I bought 3 of these because they are light weight, easy to pack, and scan quite well for class/office/on-the-fly!I plan on using my new one with my laptop for class. I can easily store it & hide it so you don't even know it's there. Hide it, you say? Yes! Because it stores between books & things in an upright position if necessary. And if hidden properly, people won't 'borrow' it & forget to give it back. This way, I don't have to hunt one down at work/school to use. It fits in most backpacks and it's a good scan for what you need. Fits easily in a 10x13 padded envelope or bigger. This way it will be overlooked and safe from prying hands & busy minds!! LOL!!Definitely makes a good gift & the price is right. I put this on my Gift List of things I don't have to think about. I can just buy it & know it won't end up regifted, in the trash, or the Salvation Army bin!!It's a keeper! Buy this you'll like it & you won't give it away!!

This Canon scanner works very well, is easy to use, runs off the USB port without a power cord and takes up very little real estate. I am very happy with it as well as my Cannon printer.

I purchased this scanner for my eleven year old son when we determined the expensive 98 scanner would not work with his Vista laptop. I was very impressed with the quality for the price. It is so easy to use and great with his Acer laptop. He loves to create things with the pictures he takes both for school and family. If I were scanner "smart" I would not hesitate to get one for my laptop but, I am still waiting for 35mm film to make a comeback!

I read the great reviews here (and elsewhere) on the LiDE 30, prompting me to buy the newer, faster 50. I have USB 2.0 ports and wanted the better performance ? and wasn't disappointed! The 50 can scan a full 8.5x11 color image in less than 30 seconds at 300dpi, including several seconds for the scan mechanism to reposition itself afterward. The optional "preview" was so fast it wasn't worth timing. My guess is 5 seconds or so for the above preview.I won't rehash all the nice features of this scanner since many of you have read the LiDE 30 reviews. It seems to be an LiDE 30 with impressive USB 2.0 Hi-Speed performance added. It's also capable of generating 48bit color output and 16bit monochrome output, whereas the liDE 30 is half that, not that this is really important. 24bit is 16 million colors and 281 trillion colors is something I don't relate to.Aside from speed, I was pleased with the space saving design and attractive "stainless steel" appearance. The scanner bed has sufficiently high edges to allow me to easily position a sheet of paper in proper alignment, without it trying to climb over the edge. A lot of human engineering went into this product!Windows XP really loves this machine. The software installed without the slightest hiccup. This scanner is as hot-pluggable as any device could be. XP recognizes its presence and absence immediately. Even though the LiDE series requires no power source other than from the USB port (boy do I enjoy the absence of another power brick!), I prefer to remove power from the scanner when it's not in use and it's a snap to pull the cable from the front USB port. (If you're curious, the LiDE requires 498mA against the standard USB output of 500mA. Probably 10% or less of the current draw of CCD technology scanners.)The package comes with some impressive looking software but all I wanted to do was scan images from PaintShop Pro and Adobe Acrobat and enjoy convenience copying. There is appx. 500MB of software if you load everything but I only installed the XP Driver and the CanoScan Toolbox. I did this not because I didn't want the other software, but really to see if the scanner would be fully functional without it (including the 4 "one-touch" buttons).I was glad to discover that the CanoScan Toolbox has everything that's required to Copy, Scan to a program (PaintShop Pro?), Scan to email, and Scan to a file (including a PDF file). You may like some of the other programs they offer if you want to try your hand at OCR, manage photo albums, and similar tasks. I did install the Adobe Photoshop Essentials 2.0 because I respect Adobe software and wanted to see what this entry level image editing program can do. Not counting the 95MB for Photo Essentials, the driver and Toolbox took only around 30MB or less out of the potential 500MB.The CanoScan Toolbox is very functional, impressive software. It allows you to setup 7 discrete type of scans with their unique resolutions, scan method (color, grayscale, etc.), paper size, your printer, specify your pet image editing program, etc. Then, you can associate your choice of 4 of these 7 functions with any of the 4 physical buttons at the front of the scanner. Canon has preset reasonable defaults. There are a couple negatives to be aware of. CIS technology, as has been reported by some LiDE 30 users, is sensitive to the item scanned hugging the glass. This is quite true and even a thin pamphlet will produce a distorted scan, especially at page edges and corners where there's curl. The solution is to press the lid down to flatten the page against the glass. Consider this if you do a lot of scanning from magazines and books.Another negative is my mild disappointment with the automated scan functions and single button functions --- a bit overrated in my opinion. Scanning to a program or file creates a JPG file first and then saves it and/or gives it to the image editing program. The quality of that JPEG was not to my satisfaction and I'd rather have the imaging program manage the scan and work with the raw scan data.PDF files can be created automatically but may be a bit bloated and can have a grayish background. This can be improved considerably by choosing "Text Enhancement" or "Black and White" as the scanning mode. If you want to create an occasional PDF file, the Toolbox can do it for you rather easily. The scanner appears to be durable. I scanned 120 8.5x11 color glossies over a 2 day period and it didn't breathe hard or make any strange sounds. It's also pretty quiet, in my view, although a few have complained it was loud. It could easily be used in a home office environment while you're talking on the phone.Today I called Canon's technical support to ask some "how-to" questions. It was not toll-free but I got through very quickly and the technician was extremely courteous, knowledgeable, and generous of his time. After one year, they will continue to help but at only $10 an incident. Very good first impression here!I hope you

I searched the internet high and low to find something inexpensive that would do what I wanted without taking forever for each picture to scan. This one is a bit noisy, somewhat slow, but the nice feature is being able to put multiple pictures into it and have them scan all at once. Once I figured that out, this thing is a breeze. I agree that newsprint is not the highest quality for scanning, but doing both black and white and color photos was very acceptable.

First thing I noticed using the Canonscan was the speed . Connecting to the USB 2,0 port instead of the Printer port really made a difference. Also I noticed that the scanner automatically places the scanned object into a file which is easily accessable both to review and send on via email. The colors are also a great improvement on other scanners I have used in the past. Finally for the purchase price, the recipient is certainly getting a bargain and I was very pleased with the way Canon had packaged the unit, no parts were missing etc.

I purchase primarily to scan multipage documents to pdf. The multitude of pdf buttons built-in seemed to make this the scanner of choice. Unfortunately, I found the default threshold for B&W documents to be set too low. It's not possible to adjust this in the Canoscan Toolbox program preferences. There is a work around that requires directly accessing scan driver, but this negates the advantage of having the pdf buttons on the scanner. You can also scan documents as grayscale, but this takes up more memory than necessary for most plain B&W documents and white background is slightly gray. The hardware is nice, although I don't like the small magnets at the corners of the cover. This is anannoyance when scanning many pages. In summary, doesn't work great if your primary interest is document scanning to pdf.

I looked at a number of scanning devices, and features offered by the CanoScan appealed to me. I had never used a scanner, but I wanted to put some slides on disks, and I found that a number I had taken some 40 years ago had faded and turned pink. I wasn't too hopeful, but I put in some of the worst slides, and I was totally amazed by the results. Pictures of sea and sky were restord beyond belief. I have only been using the scanner for a few weeks, but thus far, I believe it was worth every cent. Wonderful results at a reasonable price. Amazon delivery was very prompt. I can't attest to the highly technical aspects of the CanoScan, but from my view, a worthwhile buy.

So far, I have been greatly impressed by high resolution scans that are obtained using this device. I have printed several 8x10 black and white enlargements from the scans of negatives and found the sharpness of the picture to be remarkable. The bundled software is top rate with many great features. The only drawback I can see is the time, several minutes, required for high resolution scans but often the higher dpi settings are not needed. This is a great scanner at a good price. Great scanner! Sleek, fast, and well worth its money. Using the Canon Scanner Toolbox software [included] is key: you can scan it directly to to any program you designate [I use Photoshop], which I then use to tweak my scans. Within the toolbox, you can also scan it directly to printer, save, pdf, etc. There are also convenient buttons on the scanner itself - these are a bit sensitive and I accidentally pressed them a couple of times, but you can quickly cancel if that happens. I ignore the included software [Arcsoft] in favor of Photoshop because I prefer to edit my images myself in familiar territory. I scanned, edited, and saved 20 images at 300 dpi in less than an hour. The USB power connection is a great bonus! No warmup time whatsoever. It stays plugged into my front USB port - I can just plop a photo onto the scanner, open up the Toolbox, verify settings, and presto!I'm looking forward to using the negative scanner attachment on my old family photos. should be fun.

I read the instructions on cleaning the glass and scanned again... but they were still there. Upon further examination of the glass, there were large particles of dust underneath the glass with no way to get it out. I contacted Canon directly and they said it was "anti-glare treatment" applied under the glass. Whatever! The Canon rep said I would be compensated under their warranty terms for a refurbished scanner of the same kind. I told them to take a flying leap! Never again will I buy a Canon product!

I've stopped using Corel and switched to ArcSoft. This feature alone makes it worth it's weight.I really enjoy the absence of an electrical cable. Плохо
I have not yet used my new scanner enough to rate it but I expect it to perform up to Canon's high standards.

Великолепно
Scanned some samples from the hundreds of Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides in my archives. Excellent results!! Same with color negatives. The software is also very good and easy to use.I highly recommend the 8600F for digitizing slides and negatives.(Amazon needs to pack the merchandise more securely, though.)
