I got my hard drive faster than I thought I would since I had ordered it on black Friday night. I haven't used the product that much other than to perform a complete back on my laptop but the software that comes with it is very detailed yet easy to use.

This is a newer version of an earlier model that is very similar (LaCie 301827U d2 Quadra 1 TB eSATA/FireWire800/FireWire400/USB 2.0 External Hard Disk). I talked to a salesman at J&R Computers and he told me the only difference is that this model has 32MB cache and the older model has 16MB cache. The older model has over 100 reviews so you may want to look there as well.COST:This costs more than some other external hard drives of the same capacity but there are good reasons: You are paying for the multiple interfaces (eSATA, Firewire 400, Firewire 800 with second daisy-chain port, USB 2.0) and the complete set of cables that come with it. The eSATA support is 3Gbits compared to 1.5Gbits for less expensive drives. The well-constructed case may also add some cost. I'd like to think that the included disk is of a higher quality too, but have no way to judge.PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS:The drive has been working fine for about a month now.It feels VERY sturdy. It is heavier than other external drives I am familiar with.It is only slightly warm to the touch when running. The all-metal construction with the exterior ridges seems to do a good job of keeping it cool.It is VERY quiet. If not for the blue light I couldn't tell that it was turned on. Even when I put my ear right next to it I can hear very little. Even when it is actively seeking it is basically silent. There is no fan.It does make a few noises when starting up or shutting down. I THINK one of the noises I hear is the heads parking and unparking.I am using it as a USB 2.0 device right now. I have an eSATA card on order and will update this review to let you know how that goes. UPDATE: The drive works just fine when connected via eSATA. I have not done any performance experiments. It does have a slot in the back for one of those Kensington cable locks. I didn't see this mentioned in the sales literature, although other external drive manufacturers make a big deal of it. There are a lot of those locks available, especially if you consider the clones. The following is probably the best: Kensington 64343 MicroSaver DS Notebook Computer Lock with Keys (PC/Mac).Oh, yes, one more thing. The blue light reminds me of HAL in 2001 Space Odyssey, except that HAL had a red eye.UPDATE 15 Sep 2010:There are a number of reviews mentioning power supply failures, and I don't want to deny that there is a problem here. I do want to point out that I have had mine for 22-23 months now and it is still running strong. My setup includes an APC BACK-UPS RS BR1500LCD 1500VA/865W UPS System and both the LaCie and its power supply sit out in the open so get plenty of air circulation. My usage is for daily backup via the eSATA interface, so although it is powered on 24/7/365 it only gets about an hour (probably less) of active use each day.

The first thing that noticed in my LaCie 1.5TB quadra hard disk is its USB 1.1 compatibility because my older system is not obsolete and is working fine. It has four interfaces -eSATA, Firewire 800 and 400 and USB 2. It is also compatible with both Mac and PCs. The d2 is a good buy because it helps in daisy-chaining multiple drives. I boot this hard drive with the eSATA interface and was happy with the way it worked, until six months after which the problems began. The file transfer rate was good initially but the time taken kept increasing every other day now. While I was able to transfer a 5 GB file in 6 mins approx at the beginning after 7 months the time frame went up to 13 mins. Is it a sign that my d2 will fail? Keeping my fingers crossed. The machine rattles too. I don't get answers to my e-mail queries and when I do, I would have resolved it through some repair.

I have purchased three LaCie products. Two external hard drives a 500GB and a 250GB and an external dvd Light Scribe burner. The dvd burner still works. Both hard drives quit working after one year. When they worked they were fine but they both died without warning and are unrepairable. I lost everything. Buyer be ware, no hard drive is safe. Back up your back up and rotate the back ups often.

This LaCie drive is everything they say it is by the manufacturer. If you are using a Mac then read the instructions carefully. It needs to be reformatted for use with a Mac. I use it with Time Machine on my iMac. I recommend it highly.

Just when I'd FINALLY gotten all my stuff loaded and organized... and when my online backup was still less than 50% complete... it just stopped working all together. All the lights come on - it appears in my tray - but I can't access ANY of the files on it.I contacted LaCie, to see if they could troubleshoot or offer warranty assistance - they send me a new power cord (still not sure why) and then directed me to a company that asked "$2500 to start" to recover my data! My only other option was to return the obviously defective drive to LaCie and receive a replacement - and lose all of my data, which isn't really an option for most people I think. So I'm back to using my trusty old Maxtor from yesteryear, which had about half of my data on it... and I'm left storing a completely useless piece of LaCie hardware until I can find someone or some way to recover my data in a more cost-efficient manner.Shoddy piece of equipment obviously. And very unhelpful Customer Service. And a useless warranty. All in all, two very big thumbs DOWN.

I have a total of five LaCie external HD's including this one. I am not a Windows person so can not comment on how LaCie's are with PC's but they work great with MAC's. I have had two issues over the last few years. The first one was totally my goof up. The second one just a week ago was with this model. Suddenly the HD's icon would not come up on my Desktop. LaCie customer service on the phone was outstanding and I could not ask for better support than what I received. It was quickly determined that the issue was with the external power supply and in two days I received a new one free of charge. As for the HD itself (along with the others I own) I am very happy with them. One thing I really like about the LaCie's is the FireWire option. On a MAC you can use an outstanding program called SuperDuper! that will give you a bootable back up of your entire OS. In other words, if your internal HD croaks and after it is replaced you just run SuperDuper! and your MAC is back to just as it was prior to the HD failure. No files ... northing.. to reinstall. However, to do this you need FireWire and many other external HD's no longer offer FireWire.

Good solution if you are looking for a RAID drive setup. I use the drive in RAID 1 (fully redundant) for peace of mind. Reviewers are right, the included printed owner's manual is pretty useless. HOWEVER, you can download a good owner's manual from LACIE website, so that was not an issue for me. You need to hold a certain button down for a few seconds to change RAID settings (do this before you copy any data to the hard drive), this is super easy to do once you have the good user manual.Over all, happy with the drive so far. Fan noise is a minor but somewhat annoying issue. It's not "jet turbine" loud as some people claim, but it is noticeable. The drive is in my bedroom; I turn it off (and my computer) when I go to sleep; cannot imagine trying to sleep w/ it on. While computer is on, I have music playing and don't notice the fan noise. My mac mini is whisper quiet, so by comparison the drive is loud. It is not louder than my older external drives and aging windows laptop. I rated it 4 stars instead of 5 b/c the drive fan does not turn off even after the drive has spun down and is sleep mode. The fan should turn off at this point. Again, not a big issue. Get the drive if you really need it.

I have always been very pleased with the LaCie d2 Quadra drives. I have several and they have always been reliable. My older ones are still working fine. I like the fact that you can use it with USB or firewire. It's great for a Mac computer. If you have Firewire 800, you'll get transfer speeds twice as fast as USB 2. Also it does not have superfluous software which other external drives have, that can screw things up - so I've heard. (WD, are you listening?) I only wish they were a little cheaper.

So far the LaCie d2 Quadra 1TB hard drive is doing well. It was super-easy to set up and use. Unlike a Toshiba HD that we had nightmares with, the LaCie connected right away through the eSATA cable and is functioning well. We've had it about 2 months. Never could get any of our Vista computers to recognize the Toshiba through the eSATA cable, just the USB. Hardware Drivers and Vista, oh my!

This external drive was fine when it worked for the first two years I had it. However, when it failed technicians at La Cie told me to reformat the disk. It was a back-up for my iMac with 40 years of lessons, dozens of movies, thousands of photos, and over 8500 songs for the iPod classic. EVERYTHING was lost and could not be recovered in a data recovery center after they tried for three weeks to help.I am very dissatisfied with the abysmal customer service and this unreliable French product, but it is the only game in town for a Mac with Time Machine, so I'm stuck buying another.

I completely agree with the people who say that the fan is noisy. I am not sure why but at random times the fan revs up to high speed and sits that way for 5 or 10 minutes, regardless of the temp of the room or of the drive. I can feel the air coming out of the drives vent and it is cool but it is a small issue and the only one that i have had. ( i am guessing that the temp. sensor is poorly positioned inside the case but i don't care enough to open it up and find it).I also read the above reviews and think that some people do not understand how to use this drive. you set the raid type on the drive using the supplied instructions and the little metal key. When you connect the drive to windows (i use 7x64) or mac (i use 10.6) you open the respective disk utility and format the drive as a normal drive. you do not tell windows or os-x that it is a raid drive because the raid functionality is being handled in the drive hardware and should remain invisible to the computer.from the computers point of view it is one big drive and you can partition it or whatever you want but if you tell the computer it is raid you will have problems because you did not read or understand the instructions.Hope this helps.CZR

I received the product and was able to move a large number of files over. The next day the product would not properly connecting via USB cord. I tried three other cords thinking it was a defective cord but it was a defective input slot. I contacted LaCie and after a week of back and forth, they told me to return to the store that sold me the product. I asked them to help me retrieve all the files stored in the product but they told me to go get a refund. Now I will have to search for a computer repair store to remove the Rikiki case and try to save my files. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT IF YOU VALUE YOUR FILES.
