Awesome storage device. I use two units to back up my laptop. At $59.00 this is a great deal and great insurance. Aluminum case is very sturdy. Item comes with a short USB cable. You do not ever want to loose pictures, music, etc. you have on your computer.

I am a Photographer, and i need reliable fast external hard disk space. I have settled on LaCie drives using Firewire 800 after trying many other choices. I use two 1 TB drives for my photograph database. I put everything on the first drive, and then mirror that on the second drive. And then burn backups on DVD. And then upload to my Zenfolio hosted web site, [...]. Zenfolio makes a backup copy of all my uploads. My experience with using USB hubs has been spotty. I got several chances to use my backups when drives failed on USB hubs. I use high quality Firewire cables and daisy chain the drives on my MacBook Pro. I also discovered that on Mac OS X, i must actually turn on Journaling. Even though I formatted the new drives with HFS+ with Journaling, Journaling needs to be turned on. For those who are asking "What is Journaling?" Journaling keeps a log of all disk Writes, and backs out any incomplete operations, after a system crash interrupts the system. This is a very good thing! David

This is possibly one of the most disappointing things that's happened to me. I'm a photographer, and stupidly I did not back the photos up to another drive, thinking that Lacie made reliable products. Never buying anything from this company, EVER again.

The bulky 3.0/2.0 universal cable is so loose that its very hard to connect to the computer/TV etc! There is a very high chance that you will loose your data due to corrupt signal.Not only this product but all portable HD that have the universal cable have this problem.These harddrives are highly unreliable. Please dont buy this.Highly NOT recommended.

Having read some very disappointing reviews of other external drives, I decided to order two of these as backup for my digital images and music. This was an excellent choice. Both drives arrived more quickly than promised; were packed well and arrived in great condition; both drives contained all cables, power supply and instructions for a quick and easy installation; software is preloaded on the drives; compatible with both Mac (which I have) and Windows; the drives formatted quickly and accurately; both run cool and very quietly; quickly mount on the desktop when powered up; file transfer speed is impressive; compatible with Firewire 400, 800, USB and eSATA.; large capacity should be useful for a long time.These drives are not inexpensive....but why would anyone chance losing valuable data on a cheaper (perhaps) inferior product. I would purchase this brand/product again in a heartbeat....they appear to be built to deliver optimum service for a very long time.

I like the product. It is a great size and easy to use. However, the instructions are minimal and I wasn't positive I was doing it correctly so had a trainer from Apple work with me.

67 GB transfered in a half hour! Heck yeah...except not.The drive looks really nice. It has all the interfaces. It has a great amount of storage space and it doesn't come preformatted (this is a BIG time saver).The only thing is, it's unreliable/slow and I wish I would have take the reviews on here to heart.That's half hour 67GB transfer? It's now at 2 hours and dropping...now it's at 2 hours and 45 minutes transferring at 8.5MB/s on Firewire. This is on a fresh drive with 150GB free (I did my initial backup, and am now putting more files on it). Lovely...I think my best bet next time is to buy an external drive enclosure and buy a drive that has TYPICAL SUSTAINED TRANSFER RATES spec'd out. None of this "up to 35MB/s" garbage. My Western Digital Home edition drives (which they seemingly no longer make) sustain at around 25-30MB/s. I thought the Lacie drive would have no problem going at that rate since it says "PROFESSIONAL HARD DISK". How wrong I was.Now it's down to 7.5MB/s transfer. This really is unacceptable. Sometimes the hard drive wouldn't even detect...the Lacie button software is a joke except for the formatting option during the initial setup. This thing may be sent back, what a pain.

I do alot of graphics design and I needed an eSata drive that would make video and graphic transfers from my notebook much faster. I have a ton of USB peripherals on this machine and my LaCie drive has been the easiest and most reliable install to date.It's faster than anything else I've tried and I love the easy setup.No complaints at all.In fact, I liked it so much, I bought a second one for my company.I highly recommend it.

We own five USB portable hard drives and the LaCie is the best for us. Two of the drives are USB 3.0 drives but the LaCie seems to work on all of our computers including Mac. The Dane-elec USB 3.0 drives work fine for PCs but on the Mac will not allow us to write to the drive.The form factor is excellent and the hard shell makes it much preferable to the Passport drives.The connector type on this drive uses a very low and wide profile connector therefore if you lose the cable it is going to be a pain to replace it.Regardless this is an excellent drive for the price.

This is my third Lacie drive and I recently ordered two more. I have been buying Lacie drives for about five years now, I continue to buy them because so far I have never had a problem with any of them. But let me state now that I always power the drives down when they are not in use which is by far most of the time, I can't speak for how long they would last if they were constantly spinning. The drives are easy to daisy chain if you need that, but for me the connection flexibility is key. I have Macbooks and use the Firewire most of the time but I can switch to USB2.0 if I need to have several connected at once. During certain projects I have ran the drives for a week or more at a time and they never get hot, at most they may get slightly warm to the touch with the back of the hand so heat build up is not a problem.I have yet to find a use for their software so I can't speak to that.I don't know why but their drives do seem to cost a bit more than other makes, but if they continue to work I wont complain over spending an extra $20 or so.

Look at those pictures (or the ones on the LaCie website). See how the drive looks to be exactly the thickness of a USB connector? Maybe the 500GB is, but the 1TB model is much thicker. Like 40% thicker. If you're looking for a svelte portable drive, keep looking. This one is thick and has sharp edges that just promise to tear up the insides of whatever bag you drop it into.

I was happy how quickly the hard drive arrived - that is the 1 star rating. It was a gift for Christmas so didn't get opened until after the holiday. Right out of the box the product did NOT work. LaCie was contacted and a new power supply sent as this could be the issue. No so. The hard drive is still NOT functioning. Now comes the long process of contacting Amazon since it was purchased here and not from LaCie and setting up the return/exchange.

I was happy how quickly the hard drive arrived - that is the 1 star rating. It was a gift for Christmas so didn't get opened until after the holiday. Right out of the box the product did NOT work. LaCie was contacted and a new power supply sent as this could be the issue. No so. The hard drive is still NOT functioning. Now comes the long process of contacting Amazon since it was purchased here and not from LaCie and setting up the return/exchange.

I got this hard drive a few weeks ago due to its compact size and decent capacity 640GB.Unfortunately anfter 2 days of receiving the HD it stopped working, I tried running different tools to ressucitate the hard drive and/or format it again. It was dead, no way to fix it.Called customer service at LaCie and they were not helpful after explining my problem they only cared about asking me for receipts paperwork etc they wanted to charge me $15 for an answer on their faulty device.Could not make it work. Try to avoid LaCie if you can. I have a WD Passport and is giving me no problems.

I received this 1.5TB Lacie drive this week and installed it on my system which is a Win7 Pro 64 Bit with a ASUS P6X58D Premium motherboard and i-Core 7/930 CPU. I chose the Firewire connection as it looked like it would be the fastest. Drive was found and proceded to do a Win7 backup. Twenty four hours later it still was not done. I than did some checking and found you needed to install a legacy Firewire driver. I did then than ran a simple drag and drop copy of a folder with 18GB. Sustained copy rate for the new Firewire connection was no more than 9 MB/sec. I switched over to a standard USB 2.0 port and the same drag and drop transfer rate went to 20-25 MB/sec. Another issue is that unless you buy the $69 upgraded version of their Genie backup software, there is not backup SW included that is Win7, 64bit compliant. I get the impression that Lacie though well made might not be up to date on the technology side (more issues with type of eSATA connection it will accept too). For now it works fine but it was disappointing to uncover these issues.

So far I have purchased roughly 12 of these drives and not one has given me a single problem. I have every employee in my office backing up their laptops to one of these drives and not one has failed on me. The only problem I've had with this drive was attempting to use it to back up my PS3. Apparently they just aren't compatible, not sure why. ANyway I highly recommend this drive.
