fast and the 5ghz band works better in my house on the E4200 than on the 3700.Range on the 2.4ghz band is great. I can pick up signal on my laptop two houses over. It is nice when you are at a neighbors house and are able to use your own internet connection at a decent signal strength. The 5gz band is not quite as strong but I was still able to pick it up one house over. For me, as long as I can sit poolside in the far back portion of my yard and get a strong signal, that is all that matters.I recommend this router to anyone who is looking to get the most up to date technology in a beautiful package.Only negative for me is the price point. I think we all have to suffer because of Cisco's huge margin requirements..
