I bought this hard drive to upgrade my ps3 and had nothing but trouble. The first one didn't work at all. I tried to power up my ps3 with it inside, and my ps3 kept freezing. So I sent it back and received a replacement rather quickly. The second one worked for a while, in fact two days longer then the return policy so I was out of luck. It was so frustrating, I lost my money and game saves because this bloody thing kept dying. Save yourselves some pain and money and find another hard drive.

Was tired of dealing with only 60 GB with my PS3 hard drive. Was told by a friend that this Scorpio Blue 500 GB works really well, is faster and quieter. So far so good on how it's working out. Will never have to worry about lack of space ever again. Now I'll be able to do the full install of Gran Turismo 5 when it comes out.

I bought this because of the price compared to Hitachi drives which I have been told are the most reliable and best quality. I used it to replace the Hitachi that was in my macbook pro(unibody) it seems to drain the battery a little faster and is slightly louder than the old drive. It fit properly and works, just makes a very quiet humming noise sometimes that the other drive did not. I will update if I have any problems.Update: I took this out of my mac I really did not like how it worked and that little humming got annoying, I am using it as an external drive now.

Following some instructions I found online on replacing my PS3's internal hard drive, I was quickly and easily able to get my data transferred off the old hard drive onto a temporary external. Then I took out the old hard drive, put this one in, and transferred the data from the external onto this new one. It's working perfectly, and I have a TON more space available now!

very good drive for the price. Replaced my failed PS3 drive with it, no longer restricted to the 20 gig it came with.Shame I lost all of my data on the PS3 but oh well. Setup was a snap, had the ps3 back up and running in minutes. For anyone looking to upgrade their ps3 to a much larger drive, this one is very good value for money.

Pros - Fast. I'm getting sustained 70+ MB/s writes on large file transfers off a 3Ware RAID controller, and 60+ MB/s off the ICH10R chipsets on my MB's with these drives set as SATA/Ehanced IDE. I'm replacing all my 3.5" space heaters with these drives for backups and such. Velociraptors aside, if you put this drive on a good RAID controller or a good MB chipset I don't think you will lose anything but noise and heat for day to day use. I'm guessing 2 of these in RAID 0 off a decent controller could threaten quite a few SSD's out there.Cons - As backup and file storage drives, I have no complaints. You will of course need to add an adapter or drive tray system if you are going to use it in a desktop. I can't speak to these as boot drives.Other thoughts - These drives use a couple of watts; even the greenest 3.5" drive is going to use 3 times that, and most 3.5" drives are going to use 4-6 times that much electricity. This drive proves the days of a laptop drive doing 20 MB/s are gone. It would be interesting to see how well this drive did if the RPM's went up to 7200, but there's really no need for that at these price/performance levels.

Bought this 500GB drive to upgrade my PS3 slim 120GB. Installation was easy and only took about 5 minutes, and the PS3 had no problem reformatting the drive.I used the "data transfer" method to move data from my older PS3-fat to this new drive and it went well without any issues.The drive seems pretty fast and doesn't make any noise, so I'd definitely buy this drive again for other uses. For $55, it's a great value.

So far so good with this drive. Only problem I've come across is an incessant clicking, about once every 5 seconds, which seems to be the drive head parking. This happens under windows7 and linux ( this laptop is set up to dual boot ). Can be irritating in a quiet room.

Purchased to be used in an older laptop computer that required an IDE rather than a SATA drive. I ordered a $6.00 aluminum drive case and turned it into a very quick and large portable USB powered back-up drive. Works perfect - currently loaded with 350+ GB of software and data. Total cost for the package was less than $60.00!

I purchased this drive as a replacement for a Macbook that had previously had a SATA I drive from toshiba. I was a little apprehensive given previous reviews that have reported problems with SATA II drives. The installation took about 10 minutes and functioned immediately. Given the excellent value of this drive, I can't believe I waited this long!

This hard drive was a purchase I made because I was in a hurry to repair my friend's notebook computer. I live overseas and I am very limited on buying products to mostly online. I must say that Amazon.com made my experience of purchasing this hard drive easy and quick. Not only did it arrive as promised (in only 3 days), but it was professionally packaged and secure from any rattling and such. In addition to the aforementioned, I had no problems installing it and loading the operating system. Looked at the reviews and many are good but I saw a lot of stuff saying that they break all the time. I just installed it and so far so good. I hope that it can last me at least a couple of years. Fit perfectly in my Sony Vaio F series. Get EZ Upgrade Universal to transfer your data. I will update this review if something comes up.

I bought this hard-drive to replace the old one in my PS3. It was super easy to install and has all the memory I could ever need. The only drawback has been that it seems to take awhile to download games, but once they are loaded they play great. For what you get, though, this hard-drive cannot be beat.

Easiest install ever for a ps3 i think even people who have trouble with electronics will find it really easy. All you do is look up a guide do what is says then back up then your done and have a large hard drive to store all your down loadable games and you movies along with any music you have to put on there. So far its been super quiet. The HD that came with the system use to tick tick tick all the time now there's no tick its great.

I only have for couple of weeks, but I'm pretty happy about it, I had my HD full, and now I have my MacBook with a lot of space availae again!! I raccomende this product if you have a MacBook HD full and you want replace the internal HD with one bigger.

I upgraded my ps3 hdd with this one. Ps3 stock hdd is toshiba 80gig. I never read the manual for ps3 so this hard drive actually made me realize all these awesome features of PS3 (like using it for photo slideshow, watch divx, etc) since I now have more hdd space. I picked this hdd because I was told that 7000 rpm hdd would generate more heat so I went for the best rated 5400RPM hdd under 100 dollars.The installation was cake but you need external drive to back up your ps3 data so that you can transfer your save game etc. after installation of the hardware.as for the drive, it's quieter than ths stock ps3 hdd, data transfer speed is not noticeble but it is generating less heat for sure. the stock hdd made some clicking noises here and there and this one is absolutely quiet. maybe a few clicks here and there... Overall an excellent hdd.---ps3 hdd upgraders: I used 1x 16gig usb flash to back up my data, then also used another 2gig usb flash drive to download the system file from sony for re-setup of ps3 OS. This was an unexpected hassle. the upgrade and reinstallation is pretty much automatically done but you still have to wait for a while. the whole process took me almost 2 hours. I have not bought any online games off ps3 store but I was told that if you bought anything you can re-download them for free (maybe up to 5 times?). If you have questions on upgrading hdd, just leave a post, and I'll reply.

I got this drive to replace the 320Gb drive in my laptop that went belly up and did a clean install of Windows 7 on it and it runs great! Very quiet, very fast startup. No lagging or problems so far. I would reccoment this!

I bought this to replace the miniscule 40 GB drive in my PS3, which I filled to capacity by merely playing PS3 games that required up to 6 GB of space to install. Why PS3 games require such a ridiculous amount of space is certainly a topic worthy of discussion, however, this is not the forum. Installing this hard drive was a breeze. For those who need help, a little instruction:1. Use the PS3's backup feature to backup all your existing hard drive's information. Use a USB flash drive, external hard drive, or iPod (I used my 120 GB classic).2. Unplug your PS3, then pop the hard drive cover off the PS3 using a small flat head screwdriver.3. Unscrew the screws keeping your hard drive in place. This will take a small Philips screwdriver, the kind used for computers and the like. Don't use a big one unless you enjoy stripping screws and cursing a lot.4. Pull the old hard drive out. Unscrew the other screws keeping it in place in its hard drive cage.5. Pop the hard drive out of its cage. Put the new hard drive in the cage. Screw it in.6. Put the cage back in place and screw it in.7. Put the cover back on.8. Plug your PS3 back in and turn it on. It will ask you to format. Go ahead, can't do any harm.9. Use the PS3's internal restore feature to restore all the information you previously backed up.10. SYNC YOUR TROPHY INFORMATION if you're interested in such things. I almost had a heart attack when I thought I'd lost all my trophies. Syncing with the server will put them all back in place.11. Enjoy your massive new hard drive.12. Think about how you might have compressed this list to maybe 4 or 5 steps instead of 12.13. Or 13 for that matter.This hard drive is currently serving its purpose quite well. It's also noticeably quieter than the factory 40 GB, a big plus.

I purchased this WD Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB 2.5", 8MB Cache, 5400 rpm SATA HDD to replace the original Hitachi 120GB Hard Drive in my one month old Slim PlayStation 3. After the installation, I noticed that it is not really 500GB but 465GB. After restoring the 12.9GB PlayStation 3 back-up, I only have 400GB Free Space left. I can't understand why that much space lost.The good part is that installation was easy and it is quiet. I just hope Western Digital will explain in their description the lost amount of space.

I bought this to stick in my new MacBook Pro. I have had every brand of drive and every drive fails at some point. Since switching to WD drives about 2 years ago I have not seen a failure. I'm sure that they will all die at some point which is why I have 3 copies of my data at all times. This drive runs cool and relatively quiet. It is not as silent as the Toshiba OEM drive that came in the MBP but it is barely noticeable and stock drives in Mac portables are notoriously unreliable. Since the 500 GB upgrade from Apple would have been $150 I don't have any problem doing my own upgrade and even throwing away the stock drive.+++++++ 2/28/10 UPDATE: After about 2 months the drive developed a high-pitched whine and started having directory corruption issues which could not be repaired using Disk Warrior. I guess I shouldn't have written the review as it seems to have jinxed my record with WD. It appears their RMA process is simple but I don't agree with having to pay the shipping to them for a drive that died just outside the Amazon return window.

I have owned an 80 GB PS3 for over four years and my hard drive was at capacity. This was a very cost effective and easily installed hard drive that I am very happy with. Not much else to say!

Bought strictly for my ps3 and works amazingly easy and well. ps anyone doing a data transfer for your console i recomend a good pen drive at least 2 gb, an lan cable, and an external enclosure for your hard drive no longer in use. i like vantec products for enclosures inexpensive but never fail. forgive my spelling.

Works well as a replacement for my 106 GB initial disk under Win 7.Recommend you do a partition, low level format and scan on the drive prior to using.This corrects a miriad of problems from the start. The sequence sets the drive to your controller.

Did the research and found this product came up high in the rankings. Was a little worried that the noise would be at bit much, but went with it anyway. It took only a couple of days to arrive in Norway (from US). This was the most efficient delivery of any on-line purchase that I've made.Installation was easy (with the help of more internet research). It literally took 15 minutes to install after doing the back ups / disk copies etc. I didn't have the right tools to unscrew some of the screws, but luckily was able to improvise. Reloaded software after completing the install of the hard drive, and apart from having more disk space, I wouldn't have known anything else has changed. As for the noise, well yes there is a slightly louder hum, but with all the activity and noise in my place, I hardly notice it.So far so good!

I bought this drive to put into my PS3 Slim 120GB system. The drive has worked well for over 2 months with no annoying noises or anything. It was easy to install and easy to set back up. After formatting I believe the 500GB capacity went down to ~465GB, then it dropped down to 400GB after I installed the PS3 OS and a few GBs of downloaded material. I'm pleased with the drive, but disappointed with how quickly the drive lost capacity. It's still way more storage space than I'll ever need and hasn't caused any change in performance of my PS3.

Love it easy to install i had no problem but a friend of my had with his 40gb ps3 because of the 3.41 firmware but don't worry all you have to do is download to a flash drive the new 3.41 firmware and install it and your good to go.Need more info about the 3.41 firmware Google it you will find a lot of info that help my friend upgrade his ps3.

I bought this hard drive a few months ago due to the lack of space of my PS3 80 GB hard drive. I made a back up of the data from the PS3 hard drive, and then I removed the old one and installed the new one (500 GB nice!) and it was immediately detected and formatted in a few instants. I transferred all of the PS3 data, everything ran fine and right now I have used like 150 GB and I still have plenty space left for use for demos, videos, music, saves, download content, etc.About this drive I must say:Pros:It's a Western Digital.Compatible with PS3 recommended specs (for instance: 5400 RPM, 2.5-inch hard drive).Size 500 GB.Cons:The package does not seem to be very secure with those air bags included, not sure if those air bags will fully protect an OEM hard drive.Despite of that minor inconvenient, Western Digital hard disks ROCKS!!.100% recommended.5 stars.

I decided to upgrade my MacBook Pro laptop. Why Apple sold such as expensive computer with only a 90 GB hard disk drive is beyond me, but they did. I was a bit worried about my ability to install a replacement OEM drive and whether it would be compatible with a system that used a relatively slow clock speed and a 7200 RPM Hitachi drive initially. But I followed the recommended steps. First, I backed up my computer with an external drive using the Time Machine SW. Then I replaced the drive following one of the YouTube Video explanations (make sure you have the right tiny screwdrives and a T6 driver). The only wrinkle in doing that was getting the tape holding the connectors in place to stick again. The tape can't really be reused, so those internal connectors could detach at some point.Once I put things back together, I turned the system on with an OS disk in the DVD drive and .... nothing. It didn't recognize the drive. But that turned out to be my ignorance. I had to use the disk utility to partition and format the drive. Then the OS recognized it. I restored my back up and that was that (almost). I did have to reload ITunes for some reason. No big deal. Now I have a top notch 17" laptop with a very capable 500 GB drive instead of a wimpy 90GB drive. The only other glitch was that my 160GB back up drive needed to be replaced. But there are good 1 TB drives out there for not much money, so no big deal.

Hot and noisy is how I like to party (*sic), not how I like my hard drives. I upgraded my 13" Macbook Pro from the standard hitachi 160gb to this monster of memory device. Packaging and install went swimmingly, but once booted, my previous silent assassin become a pentium 4 notebook circa 2003. I do like the extra space, but the heat on my legs and the sound of the drive is a constant reminder of a poor decision. If done over, I might have gone with the seagate Seagate Momentus 5400 500GB 5400RPM SATA 3Gb/s 8MB Cache 2.5 Inch Internal NB Hard Drive ST9500325AS-Bare Drive or the Hitachi 500GB Travelstar SATA 7200 RPM Laptop Internal Hard Drive HD20500IDK/7K - Retail. Maybe I'm just disappointed large affordable SSDs are not here yet.

I used this hard drive to upgrade my 20GB PS3 to a 500GB PS3. It works perfectly. I haven't had any problems with it and doubt that I will. It fits perfectly in the hard drive cage for the PS3. I have played and saved PS2 and PS3 games on the Playstation 3 and everything works perfectly. I would recommend.

great hard drive. only took me 5 min to install the drive and about the same speed as my original Toshiba drive at installing win7 utl. $50 for a 500gb cant complain. its very quiet and stays cool every during long use. over all its a great buy.

I wasnt the one who installed it so i dont know about the ease of installation but my package arrived way ahead of the estimation date. Im using it in my compaq presario laptop everything seem fine. the minor problem is when i insert DVD in my DVD-ROM to install stuff it makes a loud noise. i dont know if thats cause by this hard drive or not but im pretty sure it wasnt as loud when i was using the original one.

This is my second harddrive i bought from here. My first worked wonderfully in my Ps3 so good in fact i told my buddy about it and i ordered him one too. After installing his it worked for about two weeks and just died. I even put it in my Ps3 and it wont even give me a screen. So its kinda hard for me to rate this because mine works fine but my friends doesn't work at all. Maybe he just got a bad one but me personally i would purchase another if needed. I've had mine for well over a year now so i like it.

I installed the disk and had Windows 7 installed in no time! It has performed well and is quiet as a mouse without vibrations - and I had been really monitoring those characteristics after reading some of the reviews. Great amount of space for the money! Cant be beat!

My initial hesitancy to purchase this drive didn't come from my experience with Western Digital hard drives. It came from Amazons hard drive shipping policy that apparently in the past was quite rough on the drives. The drives used to ship with an airbag after being plastic wrapped to a piece of cardboard. Now they ship in a box within another box that is held in place with two perfectly placed plastic spacers. If this is the newest Amazon shipping policy I think that they deserve some recognition as this system is a drastic improvement.The drive itself is more than adequate for use in the PS3, in fact from my observations I think the WD actually runs cooler than the Seagate HD it replaced. This is the second 320 gig hard drive I have purchased to replace stock a stock PS3 hard drive. After a combined 1200 hours of run time I can safely attest that the drives do their jobs with distinction.The drives are SATA so the install in a PS3 and even a PC are simply plug and play. The drives take longer to mount properly then they do to connect to the MB, or in the case of the PS3 the drive mount tray. If I ever upgrade another PS3 I will most likely buy another of these hard drives to go in it.
