Wow, I never thought this lacie could be this small. Its thin, sturdy, and made with excellent quality. Works just as intended. Easy to back up and adds USB boost to speed up transfers. It doesn't get hot and you won't hear that "spinning" or "vibrating" sound like the hard drive I used to own. One caveat though, the mini usb cable is so short, basically it is useless when plugged in a desktop, a blu-ray or HDTV. Well maybe it was really designed for portability. Not a big deal for a product that is so good. All other gadgets come with their own "powered" Mini USB cable which you can use.

I bought the Lacie d2 Quadra just short of a month ago and it has been great so far. I know some reviewers complain about hard drive failure but I am unable to comment on that.Up until I got this hard drive, I had been using Western Digital Passports. I had one for back up use with Time Machine and one for extra storage. But the one I was using with Time Machine crapped out on me, and I decided I wanted something a little more substantial. I felt a stationary HD would better suit that situation. I am running a MacBook Pro with FireWIre 800, so I figured it made sense to look for a drive compatible with that. Why take up another USB if I didn't need to? And why not use the fastest port I have? So that was what I set out for. The Lacie had a number of positive reviews, I liked the look of it, it had my port needs, and the price was right, so I bought it.So far I have been extremely happy. The set up was dead easy, I had it running in a matter of moments. I have actually partitioned mine so that I can run HD movies I have downloaded off of it without keeping them on my internal HD. They run nicely off of the FireWire 800 speed. Time Machine worked flawlessly with it as well. Another great feature for us users of recent Macs is that you can actually use the FireWire 400 on slot on it if you are connected through FireWire 800 (won't work with USB 2.0). So I know many people are annoyed that Apple has stopped putting FireWire 400 ports into their computers, but I was actually able to pull video off of my DV camcorder by connected it to the Lacie which was then connected to my computer through the FireWire 800. It worked flawlessly.I am very happy with the drive and hope to stay that way. I will be sure to update if I run into any troubles potential buyers should be aware of.

They work fine for as long as they work, but the quality is incredibly substandard. I'm pretty tolerant of technology, and recognize that there's the possibility of a lemon with any company or product line. But I've gone through two of these in the last two years. The most recent one, the d2 Quadra, is only about six weeks old. Out of the box, it made an ominous "thunk" noise every time the disk would engage. But in the past week, it's now begin making a low droning noise at all time, which leads me to believe it's not long for this world. I only hope it remains functional long enough to copy my data to a replacement drive.Do not, and I repeat, do not buy these drives. I never will again. I'm tired of throwing my money down a rat hole.

This is the fifth LaCie HD I have owned. None have given me even a few seconds of trouble. Extremely reliable in my experience. Will continue to buy LaCie in the future as my storage needs dictate.UPDATE: This latest drive failed after one day. I suspect it is a bad power supply. Unfortunately, during my attempts to resolve the problem with LaCie, I discovered they are quite unhelpful. Their support system consists of back and forth browser-based emails, each of which takes a full business day to complete. And each (generic) response is provided by a different person, so very little continuity about your problem is maintained. After 10 days of this back and forth, nothing was accomplished!So, I simply contacted Amazon and asked for a replacement (which is what I should have done in the first place!). They responded and shipped a replacement immediately! Kudos to Amazon!Moral of the story: Buy from Amazon with confidence, but don't bother with LaCie support. In a word, it Sucks!UPDATE! After receiving my replacement drive from Amazon (Thank you Amazon!), I encountered the exact same set of problems getting it set up. The drive would not mount. Long story short, rather than use the "Setup Assistant" provided with the drive, I simply Erased the drive, and it then mounted on my desktop just fine. No bad power supply, just a software glitch apparently. I informed LaCie of this, hopefully to help other future buyers. I'm running a iMac with Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.6.

Got the wrong item. The description of the item and the unit did not match. Expected a DHCP server. Not sure where the mix-up occurred.

I've had this drive for close to a year. It works fine, but the problem is that it does not turn off when the computer goes to sleep or gets disconnected. It has a three position switch, OFF-AUTO-ON. On the AUTO it is supposed to sense when the computer goes to sleep and turn itself off. It does not do that. And it's loud enough so that I end up turning it off manually. Bottom line, given the state of this technology nowadays, there is no reason for this "feature" and I would not get it again.

LaCie d2 2TB drive. It was sent from J&R. It arrived damaged, possibly during shipment. I sent it back and am waiting for a new one.

I normally keep this unplugged so that it hopefully lasts longer (for those who don't know, external HD's have the nortorious reputation of breaking frequently). The side design definitely helps keep the unit cool. The entire unit, other than the blue light up button is metal, so heat has a lot of surface area to disperse. I have only downloaded stuff to the HD using a USB cable, and am able to download 75+ GB(mostly hi-def pics, videos, and music) in about 20-30 min.I have found the software that came with the HD useless, but that is probably because I don't use the HD/have it connected to my computer all of the time. To put stuff on the HD, all you need to do is follow the instructions to install the driver for the HD, and then you can use windows explorer to put files on the HD.

It's solid, and when you pick it up it doesn't feel like a cheap little toy.LaCie seems to be well reviewed and respected, and initially I feel very confident about this drive. The price was great for the amount of space, interface connections, and solid build.

It's all easy and has alot of storage and can be formated to work with multiple OSs.The only problem is that most computers these days dont have USB 3.0 cappable hardware yet, so it'll work like a normal USB 2.0... Oh well, we'll get there soon enough

I got this external hard drive 2 months ago and it is already useless. It worked flawlessly for the first month and I was very happy with it, however, about a month ago my laptop would not recognize it after I connected it. After reformatting everything it began to work okay again and then two weeks later I have the same problem but this time it the reformat did not work. I am working on my thesis and thought that this would be a good way to backup all of my data in case I lost something off of my laptop. I now have an external hard drive that I cannot retrieve any files off of. I will never purchase something from this company again.

I purchased this drive in the erroneous belief that my fairly new MacBook Pro 2010 would be equipped with USB 3.0. It's not, which I could have figured out in advance, particularly given how slow Apple is to adopt other manufacturer's cutting edge technology. (e.g. how long we had to wait for SD ports and are still waiting for HD ports.) Mea culpa. Only MacBook Pro 17" owners will be able to add USB 3.0.Other than that, another compact and well designed drive from LaCie. But there are better (bigger) options out there for USB 2.0 users.

This is my second LaCie d2 Quadra hard drive, and I can't even count how many other LaCie drives I've purchased over the years. Both this and my other Quadra have been fast, reliable drives. I especially like that they have so many ports for excellent connectivity, and that all the (albeit short) cables are included. The fact that they also look fantastic is a plus. The only complaint I have about the drives is that they generate a lot of heat and do raise the temperature of the small room where I have them, but I'm willing to have that as a trade-off for all the other benefits.Regarding the issues mentioned by other reviews making negative comments, this is my second drive and I have never had any problems with a power supply unit failing. And that said, even if it does, that's not a difficult problem to fix: just get a new enclosure. All your data is still there.Even so, I'm not worried about a failure of any sort. I've been using LaCie drives for nearly 20 years now and I have never seen a single one fail.

I will admit that this drive has saved me in many ways. I now use it both as my Time Machine backup disk and as video storage to keep some space open on my primary drive. My poor 4-year-old iMac's 160GB drive filled up over a year ago--despite resistance on my part to rip every DVD I own for better access.I now can relax--but this is a review of a specific drive, and I could have bought any brand of terabyte drive and had these benefits. Why this drive?I have always liked LaCie drives--neither I nor any Mac-using friends have ever had any complaints with them. They work, and they keep working. That much--for this drive--is true. However, the software they provide to use the Shortcut Button does not work with Snow Leopard. I'm not even asking it to be 64-bit--I can deal with the occasional re-load of System Preferences, esp. since this is a set-it-forget-it kind of thing. Yet I can't even open the PrefPane. This is a known incompatibility, and they even say so on their site. Yet months after Snow Leopard came out and it still doesn't work. So I have this pretty glowing button that doesn't do anything.On the upside, it works like a champ--though a bit noisily at times. It has Firewire 400 and 800--both plugs. I wish my iMac had 800; at least my wife's MacBook pro does. USB 2 is also welcome, though really not necessary for me personally. Oh, and it comes with all cables--Firewire 400 to 400, 800 to 800, and USB 2. In an age where printer manufacturers make you cough up extra cash just to plug in their device, this is very welcome.Now if only they would fix that PrefPane....

Man this drive is small. It isn't a speed demon; on my Intel Mac Mini (1.66GHz w/ 1 GB memory) I get transfer rates just shy of 1 MB/s, so we're talking all day+ to transfer a 100 GB of data. But even after 10 hours of straight use, the aluminum case is barely warm to the touch. So I'm hoping this improves the odds of the drive having a long and healthy life.

After many hard drives failing over the years, we switched to completely LaCie and we have been using them exclusively for the last 3 years! We love it. There is never a question anymore as to which to purchase. We love the LaCie d2Quadra Hard either the 1 or 2 TB and the all of the Rugged, especially the 7200.

We bought this for two reasons: Time Machine back-ups for two macs, and as a media server to hold our music/movies/pictures in one central place. It excels at both.For the back-ups, we plugged it into a mac mini and selected it as the back-up volume. Done. It also is the wireless back-up drive for my macbook pro, which was similarly simple to set up. Make sure both the hosting computer and the target backup computer are on the same network, share the drive from the hosting machine, and then select it from the back up machine. Easy breezy. No hassle, passive, back-ups, and done wirelessly too.We also use it as a media server, which is why we bought a 2 TB drive in the first place. Connected via firewire to the hosting machine, transfer speeds are very fast (using a 5ghz wireless N connection to other machines), and streaming to other computers is no problem.The design, as to be expected from LaCie, is exceptional. Additionally, it runs very quiet, even when under heavy transfers. To be fair, though, it is located in an entertainment center about 6 feet from the couch, so if you're using it on a desktop or something, your mileage here may vary.All in all, the best external hard drive we've ever owned, and would definitely buy a LaCie product again.
