LaCie never ceases to amaze me... I received this drive and plugged it in to remove the typical stuff LaCie installs on their hard drives but wasn't able to do that immediately. Right when I plugged in the drive to my Macbook Pro (early 2011 running OSX Lion 10.7) it popped up the normal LaCie application but when clicking on it to format the drive it pops up an error stating that PowerPC applications are no longer supported... lets all give a big round of applause to LaCie. Luckily the fix is easy and instead of simply formatting the Volume of the hard drive like you would normally do you have to format the hard drive and then you have to format the volume using the OSX Disk Utility. I wrote an article that can be found at the below URL for anyone not familiar with the Disk Utility.[...]Hope that helps someone. Other than the fact that LaCie never fails to mess their products up I actually like the hard drive itself hence the three rating. If the HDD was somewhat questionable it would have been even lower than a 3 but since the hard drive is solid I only took two stars away for LaCie being LaCie.

I got two of these yesterday.The first impression was pretty good. It's smaller than my other 2TB USB 3.0 external drive, a WD. Also, it comes with several adapters for the power supply, so you can plug it in wherever you travel. Neat invention, even if it doesn't really add any value for me personally.When I plugged it in, it showed up in Windows, as expected. However, when I tried copying something to it, I got "drive is full". It turns out it had a capacity of 10MB, not 2TB. OK, don't panic, read the manual. The manual consists of a few lines of text, basically saying plug it in and run start.exe from it.If you want more, they kindly supply the same info in German and Chinese and other languages too, LOL.OK, I ran start.exe, got the error "this software cannot run on Windows XP". Time to panic.No, not really. Go to Disk Management, remove the 10MB partition, create a 1.81TB partition, select quick format. All in all, the drive was perfectly functional within 5 minutes. It's just a bit scary at first, especially if you've never used Disk Management. I understand they needed a partition so they can ship their start.exe without including a CD for it, but why not make the partition have 1.81TB already???Can't comment on the software, since it won't run on my OS. I'm guessing it's some sort of backup solution, and I never needed one.I can't comment on how it works in USB 3 mode either, since my PC doesn't have that yet. In theory, it should be almost 10 times faster than in USB 2 mode. Anyway, in USB 2 mode, I copied 500 GB (of large files) to it in 6 hours, which is slightly faster than I got with the WD drive, using the same computer and a very similar set of files.As far as noise is concerned - I could hear the drive from time to time, very faintly, and it was sitting about two feet from my ear. Most of the time you can't hear it at all even if it's writing. I'd say the WD wins here, since I couldn't hear that one at all, ever, but still very good results here.The drive itself and the power adapter were a bit warm, after 6 hours of continuous writing. I'd guess 45 degrees Celsius, with room temperature around 25 degrees Celsius. That's just as good as the WD, and I'm quite happy with these results.The drive has an annoying blue light. This means I can't put it near the monitor, or I'll have to tape something over it. Not really a problem, but still it would have been smarter to make the light less powerful and/or put it in the back.

This drive is slim, light, fast, and very durable. Lacie keeps making them smaller and lighter! USB 3.0 is faster than Firewire, even in a USB 2.0 port. Great for travelling as it doesn't have an external power cord.

The product is great.. a little heavy with the rubber, but it's totally protected. Pretty fast drive. I opted for the lesser gig version so that I could get the 7200 speed. Not sure how quick the 5400 is, but I just transfered 250 gigs, was fast enough for me, being the hefty amount of gig being transfered. For transferring stuff under 10 gigs, it's a very decent speed. It's working great so far, haven't tested it on the road, but I have faith, it feels very solid.I have a macbook pro and on the set up of this drive they give an option to partition it so that you can read and write for both mac and pc. They only allow 33 gigs for this partition, but this is fine for what I need, and I like that that was an option. I was going to get a 3rd party app to read and write for both mac and pc for the whole drive but now I don't think I need to.

Pretty good product. Super easy set-up program that lets you designate partitions, or format it to one OS or another. Easy to format without the set-up. Using as a time-machine back-up, and so far, so good!

The size is impressive. The brushed metal cover gives the hard drive a sophisticated look, and it is so easy to use! I highly recommend it if you are interested in a small, portable hard drive.

Have two of these mounted in the available LaCie rack. They have both worked without any problems. Use one as my time machine backup for my 2TB iMac and the other as a network drive on my wireless. I am very pleased. Read and write times are fast and the drives are silent. I also purchased the extended warranty from LaCie which is something I would highly recommend.

I purchased this when I got my new MacBook Air after a lot of indecision and it has worked excellently. I was able to back up all the files from my Windows computer and put them on MBA with no problems what so ever. The seller was very prompt and the product was very well priced and arrived on time.
