I purchased this drive in early May of 2009 and it has been running continuously 24/7 ever since. I use this as a Time Machine backup drive for my weather station computer (Apple Macintosh 24" Intel iMAC running OSX 10.6.4) so it needs to be on all the time. In addition to this application, the other partitions are used for Time Machine backups for two other machines on our network plus a 200 GB free space partition for network storage . Transfer speeds with Firewire 800 and overall reliability have been impressive so far and with the 3 year P&L warranty, I have the piece of mind in knowing that I am covered should anything go south. So far there have been no issues and the drive runs very quiet. One of the other external drives on our network is showing signs of problems (EZQUEST 250 GB Firewire 400), so based on the solid performance of the d2 Quadra, I decided to replace the EZQUEST with another d2 Quadra. I just finished placing my order for the second unit and decided that it was time to post a review of this product.I generally don't give 5 star reviews as a matter of course, but based on how easy this drive was to setup with OSX and how well it has handled running continuously for over 14 months, I figured this product deserved the high score.Based on my experience with the product, aside from those reporting a dead drive out of the box or an early failure due to a defect, I don't understand where the folks giving this a 1-2 star review are coming from. I suspect their issues with performance are the result of pilot error, or some other user induced problem. The power supply failures many seem to be complaining about could be the result of poor AC line voltage consistency at the user's location coupled with a lack of surge protection. A high quality line voltage filter or battery backup with surge protection is a must for any computer gear, as is a well ventilated environment free from excessive heat for extended periods of time. Both of these conditions can cause a power supply to fail consistently unless the problems with fluctuating AC current/voltage and ventilation are corrected.

Being one of the few USB 3.0 hard drives on the market this one stands out. The design is great, simple brushed metal. There is a power button, power in, and a micro USB 3.0 port on one side. There is also a simple blue light to let you know the status of the drive (on/off/in use). There are two rubber rails the run along the bottom of the drive to help with shock absorption.Tested the drive by copying 31 gigs of HD video from the internal drive to this drive. It took a total of 5m 30s, or an average of 95/mb a second. (Haven't tried multiple small files yet, which will undoubtedly differ, but if I do I will update this review.) Well worth the small price difference vs a USB 2.0 drive. The drive does get warm to the touch, but no more than expected.Power supply comes with a few interchangeable plugs, so I suppose you could use this driver internationally.

As one other review mentioned, I could not get it to backup my high end HP Desktop PC with Windows 7. I also attempted to backup my Windows Home Server, a Mediasmart EX490 and it worked OK a couple times them dropped out as if it was not added. Apparently when one turns off the unit, it dismounts and is not recognized when you turn it back on for the next backup. I have not had any other problems with other backup drives like Seagate, Western Digital or Hitachi. Apparently the OEM drive in Lacie is a Toshiba and may have some idiosynchasies I'm not familiar with. I noticed this comes formatted for Apple Mac and perhaps was a more appropriate external hard drive for those computers. Lacie may be considered a high quality drive, but I could not get it to work for my purposes as when I attempted to backup my computers it had fatal errors, runtime errors, was real slow, very noisy and never finished before it dropped out and the backup program closed. I contacted Lacie Technical Support, but they were of little help and did not even address my problems in the problem ticket discussion. They have no 1-800 free phone support and no online chat, just email or call on your own dime.On the plus side, it looks like a real sturdy device and quality design. I'm sure a more advanced user may be able to get this 4TB external hard drive to work. Also as a note, I was using the eSATA connection at 3Gps in RAID 0 and that even appeared to be an unusually slow backup rate for this drive.Perhaps a more advanced user could figure out why this drive worked fine for a couple weeks then crapped out. Unfortunatley, an average user like myself gave up after a month and returned it back to Amazon.Puzzled, Perplexed and worn out in New England - Pete

I bought this hard drive, which was significantly more costly than most brands, for my business specifically for its compatibility with Apple's Time Machine, which is a terrific backup solution. It was indeed easy to set up and use, but within less than a year, it started making odd noises when backing up, and within less than two, would not write to the disk and could not be recognized by the computer. Since I knew the drive came with a 3-year warranty, I looked up my receipt and went to the LaCie website to review the warranty conditions, which I have copied and included below.I have three issues with their warranty:1) PLEASE NOTE THAT YOUR RECEIPT MUST HAVE THE SERIAL NUMBER OF THE HARD DRIVE ON IT FOR THE WARRANTY TO BE VALID AND SINCE THAT CAN ONLY BE FOUND ONCE YOU OPEN THE BOX, RECEIPTS DON'T INCLUDE IT. This would be a valid requirement if this was a major purchase where serial numbers are typically included, but it is not a valid requirement for a small electronics item.2) PLEASE FURTHER NOTE THAT THEY CAN REPLACE IT AT THEIR OPTION WITH A REMANUFACTURED UNIT RATHER THAN A NEW ONE, which also seems unfair since it's unlikely that one would get the full three years of use to which the buyer should be entitled.3) THE CUSTOMER MUST PAY ALL TRANSPORTATION COSTS FOR A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT - need I say more?Warranty language included here:"LaCie ("LaCie") warrants, to the original purchaser, that this equipment shall be free of defects in materials and workmanship for a period of three (3) years from LaCie's date of original shipment when the equipment is used normally and is properly serviced when needed. If you discover a defect covered by the warranty set forth above, your sole and exclusive remedy will be for LaCie, in its sole discretion to (i) repair or replace the product at no charge to you; or, if a repaired unit or replacement product is not available, (ii) to refund the current market value of your product. You acknowledge and agree that replacement product, at the sole option of LaCie, may be a new product or a remanufactured product. In order to receive the remedy set forth above, you must return the product during the warranty period and include with each returned product (i) a copy of your original purchase invoice to verify your warranty; (ii) a Return Material Authorization number; (iii) your name, address and telephone number; (iv) a copy of the bill of sale bearing the appropriate LaCie serial numbers as proof of date of original retail purchase; and (v) a description of the problem. The customer must pay all transportation costs for a returned product.

This is one of the best purchases I've ever made. It's 1 TB for less than most competitors, it's super compact, it looks gorgeous, it's USB 3.0, you get 10GB of online storage, and you get a whole slew of features you didn't know you wanted. You won't regret it. The ideal purchase for the minimalist.

I give it three stars due to it being a 1Tb without an external power supply. Also its nice and small. However one thing kills it, the usb connection is not sturdy at all. It does not stay connected, a simple bump will disconnected. If only they made it a bit deeper for the housing of the usb to lay flat with the disc housing it would have been proper.I have a rubber band holding the usb along the length by pushing it in and another one to holds the first rubber band so it wont fall off.I will not buy another one. Some time later...I just bought another one.

OK, didn't buy this from Amazon, but felt I had too write a review. I really liked this drive when I got it, it is a bit more pricey than mist but that is because of the multiple inputs from USB2 to firewire 800. It is also a much more sturdy than most and can daisy-chain no problem I have an iMAc and it was a breeze to hook-up and interface to Time Machine. Worked great but then...... The drive died before a year. Talked to Support and they knew right away what was wrong. The power supply. They sent me a new one because it was still under warranty. OK, stuff happens.. Well, in less than a year I'm back with a bad power supply. Contacted Support and while helpful they told me I now needed to buy a new power supply. $20.00 for the supply and $9.00 to ship. If it didn't work I could send it back in 30 days. OK, it appears they know that the supply sucks but I guess they figure that it takes almost a year that we will just continue to pay $29.00 every time it dies. Don't think so.. A well built drive with a major problem that seems to transcend all of their drives.. I would suggest looking at other drives. I now have a MyBook and it works like a charm.BEWARE.. Nice looking, Multiple connectors, great weight and build, but loses a power source every year, and they think you will continue to pay $29.00 a year to keep using it.. BAD BAD..

First off, the dimensions are smaller than I expected - about the size of a cigarette holder. Secondly, the aluminium casing is sweet - looks industrial and feels solid (especially great with Macs). Now for my first backup experience. I hooked this up using the integrated USB cable (USB 2.0 A to Mini-B) and ran the LaCie Setup Assistant software. It formatted flawlessly for my iMac. I fired up Time Machine for my maiden full-system backup and once the data started pumping, the little LED light flickered to life. This initial dump of about 230 GB took almost 2.5 hours. I'm happy with the speed given that it's only USB 2.0 and moving forward, only much smaller incremental backups will be made.Bonus points go to the no-frills setup, the flawless backup itself and that it's plug and play for both Windows and Mac. No drivers to download. The Manual and Utilities are included on the drive. I did not use the free online storage so I can't comment. Another plus is that it's USB-powered. Personally, I hate having yet another power adaptor that generates heat and defeats the portability of the device. No cons to report yet. Will update this review if warranted.

I've owned and used Lacie drives for years and never had an issue. Used this one as my main audio files drive with Pro Tools (not heavily) for about a year. It recently starting making noise and wouldn't mount until I unplugged and replugged it in. I was able to get it mounted again and backed up. That was the last time it worked and it is now DOA. Is this a reasonable amount of time for a drive to work? I have older drives that are still going strong, so I think not. I didn't lose any data and realize that any hard drive lasting is a crap shoot. Still disappointed that I have to replace it this soon.

I have bought two of these drives, about a month apart. I bought one, loved it, and then bought a second one. Then, after just a couple of months of ownership, they started failing. No explanation for it at all. Suddenly files would never finish transferring, and the speed with which they failed grew steadily faster very quickly until soon the drive would disconnect after just a few seconds of connection.I purchased these drives based on a reputation they had, and I trusted them with my files. Now all of those files, very suddenly and for no reason, are inaccessible to me. I troubleshooted (troubleshot?) every other possible cause for this. Believe me, I did all I could to try to get it to work. The drives are just really, really bad, plain and simple.First I pay LaCie for a piece of junk. Then I contact them and they want me to pay them even more money so that I can send them my drive and get another piece of junk in return, at my expense. If I want the data off my original drive, that costs even more money. Money money money. You get what you pay for. If you value your data, do not buy LaCie.

Upon receipt of the product, one of the two hard drives was already faulty. It took a few days of back and forth emails between a customer service representative of Lacie and myself for them to confirm that one of the hard drives was, in fact, faulty. This is where the problem began. Despite the constant attention I gave to this matter, it took approximatley 3 weeks for them to actually send a replacement drive. Their guy did absolutely everything possible to drag out the process, including requesting a picture of the hard drive and then a better picture of the hard drive. Don't waste your money.

Our LaCie raid failed, in warranty, and we are in the midst of finding out whether we can get the data. On our first call to LaCie, they sent a new power cord, which was not the problem. After the second series of calls to LaCie, explaining exactly what we had and what the problem is, they sent a new unit. BUT IT WOULD NOT READ THE OUR HARD DRIVES. "Oh," LaCie said, "they're not compatible, and we don't have your unit any more." (it was new enough to be on warranty.) We're now looking for last year's copy of the raid drive that might be able to open our drives, before sending the drives to a $1400+ data recovery company. Our local tech says Lacie's often fail because of overheating. There is a place in them for a fan, but Lacie does not install one. I gave five stars for the design of the outside of the case.

Not as easy as the WD Passport to set up, but after losing 2 of those to 1 foot falls, I refuse to buy them anymore. Not to mention the data lost because I don't have $550 to recover a single drive. I had one of the first LaCie Rugged drives. 40GB. I remember when that was HUGE! I still have it and it still works, so I hope that this works just the same, but with security software!
