I got this unit to run DD-WRT. This unit has locked up 5 times in the last month under very light load. I flashed back to the original factory firmware to see if it ran any better. It still randomly locks up. My old Buffalo WHRG54 has been running DD-WRT for years and never locks or needs to be rebooted.The unit also has disappointingly low transmit power (18dbm = 63 millwatts). My Buffalo router normally runs at 120 milliwatts (under DD-WRT) and can go even higher. Even with DD-WRT the TPLINK cannot go any higher. I measured the signal strength throughout my house and the TP-LINK was lower than the Buffalo.Maybe I just got a bad unit, but this router is too unreliable for my use. I returned it.

I bought this about 1 year ago, and it seemed fine except for some losses of connectivity, perhaps once per day.Usually a reboot would restore connectivity. Gradually it got worse, so I tried dd-wrt firmware which I thought would help.Ultimately dd-wrt, though very nice, did not stop the loss of connectivity to our ISP. We suffered with having to frequently reboot the router (and sometimes the cable modem) for many months until last week. I called our ISP to see if any of the problem was on their end. Turns out it was all on their end. A squirrel had chewed through part of the cable supplying my modem. Cable was repaired, and now connection is solid - router works perfectly. This makes me wonder how many bad reviews for all brands of home routers are dues to non-router issues.

Got this router yesterday as a gift and so far I'm loving it. I needed an 802.11n router since I move a lot of large files around wirelessly. I picked out this one and put it on my wishlist because it supports DD-WRT firmware. Turns out I didn't even need it as the stock firmware was just as useful and feature filled as DD-WRT and it is supported and warranted by TP-LINK. Guess I'll stay stock.Another great feature is built in MAC spoofing. Our ISP does MAC address binding which means I need to call them every time I change the piece of equipment that's connected to our modem. Not this time! I set it to spoof the MAC of our old router and it connected right up without having to wait on hold for 30 minutes.

Sadly, not being very tech savvy I can't get it to work with my new laptop. I need for doing wireless work and move computer from room to room and my wireless printer scanner, fax needs to work too.

I'll give them some credit to begin, this router is jam packed full of features. Additionally, if that's not enough it will support DDWRT.That's where the good stuff ends. This router has miserable wireless performance. I've got a small apartment and the signal refuses to penetrate even a single wall. Routine the router will refuse to issue new ip addresses and needs to be restarted and even when you do have an ip address it frequently refuses to process traffic. I have no idea how this router is so highly rated. If you want my 2 cents, spend the extra couple of bucks to get a name brand router. (Belkin, Netgear, Linksys, etc)

I found this hard to set up. I am experienced in setting up routers, but I had to go online to use the setup program, and couldn't get online without the setup program. Catch-22. It came with a mini CD, but that is useless for my Macbook, or any CD reader without a tray.If I ever tried any simple tweak, it failed entirely and I had to go back to factory settings before I could access the setup program again. Very annoying.However, for the brief periods it worked it did work very well. Still, I have lost patience and am returning.

"Upgraded" from my old D-link DI-524 that I've had since roughly late 2004/05. Lan performance seemed normal, but wireless was literally unusable. Sites wouldn't load, pages would time out, etc. Did a firmware upgrade but it didn't fix anything. Changed wireless channel, mode, width... Nothing helped. Returning. Not sure what I'll be getting instead. Back to the old D-link for now :/

I always read the 1-star reviews before I buy anything, thinking that the people that hate it must have some good reasons to write about the product. This time, having debated buying a Cisco/Linksys comparable product for more than twice as much as TP-Link, I decided to take a gamble and go with the low-cost substitute. After using various generations of Linksys routers for the past 15 years, that was a BIG step for me. If only Cisco had commanded more flattering reviews, I wouldn't have made the switch. But if I had to put up with a low-quality (not so cheap) Cisco router, I might as well give the new kid on the block one try. It turns out the TP-Link TL-WR1043N router I got was a really good piece of hardware. The setup was relatively easy. Granted, I had to spend 20 minutes on it. But that's only because I deliberately chose to go the manual route instead of using the included CD to set up the router. I just hate these seemingly simple "setup for dummies" approach that shroud everything on the device yet potentially leave problems undetected.My router sits behind a cable modem, before a Time Capsule that serves as a second router, and carries an AT&T MicroCell signal booster, in addition to a networked laser printer. I also set up two seperate wifi networks, one on the router, one on Time Capsule so it can drive multiple Airport Express-powered Airtune speakers and extended wireless network throughout my house. I won't describe my setup as simple. Yet 20 minutes was all I needed to get the TP router working without a glitch. It makes me wonder if these other 1-star reviews are talking about the same product. Guess I have to wait a few weeks/months to have the final word. For now, it handily beats my old Linksys G router and saved me a bundle off the overpriced Cisco N router. I tested my new speed on my iPad, iPhone, PCs, and Macs, everything is blazing fast, 2x or 3x the speed before switching from G to N.I love competition!

Pros:* Initial config took 8 minutes, including port forwarding, etc.* Performance is outstanding.* Price is great* Supported by DD-WRT and OpenWRT* USB port sharing works for simple configs.Cons:* USB port provides only enough power for memory key, not 2.5" external drive.* File/Media sharing config is awkward.* Only 16 port forwarding rules allowed.* Blocking specific WAN-side hosts is complex* No VPN even though HW can do it.* No VLANs even though HW can do it.* Lag, hangs, crashes, based on usage.Overall, I would recommend this as-is for any home user.For power users, offices, high traffic connections, and hackers, maybe OpenWRT would help this (will try next week)Power users, or Mac Users might want the NetGear WNDR3800 for 2.5x the cost.Corporate users might want something with VPN support built into the stock OS.

Hello,I've used many many of these routers and they're good. I should let you know that I have 0 experience with them using the factory programming. I have always changed over to DD-WRT firmware on these to get the added features.I can say that loaded with DD-WRT firmware, www.dd-wrt.com, this router is a powerhouse. It is exceedingly reliable, has some of the better signal ranges I've seen. Out of the 20 or so of these I've worked with I've only had one fail, better than my experience with any other brand/model of router.Also, after you change to DD-WRT firmware and find you need to switch back it's also extremely easy, just load the firmware through the web UI and off you go.

I've had this router for about 4 month now and it's been nothing but a problem from day one. Had to call tech support the first day I got it just to get it working. It took them the better part of an hour trying different security setting be for they could get it online.Since then it goes off line at least once a day and it takes 3-4 resets to get to come back. Save your money and get a better router.

I don't think there's anything as frustrating as setting up a new toy, only to find out that it doesn't work! The first one I got turned on and looked like it was working (the wireless worked), but the wired LAN ports didn't work and no lights came on when plugging in a cable. Called tech support and they said I needed a new one.The 2nd one works fine -- setting up was a bit tricky since the built-in software didn't seem to be picking up the internet from the modem. I flashed it with DD-WRT and it worked great. It was my first time flashing and it went smoothly -- just download the correct file, then upload it through the router's web-interface. I can't speak to the longevity of the router, but so far it has been stable and faster than the g router it replaced.

this is an awesome router with exellent range . the speed is incredible. what an improvement over my last router!!!! i would recomend this to anyone that needs decent range in a large household or office enviroment

Some suggestions:(1) Use the instructions in the Users Guide for installing the router - the installation software on the CD didn't work for me, but the written instructions are clear enough.(2) Update the firmware before you get too far in configuring the router.There was a nasty bug in the installed firmware that caused the router to freeze if you tried to display wireless statistics. This is fixed in the firmware dated August, 2010.(2) If you're thinking of replacing an old b/g wireless router with this, don't toss the old router yet!Many wireless devices such as printers and music systems (like Sonos) do not support the 11n standard yet. At first I tried running the TP-Link router in mixed b/g/n mode. For some reason the performance was exceptionally slow. But, it's easy to link your old router into the network so that the b/g devices will use the old router. The TP-Link router can then be set to 11n-only for excellent performance for devices that support it. Here's how to do it:- Give each router a different IP address, say 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2. Make sure both are outside the range of dynamic IP addresses.- Give both routers the same SSID so that they will form a single network.- Assign each router to different wireless channels. (1 or 6 or 11 are usually recommended).- Turn off DHCP or other WAN support in the b/g router. Set up the TP-Link with WAN support (such as DHCP) and connect to the ADSL or cable modem.- In the b/g router, add the MAC addresses of the 11n devices to its MAC filter list. These are devices you DON'T want to connect to it.(Of course, if you have many more 11n devices than b/g ones, do the reverse: create a filter list with only the devices you DO want to connect).- Link the b/g router to any LAN port on the TP-Link router with an Ethernet cable.That should be it. Enjoy!

Fast, fast, fast connection speed. I have Optimum Boost Plus and when I connect wirelessly through this router, I can use all that delicious bandwidth no problem. I ran a speedtest and was pulling down 48 Mbps. It's a little weird to set up (it told me it failed, but then it worked anyway), but it only took about 15 minutes. My computer is going to be pulled over for speeding on the Internet.

I was a little bit worried by some reviewers having problems with the firmware for this router, but I decided to go ahead and risk it since the price was such a good deal for the hardware. The setup wasn't perfectly smooth but all of the problems I had during setup were covered in the documentation and were easily resolved. It has been working great since then, connections seem a bit faster, connections are much more reliable (i.e. no problems at all), and I haven't had to restart it a single time (I have had it for about a month).I have tried using a external hard disk with the router. I got it to work fine but the method for connecting is a little awkward. That said I have a feeling this might be the case for other routers with similar capabilities, so no real complaints there.Other thoughts:-The router looks better in person than in the display picture.-They did a good job on the router's user interface.

This router is an awesome router fro the price. The ONLY disappointing thing about it is that the antennae are NOT removable like the description says. I bought 9db antennae to replace the smaller ones, just to find out that the ones on the unit could not be removed.

Just received this TP-Link TL-WR1043ND 2 days ago. Setup took a few minutes. The Range is better than my old Netgear G series router. I will be coming back in the future to update this review. So far, so good.3 month update: Still running good.

Installation was easy. Followed directions on the enclosed CD and installed in less than 5 minutes. Reception throughout the house is great. I have the unit in my basement and have good reception on the second floor of my house and also outside by the pool. I highly recommend this wireless router.
