I bought this drive several months ago and have been using it for backup storage on Windows 7. So far this drive has worked exactly to specifications and has had no issues. I have not had the problems with the drive not reconnecting properly mentioned by the other reviewers. I am, however, connecting the device using the provided USB 3.0 card into a late model computer. Trying to connect USB 3.0 devices into older machines using USB 2.0 can be dicey at times.Since the case itself is a heat sink and it doesn't use fans the device is very quiet and well suited for office use.

After weighing the options available and returning the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Home 2TB twice due to set up issues, plugging this in and having it work with zero hassle was a breath of fresh air. Working with a Mac makes the USB 3 feature null at this point. Still, the storage, flexibility (it came with well-designed international adapter plug-ins), silence, and ease of use make it a winner. I'm plugging this into my router via USB and call it a day. I highly recommend it as an elegant and simple solution for storage expansion.

I was a loyal LaCie customer. All my external hard drives have only been LaCie going back 10 years now. I liked the look and portability of this new LaCie Rikiki model, especially its 1TB size, for my new Mac Book Air.I was disappointed with all the errors it's been giving me since I got it over the holidays. I had to keep transferring all my data to another drive in order to reformat. It finally burned out after only 5 months.I just called customer service, which took 12 minutes to reach a technician. Customer service was pretty on top of things and will replace the device, but I still have to cover the cost of shipping back to them ($15).I will no longer remain a loyal LaCie customer after this experience. Will now start researching all future external hard drives I buy from now on.

I bought this as my first LaCie hard drive to use as a backup for my photos. I went with LaCie because of their supposed high quality drives. I know many photographers who swear by them. Unfortunately the Big Disk didn't even last a year. Now it's just a worthless hunk of metal. Even my cheap plastic WD MyBook drive has lasted more than twice as long as the LaCie (so far), which I would not have predicted.You may have heard of LaCie's good reputation, but do your research and double check your purchase before you buy a lemon.

The internal female connector for the power supply is delicately connected to the circuit board. 2 months, with the unit constantly plugged in and untouched, I noticed the drive randomly losing power. I thought there was an issue at the PC with firewire or eSATA (I use both), but it turns out that a little jiggle of the power cable would power the drive again. I dealt with this for awhile, then finally I had to bring the drive to a recording session so I could connect up to another computer, and the connection really gave me a hard time. I was lucky enough to get through my session (tie wrapping the power cord in such a way to keep the unit running)Finally the thing gave out and I had no drive (Sept. of 2009). So I opened up the unit thinking that I could just salvage the drive? Well, it's not an option with the way this thing is engineered. I had to resolder the connection, but I could still see the potential for another breakage. The female connector is so delicately fastened to the board, there is just no way this thing will handle plugging and unplugging the unit if you need to take it out of the house... Do what I did and smother the connection with silicone if you find that you are opening up the case (see above!). The drive is quiet and performs great though. Drags and drops 11 gigs of files like butter : ) I've owned this drive for 2 years now. 3 stars for installation because the case assembly is a little unusual. 3 stars on reliability for obvious reasons.

Despite a seemingly easy installation and configuration, the front light on this drive failed within 4 months of owning it. After 9 months, one of the 1TB mirrored drives failed, and then, after receiving the "repaired" version of the drive, I discovered that the RAID "safe" mode didn't function, which was the redundant back-up capability I bought it for in the first place. At first Lacie didn't feel they need to pay for shipping on a warranty repaired device, then after sending it back, it doesn't function.Additionally, the fan is extremely loud and annoying. I took a shot on Lacie again due to the design and entry-level price for a RAID capable drive, but like the other Lacie externals I've owned that failed prematurely, this drive lived up to Lacie's disappointing product line.

This drive failed about 3 months after I bought it. I used all the standard that I know to fix a drive, including using Disk Warrior to recover data. All failed. I contacted technical support and they insisted on taking me through some of the things I tried and they, of course, failed again ... wasting another hour of my time. They were then very reluctant to replace the thing and told me that if they got it working then I would be charged for the service/new drive. Such is their faith in technical support. Finally, after wasting another hour of my time they allowed me to send it back. A couple of weeks later I get it back from them: The same drive (or at least the housing) with the same serial numbers. They "fixed it" (and did not charge me because it was really was dead). About nine months later it completely died again (now outside warranty) and it is a doorstop. I suspect they replaced the stuff inside the box with a refurbished drive of some other piece of garbage. Two morals: These things fail and LaCie technical support is really, really awful and unpleasant. Stay away!

This review is for the LaCie 301343U 2TB Big Disk Quadra. It is definitely a better design than previous LaCie Big Disks. It has improved heat dissipation and a better more energy efficient power supply over older models. I use this as a networked drive for media files and as a TimeMachine backup disk. In constant use for almost 2 years now.My 3 year old LaCie 301199U Big Disk Extreme+ is now starting to act up and is no longer reliable. This unit would get to hot when in an enclosed cabinet.Pros: - 2 TB of reliable storage. - Very fast (especial connected via Firewire800) - Gets warm but cooler than older models - Very compatible (eSATA, Firewire400, Firewire800 and USB 2.0 interfaces) - Very quiet - Easy to daisy chain to increase storage spaceCons: - Non (this drive has never given me problems)

I have been using it as network attached drive, connected via USB to my wireless router, which is connected to my network via gigabit Ethernet. This system works well, but is not as fast as direct USB connection. It has been very reliable for almost 2 years.If you want to use this, I recommend only setups where it isn't on your desk. However, it has been very reliable, which is the main feature for backup storage.UPDATE: it isn't noisy now that it has stopped working after a bit over 2 years. It earned 1 star per full year. It worked well when it worked.

Design: black brushed aluminum is beautiful. this device oozes a quality build that looks and feels durable. being a 2.5" drive it's very portable, although the edges may be a bit sharp for some. the single notification light is nice and the exposed screws on the underside are a nice industrial detail. the USB 2.0 cord it comes with is very short which may be an issue when connecting to a desktop.Capacity: 640gb is quite a lot for a portable this size.Performance: it's not the fastest you can get but still runs quick enough to transfer a 2+ gb file in a reasonable amount of time. it'll most certainly do the job in terms of being a portable drive. having owned this for over a month now with daily use it does get warm but not hot.Overall: one of the best looking and portable drives you can get. it will allow you to jump between Mac and PC, however if you use Lacie's stock software to do so you're capped at 32gb for the Mac partition (i've bypassed that and reformatted mine to be a single shared hub readable on both platforms).

So, for my next external hard drive, I looked for a fanless one, and bought one of those LaCie "Design by Neil Poulton" drives. Beautiful black monolith design, no fan -- and it sounded like a popcorn popper when it would read and write. Arggh! It drove me crazy. I had to put it in a foam-lined box under my desk to keep the noise down (which put the beautiful design to waste).But this! This is a quiet external hard drive. Just the slightest whirring of the spinning disk, and a wee little bit of sound from the read and write heads (which I don't even notice anymore).I wish I'd bought two. I may yet.

I shoot and edit in AVCHD format, and was having problems with rendering taking forever and Premiere crashing on occasion. Now, editing is a breeze. I definitely recommend!

I was very disappointed with this drive. It arrived with no appearance of shipping damage. After unpacking and attempting to install the drive I discovered 1) the firewire 400 cable provided with the product did not fit: i.e. it would not plug into the firewire socket on the back of the drive, 2) the RAID configuration button did not work, so I could not change the RAID from 0 to 1 and 3) the push button on the front of the drive did not work. I immediately packed the drive up and shipped it back to Amazon for a refund. All the reviews I read about the LaCie drive were good, but this particular unit was totally unusable as advertised. You may have better luck than I, but I was not going to go through this again, so I went to Best Buy and bought an inexpensive external drive which is working just fine.Note: I rated this as one star in all categories because I never got past square 1 in trying to install the drive.

Well, this little drive did just that, so I did something I don't normally do - I got online to write a review.The most important part to me is build quality, and the Rikiki feels very solid. I really didn't expect this - after all, how many laptops do you know of, metal ones included, that don't flex anywhere? The Rikiki feels like a block of metal, not like a plastic board wrapped in tin foil.It also looks stunning. For once the product looked as good in real life as it does in the pictures. And it still looks stunning, half a year after I bought it. That's one good thing about metal and an anodized finish - it doesn't wear easily, and when it does it doesn't look bad.Formatted capacity turned out to be 596GB ... a huge amount for the size.Yes, the cord is very short. For its intended use that's a good thing - a long cord would severely detract from the portability as well as aesthetic. If you plan to keep this plugged into a desktop you're not even looking at the right type of product.So, my rating is 100% in every category - a really amazing product. If there's one thing wrong with it it's the name ... Rikiki makes me think of a cartoon mouse, which really doesn't go with the style.

So far it's performed perfectly. I have an Apple computer and I use this drive with Time Machine. When I bought it, it was definitely more expensive than other 1TB drives, but I wanted to spend the extra 30 bucks or so for 3 reasons:(1) It has all the different connection options (USB2, Firewire 400 & 800, eSATA).(2) I'm a sucker for the metal casing, which I find much more attractive than pretty much all the other options out there. Also worth noting is that the drive's feel matches its look -- it is heavy and very solid.(3) This hard drive's very similar predecessor, the LaCie 301827U d2 Quadra 1 TB eSATA/FireWire800/FireWire400/USB 2.0 External Hard Disk, had one of the best average star ratings of any hard drive (please note that when I bought this particular drive, there were only a few reviews up on this product page, so I trusted the 100+ positive reviews of the previous model).Since my purchase it looks like some 1-star reviews have been written about this drive (at the time f this writing, there are 4, 3 of which state that their drive has failed). The one-star reviews of this product make me nervous that my drive will crap out after a year -- but honestly, look at the reviews for ANY hard drive on the market, and you'll find those same 1-star reviews. I'll update this review if I do experience any problems in the future. For now, I couldn't be happier!
