I've been using the scanner for over a month now and have NO complaints.The setup was as easy as it gets. Having just one cable to hook up is a real bonus these days, and power consumption is negligible. Instructions were a little sketchy, but adequate. Software is fine, but if you have a photo editor you are used to it allows you to use that instead. I did not install the OCR software as it wasn't important to me, but my son-in-law says it's the best. The quality of the scans were amazing, and the speed was about what I expected. Higher quality takes a minute or so, but in my opinion not that much better that the default setting. Some scans actually improved the original. It suited my space needs better than any other scanner on the market, fits perfectly on top of my horizontally placed Dell compact. I highly recommend this product.

Good Only For Scanning Flat Items ~ No Depth Of Field For 3 Dimensional Items & Only Trial Software that you will need to pay extra for upgrades ~ if you want to resize your photos, etc. I am disappointed, as I have always used a scanner for items I list on auctions and this scanner is not really serving my purpose appropriately. I had a Hewlett Packard scanner that worked great for many years, but because I now have a computer with Windows Vista, it would not recognize my scanner because it was more than eight years old. So much for Vista ~ not too happy with that either. Live and learn. Now I see why so many people complain about the new windows vista. UPDATE: Scanner malfunctioned and Canon offered great customer service and a replacement at no charge to me!!!!!

I can't tell you how much i love this scanner! I mostly use it to scan old photos ,sketches i make and documents and it is very fast if set to the right settings.I highly recommend this scanner and believe me at first when i ordered it i was very worried if it would work great or not and now I'm so glad i bought it!It also has a nice sleek design,easy to install and use ,and this is the first time i used a scanner so I'm very impressed and happy with it.

What would you expect from a scanner under $100.00 Exactly and that's what you get. It's okay for the money thus far I have just made copies of office work and it works quite well but a bit slow conpaired to the last scanner I owned. The software that comes with it is nice and easy to use. over all I would give it a C+.

I did not used it very often. The best thing is it is very compact, save a lot of space. Moreover, it only use USB port for power supply. One shortcoming is when you save the scanning pictures as Jpeg, it is a little slow. However, it is much faster to save as PDF files.

I wanted a scanner that would work under Linux with an app called VueScan. After reading the list of compatible scanners and a BUNCH of reviews on Amazon and elsewhere, I settled on this scanner. The combination of VueScan and this scanner produces amazing results when scanning color photos. The color rendition is superb and the image quality is outstanding IMHO. Although I am certainly not trying to compare it to high-end scanners, nor have I ever used anything like that, so I guess my opinion is purely subjective. It *does* put an older HP ScanJet 3200C (that I got for free and tried) to shame. It does make a moderate amount of noise when scanning, but it's certainly not objectionable to me. To sum it up: PROS: inexpensive, a *great* bargain uses LEDs as the light source, which should be very reliable great image quality when scanning color photos USB powered small footprint, easily portable works with Vuescan under Linux CONS: none that I have found Things that don't matter to me: Makes some noise OCR not required so no comment Bundled apps not required as I am not using it on a Windows boxOverall, I'd buy this scanner again in a hearbeat. Now it just remains to be seen how long a lifespan it has...

I have had two of these scanners in 14 months. The first one started showing blue streaks after 8 months and Canon did an outstanding job of overnighting a new scanner to me (under warranty = no cost to me). I just packed up the old one and sent it back with a prepaid label, so it didn't cost me a penny! The second scanner lasted 6 months before showing yellow streaks in the scan that couldn't be calibrated out. It is out of warranty and Canon will only give me a 10% discount on a new scanner only if purchased at their online store (so even with the discount and free overnight shipping, the bottom line cost is actually higher than if purchased at Amazon.com).As far as the scanner, I could not be happier with the scanner's ability to scan 35mm slides. Granted, you have to wait awhile, as scanning a batch of 4 slides at the high quality automatic setting at 2400dpi takes about 1 hour. The results are superb and well worth the wait. The automatic settings have trouble with slides with a lot of white (e.g. your slides of Israel) and your scan will end up with details completely washed out, even though the preview looks OK. I spent a few hours playing around with manual settings and now have a "preset" I load up before scanning these types of slides.What can I say - the scanner produces great scans. It just doesn't hold up to moderate usage, so I don't recommend it.

Easy to install and operate. Takes a full minute to scan each 35mm color negative so the process is quite slow, even though you can put 12 negatives at a time on the scanner. Comes with Adobe Photoshop Essentials 4.0. Software needed to scan and process the pictures is cumbersome. Quality of scanned photos is excellent. Has auto red eye and scratch/dust removal functions. For the price, I'm satisfied. Free shipping from Amazon arrived several days before the "expected" date of delivery.

I cannot say enough about this scanner. Just finished scanning almost 2,000 slides dating back to the 1970's and everything came out wonderful! This was definitely the way to go, rather than having a professional business do the same thing for much, much more cost. I saved money, enjoyed digitizing my slides and was completely satisfied. Even the software was/is easy to use. Thank you Canon for an excellent product.

I bought the CanoScan 8600F primarily to scan negatives and slides - both 35mm and medium format. The first one I bought had to be returned because there was a large speck of something under the glass. I probably wouldn't have noticed it if I was scanning prints, but blowing up 35mm made it too large to ignore. The second 8600 also had a speck under the glass but it's small enough to work around. I recommend that the first thing you do after buying the 8600 is scan a smooth, white, paper at high resolution and check for specks in the center area where film is scanned.I also have an old HP PhotoSmart S-20 film scanner that I've used for several years, but it can't do medium format. So, I thought, if nothing else, I could continue to use the S-20 for 35mm and use the CanoScan 8600F for my medium format material - hopefully, the CanoScan would be good enough to use for everything. I wanted another dedicated film scanner, but one for medium format is way too much money. I did extensive tests and found that the 8600 was very good, but my old S-20 still delivers a slightly better image from 35mm, even though its top resolution is only "2400" dpi. The CanoScan 8600F is very good, and, because it's so easy and fast, I'll probably use it for everything but my most critical 35mm work - and I finally have a scanner for all my medium format material.

The CanoScan CS8600F has been great. I've used it a moderate amount, although not extensively. I have scanned in negatives, slides and photos, all with very good results.The only downsides I would mention are that at high resolution it is relatively slow, but I can't imagine any product in this price class being any faster.The support for Mac and PC is great, as I have used it on both, though primarily use it on my Mac. The bundled software is good as well, with Adobe Photoshop Elements a great addition. I actually had Photoshop CS, but find Elements a little better complement to the simple needs I have for most of my scanning and touch ups. Only switched into full CS for one really complicated photo.Overall, a great combination of features, performance and especially price. If there is a better product in the under 250 category, I certainly haven't heard of it.

This scanner was strictly bought to scan and archive negatives and slides. Impressive quality and ease of use, and the price is unbeatable. I know there are more pricy ones out there with more features, but for our purposes in archiving my husband's "old school" pro photography it is wonderful. A++++++

This was the cheapest scanner with the specs I was looking for in an at home scanner. I use it probably every other day, mostly to at home deposits. I've only used it a couple of times for pictures (some old 1940s pics) and they came out good enough to blow up from the small wallet size pic to a 3"X5". The speed isn't the greatest, takes about 15-20 secs to boot up and about the same amount of time to scan, so probably not ideal for scanning a ton of pics.

I don't know why others have had problems with the software running on a Mac. I have an Intel Mac, I installed the scanner software and it worked perfectly out of the box. Imported from Photoshop CS3 Import menu and tried it with included software as well and had no problems. GREAT scans too, by the way.As far as the knocks on the scanner software's value as an image editor, I don't know if people are expecting to get a high end image editor or something with a $150 scanner but its been my experience that scanner software usually isnt all that great...same goes for printer software. They are usually adequate and nothing more. There's a reason why Photoshop costs $600.This scanner is great...USB powered (no fat AC plug), 180 degree flip-off cover, and superb image quality. You can't go wrong!

This is great for scanning documents to PDF for electronic transmissions. Very fine text is not scanned very clearly, but regular 9-10pt are.Installation is very simple (follow instruction stickers stuck on the scanner.) CanoScan program is straight forward with easy to read icons.It plugs into the usb port without additional power. It's also light and slim, so portable with a laptop.Most of all, it came at an amazing price.

I purchased this scanner this weekend because my old scanner, which was still in working order, was not compatible with my new operating system Vista. I love how simple it is to install and that it only uses the USB cord for power and connection to the computer. I haven't figured out the programs that come with the scanner but that takes time. It is light and takes very little space. I recieved it on the day they said I would also. I didn't need anything too fancy. It is only to scan pictures and nothing else. I would recommend this to anyone that asks. The box even states Certified for Vista! I am happy with my purchase!

I bought this scanner specifically for scanning tightly-bound large books made fragile by more than a century of sitting on their shelves. The LiDE600F is the sole available low-priced scanner designed for such a job.It has performed superbly, yielding perfect copies of the yellowed pages with no damage to the originals.I would have been content with plain copies, but was pleasantly surprised to find the scanned images could be converted to editable text files or to searchable Portable Document Files (PDF} by just pressing the right button. This versatility is mainly owing to what I believe to be a full version of "Presto! Page Manager 7.15" software, which comes bundled with the scanner. Also in the software bundle is "Adobe Photoshop Starter, Ed. 3.0," which is quite useful for picture editing and a version of Omnipage, for optical character recognition (OCR), which is somewhat limited in function when compared to "Presto!".

This is my first scanner. It is a little bit slow as other reviewers mentioned. But is good enough for my purpose of just archiving receipts and other documents. My only minor complaint with this is if I'm scanning a crampled or folded doc, you might need to press down harder to get the a good scan on the text along the folded area. And after looking at the all purpose printer, fax and scanner, you just need to add a little bit more to get all in one.

I bought this scanner to replace a dinosaur (LIDE80) and I love it. My only complaint is that the specs say it is compatible with Windows 2000. The scanner software is, BUT the Photoshop Elements (required for scanning slides/film/negatives) which were included were only for XP or Mac. Not great for those of us still using W2000. I'm waiting to hear from tech support what my options are....Other than that, it's great. Clippings from magazines, books, old photos all scan beautifully.

Being a graphic designer and using Macs for 20 years now, it would be safe to assume that I have used just about every brand scanner out there by now. This new Canon is the tops. Absolutely no complaints here with this model. You cannot go wrong with this. Flawless.

I am very pleased with the ease of use and resolution of the scanned image. I haven't yet tried all of it's features, but so far it exceeds all of my expectations. It replaces another brand that was a pain to use from the day I bought it.

After reading all the reviews here, I was impressed that this scanner could do the trick. BOY DOES IT!I am VERY happy with this scanners ability to do high quality scans of my 50-60 year old slides. You can do regular quality in 4 minutes per slide, but since I don't care about time (I put in a batch of 4 and then go watch TV), I let it go on high quality which is 7 minutes per slide. Its nice that you can do 4 at a time.Other scans are MUCH faster of course. I am a pixel / quality freak so I don't mind the time, but normal picture print scanning is a minute or less.You can now stop reading reviews and buy this scanner! ;-)

Love this scanner! Made excellent scans of 35mm slides I have and also I love being able to create a pdf of a series of pages at the touch of a button. I'm a graphic designer so this allows me to send off a series of rough sketches quickly and easily in one file! WEorks great on my Mac OS X 10.4.

Scanner easy to set up and use. Ability on taking drawings to PDF files is excellent as when as phono (nexagive) scanning. Only thing missing is the ability to scan larger negatives (4x5) size. Outsanding value.

This is by far the best scanner I've ever used. I've tried several others, mostly older model scanners, and this one wins the ease of use hands down. It is simple to install, easy to use and does a good job. The software supplied works pretty well even if it does take a little getting used to. I haven't tried any of the OCR stuff yet, but everything else works like a charm. Since it has only one cable (the USB cable), I didn't even have to worry about having another AC power connector.

I'm very happy with this product. I needed a scanner that was compact, easy to travel with and (most importantly) USB powered. It's not the fastest scanner (which is why I only gave it 4 stars) but what can you expect for something this small without a separate power supply.

Overall I'm very pleased with the scanner. It's very easy to use and the image quality is decent. It's not great, but good enough for my needs. The image editing software that comes with it is just ok. I don't do much editing anyway so it's not a big deal. One great thing about it is that it's USB powered! No power cord. Just plug it into your PC and it's ready to scan. The buttons on the front are nice too, especially if you want to make a copy. You just push the button and the copy comes out on the printer. So cool. Overall I'd recommend this scanner. I can't believe I waited so many years to get a scanner.

I needed to upgrade my 8 -year old scanner. I wanted a /good/scanner, not an all-in-one printer-scanner-faxer-coffee maker. I ordered this one because of the Canon name and price point. I just expected another "pretty good" scanner. This was a surprise. It's fast, quiet, and the software is very smart. You can place 4 different pictures on the platen and it will give you 4 different files -- each prescanned and exposed correctly for that file, not a group average. The same for slides - 4 slides, 4 files.This was my first Canon copier; won't be my last.

This is the second scanner I owned and it is much superior to the one that came before. Not only is the scanner aesthetically pleasing and relatively unobtrusive, it is powered via USB, which makes it one of the few doodads I own that doesn't require access to a wall socket.I hadn't had much use for the scanner until last week when my mom and I decided that the shoeboxes full of photos should be digitized and preserved.I scanned over 500 pictures in one day in only a couple hours, with not a lot of work. The key is the remarkable technology that lets you put multiple photos on the plate at once, and it automatically detects the edges and crops the photos, saving them as it goes. I'd say out of the first 500 or so scans, there were maybe 4 mistakes (cutting heads off for instance) but that was easily remedied by rescanning at a different angle).I use a combination of photoshop and picasa to organize the pictures. If I had to manually scan and crop every photo, I'd go mad. Thankfully this canon has made my job a lot easier.

I wanted a small flatbed scanner to convert nearly all of my paper documents (four lateral file drawers full) into PDF files. I've now scanned well over 1000 pages now with no problems. It could be a tad faster. Even as it is, it finishes scanning before I have the next page ready at least half of the time.I'd give this scanner five stars were it not for the fact that the Mac OS X software included is so obviously an afterthought. The CanoScan Toolbox does not even have a standard OX X interface (It's not Win XP either, it's just something else entirely). Another minus is that the software which ships with the scanner is several vesions out of date and it's not as easy to find updates on Canon's web site as it should be.Overall, however, it is an excellent value.Follow-up 2/27/08: The Canon software is not compatible with Mac OS X 10.5, notwithstanding what it says on Canon's software update page. When I contacted Canon, they basically admitted the problem and offered to sell me a newer scanner at a discount. Instead of replacing the scanner, I replaced the software with VueScan. I have had no problems scanning a couple of hundred pages using VueScan in Mac OS X 10.5.

I love the fact that the scanner is powered by USB only, and that I can store it on a bookshelf among my books. Hard to beat the price, too. The image quality, however, is the worst I have ever seen from a scanner. It's possible that my unit has something wrong with it. I will live with the poor quality of the image, since I only use it for document records, but forget about trying to do anything with quality color images.

Some addenda to the previous reviews. The software isn't great but I've found I can make this scanner work with OmniPage and Adobe Photoshop Elements. Since my main needs are scanning text for optical-character recognition (OCR), and some photo scans, this makes the 600F fully functional, thank you.The scanner isn't as fast as some desktop scanners I've used, but it makes up for it in portability and lightness, i.e., as a mobile scanner for use with a laptop. I would've liked having this on a recent trip where I needed to scan a number of legal and administrative documents and found myself making a number of trips to Kinko's. Given a small printer, this scanner and my laptop I could've saved a lot of time and expense with the 600F's copy feature.The 600F is also quiet enough that I would be comfortable using it in a library (i.e., doing research), and it seems to make reasonable demands on the laptop power. Given that the USB cable is also its power source -- and no bulky AC power cords to go with what the laptop already has -- this adds to the scanner's simplicity and portability.Highly recommend.

I mainly bought this scanner because of reviews that mentioned being able to save things in PDF format. Well, it's easy once you figure it out--but that took me over 90 minutes!The scanner comes with several different kinds of software, and only one of them will save to PDF format. That's the CanoScan Toolbox. Neither ArcSoft PhotoStudio nor the Scansoft OmniPage software will.The Quick Start Guide suggests trying your first scan using the ArcSoft software. I tried a small chart of plant names. It scanned very slowly and the result was unreadable. I tried again using a higher DPI. When I tried to save the file, I discovered no PDF option in the drop-down box. And even trying to close a window in the program took forever.Next I tried the OmniPage software, since it was designed for text. It looked much clearer, but the procedure was still slow because it kept asking me to confirm the spelling of nearly every plant name. Again, no option in the drop-down box for saving to PDF format.Finally in desperation I clicked on CanoScan Toolbox, where there was a big button marked PDF. I had a two-page document scanned and saved, wonderfully readable, in about a minute. Why on earth doesn't the Quick Start Guide suggest starting with this one, being the easiest and fastest?I think I'm going to be very happy with the scanner, but am deducting one star for lack of documentation.

I have used this scanned quite a bit. It quit working after about 8 months (still under warranty), but was repaired locally at no cost to me. It's been working fine lately, although I'm not using it as hard as I had been at the time.

You can't beat the performance of the LiDE 25 for the price. Images are very clear, and it was a breeze to hook up. The speed of the scan is not the fastest, but if you are just scanning items every once in a while, that shouldn't be a problem.Great product!

I purchased this model scanner because of it's portability. It fits into the same case with my laptop. Having only the one USB cable to deal with simplifies the opperation as well. It's scanning quality is good, but the software could be a little more user friendly. It takes some experimenting but not too difficult to master. There are two slightly down charactoristics. It is noisy and tends to be slower than the larger scanners. But for the price and size, it's a good choice.

I love this scanner. I use a mac and have had no problems. I believe the poor reviews are due to the fact that the scanner will not scan mounted slides. If it were not for the ability to scan 35mm film strips( something I like since I'm not scanning mounted slides), I think the LiDE600F with its versatile design would have reviews similar to the LiDE70. If your shopping for an inexpensive scanner to scan slides and negatives then I would recommend the CanoScan CS8600F. I have been scanning images for about 10 years and highly recommend this scanner to anyone looking for a hip, versatile, innovative, sleek, high performance scanner all for a reasonable price.

I have used the scanner for documents and it is great. Later on I'll be using it for photos and I hope it does as well then. I especially like the USB connectivity and the elimination of a need for a power cord.
