It took me four and half hours to set it up as a wireless repeater, literally. Well, four hours for researching and trouble shooting and only about 20 min or so to customize it.My main router is a D-Link Dir-655. For the longest time no matter what I tried, WAP3205 would refuse to connect. It was after countless google searches, reading through the product manuals for both WAP3205 and Dir-655 that I finally realized:1) I need to downgrade the firmware on WAP3205 to 1.00(BFR.4)C0 (released 06-23-2010), thanks to another Amazon review of this product. Newer firmware will actually cripple Dir-655's wireless signal that no other devices will work on the same network.2) For MAC address filter on Dir-655, WAP3205 reports MAC address as ***:A5:18, but the actual MAC address reported that was connected to Dir-655 is ***:A5:19! I have no idea why is that, also Dir-655 reports that WAP3205 as some kind of android device. Anyways, once the MAC filter was correctly set, WAP3205 was finally able to obtain a signal from Dir-655 wirelessly.3) Initially I was using a laptop to connect to WAP3205 for configuration so I had to set the ethernet port of my laptop to 192.168.1.3 and subnet mask as 255.255.255.0. Otherwise I wasn't able to connect to WAP3205 through wired connection at all. After the set up, I changed the IP address of WAP3205 to fit the range defined in Dir-655 so it's easier to configure in the future. Now all my wireless devices (computers, tablets, phones) can access WAP3205's web configurator. After the initial hurdles the rest of the setup is rather easy, very similar to a typical wireless router.I wish there were more specific warnings or caveats about the set-up that is upfront from the manufacture. Even though I did a very thorough research and was mentally prepared for the long ordeal for setting-up, I wasn't expecting to stay up till 2am for this :(EDIT: 1-24-2013.The WAP3205 has been running well for the past month or so, not much issues except once. I decided to move it to a better location only to realize the power adapter wasn't able to reach the wall outlet, so I unplugged without letting the boot up process to finish. Big mistake! Now everything is wiped and I'm back to factory reset state (the only thing kept was the firmware). Needless to say I had to reset everything. Fortunately the MAC address filter on Dir-655 was intact so the network was set up fairly easily. So for future users of WAP3205, if you decide to move it, at least wait for the boot up process is finished before unplug it! The best way to check is to run the web configurator, if it's accessible then you know the boot up process is finished.

I purchased this through Amazon since the reviews seemed good and I needed it as a wireless repeater. I have set up my home network through trial, error, and then read forums online, so I am not overly advanced, but not a beginner.First to the mundane items -- packaging and shipment was good. Everything included in the box including a short ethernet cable. I did not need one except for the initial setup, but I always think it is nice that they send one along. Power cord was of good length and it is the thin "sidways" plug so it fits in my long, thin power strip and only takes up one plug (bonus for that!)Setup for me was better then the previous posts. Perhaps they have changed the setup menu, but that part was easy *IF* you know how to change your IP address. The manual is poor in this regard. The one star that I took off is for the manual. It does tell you on the first page the IP address of the device 192.168.1.2 and the password (1234).It then tells you how to set up a WPS connection so devices can talk to your WAP3205. I think there could be some steps before that, but...Page 7 tells you how to log into the WAP3205 and configure it. It clearly tells you to set your computer IP address between 192.168.1.3 and 192.168.1.254 and set your subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. Then it tells you to open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.2. And this is exactly what you have to do. One star would be added if they gave you instructions on how to do that in Windows 7, Vista, etc. The steps are clearly shown in the reviews below, so I did not have a problem connecting, but I think they should be included by the vendor.I will note that a disk was included in the package. I did not run it. It does say on the CD that there is a user's guide on the CD. Also, on the last page of the english instructions it lists an email address to give feedback on the manual (I would probably give 1/2 a star back for this) and it tells you that there is more info on the CD. So perhaps I am being harsh to take the star away (but it is my star and I can do with it as I want!)I plugged the device into my router with the provided cable, changed my computer IP address and logged in.Setup was actually very easy once I logged into the device. I was prompted to change the password of the device. I then had a simple menu to choose Universal Repeater Mode, Access Point Mode, and Client Mode. It was a radio box menu and I selected Universal Repeater Mode and hit Next. The manual is more than adequate at this point. It gives pictures and tells you what the selections indicate. I did not have to go into any advanced settings, maintenance, etc. Just a simple follow the on screen instructions. The setup found my home network, detected the security format, prompted me for my key, and then rebooted the device. Very easy and simple. I unplugged everything and moved it downstairs. My iPad signal (upper left) has a reading of -75 to -80 when I connect to my network downstairs (-40 would be good, -100 would be no signal). I plugged in the WAP3205 in that room and watched my iPad signal. About 30 seconds later, the signal strength improved to -47. I opened a couple apps and everything worked fine. No more dead spots downstairs and I can go out on my patio and use it.I will have to see if it drops signals or acts funny over time, but for now I am very happy. Total set up time took me about the same amount of time it took me to write this review. My rating: 4.49 stars

This is an impressive piece of networking gear, particularly for the price. It has a great deal of functionality, some of it unusual. However, I have to warn you: the documentation is terrible. When the other reviewers said the documentation is poor, boy, they weren't kidding. The Zyxel can be configured to act as an access point, wireless client, or universal repeater. Let me explain these modes:=> If you already have (wired) Internet access (e.g., DSL or a cable modem), you can connect the Zyxel in access point mode, and then you'll be able to connect to the Internet via the wireless network from throughout your home. This is probably the most common use of this kind of gear, and for this purpose, the Zyxel will probably do the trick just fine.=> If you already have a wireless network set up in your home, and you want to connect another device (e.g., a gaming console) to the wireless network, but the other device doesn't itself have wireless capability, you can use the Zyxel as a wireless client. For instance, imagine you have DSL/cable modem Internet access, connected to a wireless access point, in one room of your house. On the other side of your house, you have a gaming console, and you want to connect it to the Internet, but the gaming console doesn't have 802.11 wireless capability. What to do? You can plug the Zyxel into the gaming console via Ethernet. The Zyxel will connect wireless to your existing access point, and provide Internet access to your gaming console. See other reviews here for information about how to configure the Zyxel in wireless client mode.=> If you already have a wireless network set up in your home, but it doesn't reach all of the rooms in your home, you can use the Zyxel as a universal repeater to extend the range of your existing wireless network. This is sometimes also known as a "range extender". For instance, say you have an existing access point in a room on the north side of your house, but its signal isn't powerful enough to reach the south side. Stick the Zyxel halfway in the middle and configure it to be a universal repeater. The Zyxel will receive the wireless signal from your existing access point and re-broadcast it, so that you can have wireless connectivity from the south side of your house. (You don't need to plug the Zyxel into your cable modem or DSL modem; it receives Internet connectivity via a wireless connection to your existing access point, and extends the range of your existing network.) This is pretty awesome. That's the positive. The negative is that the Zyxel is hard to configure, and the documentation is lousy. The manual that comes with the Zyxel is extremely sparse and doesn't describe how to use most of the device's functionality. The manufacturer has been spamming the comments section of other reviews to say they've fixed this with a new version of the manual, but that's a bit misleading. The printed manual you receive with the Zyxel still sucks. If you know the special URL, you can download the online version of the manual, which is better, but you have to know where to get it (see the comments section of other reviews), and it is only available online. Why couldn't the manufacturer at least include a reference to it in the printed manual that comes with the Zyxel? Sheesh. As a result, to use the advanced functionality (e.g., client mode and the universal repeater), you probably need to have some knowledge of networking and a bit of patience -- otherwise you may be in for a frustrating experience.Even with the extended manual available online, configuring the thing is a bit tricky. Other reviews have described how to configure it in client mode; I'll explain how to configure it in universal repeater mode:1. You'll need to know what channel your existing 802.11 access point is using. Find out, e.g., from its web configuration interface (you'll have to see the documentation of your existing access point; that'll depend up on the access point). Jot down the SSID and wireless channel. If you use WEP or WPA or WPA2, jot down the key and which of those you use.2. Power up the Zyxel. Connect a laptop to the Zyxel via Ethernet cable. Manually set the IP address of your laptop to a static IP address 192.168.1.3. (See other reviews for details of how to do this, if you don't know.) Fire up your browser and go to [...]. Enter in the default password (1234).3. In the Zyxel's web configuration interface, click on "expert mode". Click on the icon for Maintenance on the left, go to Sys OP Mode, change to universal repeater mode, and click "apply". Wait for it to reboot.4. Connect to the Zyxel's web configuration interface again. Click on the icon for Configuration on the left, click on Wireless LAN, then go to the tab for Universal Repeater. Enter in the universal repeater parameters: tick the checkbox to enable universal repeater. Enter in the SSID of your existing access point (which you noted in step 1 above). Enter in

Finally this product works as intended and am very happy but it took a while to set up when it should have taken me just a few minutes. After going through the set up the wifi signal kept dropping every few hours. I called Zyxel support but it was not much help. Had to figure out by myself why product was not working as it should (simple answer at the end of this post).I wanted to use the Zyxel as a universal repeater since my main router is too far from my office. When I called support they told me to use another router name for the Zyxel instead of the name of my main router. Big mistake. Called support another time to see if another rep could help me but same result. I was trying to link a Samsung DVD player to the Zyxel and I kept getting the WiFI protected Setup demand on the Samsung so I would push the wps button on the router and nothing would happen. The verdict from both Zyxel and Samsung support was that the router did not support this Samsung DVD Blu-ray player but I digress...Then I checked the driver to make sure I had the latest driver. I had v6 and the latest driver is v7. Thank you Zykel support for not asking me if I had the latest driver installed as your first question when I contacted you. So I went to the Zyxel driver page (which is not that easy to find) and downloaded the latest driver. No excuse for Zyxel to ship router with outdated driver when latest driver came out last November. After installing the driver, I heeded the advice of a previous Zyxel 3205 post (Alan Isherwood on March 13) and changed a few settings as he advised. Now the router works flawlessly except that I cannot set the correct time. It won't let me but it's alright since I don't plan to turn the router on and off.ps. Samsung DVD player connected to the internet right away after router driver update.Support (800) 255-4101 then #5 and again #5.

I bought 2 of these hoping to make one an access point upstairs and the other one a universal repeater downstairs. I spent all weekend messing with them with mixed results. They would work great for a while, then everything would freeze up and my devices could not connect.Well it turns out one of the units was defective. It would work great for a while, then it would die and devices could no longer connect even after they were restarted. The one that was defective was being used as the access point, and the other one never would register correctly even after following all the instructions on the ZyXEL site.So I boxed up the defective one and used the good one as an access point. It turns out the coverage is good enough that it doesn't appear that I need the repeater anyway. I used the good one to watch movies through amazon prime over a wireless Bluray player, and it worked as well as it had when the Bluray was wired to the network. I also did tests on other services using another Bluray, and made sure I could connect to a game console and smartphone. All appear to be working fine all over the house, now that the defective unit is no longer being used.So I guess I'll have to wait a while to make sure the unit I kept is going to work. Right now it's fine and coverage throughout the house is great. Setup is easy enough, and there don't appear to be any issues with devices getting kicked off the network. I'm just kind of wary because 1 of the 2 units I bought was defective, but defective in a way that it appeared to work at first but then after 30 minutes or so it quit working. That was difficult to troubleshoot, and I hope the unit doesn't go through a quick test and end up being sold again to someone else.UPDATE 11/02/2012: The access point was working as usual, but I decided to upgrade part of my network and changed to an EnGenius EAP350. I had always had the problem of my cell phone not reconnecting to the ZyXEL access point, but I thought it was my cell phone acting up after I turned off and later restarted the wireless (I put it in airplane mode when playing games so I don't have to see ads). Other devices seemed to work OK, no real complaints except that every once in a while I would have to reboot the access point. I had considered getting some kind of remote control plug that would allow me to power cycle it from my desk. I had also bought a ZyXEL for my very technologically challenged parents, to serve as a wireless repeater for their weak wireless router. They had the same problem with an iPad - sometimes it just wouldn't connect back up and they would go power cycle both the iPad and the ZyXEL and it would start working.I'll also add that I always keep up with firmware updates, so they were kept current.Well after taking the ZyXEL out of my network and using the EnGenius, I have found that my cell phone wasn't the problem. It now works fine, and doesn't have to be power cycled after coming back from airplane mode to get the wireless to work again. The only conclusion I can reach is that it was the ZyXEL, possibly in combination with a finicky cell phone to be fair, that was causing the issue. So I'm knocking my review down from 4 to 3 stars. I have a ZyXEL ZyWALL USG 50 that I have absolutely zero problems with. It just seems that this particular product is not as well made as their others.

Update: The problems discussed below were a combination of my misunderstanding the directions and a glitch in the computer I was using. A phone call to the tech support got it set up. He walked me through the setup on the computer I was using; when that wouldn't hold the static IP address, he suggested we use a different computer, which did the trick. So, I'm a happy camper now on the set-up. Haven't had a chance to use it to see how it actually works.***So far, I have a brick. The user guide does not contemplate the possibility that someone setting this up might already have a wireless router and have to work around that device's setup, so it doesn't give any instructions on how to do that. If I were a techie, I suppose I would know. But I'm not.I am trying to set it up in Client Mode, to connect wirelessly with my Cisco WRT400N router. The Cisco router is set up on a "permit only" basis. I have entered the WAP 3205's MAC address on the "permit" list, so if I ever succeed in configuring the WAP 3205 it should be able to connect to my home network. That pretty much exhausts my technical expertise. The Cisco is using WPA securityMy computer's IP address is already within the range to which the instructions say to reset the IP address, so I didn't re-set that.I am using Windows XPWhen I follow the setup instructions in the user guide, I get to the point where I plug the WAP 3205 into my computer, open IE, and type in the IP address, but ....At that point, the Cisco asks for my user name and password. I tried removing the cable from the Cisco to the computer, but the computer then connects wirelessly to the Cisco, so the Cisco still comes up as the device asking for my user name and password.I tried plugging it into a different computer that connects wirelessly to the Cisco, but that shuts off the wireless connection so I have no internet connection to do the configuration on the WAP 3205.Should I unplug the Cisco and plug the WAP 3205 into my modem? That seems like something I would do only if the WAP 3205 was going to be my access point, which it is not.Do I have to change the Cisco's IP address?Any other suggestions from the techies who have installed this product?

Overall this is a good little feature-rich device but use just the wireless access point features. It was quick to setup but was definitely a time that you wanted to read the fine manual (RTFM (PG version)). It wasn't as easy to setup as the CISCO WES610N that I purchased at the same time BUT it is also feature rich.I have had it up for a few days and haven't experienced major problems with it. We will see if it stands up to the test of time and gives me 3-4 years of service like my Cisco Linksys devices that are still working 4 1/2 years later.Nerd Alert - I am a nerd at heart and utilize geek speak way too often. I try to remember that the Amazon audience contains friends, family, and strangers that may or may not know IT.PROS:* Feature Rich -The ZyXEL is 1/2 the price of the comparable Cisco device but it has a much more feature rich set of wireless capabilities. It supports WPS, allowing for easy setup. It supports WDS, allowing you to configure a network that allows you to carry your laptop from room to room in a large house without sacrificing much speed if setup correctly. It can access as a repeater if needed.* Cabling -The ZyXEL includes the power supply and a network cable (CAT-5). It supports a standard called MDI/MDIX, which means that you won't need a crossover cable if you connect it to a switch.* Wireless Distribution Service -You can make this part of your existing network using WDS, or Wireless Distribution Service, or simply configure it as an access point. I just removed two old Linksys routers from being WDS nodes since replacing my old Actiontec 802.11a/b/g with an Actiontec 802.11b/g/n wireless router. Eventually I will get around to using the ONI port and setting up a network with DD-WRTCONS:* LAN ports on the back are are 10/100 -While the router notes that it supports connection speeds up to 300MbPS it only has two (2) 10MbPS/100MbPS RJ-45 (LAN) connections. Technically you may never truly realize the full throughput available with this device. This is not unlike other wireless access points, such as the Cisco WET610N (single 10/100) or the Cisco WES610N (quad port 10/100 for $10 more). I did what any good geek would do; used it as an excuse to purchase an 8-port Netgear 10/100/1000 switch to replace my 5-port 10/100 switch in my office/lab with the computers and Hyper-V lab systems. I am going to use the Cisco product downstairs with my home server and VMWare ESXi box.* Setup may be difficult for the average home user -I most certainly RTFM'd and reading the manual helped. It did take a quick configuration of my network card in order to even get to the point I could setup the device. The Cisco devices use an APIPA address, which makes setup easier. Why? APIPA is that 169.254.#.# address that your computer gets when it connects to a network that doesn't give out addresses. This allows you to easily setup the Cisco WES610N.

Disclaimer: I am not connected with/to ZyXEL except as a customer.I'm a ZyXel fan although they tend not to have the best documentation, the documentation for the 3205-x is the best that I've seen from ZyXEL. Know that there are several WAP3205 (ZyXel 300) models with varying number of LAN ports on the back. My unit had 2 LAN ports, some models could have 4.After having looked at this for the last 24 hrs, I thought that I would put in a quick review (tend not to if I wait).Originally, I suggested that this unit could be used as a universal repeater and it can be. In this mode, devices connected to the unit via the LAN connection do not talk to the WiFi network, they seem to be for configuration purposes only. The original application actually requires "Client" functionality. This box also functions as a "WiFi Client" where the ZyXEL 300 is connected to a device via a wired network connection and the ZyXEL 300 provides a WiFi link to the existing Wi-Fi network. I have not tested it with 2 LAN simulataneous network connections although there are two ports.Step-by-step instructions to setup as a repeater were unnecessary for me, but I found step-by-step instructions useful converting to "Client" mode.In "Client" mode, device(s) connect to the ZyXEL 300 with a separate subnet than what is used between the 300 and the WiFi network. This is causing an issue with IPMAC security but I've not looked into resolving it (yet). It would seem that multiple devices could share the WiFi network connection, e.g. Provide WiFi connections to wired (only) network devices (e.g. printer, scanner, etc). The unit is small and surprisingly lightweight. There are two mounting holes on the rear for hanging on a wall with a small (guessing =<1/4") screw.I've not yet performed capacity testing to see how well it talks to the Cisco 4410N that's GigE connected to the network. The box contains the unit, power adapter (narrow (<1" wallwart, seems snug for a 7/8" opening) and a single, maybe 1m, (yellow) RJ-45 network cable.I've already purchased a 2nd unit (from Amazon :-)

As many other reviewers pointed out the device is good but the setup is painful. I would not recommend anyone to buy this product unless you have little bit tech knowledge about the routers and network setup. I set this up in CLIENT MODE to connect my Sony TV using the LAN cable. Here is what I did to setup ZyXel with WPA2-PSK AES security. It works flawless with WEP security. only for WPA/WPA2 it is having issue. Please follow below steps if you are using latest security in your wireless router and Zyxel1. Please check the earlier reviews to setup the ip address to 192.168.1.3 to access the admin page of the router. (They explained really well how to access the admin page using default password 1234) Also select the the "client mode" from Sys Op menu to setup the client mode. Here is what you do after that2. Go to configuration and selects the WPS tab. You will see a PIN number. At this point you need another computer to open the admin page of your Wireless Router. ( Most router you can open the admin page using 192.168.1.1 ( please check manual) and the user id/password( might be your secure key))3. On your Wireless Routers admin page find the option for Enabling WPS(Wi-Fi Protected Setup) You may also find a button on your router for WPS. click that button or enable the WPS on admin page. Device will start search for client Wifi devices that you want to connect.4. On your ZyXel WEP tab, write down the pin number and press the button "Start PIN", the device will search for the WPS.5. After few seconds the Wireless Router will ask you to enter the Clinet Key. Pls enter the key that you note down on step 4. Some devices will let you enter the client key and start to authenticate the client device. You may need to check your routers manual how to set up the WPS device.6. Once the ZyXel and your router establishes connection, you will see your router on ZyXel's Wifi setup tab. You are all set now, remove the ip address from LAN to get ip automatically and disable your computer's wifi to check the LAN. Its works for me. It took 2 days to set this up so 4 stars. It would have been much helpful if Zyxel would copy some of these reviews here and attach to their manual.Good Luck. Hope this helps!!

Wireless N Access Point.ZyXEL 300 Mbps Wireless N Access Point, Ethernet Client, Universal Repeater, and Range Extender (WAP3205)Initially, I was thrown off by the previous reviews on this product (jimsrod and anonymouse) who used their laptop to configure this device. I tried doing it their way and I could not enable the IP address for the device. The manual for the product did not help either because the picture also showed linking it to your pc or laptop via ethernet cable.I almost gave up after an hour. Then I tried plugging the device directly to my LINKSys router and voila! The device was picked up by my pc and all my laptops on the wireless network. ( I had to add the MAC address to my router config to allow it to join my network). The packaging did not identify the MAC Address....I had to surmise it from the numbers under the device...I found it just under the PIN number. To configure the device, you have to open your web browser and type 192.168.1.2. (my router is the usual 192.168.1.1). When the web interface came up, I set it up using expert mode. There are four icons on your upper left panel -1. Dashboard - This shows you the info on your device. Make sure that at the bottom, LAN and WLAN are up.2. Monitor - There will be nothing there initially. Later it will have a log of how many times you accessed the web interface.3. Configuration - This is what you need to fill up with info. MAKE SURE YOU CLICK APPLY at bottom of each tab after you are done entering your info. GENERAL tab, I inputted my existing SSID or network name and the channel my router was using. SECURITY, I inputted the existing SSID and the security I was using for the wireless network. MAC FILTER, I added the MAC addresses of the wireless devices that will use the Zyxel signal. ADVANCED, I used the network mode 11/b/g/n to get the max 300Mbps. Also you may choose the channel. Qos, WPS and WPS STATION - I did not touch these because I don't use a USB dongle. SCHEDULING, I just clicked ON and Everyday on top. UNIVERSAL REPEATER, I entered my network SSID and the channel the router uses plus security mode. SITE SURVEY will show you all the available signals of various neighborhood networks.4. Maintenance - General. Leave it at 5 minutes of inactivity before it prompts you to login. Password Setup. Change the password here to something you will not FORGET. Time - Input the current date and if you use Daylight Savings time. Firmware upgrade. Backup/Restore (of your configuration) MAKE SURE YOU SAVE YOUR CONFIG.dat. Reset/Restart. Sys OpMode. Here I clicked Universal Repeater. Now I'm done and clicked logout. This Zyxel device is powerful and works like a charm when properly configured. And it is good value for the price I paid for it here at AMAZON. I just hope the manufacturers improve on their manual and add HELP comments for each category of the configuration tabs. I give it 4 stars!!!!
