Got this to extend the wireless range from the house out to the shop. Previous best connection strength was 2 bars, often just 1. I found it very easy to configure for this purpose (i.e. Universal Repeater) using the enclosed Quick Setup manual. After configuration, disconnected it from the DSL modem, moved it to the end of the house closest to the work shop and Bam! - went from 2 bars to 5 (100%). Very pleased indeed with this low cost solution.

I just purchased a refurbished unit - Version 1 -- with the latest firmware upgrade(6). After changing my computers ipv4 address to 192.168.1.3, I plugged the WAP3205 in, hooked up via ethernet cable and typed in the address 192.168.1.2 in my browser. After choosing Universal Repeated mode, the 3205 did almost everything automatically -- including detecting all the details of my wireless connection (SSID/Channel/Security Mode). All I had to do was type in my WPA2 password key, and check a box that instructed the repeater to utilize the original wireless defaults, and I was finished. The Zyxel rebooted, and I unplugged and moved it to where it was needed -- remembering to put my laptop's settings back to obtaining my IP address automatically. My wireless signal now reaches the areas where it had previously been too weak.I've held off on giving it five stars because I haven't been able to confirm its stability over time.I know there were a lot of reviews claiming that set up was too difficult. I did follow the excellent advise of a couple of previous reviewers, rather than going through the User Manual CD, which made things go much quicker. But I do think the newer firmware has made configuration a pretty easy task, once you've gotten into the WAP3205's Set Up page.

This works great for us! Our AT&T Uverse internet outlet is far from our Sony BDP-S370 wireless LAN ready blu-ray DVD player, so we thought we would have to string DSL wires around the room. But this product picks up a wireless signal and wires into the DVD player perfectly! Other reviews state that the set up is difficult, but I found it easy by following the manual. I just set it up, so I'll update the review if we have problems with the product later.

I wanted to wirelessly install iTunes from my Mac Pro to my Denon 4311Cl receiver. So I bought a wireless Netgear access point from Amazon. Cost was over $60. And the product did not perform well at all. I spent two whole nights and most of several days before sending it back to Amazon last Saturday. Thought I would try one other product before going to Best Buy and getting the two Apple products they guaranteed would work...for a cost of over $300 with tax. So I read reviews and decided to order the $41 ZyXEL. I have been somewhat skeptical because it has Windows 7 certification but was silent about Mac. Anyway it arrived this morning. Within 15 minutes I had it hooked up and working with Internet radio. Then I tested iTunes. And I can boot up my Mac Pro and not lose reception that I was experiencing with the Netgear access point. You have three ways to setup this ZyXEL and they recommend the repeater option if you are connecting to another device. I followed their lead and I am one happy puppy today! And of course my iTunes works with the Denon wirelessly now!!!I sent it back to Amazon today. After one day the same issues arose that happened with the Netgear. I know now that the issue is the cheap 2Wire624 modem/router supplied by AT&T for u-verse customers. I could not even get two iTunes to play before the second stopped. So this afternoon I installed Airport Extreme and Airport Express. iTunes played until it played the last song. So I have had internet radio streaming for some time. Not once has there been a skip or any interference. So if you are looking for what I believe is the better solution, just add Airport Extreme from your modem/router and then add Airport Express at your receiver... I may be too harsh in dropping my rating to one star... under a more powerful router it might perform just fine.

This router is independently rated at number two, and at a 10 (out of 10) for functionality. The number one rated device, has a 450 ft range, vs the Zyxel's 300, but costs $275. In my rather large house, with the DSL input in one corner, this router solved my problem of wifi coverage entirely. and will stream Netflix videos even to the most remote corners of the structure, and through multiple floors. Before placing it, I hooked it to my laptop, and had it setup in 5 minutes. Can't imagine an easier setup.

I purchased the ZyXEL WAP3205 Wireless N Access Point to be used strictly as an AP. I connected it to a cat53 ran to a building in my back yard about 200' and connected this unit to it for wireless access. The speeds are nice and I was able to successfully run two PS3 units running Black Ops on this one AP without a hitch. The other nice thing about this unit is that it comes with two ethernet ports so I can attached another device to the unit itself and didn't have to purchase another switch. A good many AP's have only one ethernet port. The 100mbps ethernet ports are plenty fast for my needs and I didn't expect them to run faster. If you simply need a wireless access point and plan to connect an ethernet cable to the WAP the setup is very simple and takes only a few minutes to configure. The WAP3205 does offer additional functionality but I didn't have a need for that. The cost of this unit, coupled with it's performance is a great buy! Configuring this unit for something other than what I'm using it for may be more difficult but setting it up as a simple WAP is a piece of cake.I will definitely purchase more products from these guys. I was worried if I had made the right purchase due to some of the bad reviews but luckily it turned out to be the right move.

I read reviews prior to purchasing the ZyXEL 300, and was a little worried about the set up. I was not to keen on changing my network IP addresses, so I went a different route. I turned the repeater on near my computer, and my computer could see it, but could not communicate due to the IP address issue. I clicked on the ZyXEL 300 found on my network, then properties, click on the TCP/IPv4, then properties, and entered my own IP address. It took a little time but it worked. Much easier then changing everything else to the ZyXel 300 address. The only reason I give it a 4 is because the range is not as good as advertise. I have a two story house, my office with my router is on one end, and the stairs on the other end. I swapped this unit with a Netgear, but still plugged the netgear in upstairs. Therefore, I have 2 repeaters, with an awesome signal. It is worth the money, and the 4 Ethernet inputs are a plus, but I don't use them.

I bought the device in order to put an industrial computer for which I am developing software on the network. A USB dongle would work but would be undesirable because it would require a driver to be installed. The industrial computer will be hard-wired when deployed. It's best if its configuration in testing is exactly the same as when deployed. A wireless bridge avoids having to install any software on it.I had been using a Linksys WET610N, but it got progressively less reliable and finally stopped working altogether. So, I quickly scanned the little booklet that came with the unit. Then, as directed, I plugged the ZyXEL into my MacBook Pro's LAN port (and turned off the AirPort to avoid confusion), reconfigured the Mac's ethernet adapter to have IP 192.168.1.42, and pointed Firefox at 192.168.1.2. The login page came up with the password already filled in. I logged in, and it performed a useless "network scan" and showed me a basically empty network diagram (no indication of any wireless networks within range or anything else that might clear up befuddlement). The Expert Mode link was the only thing that seemed to lead anywhere. But it was a confusing maze. All indications were that the device wanted to be an access point, not a bridge. Not wanting to send it back to Amazon, I read its box to reassure myself it *could* be a bridge. Finally, I clicked the last option under the last menu on the left (Maintenance / Sys Op Mode). I changed it from Access Point to Client Mode and clicked Apply, waited for it to reboot, and went back in in Expert Mode. Then I found Configuration / Network / Wireless LAN and clicked the Site Survey tab. It promptly found my 2.4 ghz network, along with several others belonging to the neighbors. Finally, progress! (I also have a 5 ghz network, but it did not find that -- good thing I wasn't expecting it to support 5 ghz!)So, I selected my network, clicked Add Profile, selected WPA2 / AES and pasted in my pass phrase (copied from the Mac's Keychain app). I clicked Activate, and my new network soon appeared in the Profile tab.Next, I opened the unit's LAN configuration and set it to use DHCP and get DNS "From ISP", which turned out to be from my router. After "applying" the above, I next changed my Mac's LAN adapter to use DHCP and restarted Firefox. Google promply appeared, along with my background image, thus proving the ZyXEL was now working, since the AirPort was still turned off.I logged onto my router (a D-Link DIR 655), located the ZyXEL in the list of connected computers (its MAC address starts with 40-4A-03), and configured a DHCP reservation for it, so that its IP would remain constant. Then I added an entry for it to the Mac's /etc/hosts so that I wouldn't have to remember its address. Finally, I unplugged the ZyXEL from the Mac, turned the AirPort back on, plugged the ZyXEL into the industrial computer and was able to SSH into the now connected computer.BTW, do remember to change the password on the box. Even if your network is secured, rogue JavaScript you may happen to encounter could access the box from the inside if you leave the default password in place.OK. Maybe I should have read the manual first. But I do think ZyXEL should change the software to put the operating mode up front. The choice of operating mode should be what you see when you first make contact with the device. Also, the device should try to use DHCP to obtain its initial IP address instead of requiring the user to mess with their LAN config. Then the recommended procedure would be, plug it into your router, log into your router to see what address it got, then go to that address and configure it. It should revert to a fixed IP if and only if DHCP isn't available.

Needed tech help by phone to resolve firmware problem before unit would work in repeater mode. After that it worked well for approx. a month. Then lost communication with te unit. Tried resetting the unit with ethernet cable but was unable to comminicate with the unit. Zyxel.s email help assumes your totally dumb[but maybe have to assume you know zip]. My tech's email address finally died so I have had to revert back to their generic support. Waiting to hear from them but I think the unit has seen it's demise.UPDATE ON PROBLEMTech I was dealing with was no longer employed by Zyxel and no one picked up his email requests. Finally got an RMA from another tech. New router came quickly. It had the new firmware installed that made installation a breeze as long as you change your computer IPv4 address to > 192.168.1.2. Would have given it 5 stars except for the first unit dying.

This is one of the best purchases I have made in electronics. I have rarely been so satisfied with something that I could not think of anything better I could have bought in it's place. This thing does exactly what it says it does and it does it without complaint. It just works. The setup is intelligently organized as to make it easy to use but you still need to research what the terms mean in order to understand what all the options are for. At the moment I have this box connected to my Bravia 3d TV for internet access. I am able to stream all my movies, music, pictures etc. through my home network to my tv at HD quality with no hiccups. Netflix and other apps on the TV work flawlessly as well as far as my end is concerned. I am now a ZyXEL fan.

This does exactly what I needed it to do. The signal quality is good and it offers the security settings I wanted (WPA2+AES, nothing special). I am not sure why people have trouble with setting this up. I am a network admin but I didn't need to use any advanced skills to set the AP up. If you have Windows 7, Windows will help you setup the AP (this may be a feature of Vista and XP, I am not sure).1. Do not plug anything into the AP except the power cord.2. On your laptop, connect to your AP.3. Windows 7 will prompt you to setup your network. Follow the prompts to setup security, IP (static or DHCP), etc.4. Plug the AP into your network5. If you set the IP on the AP to static, navigate to the device in a web browser. If the IP is set via DHCP, you will need to connect to your router or DHCP server to lookup what IP it has been assigned.6. The AP's startup page will try to force you through the first time setup. Since you've already setup the AP through Windows, you can exit this and log in again. At the very least you will need to set a new password.

This may be a great product I wouldn't because I was unable to connect to the specified URL to complete the setup. I am using several of these units on my own equipment and for various setups belonging to my friends and family. This is a stable and very versatile device - it can be used as a NAT router, in standard AP mode, and in client/bridge mode. (I think it may have a repeater mode too, but I don't remember for sure and have never tried using it.) It also has slider type holes in the bottom in case you want to mount it to a wall, ceiling, or cabinet.

Others have covered the difficulty setting up, so I won't harp on that. Once it is set up (in client mode), it was a fast and reliable connection - when it was working. Every so often (twice now in the last 3 months of owning it), it just hangs up and stops working completely. I can't connect to it. I can't reconfigure it. It just becomes inaccessible. If I reset the device, I can reconfigure it easily using the instructions in other posts. Then, it works great for another few months. Not that great from my standpoint. If I had to purchase another WAP, I would not purchase this one. The WAP is in a hard to access place (which is why I need one in the first place) and having to go reset it every few months just won't work. If it hangs up again, I will be retiring it and buying a different WAP. The only thing that prevents me from giving this one star is that when it is working, it works well (very much an all or nothing situation). I'm hoping the hangs were anomalies, but my expectations aren't that high anymore.

I had no problems with the configuration and was able to connect all my devices. However, this rounter in NOT very powerful. In fact, it is no more powerful then the underpowered U-Verse router that I was trying to upgrade. If you have more than a 3000 sqft area to cover, then I recommend passing on the ZyXel WAP3205. I am returning this and instead buying the Amped SR10000. Hopefully this will be worth the price difference.

I have no idea how the various people who've reviewed the WAP3205 in positive terms even got it to work. It is a combination product that can be configured as a bridge, a wireless access point, or both at the same time. If it worked it would be the ideal product and it has an excellent price. However, it simply doesn't work. I set it up as both a bridge and an access point. It repeatedly dropped the WEP connection to my router. I reconfigured my entire wireless network to WPA thinking that it was poor WEP support after a call to ZyXel technical support. It was my theory, but they confirmed it. It didn't help.I went out and got a bridge and decided to use it as an access point. I plugged it into the bridge and configured it to WAP mode. In this mode, it should forward any packets it receives to all devices connected to it. It doesn't. It has a preference for packets that come down from the router. I routinely had trouble getting packets addressed to two devices directly connected to the WAP3205 to forward properly. It also displayed connectivity issues with both my Mac and my Windows 7 laptop. It never actually caused them to disconnect, but I would lose network functionality. The only way to fix this was to reboot.I finally replaced it with a Hawking WAP. Interestingly, I used the ZyXel temporarily to connect to and configure the Hawking. To provide an anecdotal example of the quality of the firmware design, when you log into the web configurator for the WAP3205 it comes up with a Network diagram. Much of the time this network diagram is simply wrong. According to ZyXel tech support, it apparently relies on ping and if your device blocks ping then it won't work. I usually block ping on all of my devices so it should never work. Yet, a fair amount of time, it does work. I suspect tech support is wrong on what it uses, but the code is buggy. When it does work, it shows whether it is connected to the router and also shows the devices connected to it. In access point mode, I temporarily connected it to a hub that is connected to the wireless bridge. In other words, they both connect to the Wireless Router upstream through the same wireless bridge. The WAP3205 doesn't have the Hawking plugged into it. Yet, the diagram clearly shows the Hawking connected under the WAP3205, which is incorrect. This has little effect upon the functionality of the WAP3205, but it is illustrative of the level of planning that went into the design of this firmware. It is in desperate need of revision and based upon its level of quality, I suspect it will take several revisions to even get it close. The last few revisions have only been focused on supporting international languages, which is clearly needed to sell it internationally, but shouldn't they make the basic functionality work without network functionality and packet routing issues first? It's a great idea being able to have a wireless bridge and a wireless access point in the same device, but this suffers from very poor implementation. Too bad. The Hawking I replaced it with can be either a wireless bridge or a wireless access point, but not both at the same time. Therefore, you'd need two of the Hawkings plugged together with an Ethernet port to do what the WAP3205 purports to do by itself, but unfortunately, the ZyXel can't actually perform flawlessly as a wireless bridge or a wireless access point let alone both at the same time.Dale EngleTampa, FL

I've purchased 3 of these units and have had to replace all of them within 2 years. They seem to suffer from quality issues. I've had one die completely and the other two dropped wireless connectivity when acting as a wireless bridge on a regular basis. The one that died was in my home doing light duty and properly surge protected. The other two were in my business and resulted in a loss of productivity due to the constant interruptions to network connectivity. I've switched to the Apple Airport Express and have had no problems so far. My advice would be to stay away from this product.

I even found this YouTube video that walks you through the set-up step by step. I even left the signal open so the other hotel guests can piggyback off the signal. (You're welcome).[...]

I bought this along with a "D-Link DAP-2553" AP and an "Amped Wireless SR300" repeater. I was refreshing the wireless hardware in my home which has been in service for several years. The D-Link DAP-2553 had terrible stability problems and cost 2x what the ZyXEL WAP3205 cost. I would have paid this premium had the D-Link device had more features or was truly "business class" quality (which it claims it is). In reality it provided neither. The ZyXEL WAP3205 had essentially the same features and thusfar hasn't had any stability problems. So the D-Link DAP-2553 is going back.I got the "Amped Wireless SR300" repeater because there are places in my house that have had weak signal. I thought using a repeater would resolve this issue. It turns out the ZyXEL WAP3205 provided more than enough signal to cover my 2-story 3000 sqft home and the repeater was not needed. However, after I got the ZyXEL WAP3205 it was clear that it can also serve as a repeter and it also cost almost 1/2 as much as the Amped Wireless device. I would have gotten more value had I just purchased another ZyXEL WAP3205 and used it in universal repeater mode... 1/2 as much and it can also serve as a wireless client or in AP mode in addition to being used as a repeater. I did test the ZyXEL WAP3205 in universal repeater mode and it behaved as one would expect in terms of signal strength and performance (which is what it is for any repeater). Bottom line is had I needed a repeater I would have been better just buying two ZyXEL WAP3205s. So the Amped Wireless SR300 is also going back.Overall the unit has provided excellent service to my home and it's nice having a single device that just works. Simple is better and I am glad to not have to mess with a wireless repeater.Nice job ZyXEL.

For example on this product you browse to 192.168.1.1, set the mode, security code, ip address and your done. I unboxed it and was using it 15 minutes later. Comes with plenty of documentation if needed. Low cost brand, excellant product.

I live in a house with very thick walls. I was not able to get my wireless signal in the living room even though it was next to the room that had the wireless router. On a friends recommendation I bought this one. I tried to use the universal repeater function at first. This did not work very well. I would get the signal but it was very weak. So I bought some power line adapters to go along with this repeater. This allowed me to give the repeater a good quality connection. then i changed the setting from repeater to access point. Now it is working great and I have a strong signal in most of my rooms. The reason I gave it 4 stars not 5: This device was not easy to setup. It did not have any 1-2-3 quick setup. You will need a tech geek to help you out. Not just that family friend that says he/she knows computers. However, the best part is my wife is happy.
