I plugged the 640GB Rikiki into my laptop and XP Pro installed it. When I clicked on the Rikiki drive letter in "My Computer", a window came up and said that I would have to go through a format. I accepted the license ULA that popped up and started the format. The format started but after about 5 minutes, a message popped up and said that the Format could not complete nor could the "User Manual" or "Back-up Software" be copied. It said the Manual and software could be downloaded from the Lacie website and gave me the link. I found the Rikiki user's manual and went through the described window's format procedure. I tried twice, but each time the drive appeared to be formatting, but stopped in about an hour saying "Drive Could Not Be Formatted". For the lack of anything else to try, I selected the "Extended Partition" option and started the format. In a few hours it completed. I copied almost 400GB to the drive overnight. The next day, I added a few more small files to the drive. A short time later I clicked on the drive in "My Computer" and it said "Drive is not formatted". I wasted a few days so far with this drive and now I'll have to contact Lacie and see what they say or just return the drive.I described my drive problems to Lacie tech support and they recommended that I get a replacement drive. Amazon promptly sent out a new one. This time, the new one installed and formatted just like the manual says. Copied over 400GB and no problems so far. I upped my rating from one star to four since I wasted so much time on the first defective drive. Otherwise it would have been 5 stars. I also bought the Lacie padded drive case for the Rikiki, but you really need to purchase a cable with a right angle USB plug in order to use the drive while strapped in the case since the USB port is on the side of the drive.

I got this item from J&R, it reached before schedule date in perfect condition, I always trust lacie products.I'm using it by USB 2.0 and satisfied with speed. I recommend this product.

Excellent hard drive. the software is friendly to install and works perfect. all you have to improve is the issue of partition. would be cool to have 500 and 500 gb mac pc and not 900 and 32 gb

I bought a pair of these, one for music and video storage and the other for backups from my Mac. I installed the foot and had them sitting vertically. Six months later, one started making a bit of vibration noise, which went away when I removed the feet and laid the drives on their sides, but I'm now a little worried about how long these will last. In general, though, I'm a big fan of LaCie drives-- I've had several, and they've served well.

These LaCie drives are a piece of garbage, and should be steered well clear of. I have had four of them while working with my daughter's high school band videos, and EVERY single power supply has failed! No company with a shred of integrity should allow this situation to persist. In addition, a 500GB drive was only saved by DiskWarrior, and the two-year old 1TB drive will not load properly, and makes clicking sounds that seem to signal its demise. Since this drive is only a lightly used back up, this is simply disgraceful.I will never use LaCie again, and I strongly recommend everyone to do likewise.

had this thing and it was great for a few months then i started having issues with the usb port. After a while the usb didn't work. If i wasn't tec savvy I would have lost my mind because all my data was trapped on there... If your using this as a temp solution something that may not get much use it's great but if your going to use this as your primary on the go drive I would not recommend it. Last thing you want to do is be some where and you can't access the information you really need.

I bought this drive some months ago, I trusted Lacie brand and the three year guarantee. I did not take a look to the reviews on-line until I had the first problem with the drive.The disk has a mechanical failure and need to be send to be replaced, however as I have been traveling with the disk the support team says that this disk was not made to use as a portable one and as I have been traveling this was the reason of the failure.After calling several times and holding on line more than 30 minutes I could explain my situation. The answer: The representative Tom told me they do not honor worldwide guarantees on the Us.

In less than a month after my purchase I got a shocking notice from my computer that my LaCie External HD on my desktop could not be found. Evidently unknown to me, these drives have a nasty history of power supply failures. I was then sent a replacement with the assurance that it would resolve the problem. Well, now the replacement power supply has failed too. I don't understand why a company like LaCie that's been around for as long as they have can allow a problem like this to continue without providing a reliable, longer lasting, higher quality power supply for it's drive's?This experience has taught me not to purchase any other products from LaCie! They have a decent product that their to blind to see how providing a better quality power supply is good for business. Unless they can provide a no cost solution to this issue for their customers, I strongly suggest to avoid doing any business with LaCie!One last thing in conclusion, they provide no extended warranty for their products in Hawaii where I live or Alaska. Why can't they include using FedEx to cover their extended warranty that I wouldn't mind paying for?

I really needed some room on my computer to store all my photo's. This product has worked perfectly! The best part is I can save all my photo's to it and take them with me where ever I go! I would recommend this product to everyone!

All hard drives fail, but if a drive this big fails within 6 months of ownership, shouldn't there be something the company can do? Lacie has by far the worst customer service I've ever encountered in all my years of Tech Support. Buyer beware. I had information on this drive backed up to several smaller Lacie 1 and 2 TB drives, one of which failed simultaneously! Suffice it to say I will never buy a Lacie product again. Do yourself a favor and Google "Lacie + complaint" before even considering buying from them. I never write reviews on Amazon, but good lord do I feel robbed on this purchase...

Have only had this drive for about 1 month now. So far, so good. I bought it to act as a backup drive for my Mac. One of the features that attracted me to this drive is the auto-power setting. In this mode, the drive automatically powers off when you shut down your computer and powers back up when you start it up. This has worked well. I haven't done any measurements of speed, but via FireWire 800, it is plenty fast enough for backups. The unit appears to be well made externally, is quiet, and runs very cool as compared to some external drives I have used in the past.I have not used any of the software programs that comes with it as I have no need for them. It did seem like the software was the typical, somewhat crippled versions that you tend to get in these situations. The real test of course will be how the drive holds up over time.

I have several Lacie drives and I love them. This particular model lacks a on/off/standby switch on the back allowing you to control how it powers on/off. So the drive just shuts itself off when it wants to and every time improperly ejects itself from my running computer... Its horrible, after the third time five days after purchasing it, it fried and I lost everything. Would not recommend this model to my enemy...just sayin'.

Our 2tb drive failed a few days ago. We got a couple years out of it. We hoped it was just another LaCie power supply failure (well known and acknowledged by LaCie) but replaced it and tried numerous times to mount it on several different machines. We also tried changing the access from 800 to 400, even to USB. None of them recognized the drive.We really wanted to like LaCie products. We have purchased at least ten of their smaller drives, five of those had power supply failures which LaCie was very quick to replace.Sorry but no more LaCie products for us. Probably going to a WD product.

Beware of this product. After purchasing it in October of 2010, it now will not turn on/power up. I am in the process of contacting technical support. It looks like I either lost priceless videos of my sons first 6 months of life...or I will have to pay a small fortune to have a computer magician work some magic. I am hoping for the latter.I will never buy a La Cie product again.
