This product is too user unfriendly. There's little to no troubleshoot guide and NO TECHNICAL SUPPORT NUMBER IN THE MANUAL OR THE CD. I had to go to ZyXel's website: [...].Unless you have a lot of time on your hand and you like screwing around with poorly designed gadgets, I suggest you find another solution.I even followed the reviewers suggestions on here and still had trouble getting want I wanted: a universal repeater to extend the range of my wireless router.Oh, and the support number I did find is only available M-F 8-5, so forget it if you actually work for a living.

AS my title says...I purchased two of these to replace an AP that was failing. My goal was to place one on each floor. My first issue is bad signal strength. I have the routers no more than 30ft away and nothing but 2 doors in the way and I get 3 out of 5 bars. The previous 4 year old AP always had full strength. My second gripe is that I cannot change the AP's hostname. This makes it inconvenient to manage in a DNS/DHCP environment. I wish I didn't throw the boxes out because these would go right back! The other thing I was not able to find was a option for WPA-Enterprise secruity.

I bought this product with some anticipation (lots of capability including a universal repeater mode, good price) and a bit of trepidation (hard setup). However, I was very pleasantly suprised, leading me to suspect that XyXel has really improved their setup.I first used the WPS button to pre-share security info with my main router. So far so good.Next I configured my laptop to have a static IP as described elsewhere in these reviews. I did this on my own but was curious about the documentation so checked it out. The printed manual wasn't a lot of help here, but a quick perusal of the online (just search the product name on the xyxel site) one gives very good instructions on how to do this for various operating systems. After changing my IP, logging in was straightforward. After I logged in the router presented me with radio button options to use the hardware as a router, access point, or universal repeater. I chose the last, and the next page asked me which network to connect to. I chose my home network (channel was automatically populated) and clicked connect. Since I had pre-shared my key this was all there was to it.I changed the laptop IP back to dynamic allocation, and was done. Total set up time about 5-10 minutes. It appears to work well both wired and wireless (as it should in universal repeater mode)

I bought this to hook my Panasonic VIERA Plasma HDTV to my wireless network. It's half the price of the Panasonic dongle and has worked great. I used the instructions from jimsrod's review and had this set up within a few minutes. It's nicely hidden behind the TV, and Vieracast works fine. What's good:- I like that it has extra capabilities. In particular, if I wanted to set it up as a wireless extender, I have that available in my toolkit. Also, it has two ethernet ports, so I could potentially connect an internet capable gaming unit or dvr to it as well as the TV.- The price is right.- With Jim's instructions, set-up was simple.- Panasonic's Vieracast works great. I have netflix, amazon video, picasa, pandora set up, all without problem. What could be better:- This isn't the absolute fastest solution. So far, I haven't noticed any lag on any of my services, and I'm not sure how fast my cable modem is even capable of transmitting to my wireless base, but if you want the best speed you can get on a Panasonic device, you're probably better off with the Panasonic dongle. Here's why:1) Although the ZyXEL is capable of using 802.11N, it only uses the 2.4 ghz band. If I were trying to max out speed, I would use a dual band wireless transmitter like the Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router WNDR3700. This would let me use the 5 ghz band as a dedicated n network for my av devices, and the 2.4 ghz band as a mixed g and n network for data devices like laptops, wiis, iphones, etc. This won't work with the WAP3205, which won't use the 5 ghz band, but would work with the dongle or a dual band access point like the Cisco-Linksys WET610N Dual-Band Wireless-N Gaming and Video Adapter.2) Unlike the dongle, the WAP3205 connects to the tv through an ethernet cable and ports, which potentially limits throughput. (The Cisco Adapter has this same problem). By using the USB port, the dongle cuts out a bottleneck.3) Of course, this all may be moot. My wireless router connects to my cable modem through an ethernet cable, so I suspect my throughput bottleneck is going to be there, but if you have enough speed coming from your wireless access point and want to maximize throughput on this end, the WAP3205 isn't the best solution.
I received the Zyxel in a timely fashion and proceeded to follow the very convoluted instructions. I am sorry I ever ordered it. I cannot get it to work and am not interested in trying it any longer. This purchase was a huge mistake!!!!

Took me a minute or so to get it set up correctly, but once it was, I now have a repeater and range extender that DOES WORK WITH VERIZON FIOS. The pushbutton link to my phone took 2 seconds, saving me the trouble of entering that very long passkey that fios provides. Plug a computer into this and you have an access point anywhere in the house. Extends the range to the back yard, too.I like it.

Can't beat the price/performance ratio.I would not even consider this ap/bridge/extender had it not for the detailed steps documented from a number of helpful reviewers here.Took me about 1 hour - unboxing, hook up, navigate the various tabs to get familiar with the unit, to up and running.I set mines up as Universal Repeater and followed the instructions provided by Anonymouse.http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A17L2FA3Z2244P/ref=cm_cr_dp_pdpA couple of caveats I noticed:- WLAN Station Status. I was expecting it to report ASSOCIATED, but mines display DISAssociated, but still worked...- Group Key Update Timer. For people encountering timeouts. Changing the default from 3600 to 0 resolved the problem for them. I gone ahead and set mines to 0 - even though I have yet to experience any drops.- I'm on Firmware 1.00(BFR.6)C0 11/22/2011All in all, I'm quite happy with the purchase. No more dead spots for a relatively cheap device ($35).

Paired this with the Netgear N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router (WNDR4500) to connect my PS3 to a "wired" connection. As most know the PS3 slim as well as older models only come with Wireless G connectivity and for streaming as well as online gaming this just sometimes doesn't cut it. By utilizing this I am now able to connect at 250-300 Mbps instead of the old 54 Mbps, keeping the PS3 connection to 3 and 4 bars consistently. Before I would only have 1-3 bars and streaming would sometimes studder at the lower bandwidth. Very good signal strength as it transmits through multiple rooms and two brick walls to keep these rates chugging right along. It has been a couple months since I set this up but the setup did not completely go by the manual, even though an updated manual is included on the CD. Unless I am mistaken the manual says you can utilize it as a repeater and a bridge at the same time. This however would not function properly so I had to use it as a bridge only which was the main purpose in purchasing this. I would have liked to extend my coverage area as well but didn't easily work that way.

If you are just going to use this as an access point, it can't be any easier! It can also be used as a wireless client, which I'm not using,so maybe that is where other people say it's hard to configure and the documentation is poor, I don't know.. All I know is it took MAYBE 10 minutes from out of the box to having it 'on line' in just access point mode. It's so easy even a Caveman can do it!!

I would be better a client than a repeater and access point. If you make it a client then you can use the 2 ethernet ports to connect a better router such as something with 5.8 GHz transmission power and better bandwidth. When I get a new router it's going to be a client soon so I can get the full bandwidth instead of half.

If you aren't familiar with networking, get something easier. Done.Luckily, I know enough about networking to get by with this, but it was not an easy setup. While it may not be difficult to get set up for basic purposes, anything beyond that will drive you nuts. I was using this extender to get a blu ray player some wifi, since it was out of range of my wireless router. While it's all set up now, and I love how it works and wouldn't want another extender, it took me a very long time of just using the process of elimination to get it all together.

I didn't find it that difficult to setup, but this is also not the first time I've done setup on similar devices. With that said, I can't seem to get any speed out of it.I'm using it as an AP and have it connected to the network by cable. Even if I have a device right next to it, I only get a 90MB connection. When I go about ten feet away, it quickly drops down to 2MB and has 4 bars of strength. It also has the problem some others have mentioned where the connected device loses internet conectivity but is still on the network.Overall, I'm looking for another solution.

So, I moved recently, and my Cisco wireless-N router wasn't quite reaching the back corner of my new house. I got this range expander in hopes of fixing that, and was surprised by how versatile the device is. In theory, it can do everything. In application, it didn't meet my needs.By trade, I'm a computer engineer. I've done it all. Networking, database admin, server admin, etc. I'm extremely computer literate, to say the least. You'd think that would give me a leg up at making this thing work correctly. It didn't help much. When I first got it, it was way too hard to setup. I finally had it configured, or so I thought, but it didn't improve reception in the back of the house. My signal was just as weak as if it wasn't there at all. And, if I tried to manually connect to it over wireless, it would ignore my connection attempts. I was about to give up on it when I realized there was a firmware update available. I installed the new firmware, and it was a major improvement. It even included a wizard to setup the darn thing. I ran the wizard, and everything looked like it should be working, but same issue...still had a weak signal. By creating a second network name, I could manually force my computers in the back of the house to use the range expander, and that seemed to work pretty well. It was weird moving my laptop around, though, because of multiple network options. After I was about happy with this arrangement, it started crashing. Usually about once a day, but sometimes more. This was unacceptable. I finally just moved my router to a slightly different location so that I didn't need a range expander at all. It was a joyous day that I sent this thing back to Amazon.

I'll have to echo the many reviews that say the configuration and documentation are bad. The interface is confusing, the choices are not well-explained, and you have to work with multiple screens to put the router into a working mode. I've set mine up in the "Universal Repeater" mode and it was challenging, to say the least. Further complicating matters is that the latest version of the firmware ("1.00(BFR.5)C0" dated 4/22/2011)) simply doesn't work for this purpose. I had actually had the router mostly working under the previous firmware version and thought I'd upgrade now. Well, once I upgraded the firmware, it was impossible to get a working repeater mode again. The ZyXEL would mangle the SSID of the existing network (but it could detect it correctly) and other problems (such as constantly crashing my D-Link 655). The "easy mode" seemed like it would walk you through any of the necessary configuration, but it didn't work for UR mode either. I used it to set up the "client mode" and that work flawlessly.I then downgraded the firmware back to the previous version ("1.00(BFR.4)C0" dated 6/23/2010) and set up the UR mode easily (being very familiar with the management screens at this point). Note, I used exactly the same steps and provided the same information that I had used before (establishing that the latest firmware doesn't work). Right now, it's running fine and the signal strength in this part of my house is much stronger. At this stage (now that it's finally configured), I like it and the functionality is good for the price. Now the question will be robustness and longevity. I'll update the review if those prove not to be okay.P.S. - Thanks to other reviewers that gave me a lot of insight into what was going on. Knowing that someone had gotten it working helped me to press on until it was done. I will say that I'd have paid another $10 for a more straightforward experience out of the box.

The ZyXEL 300 is everything it says it is. We have had zero problems with the 300. It was a snap to set up, just followed the instructions. The problem we were having with the old access point was cured immediately. Our signal has been stronger throughout the house with no shut-downs or cut-offs. The price was more than reasonable and I received it sooner than expected. I would indeed recommend this product to anyone looking for a capable access point for connecting multiple devices.Thank you for an outstanding product!

I bought this because I needed to separate my wireless access point from my router. I needed to install a Cisco RV042 VPN router to create a VLAN over the VPN to the rest of my family across the country... so my Router needs exceeded any of the combo units out there. I messed around with trying to get my existing dlink wifi router to work as an access point, but it was just not doing the job... so I bought one of these WAP3205.For me, it was beyond easy to set up. granted I have a bit of experience, but if you can read, and have a measurable IQ, you should be able to figure it out...Set the correct IP address before you add it to your network...My router address was 192.168.1.15.1 so I plugged this directly into my laptop and changed its factory address from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.15.2. saved the settings, and plugged it into my network.Set up your SSID'sA great thing about this AP is that you can configure multiple SSIDs each with their own security type and access restrictions... From my desktop, I connected to the AP via my web browser, and configured 1 SSID using PSK2, and a second SSID using WEP with MAC address filtering for my kids' DS, PSPs, WII etc... I disabled Intra BSS traffic so the WEP devices couldn't connect with any other devices on my network...That was it.. everything sprang to life, without a hickup, and has been running ever since...I did configure all of the other settings like time server etc... but there's no need to go into that here. the bottom line is this. If you have a reasonable understanding of simple home networking, you should be able to have this thing up and running in under 5 min. Provided that you understand the difference between a Router and an Access Point.... This is an Access Point... If thats what you need, this is a great one. and for the price, its excellent. My only wish is that they offered this in a version with gigabit ethernet instead of 10/100. Hope someone finds this useful. regards all....

Bought this Wi-Fi extender to extend my Wi-Fi about 200 feet from my router. I could pick up the signal intermittently at that location without the extender but the signal was weak and inconsistent. The extender picks up the signal much better and devices connect to it as if they were much closer to my router.I recently bought a second extender to put in a metal building. This building is only about 50 feet from the router but there was no signal inside the building. By putting the extender in the window of this building the signal is as good as if it were a non-metal building.I have been very satisfied with its performance.

This is my first ever Amazon product review -- I felt compelled to write it in light of the all the comments about the difficulty of setting up the Zyxel WAP320. I can only assume that they've updated the firmware recently, because my experience configuring the device could not have been easier. The only step that requires any network knowledge whatsoever is in knowing (and being able to change) the IP address of the pc/laptop you use to configure it initially. As mentioned in many reviews, it must be in the range of 192.168.1.3 - 192.168.1.254. Then you simply connect to the WAP3205 and a wizard literally walks you through the configuration steps. I set mine up as a universal repeater, and within 5 minutes I was done. I'm using it to extend my wireless signal upstairs, and to connect my 1st generation 360 to the internet.

Was able to get repeater working after following instructions. However do not allow the unit to get a IP from your other router until you set a alias IP otherwise you wont be able to connet to it until you go to your main router and check what IP it was given. Also make sure that your main router does not have auto channel select turned on or you will have to go through setup everytime your main router reboots and changes channels. The repeater can not follow channel changes from the main router. It only searches channels for the main router when you use the setup wizard. This was very anoying.I was never able to get access to the main router from the lan port only the wireless. Still working on this part...
