They would mount every second or third attempt but rarely complete a back up. Once the sounds started (see title) then I knew the drive had thrown in the towel. I will not trust these. I'm okay with other styles of Lacie drives and have a 5T RAID on both my workstations which work flawlessly but these big Quadra disks are duds.

The short USB cord is ideal for those who have ultra portable in mind when acquiring these types of devices. I would buy again/recommend to a friend.

I would love to give this a better rating. But this is the best I can do.Bought this LaCie less than 1.5 years ago. Set it up, plugged it in, and worked just fine on my Mac. It was used as a backup drive and a place to store larger files. And everything worked well for 1.5 years.About 5 weeks ago, my internal HD was showing an imminent failure, so I switched over to the LaCie until a replacement was obtained. In the meantime, life occurred, and it took me four weeks to get a replacement. Got the replacement on a Thursday, but when I went to replace the internal drive on Friday, the LaCie decided it no longer wanted to cooperate. The blue light came on, some disk sounds for a few seconds, but nothing else happens.Both the local LaCie dealer and LaCie HQ agree it's the power supply (Warning: Power supply problems are not an isolated occurrance with these LaCies). So hopefully I haven't lost anything except some time and patience. And they have agreed to send me a new power supply, under warranty. However, neither the local dealer or LaCie HQ have the power supply in stock. There's a minimum of 2-4 weeks wait. And since I'm currently out of country, shipping is at my expense.If you currently have this drive or similar, buy yourself a backup power supply. Do it now. The sanity you save might be your own.~~~~~ Updated review, October 9, 2009 ~~~~~Obtained a new power supply from LaCie, plugged it in and hoped for the best. And it worked. For about 6 weeks. A different problem, and LaCie again sent me another power supply. AND, I bought another power supply as a backup. (Numbers 3 and 4) But alas, it was not meant to be this time. Power supplies #3 and #4 gave me the same results as the ill-fated power supply #2. So that likely means that it's the internal electronics in the drive enclosure itself. It's likely not the power supplies. To further save my sanity, I'll likely pull the drive from this enclosure and install it in another.If I could, I'd change the review to a one. But it seems I'm stuck with two stars too.

I have been a user of LaCie extenal hard drives for a few years. I have not had any issues with my prior purchases. The install is basically plug and play. The 2TB unit I recently purchased was simple to install. My issue with it is - the fan. It is loud and annoying. I wrote to the company and they did offer me to send it back to them and repair it. I am hesitant on doing so as I have already loaded it up with the info that it is intended for. So as for their customer response, I have to say that they did listen and offer me the opportunity to return the unit. I do not have any other means of backing up all the info, so I most likely will not send it back. Other than that, I have had no problems with drive. It is just loud and annoying.

I'll be brief on this. I bought a 2D Quadra 1T over the holiday to bolster my existing back-up systems. Two months later, this new hard disk failed. Two issues for perspective customers:1) Some Mac users are finding mount problems with LaCie products. I recommend doing your research on OS compatibility prior to purchasing. Although the company provides a level of operating system flexibility between OS-X and Windows, blogs on the user boards shed light on the real issues.2) The "3-Year Limited Warranty For Hardware" should be reviewed prior to purchase. It does not include to/from shipping charges of the defective product. It includes 'discretionary' language that allows LaCie to replace new but defective products with refurbished parts. LaCie also has a $50 'advanced care option' for shipping & expedited service. This might provide value to those needing immediate replacement but otherwise is not a value-add feature for the price.Don't get me wrong, I do like LaCie products for their ease of set up and use. The physical ergonomics of the D2Q meets my needs as well. I am just disappointed that this company lacks the full responsibility of their product's reliability (both on the hardware and software side)

Update to my review (Feb 8, 2011).... After reading several other posts about faulty LaCie power supplies on other websites, I decided to take a risk and purchase a new power supply. For me, at least, this fixed the problem with both drives (500GB and 1TB). As the power supplies seem to be the root causes of the problem, I've made these LaCie drives backups to my backup drives. That is, I plug them in long enough to make a second backup of my data and then unplug and put them into storage. This will hopefully prolong the life of the power supplies and avoid the necessity to replace them on a yearly basis. I still stick to my 0 to 1 star rating as no one should have to replace the power supplies every year. So, the latest status is...80GB FA Porsche - Almost 4 years and working fine250GB San Hecht - 2+ years and working fine500GB Big Disk Extreme - Working again with new power supply1T Big Disk Extreme - Working again with new power supply(July 24, 2009)I have 4 LaCie drives..80GB FA Porsche - 2+ years and working fine250GB San Hecht - 1+ years and working fine500GB Big Disk Extreme - Dead in less than 1 year1T Big Disk Extreme - Dying as I write this (less than 1 year of use)The first drive I bought was the 80GB which has been working fine for almost 3 years. Based on the success with this, I purchased the 500GB drive which, after less than 1 year, started to dismount on its own. After another few weeks, it wouldn't mount at all - just the click, click, click and rapid flashing light indicating the loss of all my backup data.Not having time to diagnose the problem, I quickly purchased the 1T to re-back up my data ASAP. It's less than 1 year old and the drive started dismounting on its own last week. This time, I know what's coming. I will be purchasing another 1T+ backup drive that DOES NOT have the name LaCie stamped into it. That was my last Lacie product.

I've been playing with this drive since I got in the last few hours.Out of the box, first thing that caught my attention was the look of the drive. The picture in Lacie's website and elsewhere are good to show the drive in bright color. But the Aluminum enclosure is just 'dull'. That too, the face of the drive is too think and heavy - can't they carve out like Apple ? Overall the drive is very heavy. Equally the indicator button is too big and bright.That said, I bought this drive mainly for the ports. Lacie provided cable for each of the ports, nice !I pull the drive out, connected to my MacBook Pro, nice setup screen for Mac - full OS-X partition option or OS-X + Windows option. In less than 1 minute, drives were mount on the 'finder'. I've been transferring data from another external drive, for the last few hours. Very little sound during transfer.Setting up the the stand to this drive is a different but very cool experience - new idea, to fix a stand. Overall I'm happy with the drive. Another good thing I noted and confirmed with Lacie support is this is a 240V compatible, for me to take it to Asia and/or Europe.

I'm working with small files, typically in the 1 Gig size range and they read/write very quickly. So far they've been reliable. The only complaints, and it's minor, is that they're a tiny bit noisy and the power cords are (oddly) different lengths for each unit.

NOTE: The product is fine, it's the shipping by Amazon that was a complete failure. Sent the first one back - who ships a hard-drive in a baggy? The replacement was in a same packaging. In this case, I actually contacted the executive customer service - a representative "promised" they will be improving their shipping approach for things such as HDDs. We'll see. Have not really used the replacement drive, but have heard good things about it.

The set-up is very easy by following the instruction manual and re-formatting it with Windows Disk Management is also straight-forward.The noise level is noticeable but not bad. I don't understand why people are complaining about the noise level being loud. I can live with it as long as the drive is reliable (which is seems to be).Set-up for RAID 1 is very easy, just follow the instruction manual.

This is the 3rd LaCie external hard drive I own, (along with a Western Digital and three of lesser brands- one 320G and 3 500G.)LaCie remains my first choice by far. The compatibility with my Mac is unquestionable - and there's not even any extra PC software/capabilities for me to just shelve, or to present the sense that the Mac compatibility is some sort of "workaround"/was not built for my purposes.The speed is great even on Firewire 400 - good enough to capably capture and play video. It's quiet and light (though I don't carry it around, but do need to move it occasionally.) It even comes with cables for all 4 interfaces it offers.I'm thrilled to finally have the storage capabilities of a 1tb external; and one that I can hook up to both my computer interfaces, or one of my near future. And given my 6 year positive experience with LaCie's non-failures, I'm beginning to properly take advantage of that storage space/starting to get over the fear engendered by 2 other external hard drive brands which have died a sudden death after 1 to 3 years. I'm getting rid of the constantly looming thought to have to immediately back that stuff up too, or needing to weigh what I put on the drive against it's possible sudden loss.

I bought this external hard drive thru Amazon from Technology Galaxy. I read many reviews and Tech specs before I bought. But I learned very hard way that 4TB external hard drive is not compatible with Window Xp. I spen many days and expences to find this out and I had to return it. Thanks to Techology Galaxy that I had to pay return shipping cost and high restocking charges. Nowhere in the Amazons explanation of this product that I had to pay restocking charges. Bewrae of Technology Galaxy-it is very hard to deal with them and also very expensive.

I just purchased my new external hard drive couple days ago at a Mac Store, and after reading other peoples reviews online at Amazon, I would honestly say this is a good piece of equipment. The price between Amazon, and the Mac Store price was about $14 difference, that was all. The only downside to this is, the fact it is a bit pricey for what I paid for this, but it has a three year warranty,from the date of my first purchase. It is very quiet, and I have no troubles backing up my photos, and my music. It is automatically set to back up everything every hour, and it is wonderful. I have not had any problems as of yet, and I guess the name LaCie stands behind their word, as far as durability, and ease of use. I will however continue to shop at Amazon for other items, as I am happy with their quick and reliable service.

When my 200GB WD Firewire external drive gave up the ghost, I needed to find a reasonably-priced, dependable, and fast replacement for it. The important thing, for me, was that I needed a drive with Firewire connection -- not USB2. We used to purchased LaCie drives at the last place I was employed at, and they were always dependable -- so name recognition, reputation, and price drove me to make this purchase.Installation was a breeze on my Mac Pro G5. I had it up and running in no time! It is currently being used for archiving and asset organization and, because of the speed of data transer via the Firewire, I am also using it to edit videos directly on the drive.I am very pleased with this product and would recommend it to others.

I also didn't want to go with a Drobo because A) it's a lot of money to spend and to have to buy additional drives, and B) there's still a risk of single point failure in the Drobo itself. In the end, I went with LaCie because of what I perceived as a reputation for better boxes with more reliable drives, spent the premium, crossed my fingers, kept the packaging, and hoped for the best.Four months later, I've exhaled and tossed the packaging. The drive is sturdy, rock solid, plays well with my computers, and is actually not as loud as some reviews I've read seem to suggest!

I bought this hard drive to back up my laptop (HP with Windows 7) and to store recorded audio data. I've only used it a couple of times, but I have no complaints. It's fast, quiet, and does its job. I can't comment on the reliability since I bought it so recently.Be careful if you are comparing this drive to the LaCie Hard Disk Quadra. There are no detailed specifications for the Hard Disk Quadra online. I emailed the LaCie tech support to find that it's a significantly slower drive than the D2 Quadra.

I bought a 6GB LaCie 1 year ago. Recently it stopped functioning. From what I can tell the RAID HW failed as the big light in the front is RED and non of the drive lights in the back come on at all.LaCie support is very poor. I'm pretty much out in the cold with no drive and no data.I made it clear that the drives appear to be fine and their solution was to send me to a data recovery house that pulls data off of bad drives for $1,000s. A fools errand if your drives are fine and you just have bad LaCie RAID HW.All I need is a new enclosure (RAID HW), but they dont consider that to be an option. Considering the enclosure (RAID HW) is the only value LaCie provides to the product and it is what failed I'm obviously not a very happy customer.Hey, they did send me a new power brick! Unfortunatley, that wasn't the problem...I will say the drive worked fine for 12 months. So, if you only need your data safe for 12 months I highly recomend this product.
