Purchased this drive after quite a bit of study. The fact that it was an open box item and used at that didn't deter me in that, according to the ad, it had been removed from new test laptops. I was deployed to Kuwait at the time of purchase and was surprised that the delivery was sooner than expected and was happy for that. The installation into my Macbook Pro 15" mid 2011 laptop was easy enough so I was up and running in no time.Noise: None really. The other reviewers noticed loud humming, but I didn't hear or feel anything.Seek speeds: I updated my ram at the same time from 4 to 8 gig so I am not sure which made the biggest impact, but the speed difference from startup through my graphic intense movie making, keynotes and pages applications, as well as accessing iPhoto, itunes, parallels 7 running the Army Golden master Win Vista and searching the web, to managing sometimes 4 or 5 desktops and 6 or seven applications at the same time, to rebooting completely into windows 7 via Bootcamp and playing intense PC games like black ops and FEAR 3 to shutdown showed a dramatic improvement in performance overall.Battery Usage: I initially noticed a small hit on my, upwards of five hours of, battery life under normal use. I flew to and from Germany on leave with a full charge and managed to watch two movies (one hard drive mounted and one USB media) and worked for hours on my project books that I am writing using either microsoft word or pages and had enough power left to reboot into win 7 and play about 40 minutes of medal of honor, so no complaints there. It was a month or so later when I noticed that the hard drive didn't always go to sleep. No matter the power settings it would spin through the night and, if not completely shut down and not plugged in, would kill my battery by morning. It may have been a power management issue from some mac fluke, but I now have a 1 TB drive and the 750 Seagate in the same macbook pro. The Toshiba 1 TB that I installed over Christmas by removing the optical drive that has its own operating system will sleep and my battery will last and last. But if I boot up on the Seagate and walk away, the drive will be spinning when I return. If I'm not plugged in, it will kill the battery.Next Step: I am migrating everything from the seagate to the toshiba (5400 rpm by the way) once I do that the Seagate will be reformatted as a storage drive only. More than likely when that happens the problem will go away. If so I will update this report.Hope this information helps.

Update 2013.04.06: The drive's operation so far has been great and DrivePulse the background drive diagnostics hasn't registered any warnings. I've gotten a lot of use out of it almost everyday, I've run a couple of intense integrity tests and bad sector W/R scans on it as well with no errors. I use Disk Genius 3 which has DrivePulse which monitors drive health and operation continuously. It used to issue some drive error warning with the old Hitachi drive but nothing with this one so far.Review: I have read some reviews of people who had bad luck with this 750GB drive. I don't know the circumstances involved or if the drive was defective out of the box, but so far this drive has been perfect. I guess my reason for flying in the face of reviews of failures is that Seagate is one drive make that has been stellar to me over many years. Brands I've had consistently bad luck with and steer clear of like the plague because of multiple drive failures for me as well as friends and at work are IBM now Hitachi and Western Digital. Before I installed it in my MacBook Pro to replace the terribly slow and quirky original Hitachi Travelstar. I ran the integrity test on it with Disk Genius 3 which gives the drive a rigorous workout for an hour and gets the temperature rather warm too. The drive tested perfect. I have very good drive monitoring and repair software so I'll know if there's something wrong with it (I've done data/drive recovery for a few people). I would recommend this drive if you have a fast laptop that feels not so much having pauses or you use it for A/V production. I upgraded my 2008 MacBook Pro and I have it doing all kinds of things without those long pauses or pinwheels and freezing video that I was plagued by earlier. I had it jacked into my A/V system watching a movie on Netflix with Silverlight which is a real POS pig, interwebz surfing with about 10 tabs, recording an LP, running Torrent, and running a constant 1 hour hard drive integrity test on another external drive. The drive benchmarked way higher than the original and scored write speeds as high as 102 GB/s vs the about 40 GB/s that the old drive scored. There is no notable increase in drive noise and an only just notable increase in temperature on the MacBook's aluminum case where the drive is. The increase in power consumption looks negligible and I don't think you'd notice any difference in battery life. The new hard drive made it all smooth. Before the drive upgrade with little computer activity VinylStudio would frequently stop recording and complain that the drive is too busy to write to. The old drive was a 250 GB 5400 RPM Travelstar and it really slowed the Mac down.As usual I'll update my review if anything bad happens or otherwise noteworthy occurs...

Just like any product, you have some that work good, and you have some bad ones that slip through the cracks. Fortunately for me, I got one of the good ones. I actually bought this same drive for my 13" MACBOOK PRO 2010 version, and it has worked stellar ever since. My original was a 250GB Hitachi 5400RPM, worked great but I needed more space. So after doing quite a bit of researched I finally decided to get the SEAGATE MOMENTUS 750GB 7200RPM. I chose SEAGATE cause it bought out MAXTOR and MAXTOR if you know anything about them, had in my opinion the best drives on the market. Known for their low power consumption and super quiet drives, The Maxtor has served me well in the past, so I decided to stick with that line.I went to YOUTUBE to watch a tutorial on how to swap out the old HD with the new, and I bought an HD clone kit from FRY'S ELECTRONICS fairly cheap. The entire process took about 10 hours to complete (so please have patience) after the transfers were complete, I finished the installation of the new drive and placed the old 250 in an external enclosure. Lets just say that both HD's have worked flawlessly. If my memory serves me correctly, I believe I purchased it and installed this unit in Feb of 2011, paid a little more for it back then than what it's going for now but :( However, I wouldn't trade it for the world. Its super quiet, and despite what tech's told me initially, this unit doesn't get very hot, its relative to the older drive. Battery consumption is about the same. Im on here now because I've just about filled this one up.....LOL and now I looking to get a good drive to place into an external firewire 400/800 enclosure and transfer some of my files to it to free up space in my MBP.You might be wondering why I just don't up-grade to a 1TB or larger, weeeeeeeeell I was told that if a 1TB & above HD crashes, that its super hard for tech's to locate your files, if they have to do a back up or get information from it. So that's why I stay @ 750GB or less.Hope this helps!!!

I have seen my share of HDD's over the years. Seagate is the worst HDD ever sold. After years of watching their drives crash and burn and watch how seagate customer service treated the customer, I turned my back on them for good. I came on here to leave a review about this drive. (AMAZON IS AWESOME!!) Two of these drives back to back from different sellers were bad. The third drive, would work in almost every computer except the one it was supposed to go into. Asus laptop will not see these seagate drives. I can put in any other brand HDD and the Asus will see them, but it will not see the seagate. 11 emails and 10 calls brought nothing from seagate, then over a month later, they send an email blaming it on Windows and a firmware update. Sorry but your HDD is junk. If I could leave worse than a 1 star I would. I dont know this company selling this on here, and I am sure they are good but this drive is junk and I dont want to see anyone spend their money on something with known issues. My customer is sending the last seagate HDD back and will not purchase another seagate product. Way to knock them out seagate. Two customers, 1 stone.

Pros:- A pretty inexpensive upgrade and much cheaper than through Apple directly. Also a lot cheaper than the other major brand's 7.2k drive.- WORKS, not DOA, and very minimal noise/vibration in my Macbook Pro 7,1 Mid-2010 Core 2-duo 2.4GHz running lion 10.7.3 and then 10.7.4.- Arrived faster than Amazon stated it would.- Still cheaper than that hybrid-SSD/HDD thingy- Arrived undamagedCons:- Price dropped by 10% by the time it arrived in my mailbox (but this makes it an even better deal for you!)- it is slightly louder than the stock 5400rpm drive (duh, it's 7200 rpm).- Slightly warmer palm rests than with the stock drive- I hate to say it, but the computer doesn't feel faster.- Only has a two year warranty (the other brand has 5-year but you pay more for it).Thoughts:- I've only had the drive for a few days, so keep that in mind.- I upgraded it along with 8GB of RAM. The strange thing is that the computer really doesn't feel appreciably faster! I think it's done indexing but I'm praying it's not - otherwise this would not be a good upgrade for speed alone (I needed more storage).- In the unibody mac if the stock HD had 0-out-of-10 level of vibration (and a 10 out of 10 would be a badly unbalanced CD spinning up), this drive is a 1 out of 10. Not bad whatsoever. The last 7.2k RPM drive I had was in my non-unibody plastic macbook, and MAN the vibration was really, really bad like a 5 or 6 out of 10. I think it has more to do with the build quality of the computer. I would never stick a 7200 rpm drive in a plastic macbook for this reason.- I haven't tested the power drain with the new drive.- One of the reasons I bought this "traditional" hard drive instead of the new hybrid SSD/HD drives, despite the advantages of those drives, is that there are known issues with Mac laptops. Numerous internet postings show functional issues with drives spinning down and the drive's parent company doesn't have a solution. Rather than take a risk on what seemed to be not-fully-tested hardware I bought this traditional drive and so far, so good.- If the drive fails prematurely I will update this review.

I have always been a Seagate guy, so I bought this drive to replace the stock drive in my Mid-2009, 17" MacBook Pro. As soon as I purchase and installed the drive, I noticed that the entire corner where the drive was housed within the case (to the left of the trackpad), was very warm. After installing iStat, I realized that the drive was running at about 105-110*F idle. While I would expect the drive to get that warm during long reads/writes, this was the idle temperature of this drive.I waited a couple of weeks to see if the high temperatures would subside, but they persisted. Due to the aluminum unibody of the MacBook Pro, the heat radiated through the body of the computer and made the notebook uncomfortably hot and virtually unusable. I returned the drive to Amazon and purchased the Western Digital WD Scorpio Black 750 GB SATA 3 GB/s 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache Internal Bulk/OEM 2.5-Inch Mobile Hard Drive and it has worked out much better for me. I have been using the WD drive now for a few months and actually just put the same drive into another machine just like mine, and it has been working flawlessly.Ultimately, although it seemingly worked fine, I would not recommend this Seagate drive to anyone because of the high temperature that the drive runs at. Assuredly, the increased drive heat would ultimately lead to a shorter drive lifetime, and drive failure is something that nobody wants to deal with. Very disappointed in Seagate when it comes to this drive.

So i usually never write reviews but i just wanted to let you guys know that it works perfectly for the Fat 80GB PS3. Idk if it works with the new slimmer ps3, im assuming it should but i upgraded my 80GB PS3 to a 500GB PS3. Now i have soo much space and its running just fine with no over heating issues. I got this for the ps3 instead of the 7200 Seagate 500GB hard drive because ive read a lot of reviews before buying this and a lot of them were saying that there might be compatiblity issues if you buy a 7200 RPM harddrive because the ps3 comes with a 5400 RPM. I also read that, with video proof, that even with a 7200RPM hard drive that there isnt any significant (notiticable) difference between having a 7200 RPM harddrive vs a 5400 RPM harddrive in your ps3. So you're better off using this to replace your PS3 hard drive. I know its only around $10 more for the 7200 RPM one but me personally, i rather not have compatibility problems in the future or risk having my ps3 overheat. (But one thing i noticed was that during downloading the ps3's fan turns on faster and louder, maybe thats how it always is and maybe i didn't notice that with my old hard drive because i barely did any downloading due to lack of space, but yeah thats something i noticed. It can kind of being annoying with it background downloading in a dorm room while your trying to sleep, but like i said idk if that is normal with the ps3 because i never did much downloading due to my lack of space on my previous 80GB harddrive)Replacing the hard drive is really easy and took me about 5 minutes(without counting the back up time using the PS3's backup utility), there are plenty of videos on YouTube showing you how to do it, and how to back up your PS3 data to an external hard drive(which has to be formatted in FAT32) so checkout YouTube for instructional videos on how to replace your PS3 hard drive and back up and restore everything. Those videos really help if you are new at this.I replaced the hard drive a month ago and it works just fine. I didn't need to put an expensive hard drive in the PS3 because i also read that the PS3 might limit the speed of the hard drives past 5400RPM to stop over heating issues. Idk how this hard drive works for a laptop(because i use two 500GB seagate momentous xt hybrid hard drives for my laptop) but for replacing a PS3 hard drive this should do just fine. Its a fairly cheap, effective way to replace your PS3 hard drive and i suggest using Seagate hard drives over other drives due to my experience with their reliability and less likeliness to fail compared to other hard drives.Hope this helps :)UPDATE: Its been 4 months since i have bought this and i have downloaded over 250+GB of data from the playstation store and else where onto my PS3 with this harddrive i have upgraded and its work perfectly, without any problems. I have left my PS3 on for hours at a time, even over night, for background downloading with this harddrive installed in it and it hasnt caused any problems. The downloads even seem to be downloading a little faster than they used to on my old 80GB factory installed harddrive that came with my PS3 when i bought it. I expect this to last the life of my PS3 and longer.I would definitely recommend this harddrive for anyone looking to upgrade their PS3 harddrive to a bigger one. Only if Sony sold their PS3s with 500GB harddrives, we wont have to spend money to upgrade them lol but oh well

I bought this HD to upgrade my PS3's 160 that was already full, this HD was perfect I backed up the PS3 first then downloaded the Ps3 update from the PSN network page onto a pendrive, took out the old Hd, installed this one, plugged the pendrive turned on the Ps3 and followed the instructions, the pendrive will load the system info and then the PS3 will format the HD, after that it will install system and your PS3 will be like it came from the factory, right there you will connect the External Hd to then restore or install the backup you did before, and Wallahh you will have a new Hd and all your stuff the same way it was, remember this will take a long while if your old HD id full like mine was, but Is worth it, I did the backup one day and the replacement the next day...Tank you amazon for this great combo of External HD and internal HD, Now I have a Kickass PS3

I have had issues in the past with hard drives for this system. After reading the reviews on here of successful install on other PS3 systems I purchased it. One has to read the screen when you install the software which hmm I was not seeing duh. What I am referring to is pressing select and start at the same time. Which enables the system to check for software on other sources. All when will after that and I upgraded my 40 GB to 500GB HDD.This size of drive is larger size than any new system one could purchase. Plus saving me $300 plus on a new system. There are 3GB units on the market etc. I did read on the web ( not sure if true) that the newer PS3 models with a certain model number are not HDD upgradable. To find out more about this search the web. Over all the upgrade when with no issues, Just backup you system before you upgrade. Most DLC that you have on your system like game updates and movies have to be re-downloaded. Although some games I had that was older like PS2 games were backed up.Dave

This drive is faster than my other ones (WD Scorpio Blue, Toshiba Canvio and Seagate Backup+, all 5400rpm). I purchased it to upgrade the speed on my 5-year-old Aspire notebook. Boot-ups are now around 7-10 seconds faster and programs load quicker, too. Vibration and noise levels have not noticeably changed. That's really the only good things about this drive. Battery life has diminished 15 minutes on a 3-hour cell and it runs so much hotter than anticipated - by about 10 degrees. It gets uncomfortably warm even when accessing the least demanding of programs. All in all, I am not very satisfied with the upgrade. The increased heat and poor battery life just make this drive much too inefficient for a valid increase in performance.

I bought this to upgrade an older dell latitude E1505 laptop. That laptop had a older 5400 RPM low capacity hard drive. This is the 3rd time I have bought the momentus hybrid drive. I've bought 2 500GB drives and now this 320GB drive. They are not as fast as a Solid state drive but do offer better performance then a comparable regular 7200 drive. I would compare to 10k RPM drives, but you don't have the extra heat or noise. The other 2 drives are now about 2 years old and are in a latitude E6410 and a Dell XPS laptop. They all now perform fantastic with improved startup and access then the older 5400 rpm drives they replacedRemember any drive that is 3-5 years old is just a ticking time bomb. I would think about replacing any hard drive at 3 years and replace ASAP at 5 years. For the price, its a great insurance policy. If you don't want to replace, then make sure that computer is not being used in a high cost or need situation. No matter what you should always have a solid backup system. I use a combination of a easy access USB flash drive and a online replication service like dropbox or google drive. I also recommend carbonite to those not concerned with mobility of information.

I bought this to upgrade my Ps3 from a 160gb hard drive to a 500gb. hard drive. I was down to 16 gb of space and being a PS+ member, I needed more space. After reading all the positive reviews I decided to go with the Seagate Momentus 5400. I downloaded the firmware update from the PlayStation store onto a USB flash drive, swapped, out the hard drives (incredibly easy), hooked everything backed up and the Ps3 guided me through the rest.I was really surprised as to how easy the whole process was and that everything worked without a hitch. The only thing that was time consuming was the time it took to re-download all my games from the PlayStation store. The new drive works great, it very quiet and I highly recommend it for anyone thinking of doing a hard drive upgrade on a Ps3.

I'm sorry Seagate, but you messed this one up big time. I've done all I could've done, and within half a week of use it's making a high pitched whine and clunking (aka searching for a sector and can't find it, and resetting.)This is an item you make, see it fail, and pull from the market so no one makes the mistake of buying again. I should have read the other reviews, but it turned out to be no different at all. Will return temporarily back to my other Seagate 5300rpm drive and get another NON-hybrid system, probably from seagate (I have had good luck with other seagate drives). But this, while it seemed like a good idea, is not.

For the first 5 months of using this drive in a Dell Precision laptop, it worked great. Then I started noticing sluggish performance. At first I thought it was a fragmented drive or the virus scan, but that was not the case. At month 7, Windows started telling me that the drive was failing. It was especially noticeable when swapping large files with virtual memory. Using Seagate's SeaTools test tool, I confirmed that the SMART test and Short DST test failed. This is my third Seagate laptop drive to fail in the past 2 years.

I originally bought a Western Digital WD Scorpio Black 750 GB SATA 3 GB/s 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache Internal Bulk/OEM 2.5-Inch Mobile Hard Drive for use in my mid-2009 15-inch MacBook Pro (MacBookPro5,4). It had a major problem which I believe is due to a defect in the design of this version of the MacBook Pro. I replaced the Scorpio with a Seagate Momentus with comparable specs, and it has been working great. The Seagate drives have an important feature which the Western Digital drives do not: a jumper which allows you to limit the speed of the SATA link to 1.5Gb/s. This turned out to be critical for me, since my version of the MacBook Pro apparently has problems with 3Gb/s drives. Lowering the transfer speed to 1.5Gb/s fixes everything. I'm probably reducing the performance of the drive slightly, but that's irrelevant, since the Scorpio at 3Gb/s was unusable to due the SATA link constantly resetting, each time freezing my computer for 30 seconds.

Before I get into specifics, this caution - note the date and model on this (and other) Seagate internal hard drive reviews. Amazon lumps together drives of differing technology, size, and generation into one review pile. Look for the reviews that actually apply to the drive you're considering.Even though I read multiple reviews warning that this 750GB drive is prone to failure, I'm an optimist so I bought one anyway. About two weeks later, my computer crashed with a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) which turned out to be due to a bad sector that had developed in a critical system file. I ran a repair, got the machine working again, and two days later got another BSOD from more newly-developed bad sectors. The drive's built-in SMART diagnostic system is now predicting imminent drive failure. Given the number of people who have had similar experiences with this Seagate 750GB internal laptop product, one that has not been on the market that long, Seagate should stop selling it until they fix the problem. If you're even more optimistic than I am and buy this drive anyway, be aware of another problem (albeit fixable) that nobody will tell you about in advance. This 750GB drive uses a new 4k sector size. Seagate advertises that they have built-in code that should make the sector size transparent to your system. While it seems to be true that the drive doesn't require you to install special software to accommodate its sector size, nevertheless your machine may require that you install an updated version of Intel's Matrix Storage Manager before the drive will function properly. You will get errors that don't tell you that this is the problem. I had to figure it out for myself by web searches, and if I had not had been computer literate I would never have gotten the drive working in the first place.Note that all this feedback only applies to the 750GB drive. Drives of capacity up to 500 GB use a "standard" sector size and don't have identical issues. I have owned the 500GB drive in this same line for a long time with no problems.

I've had the Seagate Momentus 750GB 7,200RPM SATA 3Gb/s 16MB Cache for a few days now.I purchased this hard drive to put in a disk drive caddy in my Mid-2010 Macbook. I didn't really use the disk drive anymore and could use the extra space. I was looking for something to actually match the internal transfer speed which is 3Gb/s and this does. It was easy to install in to the caddy, showed up right away without any problem and I've put about 300GB of information on it thusfar and haven't had any problems accessing it and linking to it off my primary boot drive. It has significantly increased render times and stream times versus the external USB drive I was using previously (or having to use one internal drive).I would recommend this item to others if they were looking for an internal laptop drive that balances speed, space and cost.
