I've only used work-related scanners for a long time, and these were big high-end models that had their own power source. I didn't expect this Canon to be as fast or have as a good color fidelity from the outset, but certain design aspects impressed me quite a bit <-- disclaimer for why I went so crazy with so many customer-submitted pictures. Hmmm, After submitting the pics, I realized that the flash demo on the amazon page is pretty darn good.Anyways:1)The USB powered scanner is quite useful in that it's only powered when plugged into the computer. There is no power button, but all you have to do is unplug it from the computer, and it's off. Bootup/warm up time is quite fast. Just plug into your computer, start the included software or Photoshop, and import/acquire.2)It does scan a little slower than the power scanners I'm used to, but it does the job.3)I remember awhile back an HP version of a tilted scanner (Scanjet 4600 series), and I wasn't too impressed by its scanning quality nor its functionality. The "upright" function, I thought, was a gimmick, and not very useful. But now I find that for things I want to scan quickly, a page at a time, I can just slide it in and scan.4)The included film adapter is very substantial. It has its own light source, in comparison to other scanners which give you a slot/hole to shine light out of. A substantial/separately mounted film adapter piece ensures that the background of the scanner is a nice even white as well. On some of these other scanners, you see ridges from the plastic moldings that double up for the negatives.5)I am just soooo impressed by the design for the stand and the multi-angle lids. The option of changing the angle of the lid WHEN you want to is a godsend.6)the lids and the negative film adapter are held in place with magnets. This is great, as lids and adapter will come off and attach easily, without the wear-and-tear imposed upon plastic latches.7)I have been forever turned off by Epsons, as they are notorious for not updating their drivers for new OSs. I remember trying to update an Epson from Win2K to WinXP, and I just could not do it. Bye bye Epson.8)I've tried the negative scanning once, and although a little on the slow side, (1200 dpi), the resulting image was quite good.I think this is a great scanner for home usage, and even for perhaps small businesses. Of course, it doesn't have a feed tray, nor is it the fastest scanner out there, but its design and portability (there's a large lock button on the bottom to secure moving parts during transport) as well as its functionality deserves it 5 stars in my book.

This was my first scanner purchase. I needed a scanner to digitize my photographs and also some documents through OCR. This scanner is worth the price, and certainly does the above satisfactorily. The accompanying OCR software is reasonable, but don't try to OCR handwritten documents, no matter how clear and legible they are.I haven't used the accompanying software for scanning, I use the scanner from within GIMP, and it works wonderfully. It is not the fastest scanner I have seen (a preview + actual photo scan takes about a minute). The scanner is also a bit noisier than I expected, but its not too bad.Overall well worth the price.

This scanner works with my company furnished laptop under XP Pro service pack 2. It does not work with my Mac-mini under OS X 10.5.2 which is why I bought it. When I go to the Canon website it gives me the Mac download for OS 10.5.2 but it fails to install. When I called Canon Tech Support they said it was a Apple problem and that I had to become a "root" user to install it! That also did not work. They then said it was Apple's operating systems fault!!The problem is the Twain driver is not recognized by the Mac OS. I had never had any problems with other thirdparty software installing. I do know Canon did not write this for Apple's Universal binary which OS X likes and uses. I cannot recommend this to Apple users until Canon fixes this Twain driver issue.

I purchased and promptly returned a CanoScan LiDE 25. I was seeking only a basic scanner of good quality that would be relatively simple to operate. This item is low in the Canon line but I guess I assumed the name Canon would assure a high level of quality nevertheless. I was disappointed. The LiDE 25 is a very light weight unit - literally. It is almost toy-like in its construction and it's capabilities - it produced below par scans for me. I was replacing a mid-line Epson 1670 but the Canon was in an entirely different league and in my opinion is just not a good investment when you realize for a few more dollars you can have one of several other "real" scanners. Not recommended.

I've been using this scanner for several weeks now and am very satisfied with it. The installation and setup was easy, and I had it up and running in less than a half hour. The only problem I've encountered is that some photos I scanned came out looking "stripey", but I solved this by using the "blur" filter in Photoshop. I'm pretty sure the Canoscan Toolbox includes a "blur" filter as well, since it is similar in many ways to Photoshop. This is a good scanner for basic, everyday use, and a great value for the price.

This thing makes a loud grinding noise while running that is unsettling. It makes me wonder how long it's going to last. But on the plus side it's very light weight, about the size of a large pad of paper, so you don't really need to devote a shelf or desktop space for it, you could even carry it somewhere if you wanted (except for the noise). I like it so far.

I am a private user with no Cannon affiliation. This is a fine product that I hope lasts for years. The scanner and software are a tremendous value for the money. While this is not a full blown professional scanner it is great for what it was made for: getting printed data onto your computer quickly, easily, and cheaply while substituting somewhat for a copy machine and doing some graphics work. The included CanoScan Toobox software makes the scanner do simple functions with ease.Copy Timing & Quality: I love the copy directly to printer function. You can shrink and enlarge by 25% to 400% or custom % size. The 75-300 dpi setting works fine but the 600 dpi copy function locks up my system and is too slow and the files are too big for my liking anyway - a switch to the HP print language driver away from the HP postscript driver on my HP4500 color laser printer seems to have fixed this problem. For most quick copy non critical uses the fast 150 dpi setting is fine though text picks up a slightly "blocked up" or "bold" look with fat edges. 300 dpi gives a more normal looking copy. A 150 dpi scan to "copy" in color (color scan looks better even for black and white images in my experience) takes about 15 seconds from start to being dropped on my print spooler. A 300 dpi takes about 30 seconds. Reasonable times compared to most cheap home copiers I've used but not blazingly fast. You have to add your printer's print time to get the total time to make a copy. The copy quality is almost up to a regular copy machine but not quite unless maybe you spend time tweaking the settings. There is a tendency to get a slightly gray rather than white margin with the 150dpi copy that seems to go away on the 300 dpi copy. This could also be due to a smaller bulb in this small scanner verses the larger bulbs in normal copy machines. As I say with some adjustments to the software and at 300 dpi it usually goes away but I just want to automatically copy without adjustments. Buy a dedicated Cannon copy machine if that is what you need and they are reported to me to be better than other brands during this time of "sell it before it brakes" trash office products that are presently available in the mass selling office stores.File Size: The scan to "copy" function has a jpg file that is rather large and might print slow on some systems. I wish I could adjust the jpg quality level to my desires in speed and quality. 150dpi color gets a decent, fast, scan to printer for a quick copy function and size of about 5-6 meg, 300 dpi is half as fast (makes sense) and much larger in jpg (20-24 meg). The 24 meg is a slow print even from my postscript HP 4500 color laser. The scan to "file" (pdf) makes smaller files maybe only 10% of the size of jpgs from the "copy" function in my experience. The pdf is more efficient. The scan to "email" jpg file function uses a more compressed version of jpg that makes a good looking mailable image and allows you to limit the max size of the scanned file. This is of great help to speed emails and get them through servers that don't allow large files. It also will save the file in a folder so you can use this small size jpeg for other uses. The ArcSoft program is needed to get to 1,200 dpi since the CanoScan tool box maxes out at 300 to 600 dpi depending on options. This is okay since scanning is slow past 300 dpi anyway and the files get big.To copy newsprint: Try Grayscale scanning and lighten up the adjustment a bit.Physically: The buttons on the front are reassignable but I don't know why you would want to. They are too hard to read from their low position. Click on CanoScan's "Settings" function to see what they do and to reassign. The top has a flimsy but adequate hinge. The "turn it on the side" attachment is a joke, since HP tried this others follow, but to position correctly you will want the scanner on a flat surface so you can press the top down on the print or magazine, don't delude yourself into thinking that a flat top scanner needs no space. It is not made to scan film negatives or slides. I tried both and it just won't. Stick to paper and printed pictures.Install on windows XP was simple. I have a USB connection straight off my modern (made within the last 2 years) Intel motherboard and have not had USB problems as others have commented. You might need the Service Pac 2 XP update. In my experience, when scanning is happening, I can't do anything else, that is I can't use other software or operating system functions, if I do Windows XP will lock up and I have to restart. To beat this scanner you have to spend more money like for a medium line Epson Photo scanner and then you would not have the convenient copier business software according to reports that I've read. It is not a full substitute for a copy machine but is fine for most home users. Professional OCR scanners costing thousands of dollars scan faster and use about 200 to 250 dpi as a standard scan so in the scanner world the 150 to 300 dpi for a

This is a really nice, compact scanner. Scans well, a little slow but not too bad for the price and the small size. The only trouble I have with it (and this may be a problem with my PC) is my computer will not boot with the scanner plugged in. It only draws 500ma and is plugged into a powered hub, so it shouldn't be a bus power problem.Anyway, I mostly use it for on-line bank deposits, and it works great for that. I haven't tried scanning anything else other than line art and documents, and does a perfect job with those. I haven't tried scanning a photo yet, but my guess is that it will be so-so for that use.

I had a Mustek 1200CU scanner with which I was satisfied, but I've got a new computer with Windows Vista and Mustek simply is not releasing drivers for that scanner. I don't scan as often as I used to, however I do need to scan occasionally and I decided all I needed was the Canon LiDE 25. I'm happy to have made this choice. I received the later model which includes Vista drivers, however Vista drivers are readily available on Canon's website, so that really isn't an issue other than convenience. The LiDE 25 produces scans that are definitely better than the original photographs. My first scans were some, now slightly faded Polaroids from the early '70s and they are simply amazing. I don't find this scanner to be noisy at all as some reviews had indicated. The bundled software is actually pretty slick, including the OCR - and I find that I do like to scan text documents, so this was important to me. For the everyday user I would recommend this scanner whole-heartedly.

I already used the CANON LIDE50 on my DELL Inspiron with Windows XP Pro.It worked alright and for all the features on Windows read the other reviews, as they are quite detailed in my opinion. The scanner works, it scans, could be a little more userfriendly on the toolbox interface, but especially the assignment of scanbuttons to certain programs or filetypes is fully functional and working, after getting used to the configuration. However, I have virtualized my windows machines and have them running now on a MACBOOK with an intel dual core 2 GHz and 2 GB RAM, with MAC OS X ( 10.4.9 ), using vmwares' fusion beta.Starting up the scanner even in (virtual) windows, the scanner gets found, whether on an USB hub or directly attached to one of the USB 2.0 Ports. The Toolbox finds it and I can scan just as on my real Windows machines. Now, after installing the Canon Driver on the Macbook (b3B12enx.bin) and the toolbox (toolbox_s4103enx.bin) as described in the installation manual, I can happily find the scannerdriver in the import menue in photoshop, even the toolbox discovers the driver , but after i click SCAN, the error is "Cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected. Check Status. Scanner Driver will be closed."Now, this is one of the error messages I am used to see from windows , so I suspect this error comes from the unsuccessful programming of the canon driver for MAC OS.I even suspect, Canon hasn t taken the time to INSTALL THE SCANNER ON A MAC THEMSELVES.As I am now doing most of my work on the mac, I will sell the scanner here. anyone wants to have it, send a mail. Shock and horror was my conclusion after reading the countless reviews from previous flatbed scanner purchasers who bought from Canon, Epson, HP and others. How could my limited computer skills possibly solve the described problems, I wondered? Being extra cautious, I resolved to buy from Amazon, who promised a 30-day refund policy.Based on total satisfaction with my Canon Powershot S50 camera and my Canon i960 photo printer, I chose the LiDE 600F scanner, which seemed to have fewer negative reviews. And a wise choice it proved to be.Connection of the single USB cable and software installation were a breeze, yielding excellent printed scans in less than a half hour. The installation wizard handled the chores perfectly on my Dell E520 with Windows XP Media Edition. My sympathies go out to anyone with installation problems who didn't buy an LiDE 600F.Then there is the extremely clever ultra-thin case design. The cover handles single sheets or a stack of pages and objects up to about one inch thick, or it folds back to accommodate books and magazines. Alternatively, the stand-up bracket permits operation of the scanner in a nearly vertical position to conserve desktop space. The equally clever software is well suited to simple push button scanning and copying for dummies, as well as advanced modes for a variety of selectable image enhancements. For me, its biggest plus is the ability to launch a scan with Photoshop (File>Import) and have the scan returned directly to a Photoshop canvas for editing or filing (an unadvertised but most pleasant bonus). The machine's only apparent shortcoming is its inability to handle mounted 35 mm transparencies.Coupling all this with the excellent scan quality and speed for printed pages and 35 mm negatives, the LiDE 600F has proven to be a dream machine, far exceeding my pre-purchase expectations and hopes for a successful scanner experience. It's hard to imagine anyone being disappointed with the LiDE 600F, provided you don't need to scan 35 mm slides or large volumes of negatives. Thanks, Canon, you got it right this time.

Does an excellent job on black and white stuff, a bit hazier on lighter colors like blue and red. Also, not the fastest gizmo on the block, especially at higher resolutions, but, hey, I didn't expect Ferrari speed for a compact price. All in all, I'd recommend this to the light/moderate user.

I bought this scanner for its ability to scan text. I work for a newspaper and need to use it quite often. It is far better at recognizing characters than the scanner I previously used at work. It takes a little longer to scan a page, but it scans documents the old scanner would have turned into a jumbled mess. Though I read reviews complaining about the noise this scanner makes, I find that it actually makes less noise than the one I used at work.I would give it five stars but it does a few things which annoy me. Sometimes while scanning a window will pop up to ask if I want to upgrade the software. I've yet to find an option to make it stop doing that. There are times when I'll scan a page and it finds an error and will refuse to copy more than a paragraph into a word document. I end up having to rescan the page from that section down. Rescanning is also an issue as each time I scan a new page, I have to close Omnipage or allow several of them to open when reusing the same window would be more efficient. All in all, it's a great scanner for the price. I use it to scan multiple documents about three times a week and I'm glad it bought it. Sure beats having to type everything!

I've had the CanoScan LiDE 600F for about a month now, and I've been very impressed. It replaced my old Canon scanner that didn't survive a move - so I was looking for similar functionality. I LOVE the fact that it draws power from it's USB cord - I wouldn't have considered it if it didn't. The footprint isn't bad, either, especially if you keep it on it's stand (that is, scanning vertically). Also, the fact that it's a USB 2 connection makes it much faster than previous scanners that I've had (only USB 1), so it zooms through a scan even at higher resolutions (I only top out at 600 dpi). But the best feature of all is the cover that opens a full 180 degrees! I scan a lot of illustration boards that are 14"x17", so that makes things much, much easier.I'm a Mac user - and I agree with previous reviews that the included software is a bit disorienting for those used to more "Mac-like" apps. But, it does the job. I mean, how much time do you really spend in the scanning software? It was essential for me that I could scan directly from within Photoshop, and the plugin that comes is straightforward and flexible. Very nice. I don't use much in the way of "image enhancement" (I'm a PS junkie), so I can't tell you if any functionality is missing there. Also, the OCR software that is included is pretty decent. A little unintuitive, but performs well.In summary: if you're looking for a fast, flexible scanner that has a small footprint, USB power, and you're using it just to capture images that you will edit yourself later anyway, this scanner is damn near perfect.

I lost virtually all printed photos from my first 25 years of life in a freak flood about 12 years ago, at a time when the digital photography we take for granted today was nothing more than a dream.I bought this scanner to (i) digitise surviving negatives and prints such that I will never suffer the same fate again, whether due to flood or fire or other catastrophe, and (ii) ensure I have high quality scans of ultrasound images of my daughter to be, for the same reason. So to my first use of the scanner, negatives from what may transpire to have been a once-in-a-lifetime trip to south-east Asia. One of the shots was of a Bangkok Airways De Havilland Dash-8 landing at Samui airport (the aircraft I was about to step onto to return to Bangkok for an onward flight to Kuala Lumpur). The negative was obviously significantly flawed, and not at all pleasing to the eye as a consequence. I used all corrective options in the supplied ArcSoft software to correct those flaws, then printed the corrected scan on my Canon i9900 printer. The flaws in the image were gone and the print exceeded the quality of the original.Onto my second use -- ultrasounds. I had scanned images of the early ultrasounds using an HP 7130xi AIO, and been very dissatisfied with the quality of those images and of the i9900 prints I created from those scans. I used the 8600F to scan those very same images. The improvement in quality from the HP 7130xi to the 8600F is an order of magnitude improvement. Moreover, I am thrilled that I did not spend more on a higher-end scanner because when printed at 6 x 4, I cannot see how image quality could be improved.I cannot say anything about the medium format or slide scanning capabilities of this scanner, but for negatives and prints the quality is outrageously good for the price paid. This product represents fantastic value for money.

I've been using the Canoscan LiDE25 for over a year and a half...no mechanical problems. I use it primarily for scanning/storing text docs and for emailing & faxing.I bought it in 2005 when I got a new PC,finally upgrading from ME to XP. My old scanner was a Visioneer that I loved, but read that the old Visioneer driver could really screw up XP and that a new driver had to be downloaded (which included ~20 steps of installation instruction). A lot of reviewers said that they had system wide problems with the new driver as well...not worth the risk...so I looked for a replacement; the smallest, least expensive scanner on Amazon and ended up with the Lide25.ProsSize-wafer thin. Nice!Price-unbeatablePower supply-USB connection only with no need for an electrical outlet is a wonderful feature...frees up a slot in the powerstrip!Scans well-probably is not the fastest in the world, but quite acceptable for home use.Cons...I thought it was just me, but as other reviewers have indicated, the software has more whistles and bells than I need at the expense of simplicity. I really miss Visioneer's software that included a single desktop-type interface from where you could perform all filing, saving, editing, and secondary (fax/print/email) functions. If Canoscan has this capability, it is not readily apparent. If not for the needless complexity of the software I would give the product 5 stars.

Thousands of color slides taken during my sweet school days brought many wonderful memories. Unfortunately, most of them have been discolored, faded, spotted, or scratched. For years, I have set one of my retirement projects to be to restore some of those memorable pictures. And for several years, I have been waiting to see the price of Nikon CoolScan dropping, but it has not happened. With regard to this Canon scanner, I have initially been hesitating for a while as I really did not have confidence that flatbed scanner can cater for the high grain of slides. I have several flatbed scanners over the past years and none of them could give me satisfactory results on slides. Encouraged by positive reviews on this scanner, the affordable price, the reputation of Canon products, and most of all, my pleasant experience with Amazon purchases in the past, I decided to give this one a try.The product arrived on time in good condition as always with Amazon services. After one month of operation, I already scanned hundreds of slides and brought many of them to vivid conditions. With slides developed commercially some 50 years ago, the grains are not comparable to professional qualities. Therefore, I consider this scanner is more than adequate to digitize those color slides, positives, and grayscale negatives. My recent work proved this statement. I am totally satisfied with this scanner. If I have to pick a small concern, I believe the film guide looks to be a little flimsy. However, I think with careful handling, it should last for a long time, and hopefully until I will finish converting all my historical photos!

This seems to be a great little scanner, especially for the reasonable price. The pictures do not look very clear when I scan them so it is hard to figure out exactly what the printed picture will look like ; however, when I get the picture color right, it prints a very good picture.

The Scanner works perfectly fine, it picks up a good deal of details in pictures and works for my purpose, scanning old pictures to put into jpg formats. The one complaint I have is it's pretty loud. While it's actually scanning the photo it makes a good deal of noise, but it still does the job and does it well.

I bought this to scan 35 mm slides. Period. Opened it up, set it up, followed the instructions. Didn't work with slides. Tried it on two more computers. Still didn't work with slides. Studied and re-studied documentation (real men don't ask for directions). Kept getting error message saying that I should check for "protective sheet". Tried the internet and Canon web site for help, couldn't find what I needed. Finally broke down and called them. It seems that the "protective sheet" is a 1/4" + piece of hard black plastic with a piece of black foam attached and a white background on the whole thing--try sleeping on a sheet like that! After talking with the tech reps (all spoke perfect, understandable English) got it working. It does a great job, making old slides look like new (and I'm talking OLD--like 40 years old). It's a great low-cost high-function scanner that does the job that you may have to pay $1,000 for in a dedicated scanner--sure beats paying 50 cents to $1 to have each slide scanned by a service. The process is slow--does 4 slides at a shot and takes about 5 minutes to do the magic. The magic is just that--the scanner hums and whirrrs for many cycles but turns lead into gold (almost). This thing comes with a nifty slide carrier (in addition to raw film carriers and others) and does all sorts of other scanning tasks. I bought it only for the 35 mm slide thing so can't comment on other scanning abilities. All of this said, it's a great machine, well made, low cost, and does an excellent job.Amazon rocks, naturally. I did the free shipping thing yet got the machine only 1 day after ordering. I didn't check other prices but with Amazon service, who cares.

I love this scanner especially the "no ac adapter" part.It is easy to flip out and stow away. Also, I love the part where it sits at an angle and you can just slide a paper into it to be scanned. As far as quality, I am no graphics specialist but it does a superb job for documents and images alike.

I was skeptical when I saw this only cost $49, but it works great. Not very fast, but it does a good job on the scan. It also takes up very little space on my desk. I would recommend it.

I'm really happy with this scanner. It exactly meets my needs of being able to scan photographs and documents to be able to save them on my computer. I also love the "copy" feature that enables you to scan a document and immediately send the result to your printer to produce a copy. I only wish that it would also save an electronic version simultaneously. I also enjoy that it get its power via the USB port, eliminating the need for yet another cable. This is an inexpensive scanner that is perfect for casual home use.

I started off using this scanner with Windows XP, fow whoch it barely worked (the drivers and software were terrible). Then I bought a Mac, and the scanner was useless, as the drivers didn't work at all.I finally tried connecting the scanner to an Ubuntu (9, 10, 11+) machine running SANE drivers, and surprise -- it works flawlessly! So I'm now using it on a daily basis, six years later.

I bought this scanner to digitize about 500 old 127 format film slides which had faded over the years. The Canon product literature clearly states that this scanner will accept these slides. Well, the literature is incorrect, and the Canon tecnical representative admitted, to his surprise, that there was an error. 127 film slides are mounted in the standard 2x2-inch mounts, same outside dimensions as 35mm slides; however, the image is much larger than 35mm, being 40mm square (about 1.5 inches). When set up to scan slides, the CanoScan 8600 automatically crops the scan area to 35mm film size and cuts off much of the 127 slide image. The Canon tech rep was able to find a work-around that allows me to scan these slides at full image, but it is a rather crude way to do it, resulting in many more manual steps to accomplish the task. BUT, it does work after you get used to the process.By the way, I did not find any other scanner on the market that says it would scan 127 format slides. This scanner comes with Photoshop Elements 4.0 as well as other software. I also purchased the book "Photoshop Elements 5.0, The Missing Manual" by Barbara Brundage. If you are new to scanning, and especially if you are new to Photoshop as I was, I HIGHLY recommend that you buy this book. It literally holds you by the hand and guides you thru the steps to do whatever it is that you're attempting to do with your scanner. Elements does not come with an instruction book, only "on-line" help is available, and it is not easy to use because it assumes you already know how to use Photoshop Elements, which is very powerful, but also very complicated until you spend a lot of time with it. Buy the book, you'll be glad you did!

No instruction manual, a couple of paragraphs and I guess you are supposed to know how to use it. Help online answers questions that aren't understandable, if you could understand them you wouldn't ask the questions. No explanation of how to add a scan to a file or to email it. It's not intuative so I guess you need training(!) to operate it. I'd send it back and order another model but I'm afraid I'd get the same results. I checked at a local computer repair and he agreed figuring it out is not for the novice. Canon, be ashamed.......I guess I'll need training that cost more than your product.....

I'm a big fan of Canon products in general however this product really is making me rethink things. It gives decent image quality but is very noisy, slow, and causes strange computer issues. It draws so much power through it's USB cable that I have to unplug it from my computer before I boot up or else it will take an extra 10 minutes! I am not able to even use it with my USB hub because it draws more power than my total hub supports (which is ridiculous because I have no problem when the camera, card reader and mp3 player are simultaneously plugged into the hub and being used). I didn't find the software to be an issue. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. There are a lot of bundled products though and it may take a moment to read and follow instructions. A few years ago I got a free no-name scanner when I signed up for ISP service and I'd take it back over the Canon LiDE 25 in a heartbeat if only the software would run on XP.

The power supply on my hp5470C finally bit the dust, and this scanner doesn't cost much more than an HP power supply. plus, it's a lot more portable.i read the earlier reviews and was prepared for noise and slow speeds. i was pleasantly surprised.WRT noise, the scanner makes a noticeable mechanical whine when preview scanning at 150DPI. at 300 DPI or more, it's much quieter. i measured the sound output from about a foot away, and it's roughly 56 dB (A weighted). that's not loud.WRT speed, a full page is roughly 15 seconds at 300 DPI color. i tried scanning a dollar bill at 1200 DPI to get a feel for the resolution - the 1200 DPI scan took about a minute and a half, of just the bill.sharpness was excellent. i could zoom in on the engraving on the bill with very nice results. color was good, and sharpness was fine.on text scanning, i tried OCR'ing a page of the instructions that were written in small (about 6pt) type. the included ScanSoft Omnipage software got 100% accuracy.the three buttons on the front of the scanner were easy to configure, and worked very well. a high quality copy of a color photo came out very nicely, when printed directly to my HP inkjet.the form factor is great. it's about as thick as my hand, is roughly 14 3/4" x 10 1/4". weight is very light. it'd travel very easily in a briefcase or backpack, and i would have no compunction using it in a library (from a noise standpoint). it takes power from the USB cable, so would work very well w/ a notebook.overall, i'm extremely pleased with this purchase. it exceeded my expectations.

Fantastic!!! To use this scanner has been thrilling. I have been using 35mm SLR cameras since the 70's and have many slides and negatives. This scanner was purchased to digitize them. The results are excellent. Even though it will scan up to 2400 dpi, 800 dpi makes very pleasing pictures with files that are about 150k in size. Colors are brilliant and snappy. they look better than any other way that I have viewed them. The software that was encluded is easy to use and powerful. It helps to have some photography experience to know what some of the functions are. Sure beats using a darkroom. My favorite part of this software is the scratch removal, cropping features, exposure, and contrast altering. Quick & easy.At 800 dpi each slide or negative scan takes about 45 seconds. This scanner exceeds my expectations!

I had the 8400F at home and was pleased with it, so I bought the 8600F for work when I needed to scan in a bunch of graphics. For this job, I found it to be a really fast scanner. Both the preview and the final scan of the color graphics were speedy. Sorry, but I did not use the scanner to scan negatives, so I cannot comment on that. You can tell more about a company when something goes wrong than when everything goes right. The scanner I received had problems with streaking during the scans. I called Canon and got right through to tech support. They spoke English (meaning, it didn't sound like an overseas call center) and determined after 20 mintues that the scanner was bad. Two days later I received a brand new replacement that worked great. I highly recommend buying the Canon brand based on this experience.I have no regrets buying this scanner, but here are a few things that Canon could do to improve it:1) The USB cable was a tad short (about 4.5 foot). A 6-foot cable would have been better.2) The top of the "scan area" is by the hinge of the lid. That means you have to open the lid wide to put something in. For areas where you are limited in vertical space, it would be better if this were moved to the front of the scanner.3) The scanner cuts off just a hair along the edge of the item being scanned. The edges are how you keep an item "squared" on the scanner, yet 1mm or less along the edge was not included in the scan. The software that comes with the CanoScan is good, especially Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0, which is always rated well in the PC magazines. The CanoScan driver is flexible with plenty of options for the advanced user, as well as basic options for the not-so-advanced user.I expected a good quality scanner, and was surprised at the speed. I recommend the CanoScan 8600F to you.

Very easy to use with a simple user interface that should be good for the average non-tech user. Scans very well all the way up to the reported 1200dpi. You do have to look to find where to adjust the resolution. It is a little slower due to the fact that it has no power supply (which is a very good thing) and gets its power from the USB port which has limited available power. Be sure you have a "powered" USB port. The long-term reliability should be very good because it consumes so little power. I've always loved Canon products and have never been let down. Small, lightweight, cheap, low-power, well engineered, good software, 1200dpi resolution... What else do you want?

With the film scanner attachment door closed and turned upside down you will find 3 pairs of rubber tabs (I am assumming all LiDE 600Fs are the same as mine). These Rubber tabs allow you to hold 3 mounted slides in place while you turn the film scanner attachment over and place it on the scanning bed. From here scan as you would for film. Not the best for someone who has a lot of slides to scan in a hurry, thus I rate the scanner as a 4 instead of a 5Sorry made a mistake. The software is too smart. It looks for the gaps between frames to seperate files, and the mounts muck this up. Clearly the hardware designers and the programs had a laps in communication.
