In Client mode the WAP3205 is locked in "mixed 802.11n/g/b mode". This means your router must also be in mixed mode else you get a red check-mark in the Pofile List (sic) instead of the green check mark that you want to see and the WAP won't connect, (not sure why they use a check-mark to indicate an error condition, it's only half broken at this point I guess). Anyhoo, with router & WAP both in mixed mode the WAP connects fine, but the connection is 802.11g so you only get max speed of 24 Mbps, not the 300 MBps (you'll be lucky) that you got an 'n' WAP for in the first place. Transferring a 66Mb file through the ZyXel took 108s, but only 42s using an Airport Express we also have hanging around that does make an 'n' connection (even though it too only does mixed mode). Maybe it's an issue between the ZyXel and my DIR-655 router but the D-Link's a pretty popular, and good, router so I know which one stays and which one goes of these 2. I wonder if others who are reporting "no problems" are checking to see what mode/speed they're getting, many seem to be using WEP rather than WPA/WPA2 which suggests they can only be getting 'g' because 'n' doesn't support WEP. I also tried using the ZyXel in Universal Repeater mode which gives you Client mode functionality but also gives you the Configuration -> Network -> Wireless LAN -> General -> Advanced tab that you need to change the 802.11 mode, but that still doesn't have an 'n' only option. The device now comes with a 204 page user guide on the CD, in places it's more like a WiFi primer than a basic user guide and makes for a great bedtime read, though all you really need to know about setup is in the top 2 Amazon reviews (1 1/2 pages).

I bought this to connect TVs / Blue Ray to my home wireless network. I spent many hours reviewing my network's setup and ZyXEL documentation both in the pkg and online; did the Firmware update. I was not able to connect my TVs to the standard 2WIRE AT&T DSL modem wirelesly via ZyXEL. I'd spend even more time if I didn't have a designate desktop I used to manage ZyXEL without having to switch TCP/IP on it back and forth. No matter what range I used and option tried, the TVs would not get an IP assigned dynamically via ZeXEL and connect to the Internet. I stopped just short from calling the Support, which is conveniently (for ZyXEL) is only available during normal office hrs on the West Coast. I figured if an experienced PC person (me) cannot link the unit to such a common equipment as 2WIRE - there is something fundamentally wrong with the unit, or documentation, or both. I noticed also that the documentation is entirely focused on configuring ZyXEL as an Access Point, not as a Bridge between Wireless and Ethernet (referred to as the Client Mode in the documentation). Accidently, I needed a new Access Point for another DSL I'm setting up, so I tested ZyXEL for that purpose. It was actually relatively easy to set it up. Static WEP did not work with a Windows 7 PC, but WPA-PSK did the job. The signal strength was about half of what 2WIRE provides (which itself is barely enough for a regular size house), but since the new DSL is for a small apartment - should be good. My verdict: DO NOT buy this to work as a bridge; get it if you need a simple low signal Access Point working with b/g/n.

First, I am a retired electronics/computer tech. I have setup many networks in my career. Based on past experience, I bought a ZyXel wireless router and The ZyXel WAP3205 to extend my wireless to the top floor of my home. The router setup in 10 minutes. For the life of me, I could not get the WAP3205 to connect using the ez setup. I called tech support and the 3rd tech I got was excellent! He could not get the combo to work either but rather than give up, he grabbed a router and WAP like mine and he had the same issue. He stuck with it until he found a work-around then called me back. We had to go to the expert setup and manually enter settings and it now works like a champ! Bottom line is great support located in California, not some 3rd world place with broken english. Will be 5 stars when firmware is updated to fix the ez setup.

I don't think you can get a better device for the price. I needed a wired remote spot for my XBOX and laptop and would have to go under the house to run the wire. Instead I bought this box and it works great. The instructions that came with it does not explain the client setting, but the user review on this page gives the set-up perfectly. You will need a laptop or a computer desktop to connect to set-up the client. Once you do and have it sending signals to your wireless modem, you can then use it to hard-wire any device that does not have a wireless device and can only work with a hard-wire (or in case of the XBOX360, a special XBOX wireless adapter). Attach a 5 or 8-port modem switch and you can add many other devices at your remote wireless location. Beats running lines.I will repeat what others have said. It comes with bad instructions but if you follow the user review instructions, you will have it set up quickly.

I bought this to use as a Universal Repeater. In this case I wanted to access a Wifi signal from my house in my RV (parked nearby). This works excellent. One wifi antenna picks up the house's wireless signal, and this is essentially repeated through the other antenna as well as the LAN connection, which is what I had hoped for. So now I have a wired network in my RV that functions as a perfect extension of my home network, and I can also log onto this device wirelessly and have the same functionality. There are a few parts of the documentation that could be better - it didn't seem to be documented that the wired LAN connection would work in Repeater mode, and it didn't document which antenna does what (this mattered because I've connected the device to a high gain external antenna). But all in all it worked great and was pretty reasonable to set up considering what it is.

I wasn't able to use the WDS feature, since my router doesn't support it, but I expect to remedy that soon. I couldn't get it to work in any mode other than as a WAP. And I had to assign a static IP address -- it didn't like the fact that my router's gateway was in a different subnet so it refused a DHCP assignment. WDS would give it a 5-star for functionality, but pickiness about the gateway subnet takes that star away.Once I got it working, all seems good. I didn't see any big problems with the documentation: in my opinion it's no worse, or better, than the documentation I've seen with other wireless network devices. You have to do a lot of messing around with these devices to get things working properly, especially if you use a different subnet from the devices default subnet.

I don't know what other reviewers are complaining about. I followed the directions in the manual (on the included CD) for setting it up in universal repeater mode. I logged into my router and set it to use one particular channel, which I also told the Zyxcel to use. Took it downstairs, plugged it in, and boom, where I used to get no wireless signal, now I have a great signal. ( I did not use WPS to set it up, as it was simple enough to enter SSID and key manually.)My Netgear N150 from Comcast is located in the NE corner of my house. My Xbox is located in the basement SW corner. Because the foundation is L-shaped and there are 2 foundation walls on the line-of-sight between the router and the Xbox, I couldn't get any connectivity down there. (My wifi scanner app on my android phone showed a signal level of about -91dB.) I downloaded the speedtest.net app onto my phone and walked around the house trying to figure out where to position the repeater, keeping in mind that it had to have a line of sight around that foundation corner. In the same room as the Netgear, I can get 12-15Mbps. I settled on a downstairs bedroom where I get about 7-8Mbps from the Netgear. Obviously, I can't hope to do better than that when connected to the Zyxcel. Happily, I get about 5-6Mbps in the Xbox corner of the basement now. Not too shabby! Haven't tried streaming any hi-def video yet, but regular video looks fine. Eventually I am going to run a hardline down there, but this is a great interim solution.

For whatever reason, since upgrading to Windows 7 (could be the reason) I've had a problem connecting my desktop computer to the wireless network in my home. It would work awhile, quit, work again, etc. Went through three different USB wireless adapters, no luck, eventually it would have issues. When hardwired I have no problems, would connect (50' cable) to one of the hardwired ports on my wireless router. So I bought this to connect my computer to the wireless network, as the computer will assume it's connected wired. I used the details provided in the review section by J. Ferguson (jimsrod) adjusted a tad since I was doing something different; not sure I even looked at the book instructions (Thanks, Jim!). I've been using it now for over a month, no issues at all. Served the purpose 100%, wife doesn't gripe about me stretching a cable across the front entry, down the hall, and into my son's bedroom where the wireless router is located; computer's happy, wife's happy, I'm happy, life's good -- five stars.

I needed a temporary wireless internet bridge to connect 3 desktop computers wirelessly while an office space was being renovated. I initially tried a Netgear WG602 Wireless-G Access Point and while it had a Client Mode that seemed like it would function as a wireless bridge, the documentation for it was very poor and after some fussing it turned out that it could only work with one computer at a time so I returned it. Some Googling found the ZyXel, and while I was skeptical of a brand name I never heard of before, and that it was was over $15 cheaper than the Netgear despite also being Wireless-N as opposed to the Netgear being only Wireless-G, I'll be darned if it turned out to be a much most sophisticated device than the Netgear or even the last Linksys units I had fussed with, despite being a very small and light device to boot.Documentation for these types of devices is usually pretty awful as a matter of course for whatever reason, and I actually found the onboard web setup to be much slicker and more straightforward than what the Netgear had. As noted in the prior review by J. Fergunson, though, the place where you need to go to switch to Client Mode is not at all obvious -- it's under "Maintenance" and then "Sys OP."But it turned out that unlike the Client Mode in the the Netgear, the Client Mode in the ZyXel supports full wireless bridging between that and any typical wireless router. While the ZyXel comes with 2 Lan ports to hook up 2 computers, I just connected one of them to a spare 5 port hub, and then hooked up the three PC's through that. No problem. So as a piece of tech, it's actually pretty impressive for the money. It's not meant for non-techies, but you can find some basic how-to's like that in the J. Fergunson review here and there on the Internet.

I replaced an aging 802.11g access point with this and am mostly pleased with it's performance, usability and design. The one complaint I have is that, for some reason or another, my HTC EVO won't stay connected to this - all the other phones, tablets, laptops and consoles have zero issue and it's been reliable since day 1. I also like the design of the device; this is the first access point I haven't felt the need to hide away mounted to a closet in a wall, instead displaying it on my desk where I get to watch the (thankfully not blue) blinking lights all day.Unlike some here I had no issue with the initial setup and believe that the device delivers a good price/performance ratio.

Bought this to use with a blue ray player that had internet features but no built in wifi. It had a WiFi add on option but that cost nearly $80 even on Amazon. Considered using Powerline networking option thinking it might be better to have a "wired" connection for streaming video but in the end opted for the ZyXEL WAP3205. I have FIOS internet connectivity and hooked this up to the wireless router that is supplied by Verizon. I connected a laptop to the device to do the setup and got connected right away. I scored it 3 for setup because while I had no trouble I am not a stranger to networking. While I would not consider it plug and play, it works as designed. I have not used it for Netflix streaming that much yet so I cannot speak to its performance but while I had it connected to the laptop I saw no reason to believe it would be a problem. This unit has 2 downstream ports which is a bonus as I suspect at sometime there will be a media server of some type next to my other entertainment devices. If you are looking for a way to get to your home network into a room with no easy way to run cables this device might just be your best bet solution.

This needs to be documented. I bought this because it is listed as B/G/N, and I run an N-only network at home (specifically set N-only devices allowed at the router level). This Zyxel will not work in client mode on an N-only network, it requires G+N. After a back and forth with Zyxel support, they blamed my router. Fine, I went out and bought a new router. Same thing - the Zyxel works on G, but not on N. I emailed them again, and again they blamed my router. I then borrowed a different brand of router from a friend - same thing. Access point will not work on N-only. I tried a Linksys, a D-Link, and a TrendNet router, I think we can rule out the router as being at fault. Zyxel will not accept responsibility and recommended that I return it to the store. THIS IS FALSE ADVERTISING. This unit is advertised as N capable and it is not. I hope this saves someone else out there from buying this piece of junk. It's like buying a car advertised with 300 horsepower, only to find it has 50 horsepower. I welcome anyone with a few extra minutes to spare to set their home network to N-only, and try to connect the Zyxel in client mode. :(

I agree with what the others have posted here about the documentation being bad. You get either the 5 page quick start or the 200+ page online manual. Neither seem to fit my exact set up. I have an AT&T DSL modem connected to a Linksys wireless broadband router. The first challenge was getting my router changed to 192.268.1.1 so it could connect to the Zyxel to make the settings. When I changed my router, immediately all hell broke loose as I had an IP conflict. I finally unplugged everything from the router and reset it. Then i was able to program the Zyxel. The first attempt seemed to go okay, but once I connected up in client mode to my Sony TV it failed to access. So I changed the Zyxel to 192.168.2.101. That worked only temporarily before it brought my network down as that too conflicted with another device. Finally...I changed the Zyxel to 192.1682.108 and now all is well. I'm sure others have a similar setup where the DSL router is 192.168.1.1. Go figure. For $49 it's half the cost of other WAP's and includes two lan ports which I need for a Dish Network box and the TV. I guess I could have saved some time and called tech support, but now I'm much more knowledgeable about wireless networking.

Thanks to jimsrod and the other reviewers before me, I was able to easily configure the WAP3205 as a client to my Netgear router (everyone was right in claiming that the supplied documentaion is terrible!!). I then changed it to use DHCP, so that the Netgear would give it an IP automatically. After that I spent about 2 hours on the phone with ZyXel support, while they tried to figure out why the WAP3205 would not pass DHCP information to a downstrem PC. They eventually gave up and said that my unit might be defective and that I should return it to Amazon. Not wanting to go that route just yet, I connected my Panasonic Blue ray player and configured it with a static IP. The player was able to use all the Viera Cast (Internet) features just fine. I then went back into the player, just for grins and giggles, and told it to use DHCP. It worked!! Now the WAP3205 gets a dynamic address from the Netgear router and allows the downstream device to do the same. This is exactly what I wanted to do! I saved about $50 or so by getting the WAP3205, instead of Panasonic's dedicated, and expensive device. This unit would get 5 stars if it was documented properly. But the bit of aggravation during setup was worth it, because I saved $$ and it is doing what I bought it for.

Using this as a wireless access point. Popped it into the router and minutes later I was all set. Worked great. Definitely notice a marked improvement to my Verizon wireles b/g router.Only caveat is that it is easy if your network is on the 192.168.1.x subnet. Also the router by default is hardcoded to 192.168.1.2, which is a bit of pain since some device probably is already using that IP. I have a computer with that IP and I have to manually change the IP of that computer. Overall not a big deal for me, everything else worked great.I gave it 4 stars because I don't get the logic in putting out a 300 megabit access point, but limiting your network port to 100 megabit Ethernet. But ultimately this is pretty clearly stated in the product description.-----------Update 5/5/2011: I just bought another one to act as a network bridge with the desktop and network printer I have upstairs. Install was once again a snap, I was up and running in 5 minutes. Also, the price is now under $40, which is a great price. My complaints are still the same as above. Still makes no sense to have a wireless 300 mb network, and still only have 100 mb wired network. Would have been better if they had gone gigabit on the ethernet network.
