One thing I didn't like is that you can see the individual pixels when up close to the screen. We used a large pull down projector screen.
If your wanting theatre like picture and resolution spend a couple hundred more on one that produces a 1080p signal
Lightweight (easy to port from place to place)
Bright projection (we can start the movie before the sun goes down if we have youngsters with us)
Easy to use (No need to read the manual, just plug and play)
We plan on hosting outdoor football watching parties this fall.
It's small and light enough that I can pop it in a bag and take it over to a friend's house to watch a match or play games.
Only problem is that when image is this big you need a very high quality input or you really notice it.
there is a built-in speaker but don't bother. i just hooked up my old pc speakers w/ a subwoofer and it works great! i use the sleep timer often but i wish it would reset after it turns off because the next time i turn it on, the timer will still be in effect and i have to reset it manually. another minor annoyance.
according to my calculations, the lamp should last me a little over two years. i heard that a new lamp is around $200 and if it stays at that price, i might just buy a newer projector in two years, who knows!
i have my cable box, ps4, chromebox, and media player hooked up to it and they all work just fine. it's really something playing video games or browsing the internet at this scale! i don't know if i could ever go back to a smaller screen.
overall i'm really impressed by the price, picture quality, easy of use, and the quietness. i would definitely consider buying another projector from viewsonic!
p.s. the noise level is virtually silent! which is a huge plus. i do not want to hear a loud fan when i'm watching something :)
Also, the remote seems like it should be easier to use. There are a lot of buttons that would seem to be useful but many do not work with certain set ups. With a laptop, be sure to press the "mouse" button first, otherwise the page up/down don't work (if you're doing a simple powerpoint presentation). Also, the audio has to go through the projector as well (your computer speakers will not work when this is connected--more cords to buy).
I do really like the display on my laptop when this is connected. Unlike the usual powerpoint slideshow view, it shows a timer, current slide, next slide, and other useful info. It took me a moment to get used to this but I really liked the ability to see the next slide. Very nice presentation format.
Despite the set up concerns, this is a good, inexpensive projector. Just read through the instructions and make sure you're setting it up correctly for your input device. Once you know how to use it and have the right connectors, it should be a breeze after that. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again but do make sure you have time to test it out to ensure the set up is correct and you have all the necessary cords (it took several tries with me and I'm reasonably tech savvy).
Would recommend to anyone looking for a starter projector.
I used the reviews to decide which projector to buy because lumens and ratios mean absolutely nothing to me. I just wanted something that would work for family movie and sports events nights. So if you are looking for something for outside, yes, this works great and is far more inexpensive than most I looked at.
At Dusk: Before the sun goes down you can see it, but I don't think it would be too enjoyable of an experience. (Kids probably wouldn't mind though).
At Dark: I tried animated and live action feature films and both looked amazing. Absolutely reminded me of a drive in movie experience. I don't know my diagonals but the screen was 12 feet across (which I believe is a 144, but don't quote me). I had to move the projector around a bit to get exactly the set up I wanted but that took no more than a few minutes.
As far as the other stuff, the other reviews are correct. Quiet fan, light and portable, lworthless speakers. I bought external speakers off of another review and it is perfect.
The only thing I consider a negative, is I wish it had more HDMI ports for easier set up because ipad, speakers, chromecast all use HDMI. Doing research to see if there is some sort of a way to add more with something external?
Finally, I think it is clear that I am not technology savy. I set up to my iPad and DVD/Blu Ray player by myself with no problems. Just remember to power on projector before connecting video source.
I highly recommend.
The one thing prevents me from giving 5 stars is that it's resolution is really low. 800x600 pixels is okay for movies but for demonstrations it's not quite sufficient. The specifications, unfortunately, kind of hiding this by only mentioning SVGA, instead of the actual picture resolution.
Because of the low resolution if the picture is projected to a large screen then you can see each individual pixels. Which is not a huge issue but it makes it not so natural to look.
We have used attached to my computer and a PS3, all via an HDMI cord, and it's been easy. We've streamed netflix, amazon prime, and played video games (GTA V only, so far) all with no problems. Have yet to try 3D, as we only have passive glasses, but we're definitely planning to do so soon.
***Update***
It has been over a year sense I made this purchase in June/July 2014. My projector is still going strong. I think I have only used about 1800 hours of lamp time as I do not use it every single day. It is still great and still a bang for your buck. I will admit that the text is a bit shabby and not very clear. Sometimes I rub my eyes to make sure it is not me but the projector that appears blurry. You literally have to get it right on the mark to have the text appear clear while trying to adjust the zoom in/out feature. Other than that, I really like this thing. It does sometime act as a heater as it blows hot air from trying to cool itself but I think that is with all projectors. Still love this thing and still have not had another tv since.
I use this outside and project onto a 100 inch screen. You can see it clearly around sunset if you're watching something pretty bright. After dark the picture really looks great though!
It does have a speaker. I wouldn't use it though. Buy some basic 2.1 computer speakers. I bought a set for $30 off Amazon. Worthy investment.
Set up is super simple. We have a little table we leave it and the speakers on and just store it in the closet for easy access.
So by saying this, I am very happy with this product. I have had it for 3 days and have watched one hockey game and 2 movies. No its not the brightest picture or 1080p, but it definitely surpassed what I had in mind. It was definitely worth the money for me. I only gave it 4 stars because of the way it is connected to the ceiling mount. But all in all I'm very satisfied with this purchase.
I will say that if you are a perfectionist, you will need to spend more money. Yes, there is a "screen door" effect, but it's not really noticeable from a few feet away. True, the picture is dimmer and slightly fuzzier then on a normal flat-screen TV. When I go to a friends house, I do note that the picture is slightly sharper and brighter. But, the thing about human eyes is that they adjust-- after a minute or so, you won't notice and won't care about these minor imperfections while still enjoying a very large screen to view your TV shows and movies on.
The built-in speakers are worthless, but that should not be an issue since most everyone these days have bluetooth/WiFi speakers. I just hooked up one of my bluetooth speakers to the projector with an aux cable and now have incredible sound.
Not coll guys...
