Skipping past the complete lack of useful documentation this device does not perform its job as a wireless extender. I have a straightforward wireless network set up with security and MAC filtering. Trying to get this thing to work with it has been nothing but a disaster. Once you know how the initial configuration to play with the network is OK and it even boosts the signal but shortly thereafter things start going horribly wrong.1) The MAC address listed for the router isn't the actual MAC address that connects to your wireless router. I have MAC filtering turned on and the only way I could get the device to connect to my network was to disable filtering temporarily so I could get the real MAC address. Turns out it actually connects with one of two MAC addresses. Go figure.2) On my main router I keep getting routing errors once the extender is connected. This happens every minute. Unfortunately the router logs don't provide enough info to tell me what the problem is. I just know devices complain about DNS once the extender is on.3) After a while (a couple of hours) the extender suddenly seems to disappear from the network. I cannot ping it anymore. I cannot connect directly to it via a wire. It doesn't show up in the router logs. Nothing. But the device says it is online and sending a wireless signal.4) Devices that connect through it have flaky Internet connections. The speed goes from normal to a crawl and then back. Even worse is that it drops wireless devices periodically.Some others have mentioned these issues in other places as well so I don't believe it to be my network. I'm returning this device as it doesn't do what I needed it to do. If you need a wireless extender then look elsewhere. I cannot speak for the other modes of this device.

I bought this unit to use as a range extender. While the documentation is not great I don't think it is as bad as many of these reviews stated. I set this up as a repeater/extender to my Cisco Valet Plus. The configuration was really quite straight forward. Once configured I thought I was all set but the unit kept dropping off. After reading many of the Amazon reviews I found one with similar experiences and implemented some of the configuration change suggested. Specifically I did the following:1) Under Configuration > Network > Wireless LAN > Security, set group key update timer to 0. (Originally set at 3600)2) Under Configuration > Network > Wireless LAN > Advanced, changed channel bandwidth to 20 MHz (from 20/40) to match my access point router configuration.3) Also changed Output power to 10% (from 100%). Since my target devices are close to the repeater and I felt that having 100% power may be causing some conflict with access point.Once these configurations were made I have not experienced any drops.Update (03-20-13)I forgot to mention that I also had to change the channel on my Cisco Router. The WAP3205 was set to use Channel 6 so I change my Router from Auto to Channel 6. In order to minimize drops both devices need to be set to use the same channel (and they cannot both be set to use Auto). I'm still seeing an occasional drops every couple of days but overall still very satisfied.

The keys to this product are "two and too" Read on.I think this is a fair review based on my two day use of this product. It never worked at all, but I took two days to try. On two occasions, I considered a large hammer as the fix. On both of those occasions, I consumed two beers to further avoid the temptation. That worked.Two instruction manuals exist. The manual included in the box is easy indeed. (It looks very large and comprehensive, but it is printed in over a dozen languages); one must set his or her router to a precise range and then access the product via its own factory installed IP address. This resulted in nothing short of throwing my router offline for two hours. I learned about the "real" instruction manual (200+ pages--in English) about this time. Too bad!I perused that manual, and per its instructions (no other choice here), I accessed "expert" mode. I bought this product because, though I do know a bit about wireless networking, I am no "expert"; it's not my field of expertise. This new recommended pushing of various virtual buttons resulted in shutting down my entire internet connnection from the sheetrock outward. My fault? Maybe. I do not know. I gave the unit three stars. Why not five? The unit is shipped with an "easy install" guide (and nothing more--which implies that nothing more is needed). Why not one star? I can't claim that I had the expertise to install it in the first place--but a monkey would find manageable the included instruction manual. (I'm a college professor--I would rather go without this gadget at this point).I spent too (two days) long with this, and I still have the tape roll in front of me from when I boxed this thing up for the return mail tomorrow.I'm back on the internet. (With a toothpick, I manually reset everything--modem, router--from the wall out). Unless you are an expert, you might just experience what I did, too. Or you might get a plastic dud.Consider this before buying.

After reading all the reviews on the difficulty to set up WAP3205, I was hesitated to buy it at the beginning. However, I was so fed up with the poor range of the ATT Wireless modem in the house and decided to give it a try. I had read the great reviews by J. Ferguson and Anonymouse several times and gotten a rough idea how to set it up, but still felt it could be challenging for me. Today, I received WAP3205 and was surprised by how easy to set it up to work as a Universal Repeater. It took me less than 10 minutes by following the on screen instructions after connecting to WAP3205. It seems that ZyXEL has listened to all the complaints on the difficulty in setting up their product and created a straightforward 3-step on screen instruction. Here is what I did to set up WAP3205.1. I changed my laptop computer Ethernet IP address to 192.168.1.3 so that I can connect and config WAP32052. Power up WAP3205 and connect it to the computer using the Ethernet cable provided3. Open FireFox or any other web browser and type in the address: 192.168.1.24. I immediately connected to WAP3205 and the login screen came up. I changed the default password to a new one5. Then, I was led to a screen to choose what function one would like to use. I chose Universal Repeater.6. Then WAP3205 will find all the Wireless networks in range (The wireless router has to broadcast the SSID). I chose my router.7. After imputing my wireless network password, WAP3205 will restart and the setup is done. Very easy and straightforward.8. Then I put WAP3205 in the middle of my house, Now, I can connect my wireless network anywhere in my house.I am really happy with the product including the easiness in setup.

I was able to set it up as a repeater just by plugging it into my PC and using the wizard that popped up (on a Windows 7 machine). In the same way as described in other posts, I was also able to manually change the IP address on my PC to the static address and get into the web interface via my browser. However, the issue I ran into was after the router reset itself with the repeater configuration. I couldn't get BACK into the web interface to change any of the settings. In my case, my wireless is set up using AES, so that's not a default in the settings and required me to access the web interace again to change it. To troubleshoot, I plugged the ethernet cable into my wireless router and then changed to a static IP on my PC and was able to access the web interface again. Hooray!Settings configured, I disconnected from the router and plugged the device in halfway between my router and PC but I still didn't see any signal boost. I right clicked on my network name from the tray and went into Status. I clicked Diagnose and when it was done, it said it had fixed a problem and now the signal stregth is at full bars.

I purchased this to use in tandem with a high end office router in a home environment. Using this only as a wireless access point it has performed flawlessly. The only issue I have had is the initial setup. The GUI is fairly intuitive (Though I am employed as a network engineer) but there are a few minor bugs. The one I hit involved setting the WPA compatibility mode when using WPA2 security. Though I enabled it my printer that only supports WPA still couldn't connect. I tried multiple workarounds but all failed. After turning it off for the workaround attempts I decided to give it one more go and upon re-enabling it suddenly it worked and all my devices could connect. I've had no further issues.Performance wise I can only say that throughput seems pretty good. I haven't run any definitive tests but I get good connection speeds and run streaming video regularly without issue with other traffic at the same time.If you don't mind the setup I would recommend this to others. It's hard to beat for the price.

I'm an audiophile and I stream both standard resolution (44khz x 16 bit) and high resolution (96/192 khz x 24 bit) digital music from my office on the second floor to my stereo on the first floor using wireless. The 192khz files were breaking up, apparently loosing synchronization and it's not practical to run a cat5 cable between floors. I decided to try out this device as a universal repeater. I'm a computer professional with many years of experience, yet the Quick Start Guide set me back for a while. Step 1 for "Set Up Your Wireless Network using the Web Configurator" says: "Set up your computer's IP address to be between 192.168.1.3 and 192.168.1.254 with a subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Connect the computer to the WAP3205"... HUH? Forget the quick start guide and go directly to the user manual on the provided disk. It gives you much better connection details and information about how to set a static IP address for your computer. Once you get past the poor documentation, this thing is great! All of my drop out problems are fixed.Don't let the documentation scare you. It's easy to set up once you understand the first connection step... Again, go directly to the user manual.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:For the price, I was skeptical of this thing. Considering most other wireless extenders and/or bridges were nearing the 70 or 80 dollar range (and that often is just for ONE function), I assumed there had to be something wrong here. However after a little bit of time setting it up, I got it working and it hasn't stopped working since. I have it in universal repeater mode to extend my wireless signal into my living room. I have my PS3 out there and blu-ray player, and while I was able to get signal, the strength was only about 30% on the PS3. I had the occasional drop out and stutter, so it could be rather inconvenient while watching netflix or other services online. Once I got this thing working, the strength jumped to 100% and I have full speed. My blu-ray player ONLY has wired, and I didn't want to spend 60 bucks to get the special adapter. I didn't know if I could use the ZyXEL as a bridge too while in universal repeater mode, so I gave it a shot and voila! My blu-ray player has internet now too. I'm very happy with this little guy. I've had it running for 2 weeks or so with no problems. If I have any I'll edit this post.The hardest part was setting it up, but once I figured out how to access the interface on the unit it was no problem. If you're not computer savvy, that might be an adventure, but there's plenty of help here and online.UPDATE (March 9 2013): I tossed it.It developed a problem I had heard about on forums. Eventually, the unit just wouldn't work reliably. The connection would drop off and would only work for maybe an hour at a time. Unplugging the thing and plugging it back in would re-establish the connection, but within a short amount of time it would stop working again. I tried a few full resets, even had new internet service installed just recently with a whole new wireless access point for this thing to read from...no dice.So it was a great unit for a little less than a year, but eventually it became more trouble than it was worth. If you need a quick fix, this might be worth it. But if you're looking for something to last, look elsewhere. Thankfully my new modem has a wide enough wireless signal to where I don't need this as desperately.

I purchased this to extend my wireless LAN signal. With my modem/router located in an upstairs office, but the main house downstairs, I needed my Magic Jack base phone/answering machine to be relocated downstairs to be more in the center of the house - and more able then to broadcast its DECT 6.0 signal to the five remote handsets located in various rooms.This does the job in spades. I followed the directions (although my home network is on 192.168.0.1 and I had to tell my laptop to use the 192.168.1.1 convention in order to access the device and configure the setting I wanted), the setup was relatively simple and the result is exactly what I hoped for. I plugged my Panasonic phone/answering machine base unit into the back of this unit, and it is happily covering about a 5000 SF range now, plus in a better location for noticing the flashing red "Message" light"......This might present a 'challenge' for a novice unfamiliar with the terminology explaining various setup options, but this device is really flexible - can be an access point, a client, or both - as a repeater.

Purchased this unit to replace a failing Hawking wireless network extender. After one month, it has frequent dropouts (can gain access to the wireless network by "joining" network again...should not need to do so). Other issues are minor annoyances: inability to create a "pure 801.11n" network (only b/g or b/g/n) being the biggest one.Not impressed by this unit in spite of the write up and high grades from other Amazon users. I don't think my networking situation is unusual or out of the ordinary, and I don't think my networking skills are deficient. I do believe this product does not operate well in ordinary home networking environments.EDIT: I used this piece of crap for three months. As I said before, I bought it because I thought the lower ratings were associated with people who didn't know as much about networking/setup.Dropping the rating on it down to one star. When I replaced it, it was giving me great wireless in five minute blocks. I would have to reconnect to the network every few minutes just to stay online. I don't need that aggravation and neither do you. Stay away from this cheap junk.

This device works and allows me to get internet in my inlaw unit, however it cuts out every 30 min - 1 hr at which point to get it to work again I have to turn the wifi off on my computer and reconnect. This is super annoying, but at least I have internet in my inlaw now.UPDATE: Every few months it completely stops working and I have to manually set it up again. In addition to this it does cut out fairly frequently, at least once an hour. I really hate my ZyXEL range extender, but what else can I do? I need internet to reach the inlaw unit which is the back yard of the main house I live in. I wish there was a better solution. I deducted 1 star but I also don't know if any other range extenders are better. Perhaps these devices just suck in general?UPDATE 03/25/2013: I spoke with the company and installed a software update, this still did not fix the problem. I am hoping they will replace the device but I have not heard back from them yet. We will see. I can only get the device to work when it is plugged into a computer at this point. Right now I plugged my old netbook into the device and just left it connected. A sad fix indeed but it is getting me by at the moment. Once disconnected from a computer (via ethernet cable) my Zyxel device will die within an hour or so, at which point I will need to reconnect with it via ethernet cable to get it to work again. It now gets just 1 star.

I needed a wireless repeater because my house has a lot of walls between the router and where I need the signal to travel. So of course, I search on Amazon to see what I could find. I admit, I almost passed this thing up just by looking at the price. Surely it must be double that to be any good. I was very wrong indeed.Once I got it, I connected it with the included ethernet cable, set my IP to 192.168.1.3, fired up my browser and directed it to 192.168.1.2. Once I clicked the login link (the default password was already in the password field) and logged in, I got a screen that wanted me to change my password. Then It asked what mode I wanted. The one I wanted was already selected, so on I went to the next screen.It then asked me for wireless network details and established a connection in short order. Once I clicked the Go link a couple screens later, it rebooted and that was almost it.Since it was recently discovered that WPS is vulnerable to a brute force attack, I disabled that, changed the IP address to something else outside my DHCP range and gave the settings a quick check over without using the wizard (or eazy123 as they call it). That's when I noticed one more small issue.Although the password for my network was right for the repeater to connect to the router, it wasn't the same for the network the repeater was creating. This was causing computers on the other side of my house to not see any improvement in signal. The reason might be that I have a fairly complex WiFi password with punctuation, because the punctuation I used wasn't in the password. Once I added it, everything was golden.It's true that this device is only 2.4GHZ, but I'm still getting 108Mbps which equates to around 13.5MBps. Still a lot faster than most home users' internet connections. Also, my network transfers seem to be faster now that I have better signal on the other side of my house.Yes, you might have to be a whiz to get a lot of things done outside the Eazy123 setup, but a quick Google should help you with mostly anything you have trouble with. I definitely recommend this product. It is quite the find.

I needed a wireless connection for Sony Bravia in the family room but did not want to buy the wireless adapter from Sony because it was expensive and it would have been for use on a single device and maybe even only on a particular model of Sony TV.My primary (or master) wireless router, at the other end of the house, needed to be close to the modem and other devices in the study room. I tried to hook up another wireless router to the TV and, of course, it did not work because the router to be connected to the TV needed to be a client of the primary wireless router. After looking at all the offerings by Amazon, I realized that there was NOT much of a choice for a router that could be configured as a Client. ZyXel WAP 3205 was it! The fact that it also functions as a Range Extender and as an Access Point was like icing on the cake.I wish other Wireless Router manufacturers would realize that a router can also be required to be a Client of another wireless router on the network. ZyXel WAP 3205 deserves 5 stars because the manufacturer understands user needs for router configuration as a client, a requirement that is totally ignored by most other wireless router manufacturers.

All I can say about the ZyXEL WAP 3205 is that I should have bought the Netgear Universal WN3000RP Wi-Fi Range Extender first because the Netgear Extender is easy to set up and it stays connected.I followed all the instructions (Windows 7) to use it as a repeater and it worked for about a day. Then I would see the little yellow ! over the wireless icon in my taskbar which meant I had to re-install it. I did this half a dozen times. I bought this because I have a ZyXEL wireless router (PK5000Z) and thought they would communicate better being the same brand.To be fair I have to mention that I did not call Tech Support about it. I thought I knew enough about Networking to get this to work but not in this case. I know I'm not too far away from the wireless router base and I did everything I was supposed to.Please reply if you know why this happens. Thanks.

Just bought this and so far it works great! Amplifies the signal in my 5,000 sq.foot house very nicely. Agree with others - confusing to set up. I use Linux as my main operating system and my company's network administrator helped me set this up in no time. For Linux users, use this command in the terminal:linux-h1xo:~ #: ifconfig eth0:1 192.168.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0That will set your computer's IP to 192.168.1.10. You can substitute any number after 192.168.1.. I arbitrarily chose 10. Once you do that, open up your browser and type: 192.168.1.2 per the instruction manual. That will take you to ZyXel's control panel and you follow the instructions from there pretty easily. Find the router you already are using and have the ZyXel point to that device and you have your range extender set up. My purpose was to use this as a range extender and not as a stand alone access point. So far, works great!This command was a fast shortcut. I realize it's for Linux users only and not Mac or Windows users.Hope this helps!Brad

I bought this to hook up my Dish satellite receiver to the internet so that I can stream the Blockbuster@Home service. I set this up last night when I got it and it literally took FIVE MINUTES. That's it! I read a lot of the comments here about how tough it would be to setup and the multiple steps required. I think the company updated the firmware on the device, since it now guides you through an initial setup. Here's the steps I took:- Placed it in its permanent location behind some of my home theater components and plugged in the power- Plugged the supplied ethernet cable into the LAN 1 port on the router and the other end into my laptop- Changed the IP address of my laptop. The steps for this are different depending on your operating system, but its super easy and it explains how to do it in the manual.- Opened up a web browser session and entered 192.168.1.2 into the address bar- This is when it gets interesting. It brings up the router login page (default password is 1234) and then prompts you to change your password. After this, it gives you a few different options for how you want the router to function. I chose Client Mode. It then presented a site survey of the available wireless networks. I selected mine, entered my WPA password info, and clicked OK.- The router then resets itself and tells you setup is complete- Then I changed my IP address back to automatic configuration- To check everything was working before hooking it into my Dish receiver, I unplugged it and then plugged it back into my laptop. It instantly got assigned an IP address. I opened up a web browser session and ran a speed test. It appears to be just as fast as the wireless on my laptop. So, no noticeable degradation in speed!- Plugged the router into my Dish receiver, and it worked great!Obviously since I set it up last night I can't yet comment on reliability. I will update this review if the thing ever gives me any trouble.

I bought the ZyXEL WAP3205 to broaden the range of my Verizon Fios modem's wireless signal. Set up is simple, but can take forever if you don't know how to change your internet settings. It took me several times until I could finally reach the login page. Once I got the login page I was up and running in just a few minutes. (There are some great reviews here that will get you setup.) My iPad still has issues connecting to the internet once I'm up and running but when I unplug the WAP3205 and plug it back in, it seems to find the signal again and performs as it should. When the product works, it's great, but it loses a star for confusing setup and it loses another star because I have to keep rebooting it for it to keep the signal going constantly.

I bought this device to function as a wireless access point. I wanted a layer 2 device so that I can track the IP's on my network. The device is really neat, but leaves a bit to be desired.Pro's:1. Fast and reliable device. I have never had to reboot the device because of network slowness issues.2. Decent Security Features. WPA2, MAC Filtering, Able to use a Raduis Server for Auth, WPA2, ability to hide SSID, and also to have multiple SSID's.3. Neat features such as QOS, WPS.4. One can use the device for different functions, such as a wireless repeater, bridge, or access point.Cons:1. The firmware updates are through an unencrypted FTP protocol.2. No way to associate MAC address connecting to the device to IP address. Makes it difficult to track user behavior.3. The logs are pretty good, but you cannot forward logs to a syslog server.4. http only management login. This means the password that you use to manage the device is in clear text over your network. If the device supported https, SSH or some way to perform encrypted Administration, I would have given the device 4-5 stars.

I use this thing for several devices for over a year now including: ipad2, android tablet, kindle fire HD, Nexus 4 phone, work PC laptop, friend's phones, and it works fine on all of them. Setting it up and assigning a password wasn't hard, I don't even remember doing it, I just followed the instructions. I've set up much more technically challenging things like a DVR that was obviously made in China with poorly translated documents, and so compared to that, this was a breeze to set up, at least the manual was obviously written by someone who speaks English! I'd recommend this product.To anyone saying this is hard to set up, just get one of your tech savvy friends to do it, I don't think you're going to find any of the other similar products to be much easier to set up.

First of all thanks to Amazon reviewers for sharing the knowledge!! The documentation is really horrible. After the quick setup as universal repeater to my DIR-655 router (access point), I thought everything was working fine (easy to get the impression) until I realized that connections are being dropped at random interval and it appeared that my whole wireless network became flakey. After hours and hours of work, finally everything is working as expected. In order to make it work, I had to do following additional configuration changes:1) Under Configuration > Network > Wireless LAN > Security, set group key update timer to 0.2) Under Configuration > Network > Wireless LAN > Advanced, changed channel bandwidth to 20 MHz (from 20/40) to match my access point router configuration. Also changed Output power to 10% (from 100%). Since my target devices are close to the repeater and I felt that having 100% power may be causing some conflict with access point.3) Under Configuration > Network > Wireless LAN > Universal Repeater, I did provide MAC address (optional) of the access point.4) Under Configuration > Network > LAN > IP, changed the IP address (from default 192.168.1.2) to something that matches my network pattern (but still outside DHCP client range of your access point). This enables me to access the web configuration tool without the cable and IP address change headache.5) Under Configuration > Network > LAN > IP, changed Gateway IP address to your access point IP address and First DNS server to "user defined" with IP address of your access point.This product is definitely a steal for the price. Now Netflix (through home theatre wireless N connection to the repeater), Xbox 360 gaming (wired connection to the repeater) respond/work lot faster and smoother!!!! Xbox was earlier connected to G client. I couldn't be happier at the end.

I bought one of these to provide network access to a separate building. I have one device that is a wired device and another that is wireless. So I set the Zyxel to be a Universal Repeater. I kept having problems with the wireless device disconnecting after 20 or so minutes of network access. Then I would have to unplug the Zyxel's power and plug it back in to get another 20 minutes. I did some reading and found that others were having the same problem with this range extender.So I did some experimenting and set the Zyxel to Client Mode and used a separate wireless router that I had laying around to provide the wifi access to the location. (I actually connected the wireless router right to the back of the Zyxel with a patch cable, "Lan" port to "Lan" port, and then disabled the router's DHCP server.)This configuration has been working well for the last couple of weeks. No more wireless disconnects.It's a shame to have to do a workaround like this but I got the Zyxel so cheap that I hate to complain. In Client Mode it a pretty slick device! I have not tried Access Point mode.I didn't think it was hard to set up. I've seen devices that have been much more difficult.It is a bit strange to have the current weather on the login page. Never saw that before on a device like this.

ZyXEL wireless N access point ethernet client seems easy to incorporate into our wireless circuit. Yet, even with the help of a knowledgeable person helping me, it wouldn't work. I called the company to get assistance. While the person was extremely helpful and generous with his time, it still doesn't work. I need to call back until it works. Right now, when the wireless apparatus is activated, it appears to be in sync, but nothing loads on my computer, iPhone or iPad. This is very disappointing.

I don't know what other reviewers are talking about.I have this WAP 3205 set up at my second room and it's in second floor my cable internet modem (Charter) is at downstairs and I set up a mini office at my second room.The main reason I bought this is because I have a magic jack telephony (2nd version) I need it to plug it to a LAN in order to work and connect my fax machine on it. Now it's working very very good, my magic jack is working and I have a very strong wi-fi connection my phone used to have a single bar of wi-fi here in my room at second floor now its overflowing. A magnificent piece of machine.A must buy.Well recommended.Oh yeah I bought it here in Amazon.com as refurbished for $38.99 and it came in like brand new, well packed.Thank you amazon.com

I bought this product to act as a WiFi range extender. The documentation was indeed terrible and unusable, although the various online forums are useful. But anyway, the two massive drawbacks for me are: 1) you have to assign a fixed IP address to your computer to be able to connect and configure the ZyXEl. Having used many similar products in the past which can assign a dynamic address to your computer, this is a first to me. I'll attribute this to some ZiXEL engineering quest to pure technical awesomeness. 2) Maybe this is only my product, but every time I restart my WiFi router or cable modem, The ZyXEL is no longer passing traffic to the Internet although its bright green LEDs indicate that all its wired and wireless connections are operating at top capability. This is when I have to reset the ZyXEL to factory defaults, set a fixed IP address to computer, connect it to the ZyXEL and configure it again. As I've gone through this cycle 4 times, I will apply California's Prop 184, a.k.a "3 strikes, you're out". I will be selling this thing and purchasing a range extender from a reputable vendor which can get the job done in a normal, seamless fashion. Never mind the extra dollars: they are worth every minutes of my time
