PLUSES: It's large, quiet, fast. It easily and perfectly fits where a 20-40-60-80 GB, 2.5" SATA drive would, including in a PS3.MINUSES: You may be able to find larger drives but not everyone may need more.Of course, it's no longer 'the biggest' but I knew that a couple of months ago, when I upgraded my PS3. I also figured that, since I have no plans of storing a movie library, 320 GB would carry me for the next couple of years. After that, it's likely that I'd be buying the next generation game/multimedia machine.Advice to the PS3 upgraders from someone who, after some hesitation, actually did it:- Go for the highest capacity. If it's a 2.5" SATA and you can afford it you should probably go with it. I already replaced my original PS3 drive with a 320GB but my formerly 60GB laptop has a 500GB 2.5" WD SATA now.- If you need to format this drive or any drive to Fat32, the best utility I found was FAT32FORMAT.EXE - Google and you shall find it out there. I'm not reviewing the formatter utility but I can tell you that it does a drive in less than 10 seconds AND it works on Vista.- It helps to have a 60-80 USB-connected drive handy to backup your PS3 content before upgrading. With one of these as the backup device, the PS3 fully restore EVERYTHING, including whatever copywrited or protected objects, such as, in my case the PS2 memory cards emulations._______________________________________Note (March 12, 2009)The Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 2.5 Inch, 8 MB Cache, 5400 RPM SATA II WD5000BEVT seems to be the way to go these days. I like WD and the 500GB is selling now for less than I paid for the 320GB. I actually helped a couple of friends upgrade with this drive and it was quick and easy.Note 2: (April 8, 2009)The review above was for the 320GB, which I used to upgrade my PS3. I just ordered the 500GB because life became almost unbearable with a 60GB on my laptop. I am planning to swap the drives without actually reinstalling the OS and the apps with help from Acronis True Image Home 2009 PC Backup & Recovery.Note 3: (April 12, 2009) - Laptop UpgradeMy 2 year old Thinkpad T60 came with a wimpy 60GB SATA drive. I needed the ability to upgrade to the much larger 500GB and do it without having to reinstall the OS, apply the service packs and then reinstall and configure 100 different little apps.Acronis True Image Home 2009 PC Backup & Recovery allowed me to do all of the above in about one hour. Its Utilities section has a 'clone' option that would copy EVERYTHING, including the Master Boot Record/Sector (MBR) from the puny 60GB drive unto the 500GB while allowing me to control the size of the active partition - this while the 500GB was connected through a USB wire and the laptop booted off the program's CD.Once the operation completed (50 minutes) I simply removed the old 60GB drive off my laptop and replaced it with the 500GB drive. Once the laptop was turned back on it booted up happily, with a 200GB master partition and a 300GB second partition. There are 3 words that I have to use to describe the process: PERFECTION and COMPLETE SATISFACTION. This capability alone is worth the price of this product. To my surprise, with the new drive, the Primary Hard Disk score as computed by Microsoft (right click on 'My computer' then select 'Properties') jumped from a decent 4.8 to an unexpected 5.7.

I was looking to upgrade my hard drive, on my ps3, for awhile...did a lot searching on the internet. All the reviews I read were good so I went for it. The only problem I ran into was getting the drive formatted (fat32). Maybe I'm not that pc savoy but I decided to checkout Best Buy's Geek Squad. They charged me 50 bucks and took care of everything. If you want to or need to get a hard drive, this is the one.

Shopped for HD upgrade and found this drive to be best bang for the buck.Overjoyed to discover it was also the most popular upgrade for my Dell Inspiron 1525.The only way things could have been better would have been a better experience transfering my system to the new drive.I must mention the freeware program that ultimately worked. PartSave.Exe from Partition-Saving.com Considering everthing, it was a good learning experience for an old dog and a GREAT one for the purchase experience.

I had a 160 GB hard drive which wasn't near enough storage for my laptop. I looked on the Dell support website and they suggested this hard drive as an upgrade. Of course, I prefered to buy it on Amazon.I've been using this drive for two months and it is quiet and has worked flawlessy. What a huge difference it has made in the speed of my 3 year old computer. My other drive was almost full and didn't leave much computing room. I feel like I have a brand new computer. Here's how I installed it:1. Buy a drive enclosure. You need this so you can plug the new drive into your USB so that you can clone your current drive onto the new drive. I bought this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AAVA08/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_title2. I bought Acronis True Home Image 2010. You might be able to download the free version off the Western Digital website but for some reason, I couldn't get it to work. In the "Tools & Utilites" section, select "Clone." That will copy the contents of your current drive exactly onto your new drive - hence the "clone" name.3. Install the new drive into your laptop and you're done. Very easy. You can even put your old drive into the enclosure and use it as extra storage.

Excellent value. Easy install (laptop), easy setup. The only weak area that I can identify is that if you need to reset the laptops BIOS password by shorting the jumpers on the mobo, make sure you remove the harddrive first! Otherwise you'll be doing what I did and buy a new harddrive (the HDD password gets set and there is no way to clear it - a security measure to deter theft).

This drive replaced a 120GB drive which had been in my Toshiba notebook from the factory. Physical install was uneventful, created new partition, formatted NTFS, did quick basic install of Win XP from CD, and then recovered everything from a Ghost image which restored my Win 7 and all data files. Could not have been simpler. The drive is extremely quiet and certainly quick enough for anything I might expect of it. I am completely satisfied with this purchase, without exception. I would classify myself an average home user with very modest computer skills.

I bought this as a hard drive upgrade for my brand new MacBook Pro 13 model MC374LL/A (the latest model as of September 2010). Hardware and OSX installation was successful but after I started using it I noticed that the OS would stall intermittently for no apparent reason. Every few minutes the OSX rainbow spinning wheel would come up for a couple of seconds and then go away. It felt like the OS had the hiccups. I switched the hard drive back to the one that came with the laptop and haven't experienced the problem since then. After some research I learned that non-Apple endorsed hard drives might present this exact problem mostly due to firmware incompatibility. Unfortunately I had to return this product as it was clearly not compatible with my MacBook Pro.

I ended up buying 2 of these in less than one week, had 2 laptop hard drives die on me. These are the perfect replacements. The cheapest you'll find around for 500GB, especially in a 2.5" drive. They are a breeze to install and run quiet. I use one in a Media PC that streams SD Movies/TV Shows to an Xbox 360, its been used hard in the past 5 days and not an issue. This deal can't be beat right now.

I've been using my Western Digital 500gb Scorpio Blue HDD in my PS3 for a bit over a month and so far it is working great. I've always had good fortune with Western Digital drives and this little drive appears to be as reliable as my past WD drives.A few notes on upgrading your PS3 HDD:1. Be sure to back up your existing data to an external HDD or at least your save files to a USB jump drive prior to swapping HDD's. According to Sony's "ToS" agreements with PSN content you're allowed a total of 5 separate downloads of your purchased content from the PSN. So if you don't have an external HDD you can simply re-download your content from the PSN store as long as you haven't exceeded the limit. A word of caution though: your save files may be locked (depending on the game) and some may not be able to be copied to a jump drive. Using the PS3's "Back-up Utility" in the XMB to save to an external HDD will copy even protected save files. It's clearly the better option. Also, once your original PS3 HDD comes out of the PS3 that's pretty much it. If you attempt to place it back in your PS3 it will still need to be formated, thus losing all of your data.2. Backing up your data to an external HDD can take several hours, obviously depending on the amount of data on your PS3's HDD. I had just about filled my 80gb PS3 HDD when I backed up my data. All told the process took about 1.5 hours. Once you've swapped the PS3's HDD for the larger model, restoring the data from the external HDD will take the same amount of time.3. Even though this WD Scorpio is rated at 500gb that will not be the actual writable disk size. Drives always set aside a certain amount of space... for what I'm not entirely sure. I'm certain part of it has to do with the PS3's OS but the rest I don't know. All told I had 465gb/500gb after I swapped out the drive. Still a massive amount of storage capacity.4. The PS3 uses 3 screws (at least my 80gb does) to hold the HDD in place. Be sure to have a small Philip's screwdriver - a jewelers screwdriver works best - to remove the screws. Be careful during this process as the wrong size screwdriver can easily strip the screws. An additional 4 screws hold the PS3's HDD to the enclosure. With the right size screw driver the process will take 5 minutes. That's pretty much it. Swapping the PS3 HDD is as simple as it gets and for most users 500gb's is more than you'll ever need. I've got around 10 PSN games, several demos of games, a complete back-up of my music library and have yet to get under 400gb's. My next step will be to use my PS3 as a media center and stream my movies from my PC.

Ran out of room on my 40 Gig PS3 and have been looking at this for awhile. Finally pulled the trigger on the 500 Gig. If you have an external USB harddrive bigger than what you have on your current PS3 drive, it is very easy to transfer data to it and then back to new hard drive. Sony makes the process simple.Works great, quieter, and love having the space to do whatever I want and not have to think about how much space I have left. Make sure you have the latest PS3 firmware first. Have not noticed any slowdown whatsoever. If anything it seems to be a little smoother with the extra space.

PS3 USERS: This piece of hardware is great. Really easy to install and so long as you have something to copy a backed up copy of your old harddrive, the installation takes only a few hours total. It literally takes about 10 minutes to physically change the HDD's over, but copying the old data takes a while. The more data you have, the longer it'll take. Make sure though you also have the most recent copy of the PS3 Updates on your backup drive as well, because that is needed also. You can download a copy of it from PlayStation's website over your computer. Just make sure you place it in a folder marked "UPDATE" inside the "PS3" folder of your backed up data on the external hard drive, or whatever storage device you used. The space you get from this is great, this is easy to use, and so far, no problems whatsoever. Of all the upgraded hard drives out there, this one is the most reliable.
