If you want the smallest hard drive then LaCie Rikiki portable hard Drive should be the best bet. The 640 GB capacity packed into this small piece is amazing. The design is also good. Other than the design, storage capacity and its portability, there is nothing much to rave about this hard drive. The drive also works silently. No maddening noises that the hard drives usually make. It is not possible to use this drive with the desktop because the USB cable is too short. Unsatisfactory speeds too..someone said that it is more like a pocket hard drive. Don't even put it in your pocket or you could face the brunt of those sharp edges.

I purchased two of these drives at the same time several months ago. I rarely make the time to write product reviews, but I'm disappointed enough with these to make it worth writing this. Several weeks ago, the first drive died after dropping from its vertical position to its horizontal position (one edge of the drive was touching the table the whole time. The other edge fell about 4 inches.) The drive didn't stop working right away--it started clicking more and more over the next hour and finally stopped working altogether. I was really lucky to have the drive backed up, but it still cost a lot of time.The other drive has made a cheap, noisy whirring sound about 30% of the time (silent otherwise) since I took it out of the box. I will be contacting LaCie for replacements of both drives soon. I've had no issues with the Western Digital and Iomega Firewire 800 externals I'm also using.****Follow-up: LaCie handled replacing the faulty first drive quickly and painlessly. Thanks. I'm changing my 1 star to a 2 star rating.

I bought this unit 11/08/07 through Amazon.com via Beach Camera for my Time Machine (mac) to use for storage. Lately, the unit's icon disappeared from my desktop and I couldn't get it to display again. Time Machine told me it couldn't access Lacie. The blue light stayed on until I turned it off. I left it sit for a while until I heard it running again, I checked the switch and it was still off. It was making about the same noise as when it is doing the backup. I checked my desktop and system preferences to see if Lacie was connecting with my computer - but no.I contacted Lacie technical services and filled out a support ticket and they responded. Several tickets later they have quit responding. They seem to be in-denial by insisting that I try to communicate with the Lacie somehow through the disk utility application. When I first went to that app Lacie icon was there but disappeared and never returned again after I selected it. Without a icon or a page to select it is impossible for me to communicate with the unit, also there isn't any Lacie application either. The last response from them was for me to send them a jpg image of my disk utility page. I had to use my camera because my screen shots were in tiff format and not acceptable to attach. The jpg turned out ok and I sent that to them.It is a 3 year warranty until ll/08/2010 and one the requirements is that I have to get an "a Return Material Authorization number" from them before I can send off the unit at my expense.If the status with them changes I will update this review.

I have used a LaCie 301827U d2 Quadra 1 TB eSATA External Hard Disk before. So, my thoughts immediately went to LaCie 2TB d2 Quadra Hard Disk 301500U when I needed an extra hard drive for my iMac. It has a 32 MB cache much better because my previous one had only 16 MB. Connected it to my iMac with the eSATA card that I purchased and it started up immediately. There's also a USB2 and Firewire 400 / 800. Can't say it's silent because it does make noise at times.My LaCie really backed up 450 gb of files in nine hours and I have much more space left to store other files. Once I had to report a defect to the LaCie customer support and found out that I have to ship it at my expense. Some customer-friendliness on that count could've been better.

When you buy an extra hard drive you buy it for the piece of mind that you will be able to hold onto your most important data and information. After having my drive for more than a year it stopped working. I took it to a local computer shop where they told me that the hard drives are still working and that the controller has gone bad. I contacted Lacie to see about getting another controller but they told me that they do not sell the controllers and that I could have sent the drive back to them and they would have fixed it, but since we opened up the drive it is no longer covered under the warranty. Do you honestly think I would send a drive that contains some of my most important information to a huge company so some kid can fix my drive and have access to my most personal info.Now I am left with no other option but to wait until another identical drive goes on sale and then I have to fix it myself. Lacie is a terrible company and is on their way out of business. Consider buying something else or buy two lacies so that when one craps out you have another for parts.

I bought an earlier version of this drive -- the smooth-sided original model -- and it performed exactly as billed. It feels sturdy, etc. -- and has an aluminum baseplate.Since then I've bought two of the 500 gb newer models. The first one I bought was a little louder than the original, rattled a _little_ bit, has a plastic baseplate, but seems solid after six months of operation. The second one, up and running as of 16.April 2010, is very loud, very rattly and has subtle cosmetic differences from the other, including the color of the aluminum finish and the blue light on the front. They don't really match in appearance, which stinks but I'll live and may not even notice in a week or so.Will it last? I don't know, but I now have my doubts.November 2012 update: Still going strong, despite the noise. This makes me happy, and I'll add a fourth star.

Really, Lacie have let down their engineering department by coupling their hard work with this AWFUL power supply. The web's awash with horror stories about the power supply failing. On the other hand, I found their support to be helpful in rectifying the matter. Heads need to roll at the QC department for these power supplies.

This is the last LaCie drive I will ever buy. It is the third one in a row that has died on me. This one lasted 9 months. The other two both died in under two years. They just do not make a quality product anymore.Also, LaCie will not send you a new drive under the warranty until you send them the old one first, and they spend a lot of time messing with it. This leaves you without a drive for so long, that you have to buy a new drive to do your work and hold your data while waiting for them to process the warranty. Unless you pay them an extra $50 for a "special" warranty, which is the warranty that any reputable company would provide to all customers. What a racket.

Huge capacity, top quality, very good price. I am a professional photographer working on Macs and needed this big T4 LaCie to back up and store all my image files.I have been using LaCie's for 10 years and never have had a problem or failure. Solid product, happy with the purchase. The only complaint I have is that it has a tendency to slow down work flow when it is connected. Software takes longer to fire up, commands lag just a bit. I'm using a MacBook pro that is lightning fast to start with, so it's not slowing me down enough that I won't use it. All in all I trust it to back up all of my projects.

This hard drive is great! It's not noisy and doesn't really heat up that much. I'm surprised at the stability and performance of this hard drive. There's only one thing - the shortcut button software is not compatible with Windows 7 so I can't use that feature. Also, they could use a better backup assistant software. But I could always use the Windows 7 built-in backup system anyway so I don't mind. What matters to me is its performance and stability which works superb!

I would try different machines, different cables, different operating systems and only got it to read about half the time. And rarely the same way twice in a row.It came to a bitter end one night when I felt it was mocking me.Could be the unit itself was a lemon; I have another, older LaCie drive (the one that looks like a big white Lego) that always mounts, always runs, is as quiet as could be. But this particular one, no.

I did not like the WD unit because its did not seem to be very well built, did not feature drive status lights to tell you about a failed drive, its design made it extremely difficult to replace a failed drive, and its RAID settings required a driver to change on the target machine (which had issues on some MACs).The LaCie case is all metal, very sturdy, and well finned for heat dissipation.The Drives have status indicators and are easily and quickly swappable (hot swappable in some RAID modes)The fan is normally quiet but can be fairly loud on occasionThe unit features ON, OFF, and Auto modes (auto waking/sleeping the drives as use permits)The RAID mode is configurable within the unit itself and is transparent to whatever you hook it up to (other than its size looks different and will need reformatting when you change RAID mode).The performance of this unit is FAR faster than the WD unitI took this unit out of the box, switched its RAID mode, connected it to a MAC to reformat it, then plugged it into my Airport Extreme to share it on my LAN and WAN. The process took me about 15 minutes and the unit has performed flawlessly in AUTO mode on my Airport EXtreme for the past month.My only worry was when I investigated LaCie's "advance replacement" option for this drive. They wanted almost half the cost of the drive for it. I may purchase a second unit for a spare just in case (that gives me two spare drives as well).Anyway, so far I am extremely pleased.

Good looking HDD, runs quietly and is fast. Easy plug and play w/ MAC (or PC) OS. I prefer LaCie over my other HDD-- except my SSD's, of course.

To be honest, I couldn't believe that it was possible to get 250GB of data is something as small as the Rikiki. (I also have a 500GB Rikiki -- same size -- and even more unbelievable.)USB power means that you don't have to plug your backup hard drive into a wall outlet -- significantly reducing desk/office clutter. The Rikiki's are also remarkably quiet. You don't know they are there.It is an ideal match for my iMac's Time Machine because when the computer is off, the backup drive is off!Would I recommend the Rikiki? Absolutely. It is small, but sensational.

At our professional recording studio, we've been through 4 LaCie Big Disk 1 TB external hard drives since 2007. None has lasted more than about 6 months until the last one, which hung in there for a year. They're stored in a quiet and air-conditioned machine room, alongside PC workstations that have been running for years. Everything is UPS protected. Each drive eventually fails to the point that it just makes drive-hashing noises and doesn't show up at all on the computer. I've swapped power supplies, connector cables and computers (everything in the skimpy LaCie suppport web page). They're 0 in 4.They're fine until they die. Then they're doorstops. Caveat emptor!

LaCie d2 Quadra Hard Disk 1 TB is sturdy unlike the other hard disks I have used. This offers the triple interface option - eSATA, Firewire 400 and 800 and USB 2.0. I use it as a USB device and it works without any problems. But there are other problems like really slow speed, need to wait for hours to transfer a 50 gb file. The d2 vibrates so much that it is really awful. The noise adds to it makes it sound really messy. This device is not rugged so keep it in a safe place. One fall and it is dead... according to friend's experience. No recovery services as well.

Had my LaCie for three weeks now- no problems. I shopped on line and bought this sight un seen. I realize with the turndown that you can buy this size drive for less, or more to the point, one twice the size for pennies on the dollar. But I have peaked at a lot of the low end (price wise) stuff out there. Wow is mine sweet. Who ever this Neil Poulton guy is- I give him my $20. Those eBooks look like total explative. Maybe they are the same under the hood- but looks count man. Have some pride you geeks. I always want a cheap alternative - but this is cheap enough. I digress.Software- don't think you are going to plug this or any hard drive and just back up. Like all the geeks are out there telling you. This is complex. Stratagies and software options. New technologies and changing(aging) formats. The LaCie comes with at least 3 options - I chose Retrospect- for Mac. Its powerful to be sure. But not for the over 60 , just getting into email crowd, (hey I'm only 59) Do you do Snapshots or Archiving- Duplicating and should you daisy chain more drives. How do you practice a Restore? Just a word to the wise. Any one who says its simple- here's how I do it- OK if its simple would you mind just showing me this once?But I was wondering something about the drive and put out a support question, it was handled well- appropriately. Albeit in typical "e" format. Not that I want someone to call me on my home phone mind you. Hey I'm just thankful its not in Chinese with the funny pictures they use.Observations? Terrabit is the next megabit. I like the idea of 500 because these things will bite the dust in maybe 4years- so split things up on successfully newer equipment over time. but if you shoot SLR - D in raw or shoot video- better start with terra, for all your big cars you Americans really miss the point of memory and bandwith. Multiplication tells alot.So the tough call is 500 or terra really- the outer case- well that's no contest.Its not all that quiet bytheway. Its equivalent to my G5 iMac (PPC)-you might want it off the desktop in a drawer or something.They say its better to keep it running- but if you only access it occasionally? - your call. I store my photos- (all of them, to free up my limited (75) gig hard drive) in iPhoto libraries so I need it more than occasionally. And if you separate your music and video libraries- you get the picture.I give it another half point but not 5 because it is metal gray - should be white- sorry Neil.

I received my drive early and was In perfect new condition. I had read some reviews that made me worry I might never get my package but that was not the case. I would buy from them again. Great price!
