I just purchased a 660U scanner. After a 20 minute trial I decided to return it and get my money back. It takes 6 minutes (yes six minutes) to scan a single negative in high res mode. This is absolutely useless

I purchased this scanner for the 35mm negitive scanning. I wasn't disappointed. I setup the machine, installed the software and was up and running scanning negitives in about 30 Minutes. Very nice negitive scanning at 1200x1200 for the price ( I was not interested in purchasing a 400.00 film scanner). Photo scanning was simular in quality. Overall a good product.The only thing from making it a 5-Star was the time it took toscan negitives was about 3 minutes though it seemed like forever.

This scanner is absolutely unbelievable. When it came out of the box, I was surprised to see that it really is just slightly larger than a pad of paper. Following the very simple directions, I plugged it into my USB port, ran the included software CD, and that was it - I was up and scanning in maybe 10 minutes! The scans themselves look terrific, even at 75 dpi. When I scanned one picture at the maximum resolution (1,200 x 2,400 dpi) just to see what it would look like, it almost came out too well - it picked up my fingerprint and an eyelash on the glass! With limited space on the computer desk, I especially like the stand that comes with this scanner, allowing you to store (and to actually scan with) the unit on its side, like a thin paperback book on your shelf. The software that comes with it is excellent as well - it includes Adobe Photoshop 5.0 Limited Edition, Omni Page Pro (for optical character recognition, to turn your scanned documents into text files for use in your word processor), and Photo Studio. All work seamlessly with the scanner, popping up automatically just when you need them.Other great features about this scanner include the fact that it does not need its own power source (it gets its power from the USB plug), and that the lid is hinged in such a way as to allow you to scan thicker objects and books. The price is terrific too, being a good bit lower than that of many other bulky scanners offering much less resolution.A few days ago I did have to call the Canon Customer Service number once, at midnight (I was surprised to hear a real human answer the phone). A nice Customer Service rep helped me very quickly. He didn't even laugh when I discovered that my problem was that I had accidentally knocked loose the USB plug connecting the scanner to the computer! (Uh, must've been the cat....) :)It is a very nice surprise in this day and age when you feel that you actually get more than you pay for. Thank you Canon!

I just got this scanner a few hours ago and have scanned several images since I got it out of the box. I just had to stop scanning and write a review.First of all, I was surprised when I saw the box, the box which the Canon N1220U arrived in is smaller then the Canon scanner I replaced. The only reason I replaced the other Canon scanner is because I purchased a new computer and the older scanner wouldn't connect to my new computer. This scanner is small, hardly no larger than the scanning area (8.5" x 11.7"). It is also thin (about an inch and a quarter high) and looks quite nice next to the new G4 PowerMac. It really makes the older scanner look like a dinosaur and the older scanner is just a little more than a year old.Secondly, this scanner was so easy to set up, it virtually did it itself. All I had to do was to plug in the USB cable while the computer was on, there is no power cord to plug in, the power is actually supplied by the USB cable. Then I had to insert the CD which contained the set up software and click a few buttons, that was it.I was off and scanning in no time, maybe ten minutes tops. The first scan took a little extra time because the scanner had to calibrate itself, but it only does this once and you can re-calibrate the scanner anytime you want to. The scanner is quite fast, faster than the one I replaced.The software supplied to operate the scanner is fairly easy to use and understand. The scans turn out great, better than the original image it seems. I did have to adjust the way I place the image on the flatbed, the image should be placed upside down not rightside up. My first scan came out upside down.To sum up, the scanner looks great, doesn't take up much space on the desk, doesn't add to my power cord clutter behind my desk, it is pretty fast, easy to set up and use, and comes with useful third party software: PhotoShop 5.0 LE ( I use this program often), ArcSoft Photo Studio, ArcSoft PhotoBase, and ScanSoft Omni Page. I would recommend this scanner, even to my best friends.

Beware before buying!!! I purchase this scanner a little over a year ago. It broke down in four months. After 4 one hour phone calls to thier tech. line, long distance (customer pays), they couldn't solve the problem. Then after dealing with customer service and another 4 phone calls they finally replaced the scanner. Four months later again.... it broke. Several more phone calls to thier tech. center and 5 letters to the customer service and CEO they finally replaced it again. WARNING- do not buy this scanner without an extended warrenty. I have had nothing but grief with it and Canon's represenitves!!!! They are now refunding my money in full! However I have spent countless hours on the phone, writing letters, trips to the post office for shipping, buying uneeded parts they recomended, and money, to recieve the help required!

This is an excellent scanner for the money. Good speed. Clear pictures. Elegant looks. Film scanning is a great feature.But, don't expect the installation to be as easy as others say. I took more than an hour to make it work on my new Windows Me PC. Did everything as per the quick installation guide and the scanner wouldn't work. The scanner would make some noise and an error message would say something like "Cannot communicate with scanner. Check the cables".Then I found the "Driver Update" CD in the pack. (There was no mention about it in the installation guide). It is not mentioned anywhere on this CD why this update is required. Anyway, after I installed whatever is on this CD, the scanner started working. But the film scanning still wouldn't work. I got some error like "Can't determine TWAIN properties". Then, I went to Canon's website and downloaded the driver and the scanning Toolbox programs and everything worked.I would suggest you directly go to Canon's website and download the 3 files (Driver and 2 Toolbox programs for sheet and films scanning) instead of using the CD's that come with this scanner.Be warned that negative Film scanning is very very slow and is not as clear as scanning a print. It is to be used only if you don't have the print.

I've just started scanning film, and after setup, this scanner is very simple to operate. However, if you are either inexperienced with installing hardware and/or software, or are looking to scan slides, I would suggest a different scanner. Personally, I believe a flatbed with a film scanning adapter is comprable in quality.I do have Windows 2000, and managed to get this scanner working on it, although it claims it doesn't have the components to install the driver on my OS. But that's definitely not something you want to deal with, if you can help it.You need to have photo editing software to adjust the scans properly. It sometimes has the tendency to turn out a little orange.Software included: Acquisition program, Adobe Photoshop Limited Edition (an extremely LIMITED edition), Presto! PhotoAlbum, Presto! Mr. Photo (basically, to arrange your personal photos- I did not install them, so cannot recommend).

I am speaking from personal experience not based on the quality of the scanner. I used this scanner with a computer that using WIN XP and the installation was a great headache. The installation took 2 days just to come out the right way and when it was already installed the scanner will not work with WIN XP. I've 3 scanners before and this has been the most frustrating installation yet.I tested the scanner with another computer that uses WIN 98 and installation was very easy.In conclusion, if you have WIN XP and you try buy this scanner your doing so at your own risk.

2 problems kept this from getting 5 stars, sadly both could have been avoided. First, don't even try to use the drivers on the CD-Rom just go straight to their web site and download the newest drivers. This is not mentioned anywhere in any of the literature I received with the unit. Also, my first unit (which I returned) had the grey film on the underside of the glass aas well as little plastic filings that I could not see until the internal lamp came on. Aside from those 2 problems, which Canon's quality control team should have caught, it is everything I was looking for in a home scanner at a great price.

I love this scanner. I went from a SCSI that was 3ft long, 8 inches deep, and 2 feet wide, to this laptop sized USB scanner and haven't looked back. It opened up so much space on my desk, I added a TV! My only two issues (both minor)are with the scanning DPI and the page size supported. The DPI is locked at multiples of 75, which I found interesting when trying to do scans of halftones. The only other issue is that it is limited to 8 1/2 x 11 inch originals. I would have loved to seen it able to take legal size.It would be 5 star if these items we added.The exposure is perfect from edge to edge, software works great. It took me longer to get it out of the packaging than to set up. A friend need to scan some photos and I sat him down (he's computer illiterate) and within minutes he was scanning like a pro.

This is a great little scanner. And I do mean little; I was simply amazed at the small size of the unit. In fact, I have taken it on a couple road trips. In addition to the size, the fact that it only requires the USB cable is a real boon. Power is supplied via the USB port so I only needed one cable for power and signal. Too cool. And this worked perfectly with either the Mac G4 Cube or iceBook that I have. And despite what I had read, I found it to be realtively quiet. Certainly it is a vast improvement over my ancient Microtek unit. Incredibly portable, fairly rugged, great images -- it's just a real gem.The Software is also simple and pretty powerful. I love being able to start a scan by pressing the button on the scanner OR from within the software. That's hardware integration that works! With the included Photoshop LE, I was able to monkey around with some photographs and get just sterling results. The included OCR software is good, but I find that given its limited accuracy I am better off (read that as meaning that it is quicker with less input from me) just doing a quick scan of class notes and keeping them in that format. I knew that my old scanner was well past its prime, but I am pleasantly pleased at how much things have improved. I highly recommend this scanner.

DO NOT GET THIS SCANNER IF YOU HAVE WIN 2000.......I have this scanner it does a good job and all works perfect on Win98, however if you have Win2000 its a waste of time to own this thing. I'm very upset I didnt research this thing before I bought it. Canon has drivers for Win2000 but they dont work at all. I may add that there support cost's money and they give you no imput. Otherwise if you dont have Win2000 I would say its pretty good. I have now a spearate PC just for this thing with Win98 on it. There are probably better scanners out there. This thing takes pretty long to scan a single negative at maximum reseloution. And I have found that Kodak color negative's does not scan as nice as Fuji will with this scanner. But it does work good if your scanning any slides. I hope this is helpful to you........I would say get a different one.

Don't buy a D660u. A week ago I bought (from Amazon) a new Canon D660u. After I hooked it up I noticed that the underside of the glass had grime on it and needed to be cleaned. An email from Canon in response to my question asking how to clean the underside of the glass, I was told that it is not consumer serviceable and needs to be forwarded to a warranty station. An email to Amazon brought a VERY prompt reply and an offer to Air Express a replacement unit or issue a refund. The second one arrived in two days and is just as contaminated. Looks like a grimey gray wavey film on the bottom of the glass that simply needs a two second cleaning. What a shame that this simple that task is not something Canon thinks ever needs to be done. I'll be returning this one too (at Amazon's expense). I sure like dealing with Amazon, though. They're number one in my book. Canon on the other hand, sucks.

Had another scanner for years it died. I bought the cannon, had it for 3 hours, scanned two pictures, and when I pushed the button for the third, the scan function was lost forever. Reloaded the software worked for an hour and the scan function was lost again. When it did scan the colors reproduced were not natural with any setting recommended. Had an old scanner that did a job 10 times what this cannon did. Yes it is very thin and compct, but when running it sounds like there are two mice in the box running the gears. You may love it but if you had a scanner that worked every day with out any problems. I would not recomend this unit to anyone. sorry for the bad rap. but a new scanner should work correctly for more than 3 hours. In the box and back to where it came. in all fairness i must say that it was very easy to install with the usb port. And if not for this it would be a real pain to reinstall after the scan function was lost. Love the ease, hate the operation. sorry to be so down on the unit but I had to write it my way

My first experience with a Canon scanner was horrible. No response was received from Canon after 2 inquiries about a seemingly defective scanner. (Thank-god for Amazon customer service!)Despite the problems, I rolled the dice on another Canon and am pleased with it. The 660U scans reasonably fast; the picture quality is nice and the film scanner is a fantastic bonus. Hookup was a snap (Windows ME didn't even crash!) and the scanner has performed flawlessly since.The purchase of any Canon scanner over the web would seem to be a significant risk due to the lack of support from Canon. It is simply a pain to have to keep shipping things regardless of who is footing the bill. If you get one that works, you'll be happy with this one.

This is simply a miserable piece of equipment. I own a Mustek 1200 ED and I purchased the Canon for the negative and slide scanning feature and at 1200 dpi (from negatives) it produced terrible quality in comparison to my Mustek, and the Mustek will not even scan negatives. There was indeed a greasy film on the inside of the glass bed, and the normal scanning of prints produced terrible quality images as well. Don't waste your time if you are planning on scanning anything worthwhile.

As another reviewer said, right, you may not install this thing in Windows 2000 successfully with normal installation process. First of all, you should get something like ASPI driver for your SCSI card, install it. Then let Windows 2000 treat your scanner as an other/unsupported device while Windows 2000 detect it automatically. After that, install the utility come with this product or downloaded from support site. It should work then although Windows 2000 always see it as an other/unsupported device in device manager.Except this strange behavior, it is good but slow.

It's got a nice form factor; sleek look; is easy to connect. I spent several hours trying to get this thing to work to no avail. Error messages kept popping up with instructions to unlock the mechanism that secures the scanning piece while in transit, unplug the USB connector, reconnect, and try again. Time and again it simply did not work.The online Canon documentation was useless, and attempts to contact Canon through the web site resulted in an auto responder and NEVER any assistance from a subsequent inquiry to Canon based on instructions in the auto responder.Technical problems aside, if you are looking for a (Canon) scanner primarily for web graphics and don't need perfectly flawless scans, you can cut the price tag in half if you get the Canon 650u or spend a few bucks more for the metallic finish of the Canon 656u.

This is a very good scanner, and the software bundle that comes with it is excellent in my opinion. However, the driver software is atrocious. I have original USB ports, a 4:1 USB expander, and a USB add-on card, all of these give the driver fits locating and then running it.

Had it working in about 5 minutes out of the box with WIN-98 and on-board USB connection. No driver problems with WIN-98 unlike a previous reviewer had with WIN-ME.The color negative and slide (film) scan feature are what really sells this scanner for the price. The film scans are a bit slow at 1200 dpi but worth the wait. I was concerned about how well film scanner would work before I purchased it. Other "film" scanners cost hundreds of dollars. However, this product comes through with shining colors as a "film" scanner at this price. Yeah, freedom from slide trays.Normal picture and document scans are fast and push button simple!I sure hope CANNON keeps this concept of a low priced film/picture/document scanner alive.

What else would you want from a scanner? This little monster does everything that I need a scanner to do for me, be it scanning lowres graphics for websites to high resolution color scans for print media.The windows utilities are adequate, although I do not use them much as I use Photoshop and/or Fireworks for my scanning and editing. The scanner TWAIN driver's GUI is nice, in default mode it presents options for the novice to achieve clean good quality images, while in advanced/expert mode, it allows fine tuning of all the expected settings (hue, color, brightness, contrast) that you want.I agree with the other reviewers that one of the best non-technical things about this scanner is its lack of a powercord. For those who, like me, have a number of computers at their desk, various peripherals, and etc., having one less tenticle extruding from the electrical outlet is a GREAT thing. Additionally, the scanner's design is beautiful, sleek and as sexy as a scanner can be :)I have owned many scanners over the years (SCSI, Parallel, and USB) and this one is my favorite of them all.The only gripe I can think of is that at this time, there is no LINUX support for this scanner, but this will change (I assume) now that the 2.4 kernel is out and USB is fully supported :)

Hi folks This is my first scanner, and I found it excellent in every way. First, the installation was very fast and easy. I have Windows Me, and unlike some others have suggested, it loaded successfully on the first attempt. There are different installation instructions for Me than there are for older versions -- make sure you follow the right set.Jumping right in and scanning right away was absolutely easy. Use is very intuitive. Both the scanner's software and then the photo editing software open themselves up at the appropriate times. The photo editing software is PhotoStudio, which works a lot like Adobe PhotoShop. PhotoShop is ALSO included, by the way, but I find PhotoStudio totally sufficient for my needs.Another feature that I LOVE is that the scanner requires NO POWER SOURCE OF ITS OWN! If you are like me, you will welcome the fact that there is but one cord coming out of this scanner -- the USB cord which runs for the scanner to your PC. This makes for a tidier desk, and also I personally have no spare space in my power strip.The quality of the scans is wonderful. I am not an expert on the subject, but the scans look just as good as those I've made on scanners at Kinko's.I highly recommend this unit. Wonderful in every way.

I just got it (from Amazon... at a very good price, BTW), and I REALLY like it. I had a scanner from another manufacturer that just wasn't doing it (it was very buggy... the software wasn't communicating with the hardware, and it was noisy, slow, and complicated besides). So I researched what was out there and ordered the CanoScan, and I couldn't be happier. The size is incredible! Less than half the bulk of my old one. And after a very easy software load-up, I put a picture on the glass and pushed the single button on the unit. A very intuitive menu of icons popped up on the screen, and I clicked an icon that said "Save". The scanner ran (quickly and quietly) and that was IT! There was the picture in the file with no further tweeking needed. (I did end up tweeking the settings - very easy to figure out - so it would save as a JPG, and I specified another file for the pictures to go to). Haven't tried the OCR yet, but if it's as simple as scanning pictures, I'll be a very happy buyer indeed. So far, I'd say this is the best you can do in easy, reasonable-cost, ultra-SMALL scanners.

In 30 years of dealing with electronics, this was my personal low point for an unsatisfactory experience. I purchased this new, and I spent parts of three days trying to get it to work and it never did. I subsequently came across another review posted here that refers to a loose USB connection on the back of the scanner and believe that is what I experienced. I returned it for a refund as quickly as I could and purchased an Epson Perfection 1240U, an absolute 5-star experience.

I bought this scanner because of its low price and features. What I really wanted was a good basic level slide/negative scanning capability at the lowest cost, and this scanner fits the bill well. Nothing could be easier than setting up this scanner--took all of 10 minutes (from opening the box to plugging it all in to loading software to actually scanning an image). Operation is very simple--put photo on platen, push button, follow on-screen prompts. I've found the software packages very useful. Those looking for batch slide scanning will find no such capability here, and if you have a stack of negatives to go through, plan on taking some time. However, you can't beat the capability of this scanner for the money.Also, tracking my purchase through Amazon.com was excellent--all the info you could want about where in the pipeline your purchase is at any given moment. They said 5-7 days, it arrived in 3. Great Job.

If you can get past the installation problems that may crop up, this is one great scanner for the average person. It's easy to use and the resolution is excellent for what I intend to use it for. The biggest pluses are the small size and the absence of a separate power cord. The bundled software is easy to use and fairly intuitive. For most photos and documents, the resolution is excellent.On the negative side, I did have some problems during installation. The initial surge draws so much power from my standalone USB port, that it shut it down. I got around that by plugging the scanner in after booting up the port rather than leave the scanner plugged in. The installation documentation is also a bit sketchy and assumes that everything goes smoothly. If it doesn't, you're out of luck and left to trial and error. The website isn't much more help either.

I bought this scanner a couple of days ago and I just recieved it today. The setup and installation was easy and simple, and the design was sleek. You can save desk space by using the stand to mount the scanner vertically. Under normal and low DPI, the scan takes a few seconds. However, when scanning at 1200 DPI, the highest setting, scanning can take quite a while. I started scanning about 10 minutes ago, and it is still scanning as I type. Fortunately, you rarely have to scan at such a high resolution. Overall, the Canon N1220U is a vast improvement over my old scanner; an Hp SaP ScanJet 5200C, which is about four times as large and ten times as fuzzy. I highly recommend you buy this product.

I have a Macintosh PowerBook G3 Series which has two USB ports. I asked for and got the N1220U for Christmas in 2000. So far it's been great. I won't rehash much of what others have said, only to add that the USB-powered design allows you to use it on a laptop while running on batteries. In fact, to try it out, I loaded the drivers from the Canon website into my PowerBook and took it to a retail store to do a scan right there. Plus, it's dimensions are such that I can fit it in my laptop bag with the laptop. The only minor qualm is the manual lock switch -- it would be nice to have this automatic (but probably at the expense of consuming more power).By the way, the USB drivers for Macintosh work great. I primarily use the plug-in with the [separately available] shareware program GraphicConverter but the scanner can also be used with the provided software and works in Adobe PhotoShop.I just wish I had these cool toys when I was in college.

Software is very good. The scanner is good for the price, but it's a little slow and the quality leaves a little bit to be desired. But for under $..., this is a very good buy. If you have 300 for a scanner, go for an epson with a film adapter, it's much faster, and has better scan quality.

Having owned a few scanners, this one has dissapointed be because of its shallow depth of focus. It is absolutely useless for any magazine articles or objects with any texture. I think we are talking submillimeter DOF. I'd like to send it back but put some wear on it. Other aspects of use are ok, though I find I need an AC adapter for my USB system when I use this scanner with my AC powered notebook computer.

I run windows ME (DELL Dimension 4100). I have spent 10 hrs trying to install this scanner. I have spoken to Canon respresentatives as well. I am not sure if its my USB port. But, the port works fine with a printer or a cable modem. May be it requires more current.I am almost giving up. May be I'll try getting a powered USB hub and see if it will work. Actually, I like the scanner. It looks cool and would love to see it work.Who knows, may be one of you might help me out.Note: I have tried 3 different scanners from 2 different manufacturers. None of them install under ME.

This scanner has everything you could want: good quality, good usability, good speed. However, tech support is lacking. The packaging states (in small type) that this model does not support the use of a USB to PCI add-on card. My parents purchased this system because it was recommended to them, but they did not understand the difference between an add-on card and 'native' USB support. And the documentation does little to clarify this restriction for inexperienced users. For that matter, their technical support website and phone support did not address this issue either. If you had to purchase an upgrade card to enable your system to communicate with USB devices, then this system is NOT for you!!

This scanner has been a delight, making better quality scans, at greater speed than other much more expensive and unwieldy scanners I have used. It is light enough to travel with my laptop, and conveniently even has moire reducing settings in it's software, making my ability to scan old copyright expired fashion illustrations easier, with better, faster results.

This is the Perfect Scanner! I have it installed on a Compaq PC with Windows ME, installation was a breeze! Scanned in (at medium quality) a picture I had professionally enlarged about a year ago, printed it out (also at medium quality) using the included cannoscan software, I can NOT tell the difference! My homemade picture is suitable for framing! I highly recommend this scanner!

This scanner was a replacement for my Mustek 1200 that I had recently bought and was dissatisfied with the quality of output. The Canon D660U, though not as fast as the Epson Expression 636 I use at work, has better output quality. This scanner is PERFECT for my home and business needs. The ability to scan 35mm slides and negatives is an added plus. Although I still use Adobe Photoshop to edit all my graphics, the software that comes with the D660U is every bit as good. The included Ceare Omnipage OCR software is top notch. This is an easy to use, high quality scanner package that everyone should be happy with.

This is my 3rd scanner, and they keep getting better. This one is a quantum leap ahead of the last generation, with its USB connectivity leading the list of advances. There is no need for an independent power source, so anyone can install this scanner in minutes. The software is easy and fun, and most importantly, intuitive. I read no directions, but was able to complete my 1st (beautiful) scan 10 minutes after I opened the box. This attractive and diminutive scanner is a winner!

It took me all of 10 minutes to hook this scanner to my Mac and install all the software. I really appreciate the lack of a power cord and the slim sleek design. An included clip lets you stand the scanner on its side, so it takes up essentially no desk space. You can even scan in that position. The software has worked flawlessly and the choices of image editing software allows you to do pretty much whatever you want to the scans. I just tested the OCR software, and it too worked quite well, making only a few mistakes, primarily mistaking numbers for letters.

This is a great scanner. I had it out of the box and was using it in under 10 minutes. Great scans - my mom (who is not very technical) finds it easy to use and is scanning in old pictures; the scans are highly detailed - to the point you can't tell the difference between the actual picture and the scan. Scanner has some real advantages - one cable for both USB and power. The scanner can also be mounted vertically, which saves more space (it takes up little space to begin with). Works great with MicroSoft ME.

having nothing but trouble trying to scan black and white or text, skimpy instruction sheet is of no help. have talked to two Canon tech people who act like they never saw a scanner. Basically a nice rig if I could get my problems solved.

If you want get picky, it only handles letter size, no legal, the lid extends only 1" (can't scan a large book) and is a little on the noisy side. But weigh that against the Canon's elegant and functional design, true PnP, great software (though I'm still looking for my "included"PhotoShop LE) and a happy double-take on the price, and it's no wonder Amazon's sometimes out of stock.

Regarding the canoscan 1200U-it does not load any better on Windows 98. We purchased 5 days ago and when after installing, it will not work. We have installed and reinstalled many many times. I would not recommend the canon product because they refused to provide technical support for their product unless I call a long distance number. No one should have to pay for support for a NEW PRODUCT. This is ridiculous! 1 star because I couldn't put a zero. HP Scanners are no better.

I have used the FS2710 for over a year and find it to be the best for the money IMHO. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is the 3.2 Dymanic Range. I have used the scanner to scan litterally hundreds of slides, both mounted and in strips, without any problems what-so-ever. The scanner was simple to install, the software works flawlessly. All of my images on my site were made with this scanner. Instead of just taking someones word for it, look and judge for yourself.

This scanner is very definitely a five star item. We tried out many scanners. Some came with software that was difficult, or confusing in instructing the operator to use.If time is any consideration some seemed to poke along.Some were quick but the images produced were not always clear. Some scanners were noisy. Some bulky. This little baby is thin, sleek,easily portable,quick, and the 42 bit gives one excellent reproduction. If one has a digital camera, I think that is an especially important consideration.
