My DV7 from HP had heat problems as I live in a box so eventually the hard drive gave out and stopped working. I ordered this item from amazon and it came super fast! (prime shipping haha). The installation was a piece of cake, all you have to do is unscrew the bottom, remove the wire from the old hard drive, insert the wire into the new HD and then replace the whole thing into the square hole. Then turn on your computer, boot it to windows 7 and you're done! :D BTW my computer is a lot quieter and cooler now, the hard drive sound doesn't fight with the fan sound, just saying :P

It's your everyday replacement laptop/ps3 hard drive. Arrived well packed, and faster than anticipated with free shipping. I paired it with 2.5" USB 2.0 SATA Hard Drive HDD Case Enclosure - Black in my purchase. My old hdd that was in my ps3 went into the enclosure in the end. You will need a third party fat32 formating program if you are using XP or above.My upgrade went like this:*Installed new 500gb drive into enclosure*Connected the enclosure to my pc and formatted it with [...]*Google for ridgecrop gui fat32 if the link doesn't show up*Connected enclosure to ps3 and backed up uusing the backup utility.*Synced my trophies as they are not part of the backup*Connected the enclosure to my PC and copied the unprotected data to my PC*Opened up the ps3 and exchanged the hard drives*Formatted and ran disk check on my old ps3 hdd. A couple of sectors were marked bad and unusable.*Copied the ps3 backup data back to the old hard drive in the enclosure.*Copied the latest ps3 system update to the hdd in the enclosure*Connected the enclosure to the ps3 and installed the update so the ps3 recognized the new hdd*Backed up the new 500gb hdd.*DoneI picked the 5200rpm drive and that enclosure because they would not need to take up both usb ports. Overall an easy product installation

I wasn't sure at first how difficult the changeover was going to be, but it only took about 10 minutes for the mechanical changeover. The programming, using ACRONIS to clone the original hard drive, took about an hour total (cloning before the changeover to a portable hard drive, then installing to the new HD in my laptop).I was running into space problems when downloading large files, but no longer--this new drive is terrific!

I bought this drive to replace the 60 GB hard drive in my Playstation 3 and it's working just great. The installation was easy, data transfer was painless and it's humming right along, serving up games and videos without a glitch.

I had reviewed this drive in a technical publication prior to ordering it. After installing in my laptop it is hands down the best choice for a replacement in my HP G60. Quiet and fast and it does not get hot. I am abler to leave the laptop on at the ready for days and it performs great. Good Buy and good product.

Overall i am pleased with this haddrive great price and easy to install on Ps3. I was expecting better speed with this drive with the 16mb bufferbut have not noticed any improvement.Since the drive is a western digital product and capacity is great and the price was excellent.i gave 5 stars on everything except speed i only gave a 4.

I bought this HD to use as an external storage device to transport my media files for playback on various devices. This is my first purchase of a 2.5" drive. As soon as it arrived, I unwrapped the HD and inserted it into a Vantec NexStar TX 2.5-Inch SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure and plugged it into my computer. Initially, my computer recognized the HD as a "USB Device" but not a storage device and so I couldn't figure out how to access the HD in order to format it so my computer would recognize it as a storage device. So, I did a quick search on Download'.'com and found some freeware that would do the trick. Once I formatted it with the downloaded software, my computer immediately recognized it.For less than 55 bucks, this drive is a steal. Works perfectly for my needs. If I encounter any problems with this drive, I'll be sure to update this review, but I doubt that'll be the case.

I had this disk (got it via OEM installed dell laptop) and it was working great for a year, after that i see this message at startup indicating that disk failure is imminent, please backup and replace the disk. Now thats bad isnt it ... its sad to see such failure being reported only after a year of use. I dont even get to use the 3 year warranty (which comes with disks if i buy them), i get only the OEM warranty of 1 year !!! So i have to buy a new disk .. but certainly this time i wont go for WD, though WD has bought hitachi now, frankly we just have two options ... WD and Segate and maybe Fujitsu (great disk, have been using a laptop with fujjitsu for 4 years without an issue).

Not much to say, 3 y/o laptop HD started to act flaky, didn't pass the laptop hardware diagnostics, pulled it, installed this replacement unit, reinstalled the OS, working fine, PNP. Hopefully it'll last longer than the OEM HD!Was offered at a good price, quick shipping,etc.!TopCat

I bought this drive to upgrade my 40 gig ps3 hard drive. The shipping was fast and after a month we have no issues with this drive. I walked my 16 year old son throught the upgrade so working with this drive is not difficult. Excellent upgrade for the price.

I bought this drive for my Toshiba Satellite L505 series laptop after filling up the 320 GB one that came with it. I also got a 4gb stick of RAM. All of this was under $100 and I gave myself a full day to install both pieces. It took me under an hour to put them into my laptop and it took me almost the rest of the time to install windows 7. I only had to remove a handful of screws and plugging in the new components and I was done. It is quiet, doesn't get hot at all, and runs smoothly with no problems. I would recommend this hard drive to everyone. (It came in 2 days with super saver shipping)PS. If your old hard drive is still working fine I would recommend putting it into an external enclosure like this one... I ordered this hard drive in 2009, and just installed it in my Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop. I used it as a external drive for music and photos for over 1 year. Well I got a nasty virus on my 80 gig oem hd. So it was time to just do it! This HD is fast, quiet, and I mean quiet, and formatted quickly with XP pro. I have had it in for 2 weeks now and no problems at all. I now have the available space that I always needed. No more jump drives or sd cards. Again I can't say enough how quiet and fast it is. Have to say that I haven't noticed any heat like the old 80 gig. Seems to run cool or cooler. Though, I don't have the means to check the temp other than by touch. I am very happy I got this one after researching the many choices here. It was a bit more than my first choice. I recommend spending the few more dollars to get this primo HD.

I bought this drive as a birthday present for my son as the original drive that came with the notebook crashed and burned in less than 6 months. The drive is now in a Pavillion dv7 series HP notebook. I watched the video from Western Digital on how to change the drives out. It took me about 15 minutes to switch the drives - I was having trouble with the screws on the notebook, nothing to do with the drive itself. It was very easy to install and I'm no computer repair expert. I am impressed with this drive as it runs quietly, just as advertised, and is much faster than the original HP drive. I have used Western Digital drives for years in my desktop computers. I had to use the warranty on one drive a while back and WD replaced the drive, no questions asked. If you're looking for a quality drive that is moderately priced with a great warranty, this is the drive for you. I plan to put another WD 500GB drive in the secondary bay soon. I believe you will be just as impressed as I am with this drive for it's smooth, quiet running and ease of installation and set up. It works right out of the box. WD ROCKS!!!!!

I purchased this hard drive to replace a faulty one in a netbook. Installation was easy, even though the hard drives were from different manufacturers. The 2.5" size makes it ideal for both small computer applications and as a portable hard drive. The SATA2 interface on the back allows for easy hook up to most places. Overall, this is a good product to get if you need to replace an existing hard drive, or add one to an ongoing build.

My MacBook went dead on me the other day, it just stopped working. Went to the service center at a Mac store and the diagnostic was HDD failure. No surprise here, I knew it would happen sooner or later, but then they told me the price for the new HDD at the Mac Shop, about US$140 for a 120GB HDD. Outrageous. So I got this HDD, almost 3 times the capacity at 1/3 the price!!! Installation is fairly easy, nevertheless, since I was already paying for the diagnostic, I got the guys at the Mac Shop to install it for me. Plugged the Time Machine external HDD and in about 1 hr had my MacBook the way it was just 1 hr before the crash. I'm a happy customer, my Mac works great with lots of additional space :)Try that with Windows.

This review is primarily directed towards Macbook Pro owners.Pro: cheap, large capacityCons: constant beach ball slow downs, high load cycles, KNOWN WD/Mac compatibility issuesDetails:The WD drive has a KNOWN compatibility issue with Apple's Macbook Pro line. The drive constantly attempts to park the needle and the Macbook will IMMEDIATELY start the drive back up. This is irrespective of the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" setting. This constant back and forth causes the drive to cycle up and down in a way that will impact performance in the immediate term, and shorten the life of the drive in the long term. Unfortunately many people don't take a noticeable performance hit, so they don't notice the constant cycling of the drive until it starts to click after a few months.Even after a CLEAN install of Snow Leopard, I immediately took a performance hit with the drive hitting the spinning beach ball every couple of minutes and then hanging on it for about 3 to 5 seconds. A little bit of research and the problem seems like it's fairly common. This affected not only heavy load programs like Final Cut Pro, but also affected simple web browsing and word processing tasks. My experience is not unique.After 3 days of issues with the WD Scorpio, I RMA'd it and purchased this Hitachi 500GB Travelstar SATA 7200 RPM Laptop Internal Hard Drive instead (on a users recommendation on another support forum):http://www.amazon.com/Hitachi-Travelstar-Internal-HD20500IDK-7K/dp/B002FYJQB8/So far I have not had any issues with the drive and everything is running smoothly.Before you buy this drive, google "Western Digital Scoripio Blue Beach Ball Macbook Pro". Great product. Price was a little high at the time of purchase I think I paid $100 back in 2009. Now it's going for $54. What can I say but more storage for your PS3. I'm using this hard drive in my PS3 slim. I've read on forums to use a program called 'wdidle' to disable the parking feature, which normally would cause lag on some PS3 games if it was waiting for the hard drive to spin up and load data. I used that program and so far my PS3 hasn't run into any issues. From the games I tried, I haven't seen any issues with this. Otherwise, no noticeable speed improvement, but at least I don't have to worry about hard drive space for a long time.

This is my second Western Digital hard drive. First one lasted over a year. This one is dying within two months. It is getting too noisy which is generally the sign of dying hard drive.

I mounted this hard drive for my Patriot PBO media player.Very quiet and fast enough to do all play, fastforward, skip, etc.Gets hot pretty quick, but maybe due to my media player doesn't have fan.Small drive but has plenty of space!

Man when i first bought it i thought it would be a pain to use but it was easy and works great! It is compatible with PS3 like noted above i didn't have to do anything to it just removed the old one and popped this new one in and my PS3 set it up and i have been using it ever since!I love the extra space i don't miss my old crappy 40G haha i will recommended this product to my friends in the future thanks!

I've had this drive in my mid-2009 MacBook Pro for about a month now. It operates as quietly as my previous drive. I was going to go for a 7200RPM model but was worried about vibrations. I've gone with 7200RPM models in other MacBooks simply to have the drive fail in 6mo to 1 year. Hopefully this one will stand the test of time.

The installation only takes 5 minutes just pop the plastic holding the hard drive unscrew blue screw and slide hard drive cage out. Than remove 4 screws,now take new drive swap and put everything back and load ps3 it will ask to format and boom new fresh 500gb Hard drive.Pros:-500gb whole lot of space for videos and Games-Low Price(same as a brand new game)-Good replacement warrantyCons:-PS3's screws are really easy to strip BE CAREFUL-Backing up your old hard drive Takes a LONG time but worth500 gb is enough space for all my videos and games add-ons. This is a good investment, you will be amazed how you could live with 60gb (in my case) and if you do back ups think of how many games you can backup on this. You will not regret this.

I purchased this drive as a replacement for the original drive in a circa 2008 MacBook Pro. The new drive installed perfectly in the space occupied by the old drive and it's working great. I've recently replaced the hard drives in two laptops with WD drives and I have been pleased with both.

Everything seemed fine when I installed this hard drive which was easy to do. After just one year it failed on me. IT guy at work assured me it was just a fluke so I bought it again, and one year later, it goes out just like that. This product is unreliable.

This drive replaced one of the two very full Seagate Momentus 80GB 2.5" SATA drives in my HP Pavilion dv8000 series laptop. Very simple plug and play procedure. All I had to do was partition and format the drive and I was up and running. This drive is occasionally a LITTLE noisier than the factory installed Seagate but not loud enough to bother me or the person next to me. As a 30-year computer tech, I highly recommend this drive. This is a SATA II drive but works perfectly in my SATA I laptop. I'll be purchasing another one to replace the other drive in this computer. Then I'll have a 1TB laptop. Cool!

I needed a bigger drive than the stock 80GB in my Mac Mini and this one (500GB Scorpio Blue) fit the bill. I was hesitant at first due to all the negative reviews about reliability and noise but for the price, I was willing to take a chance. Ever since the install, I have not heard any clicking noises from the drive and it's about 2 feet from me. I hear alot more drive park clicking from my Lenovo laptop, which is normal according to the WD tech I called about this issue. So far so good. I've been keeping a backup of everything and will update my review if anything goes wrong. So at the moment, I highly recommend this drive. The packaging was adequate but interesting b/c there were no seals to break to open the box but luckily for me, the drive was still inside.UPDATE (11/5/11)Now I am hearing the clicking noise. I guess after some use it gets this way. But I have yet to have any data issues (knock on wood). It is still not as loud as the Seagate Momentus in my laptop. Btw, I am surprised that the price of this drive has gone up so much. I bought it for half the price here on Amazon.

First of all, there used to be two product listings for this hard drive, both identical except for the ASIN numbers. One was listed as the stand alone, the other was listed in the Western Digital Scorpio Blue page with the pull-down menu that has all the different sized drives in the series. I have no idea what the difference is. Amazon, for some reason, took down the 500 GB listing from the pull-down menu and it now has it's own page. Odd they chose that direction. It would have made more sense to remove the individual listing.Ok, this is for PS3 owners/upgraders. This drive fits the PS3 wonderfully and runs nice and cool with no issues. For the price you can't go wrong. I have the 40 GB PS3 (Spider Man 3 bundle) and have the data (saves + install) of about 10 games and I was running out of space. I did a lot of research of the various SATA 2.5" laptop hard drives available. I researched all the various brands and compared reviews and prices vs size. I came to the conclusion that a 500 GB drive for $100 is a steal given the extra space gained, so that's the direction I went. Of all the brands, the Western Digital Scorpio Blue series seemed to have the most positive reviews all over with the least amount of reviews stating drive failure, so that's the one I chose.Installing was extremely easy after backing up my data. The longest part of the whole procedure was backing up and restoring the data. I won't go into details, but I do recommend the app another reviewer used to format an external drive larger than 32GB in the FAT32 file system. It's called "fat32format". It works extremely well and extremely fast (less than 4 seconds for a 120GB external drive). Just follow the directions and you're good. I did this because in order for the PS3 to recognize the external drive it has to be formatted in the FAT32 file system. As for the procedure of upgrading the PS3, just google "upgrade PS3 hard drive" and you'll get tons of tutorials and videos.Now here's something important: A lot of people who upgraded their PS3's and saw xxx/465 GB free after upgrading are not realizing that this is not the fault of the PS3. You could put the same drive in a laptop and it will have the same 465GB. This is because manufacturers advertise a gigabyte as something different than what windows or the PS3 recognize. Manufacturers see a gigabyte (GB) as 1000 megabytes, and 1 megabyte (MB) as 1000 kilobytes (KB), when in actuality windows sees 1 MB as 1024 KB. So that's where the unaccounted lost space goes.So as of now, my opinion is that this hard drive is a great choice for PS3 upgrades. If you don't want to drop a bill on the 500GB version they also have the Scorpio Blues in smaller sizes for reduced prices. I like this hard drive so much I may replace my laptop hard drive with one.

I bought this as a replacement for my Macbook's (2008-2009 model) original hard drive since it got corrupted when the laptop fell down at an airport ( Yes, kill me !!!)Considering I got this 500 GB for 40 odd bucks as a replacement for 160GB original Hard drive is a super bargain.Installation is easy and take about 5-10 minutes.I saw many comments complaining about it being too loud but I did not find much difference when i compare it to the original one.The speed is decent as before.I also heard cases of the hard drive going out after few months of usage. In case that happens I will surely let you all know.But for now if it working great with no visible issues. Great deal !!

Replacement drive for a 2010 13" MacBook Pro. Works fine, but isn't nearly as quiet at the stock drive (Seagate 250GB). I work in a very quiet office and the drive makes audible white noise, like a small fan is running. I also tried the 1TB version of this drive which made the same noise only a bit louder. I was hoping this 500GB WD drive would match the acoustic profile of the stock Seagate drive. No such luck. I am keeping it, though, because I am tired of cloning and swapping out hard drives. The noise isn't worth the effort of searching for a quieter drive. It only bothers me in quiet environments. If I have the AC on I can't hear it. I have not been able to install this item. THe PS3 will not recognize the new hard drive.I successfully formated the new hard drive to FAT 32 and partitioned it for 249 GB . I used a usb flash drive make a back up of the old hard drive (PS3 40GB),and had the flash installed when trying the new HD.Sincerely, elcliff@aol.comPS This item is useless to me, I could use some HELP!!!!

A hard drive should last a long, long time.This one didn't.I bought this hard drive at the same time as my 120GB new PS3 Slim. I had put a 300GB HD in my first PS3 and it was brilliant.But this one started giving me system failures and required hard drive database rebuilds and system restores within the first 5 months of relatively low use. I don't know if it's the drive, if I got a lemon, if 500gb hd's don't work well with the PS3, but it simply ended up being a waste of money and time for me.What I do know is my PS3 Slim is working just fine with the original 120GB HD back in it, and I can't really use this 500GB HD anymore at all. It's a $55 paperweight.

I bought the WD Scorpio Blue 500GB 3 days ago to put in to my MacBook Pro 13" (Mid-2009) at Viewnet in Lowyat Plaza for RM269. I also bought a Sensonic SATA casing for RM49 from Allit. I put the new drive in the casing, cloned my existing system over using CarbonCopyCloner. This process took about 2 hours and was problem free. Then I followed instructions posted by OCW on Youtube to remove the stock drive and put in the new drive. The only tools you need are a Philips #00 and a Torx #T6 screwdriver. Don't forget to remove the mounting screws from the stock drive and put them in the new drive! The replacement process was a breeze and went without a hitch.I then fired up my MBP and found that it took longer than usual to startup for the first time (subsequent startups were much quicker). The OS startup time wasn't noticeably faster compared to the stock drive, but application startup times for Firefox and iTunes were faster (2 bounces for Firefox and 5 bounces for iTunes). During shutdown however, I found that I have to manually close all my apps using CMD+Q before shutting down the OS, else the OS will beachball and I will have to force quit from CMD+OPTION+ESC and re-initiate the shutdown. With the stock drive, I did not have this problem -- I could just press CTRL+OPTION+CMD+EJECT with any number of applications open, and the OS will just happily quit all the apps for me and shut the machine down. This is not really a big deal, but the one aspect of this drive that was a let-down was the noise level.The stock drive was a Fujitsu 160GB which was absolutely inaudible under all operating conditions (idle/read/write), even when I put my ear up against the body of the MBP. The Scorpio Blue however, has a constant whooshing sound (could this be the "whisperring" that is referenced to by their marketing WhisperQuiet tag?) when idle that is audible from an arms length, and clicks occasionally when reading/writing. I have a few more days to try it out, and see if I can get used to the whoosh. Otherwise, I'm contemplating taking it back to the store to change it out for a Samsung.My MBP: 13" 2.26GHz (Mid-2009), 4MB RAM, 500GB WD Scorpio Blue, OS X 10.6.2.

I was an initial skeptic but I decided it was worth the upgrade because purchasing more space from Apple would've been triple the price. I took the plunge and have had this in for about 2 weeks with no problems. Installation was easy, but my computer (mid 2009 MacBook Pro), didn't not initially recognize the new drive, so after scouring the Apple website and forums, I found a solution and all has been well since then. Be sure to use to use Time Machine to migrate all your info. I will wait a while until I update this review but if you're a skeptic, take a chance!

Need to increase the hd in my '07 MacBook 15" and this was how. Installed within 20 min, the restored from time machine( this took some time). Could not be happier!

It's very easy to install. Only took me 5 minutes. The 320gb wasn't really 320gb, but I expected that. You will end up in the 260's by the time you install it, and my playstation is actually quiet for once.

I was nearly out of space on my 80gb ps3's hdd so I just decided to get this drive for it. In order for the ps3 to recognize it you must first format to FAT32 either using a laptop or a pc with a 2.5 sata case enclosure and usb cable connected to it. You will also need a program for the formatting since the drive is greater than 32 gb, I recommend using Easeus partition master home edition to do so. Anyway once your ps3 recognizes the drive it'll format on its own. This drive worked very well and was a good price for all the space left on it. I haven't had any lag issues or ps3 slowing down as others have reported and am very pleased with this drive. Highly recommended!

its a good hard disk, i prefer western digital than seagate. I have already replaced about 10 seagete in my home and office, i wont buy seagate ever again.
