I previously owned a 3 year model Optoma HD66 that after 3 years of use the white pixels of death covered the screen so I was watching my budget. I saw the good reviews and took a gamble on this Viewsonic. It is OK for me but not great. Probably because I was used to the clarity and performance of the Optoma HD66.
I also could not get the 3d to work with this unit. I had all the HDMI 3d cables (1.4) and even the correct Viewsonic glasses but it didn't work. The most important thing to remember is this need space to cover a 100inch screen. The Optoma was fine as it included the needed adjustments, My screen is 13ft away from my mount point. This projector is basic and does not include the ability to resize the screen the same as the Optoma did.
Pros:
- It turns on and off quickly
- It is quiet
- It synchs quickly
- The colors are nice
- It is lightweight
Cons:
- I see pixelation even with Blue Ray movies
- For a 100ft screen, make sure you have at least 15ft from mount point to screen or it wont fill it.
- I couldn't get 3d to work even with all the required cables, etc.
Bottom line:
If you are used to an adjustable 3d projector (HD 720 and up) you may see the difference and this could be a downgrade for you. If not and you have the room for mounting this will probably be fine.
I was as skeptical as everyone else here. Great reviews on Amazon. when I ordered it was all 5Star reviews. (There's a 1 star now for a faulty product)
Anyway. Wow... just wow. I have this set up 13ft (approx) from my wall. Projecting roughly 92-100" I was so determined to get a screen right away. However, the picture on my wall (offwhite colored wall) is so immense, that I haven't even bothered to measure it for a screen yet. Also, any other projector in this price range with 3D is likely "3D ready" meaning a computer is needed most of the time. This projector is BluRay 3D ready. HDMI in, and done!
I will get a screen to enhance it even more, but the color and contrast are crisp and georgous!! the 800x600 native scare the cr*p out of me. I love HD, I really do. With HDMI plugged in, my laptop went to max resolution at 16:9 widescreen (Which is not listed in the description)
The widescreen viewing area fits inside the 800x600 viewing area, but again I'm still able to get 92-100" WIDESCREEN from approx 12-13ft. Movies and TV look absolutely incredible. Xbox 360 games look stunning. I can use this during the day with the blinds closed. I still get a lot of ambient light, and the picture still looks great. At night IT SHINES!, but still very watchable during the day.
On to the cherry on top of the cake (3D!!!) I bought a pair of 3DTVCorp glasses. Synched with projector as soon as the powered on. I turned on IMAX Under the Sea 3D and sat down about 8 feet from the wall. Not too soon after, a GIANT fish was swimming out of my screen and looked like it was about 12inches from my face.
As with every 3D experience, the source material (Movie) is key. IMAX know how its done, but there are some wonderful movies also (I highly reccomend Life of Pi) The Tiger pounced out of my screen and scared me to death!
I had to ramble on here becuase it just is that good for the price. Overall, I would have expected to pay AT LEAST $600-1000 for this.
The reviews regarding the sound that comes from the product are true, the sound quality that comes from it isnt the greatest, but if you have external speakers, the problem is eradicated.
It is true, the room has to be somewhat dark (or at least have somewhat decent shades) to be able to view during the day time.
I use this to watch content i have on my Ipad and it works awesome with an HDMI cable hookup. Sometimes it has trouble deciding which speaker outlet to use (i have a bluetooth connected speaker *jambox*) because when connected to the projector it wants to use the projectors speakers. ***SOLUTION: connect ipad to projector first - before starting a video, go into settings and re-calibrate the speakers - then you can play the video as normal and the sound should be coming through the speakers not the projector.
For a projector screen I use a white shower curtain (not frosted......white) and i have it projecting from the front.
If you want to project it from the rear, use a frosted curtain.
The results?
Both projectors are amazing for the price - but, for an extra $50, the Optoma was noticeably better - sharper, with better colors and image quality. If you're on a really tight budget, this ViewSonic is definitely not a bad choice. On the other hand, for only $50 more, you go from 800x600 on this (which is almost unusable today) to 1366 x 768 on the Optoma.
It's also worth noting that the Optoma is a little bigger and roughly a pound heavier - so, if you're carrying it around a lot, that might make a difference. But, if you're using it for movies, or setting it up in an office, the size difference is pretty minor.
I hope you found this helpful! Feel free to leave comments and questions below.
first off this is NOT NATIVE 1080P... native resolution is a measly 800x600... but NATIVE MERELY MEANS that is the "best resolution" for the projector... not to be misleading. HOWEVER it does perform brilliantly on 1080P sources... and a very possitive reference is the HDMI cable i am using is 35 feet long INTO a 1x2 splitter then into the av receiver... that had me worried but there were NO LAG or sync issues, the HDMI boost enhance feature really works, that is proof.
Image is clear and decent contrast, it is wise to use a screen if you want a brighter picture and more contrast, contrast is 15000:1 not bad at all for a projector, even way pricier ones go around that.
LUMENS is very good... It is claimed 3000... it certainly is bright... I'm projecting on a 120 inch screen and it does the job just right.
3D sync... was perfect, right off the bat and I have to say, pretty impressive... as good as the movie theater.
Function... it does have a fan, it is not dead silent, but pretty decent... not intrusive. It warms up pretty quickly, with image appearing fully bright in under 10 seconds. Source syncing is impressive, You turn it on and before it lights up, you alrwady have video sync, in the proper aspect, if your source is on.
Menus, are clear, and the MY BUTTON function is a great addition to the remote, I have 3D Sync setup there and it happens with just one button.
I have to say I'm throwing everything at this thing, using all of it's features and it has delivered in all of them... using my cable box (in SD, 1080 and 1080 3D)... blue ray... and game console through my AVR receiver.
Do your HOMEWORK when buying a projector... check3D glasses compatibility... about throw distances, etc. there's plenty of online info available.
I believe for the price, this is a tough one to beat.
As it turns out, going with the "popular" option turned out to work well - all the reviews and videos I found proved to shine true. I was amazed to find that somehow 800x600 pixels with an HDMI input from a PlayStation 3 turns out to look completely stunning. If you have worries about such a low resolution ruining your Netflix and video games, fear not. I am certainly not an expert, but I don't think I could really be happier. Only a few things happened with my particular unit that brought my review down. The center screw-foot that adjusts the height doesn't have an even rubber foot. As a result, I had to put a piece of paperboard under one of the corner feet to create a correct image. The other issue is the audio output - it's not a particularly tight-fitting element. I had to adjust the plug to the sound system to get both the left and right channels working (same happened with a pair of headphones). In the end, the projector isn't moving so I'm not worried.
Pros
- Solid build quality, enough features, inexpensive
The projector is well built, and because it does not offer some of the latest bells and whistles such as HDMI connectivity, 1080p resolution, etc, it is offered at a very good price. Perfect for our classroom needs. We use them at Sunday school classrooms, where they are connected to laptops and iPads.
- Display quality
Image projected are crystal sharp and super bright... can't ask for any better, very satisfied.
- Relatively light weight
Not the smallest and lightest like those micros but those pocket types are pretty much lacking in resolution and brightness
- Other
Using standard computer power cable and connector. We had Vivitek projectors bought a few years ago, which use non standard power cable and connector. The connector on the projector was pretty flimsy, we've had a couple broken ones. Power cable was also proprietary, which was very difficult to replace when lost. So this time in our purchase we paid specific attention to not buy something that uses non standard power cable/connector.
Cons
- Does not include carrying case
Maybe I'm used to buying projectors with carrying cases, especially the type that are for office/school use. Carrying these without a case is cumbersome at best. What makes it worse, the separately sold ViewSonic carrying case for this model has been out of stock. It's been a few weeks but we are still using projectors without carrying cases.
PROS:
Turns on fast
Bright Bright Bright i can see it plain as day in the day time
Good colors i have tried GTA 5 and it looked awsome
Cheap! as far as im aware this is the best deal yet!
2 vga ports and composite!
Very Very LIGHT
CONS:
No HDMI (BUT I DID PURCHASE THE CHEAPER MODEL SO I AM AWARE OF THAT)
and nothing else...
OVERALL GREAT BUY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
The HDMI port enabled me to keep my chromecast plugged in permanently and cast different services directly on the projector from all my devices.
The only CON i can think of:
The projectors lamp is permanently adjusted at projecting for more than 20 degrees above the parallel. So if you plan to install the projector at a wall behind you so that you can project on the wall in front of you, and if the distance is more than 10 feet, then you will be required to install the projector to a lower height, at maybe 4 - 5 feet. This makes it difficult to install it exactly behind you seating arrangement. I solved this by installing a syrofoam plank under the hind legs of the projector thereby reducing the angle of projection.
Pros:
- The light is strong enough to see the projection even in a lit room.
- The HD is smooth and crisp.
- The size of the image and the focus ability is very easy to adjust
- It's small enough to where it can fit in pretty much every cubby-hole, so if you have a book shelf or something like that then it'll work perfectly.
- It has all the ports you need (HDMI, VGA, RGB, USB, Aux, etc.)
Cons:
- If you don't have an external sound appliance (ie. soundbar, surround sound, etc.) then the sound out of the projector is crap and really annoying. BUT I have some Turtle Beachs that I hook up while I play games and that's totes mcgoats dope.
- Walking in front of the projection is obviously a suck-fest. Try to have a ceiling mount or something really high up on the wall. I'm 6' with 6'4" friends and a low ceiling so that part is tough.
Overall, for the price range, it's a great buy and it's cheaper than the TV you're going to get of the same screen size. I've got my projection on the wall at about 80". So that's pretty dope, considering.
