It seemed to be a great small compact disk and quiet. However after backing up 350GB for a new computer swap it developed an intermittent thermal failure which caused it to drop and request reformatting. I think the USB interface was culprit or possibly just a loose internal cable. It would run ten minutes then fail. I had to resort to keeping in freezer so it would not quit. With this this technique I was able to transfer off what I needed. Had I not been able to do this I might have lost all my photos. Strangely one time I forgot it was in the freezer and it got so cold it would not start. After I warmed it a bit it ran perfectly and the thermal problem seem to be cured as it ran at room temperature just fine. However I did not trust it so returned it in my 30 day exchange time. So it gets a 5* for looks, feel of sturdiness, & compactness but a one for reliability hence my 3* rating as this may have been a one in a thousand incident so I can't condemn this model totally. See if others report this problem.

I've had this hard drive for almost a year now. I have to set the hard drive at a very particular position and angle, or else, the hard drive continually disconnects. So if i walk past it and accidentally touch the cable, 90% of the time it will disconnect. Also, the end of the cable that hooks to the hard drive is very weak. Just to demonstrate the weakness, you can hold the cable by the usb port and the hard drive will fall within 3 seconds. The harddrive is sturdy though. It is metal, so I don't really worry about it being squished like you do with plastic harddrives.I would rather get a plastic one with a sturdy cable.

Looks great is noisy but completely let down by support. I have 2 of these both plugged into a regulated power supply. First power adaptor went 8 weeks ago (and it was a replacement for another that went pop!!!), followed by the second 3 weeks later. I have 3 other smaller cheaper hard drives that i have used (and continue to use) more intensely and they are still fine. In fact i can't recall another electrical product where the power supply has failed once let alone twice. Yet la cie refuse to cover this because both HDs were over a year old. What i find odd is that they invest in making the product appear to look like a robust piece of kit, then sell it with (and continue to sell despite the well evidenced issues) a power supply that clearly doesn't work.very bizarre - at best!Essentially don't buy unless you are looking for a shiny paper weight!

I bought this because I was in the process of transferring all my personal files from my work computer (PC) to my soon to be MacBook Pro, since I didn't own a laptop at home. I had no problem transferring any files over from the PC nor into the Mac. It was very easy to use, and even though I don't have USB 3.0 on either the PC or Mac, the transfer speed was still pretty good.

I have now bought two LaCie external drives and never again. You are paying a premium for the nicely designed case. Don't do it. It's the same hard drives other products use. And it wasn't the hard drives that failed. It was the circuit board. The other LaCie I bought rattled when the disk was spinning so badly that I finally took it apart and wedged a piece of plastic in it to stop the rattling. Some superior design!!What's the point of paying a higher price than Western Digital or Maxtor if the product is no better, or even worse. Because of a cool design? I've now bought about four WDs without a single problem. DON'T BUY LACIE!!

As someone with an HDMI Mac mini hooked to my HDTV, I have tons and tons of media. To store it all, and to keep from thrashing the mini's laptop-caliber hard drive to death, I've been using external hard drives. This has led to a mess of cords, a bunch of drives to manage, and knowing that one day one of those drives is going to fail. With mechanical hard drives, it's not a question of "if" it will fail, but "when."You have to have good backups, but for keeping your data available at all times--even in the event of a hard drive failure--RAID is a very nice thing to have. So I went looking for a FireWire 800 RAID unit, and the LaCie 4big Quadra kept coming up. I've owned quite a few LaCie products in the past, having been a fan of their design and commitment to the Mac platform. But their drives always seemed to fail faster than they should. Some good reviews of this unit, coupled with the fact that it has dependable Seagate drives inside, made me go ahead and take the plunge. I am glad I did.RAID 5 is the perfect combination of data security and speed, and it's super easy to set the 4big Quadra to use RAID 5--your desired RAID level is a switch on the back! I am really enjoying having all my large media collection on one logical volume AND the peace of mind that a hard drive can fail and I'll still be in business until I can replace the drive.Speed, convenience, ease of setup and use...this LaCie product is a winner. While it costs quite a bit more than the equivalent amount of storage in external USB or FireWire drives, the protection of RAID more than makes up for the extra cost. Highly recommended for anyone who has a vast media collection on their computer that they don't ever want to be without.

We have an iMac with about 160GB HD. The drive has since filled with movies and songs and I was looking for a small, quiet, external USB 2.0 drive. This fits the bill. It is small and fits out of the way behind the computer. When the computer wakes up, so does this drive meaning that it is always ready to be accessed. There is no loud fan, and the spinning of the drive is hardly noticeable. A small blue light is all you really see. Installation took only a few moments and there were no hitches. The box gets slightly warm when being used. This supports USB 3.0, but I am using only USB 2.0, which is plenty fast to play movies and songs real time.So far, perfect and I would buy again. I did notice a $20 price jump from when I purchased it here just a few days ago. I might sit and watch the price and jump on it when it gets close to $100.

I own several LaCie disk drives, and I was content with LaCie until I needed to contact LaCie customer service. Then my opinion of LaCie degraded dramatically. Rather than describe my disappointing interchange with customer service, I'll refer you to the CustomerServiceScoreboard website where you can read that LaCie scores much lower than IOmega and Western Digital. If you want useful customer service, stay away from LaCie.

I purchased the LaCie 4big 6TB about a week ago. I am running on OS X 10.5.6. This unit is compact, quiet, and really good looking. Most importantly though, this drive can function in RAID 5 mode completely independent of a computer. No software RAID or RAID card required! Amazing. And did I mention it is about the size of a small sub woofer?I purchased this drive to have a safe home storage solution. I needed something that was RAID 5, and didn't require a computer to function. I wanted something that I could hook up to my Airport Extreme Base Station, and use as a wireless network Time Machine backup drive for OS X. In addition, I wanted something that could perform really fast over a hard wire connection, if I needed it to. This drive does all that perfectly.Out of the box the unit is formatted for RAID 0. If you would like to use it as a RAID 5 device, you will need to reset the drive to the new setting. Make sure to read the manual for this process. It requires holding the front button a certain way to make your new settings stick. Keep in mind that you will lose all data on the drive when you do this, including the partition itself.Once I had the unit formatted for RAID 5, I partitioned it as a single GUID OS X Extended (journaled) disk. This gave me 4.1 usable TB of storage. I chose this format specifically so that I could hook it up to Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS), and use it as a Time Machine backup drive for OS X. This is the only format that works properly with the AEBS, the 4big, and Time Machine. (That said, if you wanted to use this drive for other functions, it is quite versatile, offering a ton of RAID modes, and full PC support.)After I formatted the drive, I expected there to be a wait time while the RAID 5 built itself. That said, there didn't appear to be any at all! The drive just seemed to be RAID 5, with no build time or degraded read/write speed at all. I could be wrong, but it appears that fresh formats are ready to go instantly. Pretty amazing really. After that, I tested the drive on all the different connections. I was getting real world speeds that maxed out the throughput of FireWire 400, FireWire 800, and USB 2.0 respectively. Even eSata performed remarkably well, coming in around 125MB a second. No slow Drobo garbage here. This unit is BLAZING FAST.Since then, I've copied about 1TB of data to the unit. I've also set it up as a Time Machine backup over my AEBS. It seems to function perfectly. I've had no issues at all (knock on wood). It mounts quickly, and runs fast and quiet.I do have a couple gripes about the drive, but they're really minimal. Honestly, these have more to do with the way RAID functions than with the 4big. That said, I will point them out:One thing that bugs me is that the unit has a really slow low power sleep mode. The power switch has 3 modes: ON, AUTO, and OFF. When set to AUTO, I was hoping for a fast low power mode, that would allow the unit to rest while not being used, and also allow the drive to awaken quickly from sleep. When set to AUTO on the power switch: If the Mac get's shut down, or goes to sleep, the drive DOES GO INTO A LOW POWER MODE. BUT, at this point the unit is basically OFF. The problem is that the entire unit has to restart once your Mac turns back on. 4 drives have to spin up, one after the other. So you're looking at 30-45 seconds of down time before the drive comes back online if you use the AUTO mode. Also, if the drive is connected to your machine in this AUTO mode, the unit will power down if not in use after aprox 3 mins. Again, you will need to wait for it to turn back on when you go to access the drive. This can be annoying, so you will need to weigh the tradoff of how fast you need to access your media vs the low power mode. This isn't really a big deal though, since this is a 6TB RAID, and it already is whisper quiet. It's just something to keep in mind if you're using this as a home server.I leave my unit on all the time, so none of this is an issue for me.All that said, I give this unit 5/5 stars. There really is nothing like it out there on the market right now.If you need a fast, reliable, computer independent RAID solution, this is the drive for you!02-09-09 Update:I love this unit. In fact, I talked the company I work for into buying two of these drives for backup. As of now, I've setup and tested 3 of these devices, and they have all performed flawlessly. I've already filled both of the work drives (8TB @ raid 5), and can report that there is no loss in performance, even when the raids are almost totally full! Really great work LaCie!

We are on our second HD... first one broke after a few months... this replacement they sent us (after many phone calls) broke in less than a week. It might be a MAC formatting issue? Does LaCie care about macs? We have had 6 failed LaCie drives in the past 3 years (out of a total of about 12 -- WOW!) Why do I keep buying them. Gosh, I don't know!!!!

I've got five of these drives in various sizes, along with a bunch of other brands, in my small media-oriented business.Exactly one of them has failed. That was after two years of daily heavy use. AND IT WASN'T THE LACIE COMPONENTS THAT DIED.The internal mechanism inside - a Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM - got some critical errors. Seagate is a good reliable brand. After determining that it couldn't be fixed with software, I pulled the mechanism... about a three minute task, requiring just a Phillips screwdriver. I then replaced it with a new Seagate internal with identical specs (Amazon, ~$50). LaCie's parts - power supply, logic board, Firewire/SATA/USB i/o - came right back up. Formatted the new Seagate, and ran automated "stress test" of random read/writes of 10MB files for ten minutes: perfect.--It's been said "All hard drives have either failed or are about to fail". That's why we make backups. Considering all we're trying to put on those tiny magnetic disks, and what we subject them to, I'm surprised at how few failures we see...Despite the failure, I'd buy this model again. Except I don't have to... changing the internal Seagate gave me a brand-new drive for 1/3 the cost.

This is my 4th LaCie Rikki drive. I use them for backups and travel because they are really small and (so far!) reliable. I hate the power adapters that you have to use with desktop drives, and these of course don't require them. They are not fast drives, so if you need 7200 PRM speed for digital video, etc., look elsewhere. But for basic backup and portable storage, they are fantastic. I also bought the LaCie "Coat" case for each drive, a nice padded bag with a little pouch for a short USB cable. I also like the style of both Rikki and Coat, although style is secondary to me for these kinds of things.
