Well just like others have said, It does start to die on you close to a year of having it. I started to get the warning that this drive was going to fail probably about 7 months after buying it. I feel like I have been ripped off for the price I bought it at on Jan 2010 but oh well what can you do. I just suggest that others go a different route. Thanks

Installed it with ease. Went from 60 gig to 500gig. There is a 12 minute video by Game Gear that gives you a step by step intructions that even includes how to back up and restore your existing info on your ps3. The old hard drive is a Seagate is a Momentus , so I feel more comfortable with an OEM swap. Amazon has the best price for a 500gb drive. Also, the same speed (5400 rpm) is recommended for replacement on the ps3.

This hard drive is plagued with issues. It has buggy firmware, that seagate updates every once in a while FAILING to resolve the issues with the drive. STAY AWAY

If you're looking to replace your ps3 hdd, then I recommend this one. It's 500 gb, which is more than enough for your ps3, it's compatible, and it fit just like the original ps3's. The only hard thing about hdd replacing is removing the screws and such, trust me when I say the ONLY way to do it is via pliers. I bought this to replace the failing hard drive in my 4.5 year old Apple 2.17GHz Core Duo 17" MacBook Pro which originally was built to order with a 120GB 5400RPM hard drive.The original hard drive I discovered upon it's removal was also a Seagate Momentus drive. I purchased this to upgrade my playstation 3 HDD from 120gb to 500gb because I download alot games & rip my blu ray & dvd library to my playstation 3 HDD ... Now I have over 350 downloaded to my playstation 3 HDD & I love it instead of getting up getting a blu ray, putting in the disc & waiting to load. I can browse and watch a movies in seconds, A must have for playstation 3 owner who want to get maxium use out there systems !!

I was looking foward to upgrade my PS3 hard drive (80G) and I found that the 500G drives were getting popular,the two choices I found were the Seagate Momentus and the Western Digital Scorpio Blue. The WD is a bit cheaper, and was the one with the most reviews, but I heard the Seagate is more reliable (3 yrs warranty for the WD VS 5 yrs for the Seagate). So I chose my destiny and bought the Seagate. This is the first time I buy a hard drive and install it myself, but the process is fairly simple and quick, I just had to follow the instructions I found on the web (back up your save files, power off, remove the cover, the blue screw, pull out the old drive, remove the 4 screws from the drive frame, and install the new one in reverse order).The problem was wen I tried to power up, the PS3 didn't recognize the new drive, and instructed me to insert a flash drive with the sistem files. So I downloaded them from the Playstation website and saved them on to the flash drive (in the ps3 folder I created, according to the printed instructions that came with the ps3 unit) and voila!, the hard drive could be formatted, and I begun to recover my files I backed up.Several reviews mention that this model is incompatible with the ps3, perhaps it is because the people who wrote them encountered the same problem as I, and didn't have the ps3 sistem files ready in the flash unit. I don't know if this problem occurs with the WD drive, but I think is not much trouble at all to fix it. A word of advice I found at the web is that the drive you choose has to operate at 5400 RPM, because there are faster (and more expensive) drives that use 7200 RPM, like the Seagate Barracuda or the WD Scorpio black, but it is rumored that they could be not compatible with the ps3, this could be wrong though.I have not found problems so far (installed it on oct 04), loading time is very fast, it is quiet, and most of all, BIG space, no more worries!

I gave this two stars because it failed well within warranty. Failing within warranty was a real pleasant surprise. Maybe it would have been okay in a glass box anchored firmly to a concrete foundation. Mechanical drives are almost universally short lived with laptops and the old school storage industry has never really developed a good solution.

I am not going to say there is something wrong with these drives, because at the end of the day I'm only one guy with a bad experience. I'll just offer my review here so that people get a full perspective. I have had two of these fail on me in a row (actually, the non G-sensing version, but they are otherwise exactly the same drive). Both failed offline SMART tests, so they have truly gone bad. When they were working, the drives were very fast and quiet, though, so I can certainly understand the high marks people give these drives when they first get them. However, after a month or so, the drives would start to have problems.I think it is fair to say that Seagate is really running these at the ragged edge of what is possible. While the transfer rates can approach 90 Mb/s at the edge of the platter--according to a few quick tests I ran--the transfer rate fluctuates greatly, and the SMART data shows a pretty constant stream of software-corrected (ECC) errors. In other words, you're not losing data, but the data coming off the drive is on the border of what is readable, such that the drive needs to rely on error correction and/or rereads (hence the fluctuating speeds) to get the data off. I base these conclusions on the fact that tests of data on the inside of the platter (which has much less speed) are much more reliable (albeit slower).If you do decide to get one of these, do yourself a favor and backup (which you should do anyways, because all hard drives are subject to fail at any time). Though if you REALLY want to do yourself a favor. Choose another brand.

Bought from Amazon, received it problem free.Recently installed this disk into my 15" MBP I7. Recent so I can't say much about reliability but so far so good. Installed effortlessly. Can't hear it unless I put my ear to the laptop and even then I'm not sure that I hear it.As for speed I can only compare it to my old 5400 rpm disk and it seems to boot quicker and access from a FW800 external disk is simply awesome.Have used momentus before with my old 13" macbook and used it hard for almost 5 years without a hitch so if this has the same build quality then I can do nothing else but recommend it highly. Only rated with 4 stars because like beforementioned I still havn't had it for long.

My Macbook originally came with an 80GB Seagate Momentus hard drive which I wanted to upgrade and I wanted to stay in the same family of drives. This 500GB Seagate was the perfect fit and a great price too. It's only been up and running for 2 hours but so far so good!

I have Toshiba laptop that I got in 2006. It had only 80 GB HDD. In 2010, I decided to increase it.I got this Seagate HDD which was simple to place in and lo, my computer had a 500 GB space.I could use my previous one as an external Hard Drive once I get a case and a Sata to USB cableI loved the Seagate Hard Drive. It is 7200 rpm, which makes it faster than my previous 5400 rpm Fujitsu hard drive.I have been using it for a a week. It runs smooth, no issues.

I was skepticle at first due to some of the negative reviews on this product, but I have had this running for 72hrs as of this writting with no problems. Easy to install in my HP Pavillion DV5000. Runs quiet. Good so far. I will update if it dies.

I upgraded my Sony Vaio with two 160gb hard drives from Seagate to Seagate Momentus SATA 2.5" two 500gb. Installation was very easy and straight forward. I purchased two and placed the operating system on the first drive and all documents on the second drive. The logic on this was to protect my data in the event of a hard drive failure. I figured, what are the odds that both hard drives would fail? However, to my great disappointment, both drives failed within one year of purchase. Original purchase date of May 3, 2009 and they both failed on July 26, 2010. I contacted Seagate Warranty service and replacement drives are on the way. However, they will replace with the same original drive...which I disagree with as since both failed at the same time I would think that they would want to let you upgrade to a different model. Perhaps others have better luck than I.

Disclaimer: This explains the reason for 3 stars. I bought this for my mid-2009 MacBook Pro and after lots of trial and error, talking with Applecare and Seagate support, I was unable to get the drive to work with that computer. At the same time my buddy who recommended it had no problems with it in his 2008 MacBook (i.e. non-Pro model). My research on the web shows that the firmware in the MacBook Pro is incompatible with the drive. That said, I can't give this drive a fair review.

The fastest/largest internal drive for macbook pro's on the market today (Jan 2011), so far works great on my macbook pro (late 2008)! My first Seagate, usually have used to the WD scorpio drives that where also pretty good. Worth getting

Purchased the drive brand new for my Dell laptop. Within one month the drive began "clicking" intermittently, each time causing my machine to completely lock up and freeze while it happened. At first I thought the problem would go away, but it progressively got worse and worse until I finally had to return the drive.RMA is not free - you need to either pay for them to mail you a box and a shipping label, or pack it yourself. Next to impossible to pack yourself - they have extremely strict requirements about the amount and type of foam required, which can't be purchased at shipping stores. In other words, you are forced to pay Seagate for a replacement drive.Received a new replacement and within 2-3 weeks the new drive started having the same issue. Returned that one as well and received a green label "refurbished" drive. The refurbished drive was constantly clicking right out of the box - I was shipped a defective drive. "Refurbished" basically means they tried to find the problem someone else had, couldn't, and shipped that problem drive out to me.I'm not impressed. Not only am I out the cost of the drive, I'm also out the amount I spent for the "advanced replacement" process.Like many of you, I read the reviews on Amazon and figured that maybe all of the bad reviews were because of the number of drives Seagate sells and only the bad people complaining. Boy was I wrong - these drives are complete lemons. Beware - don't make the same mistake I did!

Swapped out my 60GB for this 500GB and everything is exactly the same except the enormous extra space.My PS3 will never run out of space again and the price was very reasonable. Only gripe was the lame packaging, the hard drive was floating in a roughly 6x9 box with one air bubble. When the mailman handed me the box I heard and felt the item banging around but everything works fine.

OK folks,I thought It would be a great idea to change out my 80 GB hard drive for a much bigger - bigger one the 500 GB one Seagate ST9500420AS Momentus 7200.4 SATA 3Gb/s 500 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive. I followed all the instructions on the playstation website. It worked fine. However I have advice for the hardcore folks with extra money. First off the folks at Sony I am sure have tested different sizes of hard drives. I highly recommend that you do not upgrade above the largest one that ships with the new playstation machines. Why? Well the system really bogs down when you load that hard drive with hundreds upon hundreds of GB's of stuff. Photos, music, game saves, games, and anything else that will go on the thing. Plus you will need a way to backup your precious data. Items bought off the Playstation Network. Movies, videos, etc.However if you do decide to go with this hard drive it does work fine. I highly recommend that you buy yourself a USB 500 GB external hard drive Seagate 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive ST905004EXA101-RK (Black)for exclusive use of backing up the PS3 and copying stuff that it allows you to copy. You will need to delete the partition that it comes with and re-partition it with the FAT32 standard. I have tried several, and I mean several different methods of attempting to change the USB drive to any partition above 32 GB. The only software I found to work is from Paragon called Paragon Partition Manager. You will need to purchase it since the demo version does not allow you to delete a partition. This software is the very best so far and does not cost that much. $40.

I got this drive to upgrade my 60gb PS3. It was very easy to install and it has been working in great condition for the last three days. Very quiet and fast not counting the space. The difference between 7200 rpm and 5400 it's not monumental but more speed can't hurt. My personal experience with both WD and Seagate has been nothing less than excellent but looking at other reviews makes me think that is just luck. I will update my review if i have any problems with the drive in the upcoming months. For the price you can't go wrong WD or Seagate will do the job.

I bought this hard drive through Amazon to replace a dying one on my laptop. Installation was simple. It is quieter than the laptop's fan and it is fast. This hard drive rates 5.9 for 'disk data transfer rate' on the Windows Experience Index. I highly recommend it. No problems of any sort.

I bought this drive to replace the one that came with my netbook.I have been using it for three weeks so far, and it seems to be okay.The only thing i noticed is that it gets very hot when i play a game with the netbook in the hard drive area which is above my left palm! it used not to get that hot with the original drive (but the original drive is 160GB only so i can't really compare apple to apple here).I don't really mind it getting hot but sometimes it gets really hot that i actually blow some air on my hand to cool it and cool the palm rest on the netbook!If you get annoyed by heat, i suggest you spend extra bucks for a better one of same size. but if you care about saving some $$ or if you are not going to use a hard disc crunching software like gaming or video editting, then this hard drive is for you.

THE ST9500420ASG HAS DEFECTIVE FIRMWARE.This is well documented online if you search for this model number and clicking noise, e.g. on Seagate's own forums. In some cases, you can update the firmware to ameliorate the problem.I note a few folks mention constant clicking. That's not something to be ignored. If you've got that clicking, your hard drive's _DETAILED_ SMART stats will probably show that the drive is in very bad shape. Check the Load_Cycle_Count; on my drives, this is approaching half a million cycles.Also, there is NO WARRANTY if you get the OEM version. Seagate refuses to honor the warranty on these drives, even though their web site says their OEM drives have a 3 year warranty.(Sorry, Amazon doesn't allow URLs in reviews, so I can't post links.)

My CEO had a Dell Laptop with Vista that had trouble loading some necessary proprietary office software that would not run on VistaRemoved old hard drive, installed this one and formatted with XPAll worked well and XP is very fast on this laptopI did my research ahead of time. This is the same HD that came with her Dell Computer but still I had to adjust the bios to read this drive

I was a bit skeptical buying on open box item. However, the price was right and the warranty was good. The drive was received in great condition. The bag was opened but not a single issue has been found with this drive. It works great and is exactly what I was looking for.

I picked this up for my late 2007 MacBook Pro, hoping not only for more storage, but for a small speed bump from the 5400 RPM drive the computer shipped with.Well... I got more space. I was a bit disappointed in the performance, though. If I didn't see the sticker on the drive, I'd swear it was a 5400. The performance is pretty much the same, and I'm not getting hit on battery life.If you're just looking for a replacement drive, I don't think you can really go wrong with Seagate or Western Digital. If you're deciding between the two, I'd go with whatever's cheaper. This is probably the most mediocre drive I've bought in the past five years.

Excellent seller. Hard drives came very fast. Although, I asked to return the HD's because after I ordered them I asked the seller about the warranty. The seller responded that they are OEM which was easy to over look. It was stated OEM in the Amazon search results that list different companies for this specific Hard drive (which I noticed after the sellers response) but it was not stated when I clicked on the actual item or store to buy it. Actually nothing was mention in the description about the warranty so I assumed there was a 3 year manufacture warranty.Beware that OEM doesn't carry in this case the Seagate 3 year warranty. Actually Seagate said there is no manufacturer warranty at all on OEM Hard drives. The seller does give 1 year.The HD's were shipped in a yellow bubble padded envelope. When the PO put it in my mail slot it had to drop 3 feet to the ground. Not good. A box with padding should have been used when mailing Hard Drives. I would have also asked to returned it because of the way it was shipped.Other then that the seller answered all my questions & concerns promptly and only wanted to please me, and for this reason, I would definitely buy from this seller but ask questions before I buy if the opportunity comes around.

I bought this notebook (int) hard drive only to be a good store to use it on my laptop. I dint even mind the noise but atleast expected it to work for sometime....it just didnt work beyond 2 months. Initially it did work at a speed of 5400 rpm but things lost out of gear with the failure in recognition of the device and then it just came to a grinding halt. With the promises of 'shockproof' feature, I thought it was a good one for my everyday use. Am still on the hunt for a good one.

If you own a laptop that is not operating up to your wishes, and you've already loaded up with RAM and defragmentated the hard drive, chances are that the performance deficit you are experiencing is simply the limitations of a 5400rpm drive, undoubtedly the type that came with your system. An easy (and now, inexpensive) way to significantly boost the speed of the system is simply to replace your 5400rpm drive with a faster, 7200rpm model. This used to be an expensive proposition, but now has become exceptionally affordable.This particular Seagate model is especially good for upgrading an existing laptop for a number of reasons. First, as mentioned above, this is a 7200rpm drive, which all by itself offers a significant performance boost over the standard 5400rpm versions used in most all stock laptops. Second, the drive is a SATA 3.0Gb model, which means that the theoretical upper threshold for data transfer is exceptionally high (although in real life these values are almost never achieved). In addition, this particular model employs native command queuing, a hardware based performance feature which is not found on all such drives.At about $60, this is one of the most effective and inexpensive ways to boost a laptop's overall performance. Don't expect miracles, but depending on the drive you are replacing, you may see quite a change in system responsiveness, particularly in disk intensive operations. The easiest way to perform the change is to use a disk imaging program to save a "snapshot" of the entire disk, remove the old disk , install the new drive, and then copy the saved image back to the new drive. It's a nice upgrade for my laptop's hard drive. It was getting filled up.You will need to buy some kind of USB to SATA adapter to use the Seagate utility to clone your HDD fromthe internal drive to the new drive. It will take hours due to the large amount of data but there'snothing you can do about it.Most of the "scary" part is taking the laptop apart enough to swap drives.

Nothing much to say... After 10 months of normal use in laptop, the drive is dead. This is the only drive that stopped without any warning. Make sure you have backups.

I recently got a Dell Latitude E6400 that uses this drive. It's mostly a quiet drive until it tries to read from a certain section, then it clicks like it's about to fail. If I got a bad drive, I'd just get a failure code and have it replaced. Only problem is, the drive comes back as good and there are no adverse affects on windows that would normally occur if the drive was about to die (blue screens, lock ups, computer seizing up momentarily every now and then). At first, I didn't believe the Dell diagnostics so I downloaded a different utility directly from Seagate and ran the longest test available. The drive test encountered the clicking section but still reported everything good.This leads me to give this drive 2 stars because only 1 of 2 possibilites is true. Either this is just the way the drive sounds which is very annoying or their drive tests are worthless which therefore makes it next to impossible to get warranty support.

I bought this to upgrade my PS3 hard drive(40 GB). I looked all over the web. How to videos, price comparing, quality, etc. and this is what I found. The removal and installation took less than 10 minutes and that is including removal from shipping packaging. So much easier than I thought it was going to be because I have never messed with a hard drive before. I didn't have very much to back up so I saved what I could on a usb flash drive. (If you have alot you want to move to new hard drive you will need more than 8 GB storage device.) It takes longer to do the formatting and installation of PS3 hardware. After all that it showed my free space to be 412 GB / 465 GB. Not going to complain about that at all!
