I have always been a big fan of LaCie products but three recent purchase have changed that. Two USB 3.0 external hard drives that I recently bought, a LaCie Minimus 2 TB and a 1TB Rikiki USB 3.0 have both had failures of the input where the cable attach to the hard drive case.At first the drives would sporadically unmount for no reason. Then the connection on the Rikiki completely failed.I needed the data on the Rikiki immediately and was forced to extract the internal drive from it which voided the warranty. The Minimus 2TB is still in use but if it is moved, even slightly, the plug will lose its connection to the computer. My contact with LaCie leeds me to believe that they are aware of this problem but are evasive about it.I'm very sad to see a company that produces such beautifully designed products fall so short on what's inside.I hope they realize the mistake and make corrections but I can't take a chance with their drives again.By the way, the hard drive, when remove from the case, was a Western Digital, which works fine. The third product is the LaCie eSATA Hub Thunderbolt. It has issues too:-(

Around summer 2011, I decided I needed to buy all new parts for a custom computer. Everything seemed to be going along smoothly, but I was having a lot of problems trying to find a decent external hard drive. With the flooding in Taiwan, it seemed like just about every decent hard drive out there was either lacking some features, or cost an arm and a leg (and had quality problems). So after the new computer was completely built (with a 128GB SSD to get by), a friend recommended I look at LaCie externals. I finally gave in and got the minimus, and so far... couldn't be happier.First... it is TINY. Think trashy paperback romance novel size.Next... it's fast. I haven't taken the time to run any benchmarks, but after using a USB2.0 external on my last system, I can instantly see a huge speed increase on this little guy. Initially, I was set on trying to find an external with eSATA, but that only made my hard drive quest that much harder. I honestly don't think I'll care that I "settled" for USB3.0 here. Also, it doesn't feel like it could cook an egg on it or anything, even after working for hours. I've tried running (Steam) games and Photoshop work off it, and after a few hours it just feels warm. Not even "fresh coffee from Starbucks" warm. I mean like "dog belly after laying on the sunny spot on the carpet" warm, if that.Setup was very quick and painless. By the time it went through its default installation, 1.8TB was free for my storing-and-dancing pleasures. Not too shabby. (And on the off-chance someone is concerned about this... there are no weird programs/applications you have to use for transferring files.)The hardware itself seems very solid. It looks great, and the brushed aluminum is very aesthetically pleasing. The little blue power light won't illuminate any rooms if you're the kind of person that leaves your techie stuff running late into the early-morning hours. All in all... this little external is fantastic. Hope this helps any of you looking to get some new storage space!

I own 4 other LaCie drives and didn't expect trouble, so unfortunately I didn't test it as soon as I got it. I was having a bunch of super 8 home movies converted into digital files and needed a drive for the vendor to backup to. But when the files where ready, I plugged in the disk - just to register it - and it wouldn't mount. In fact, it made a screeching noise and went quiet. After replugging it in, it made a quiet beeping noise, which I've since learned signals a DEAD disk. Well, just great. It was too late to return it to the Amazon seller so I emailed LaCie. After a few "form" responses, I was told to call about shipping it back. It's still under warranty, but I'm not sure what good that does. They keep trying to get me to "upgrade" the warranty. Why, I don't know. It NEVER worked and I want a new one! SIMPLE. But, now I have to pay to ship it back to them. Not happy at all about that...Meanwhile, I have to go buy another disk to use for my project. I'm going to try Western Digital this time!

LaCie drives generally get good reviews as being high quality products and that's what you expect for the higher than usual price, even on Amazon. I bought the drive to use primarily as a backup drive for use with Time Machine which seems to work fine. But I have three issues with the drive: First, it requires a power supply plugged into the wall. Most drives at this price draw their power from the USB 3.0 port and do not require a separate power supply. Second, it is about twice the size of other 2 TB drives. Third, it is loud. I have a 2 TB drive in my iMac which I cannot hear unless I really put my ear to it whereas, I can hear the LaCie from across the room. As long as it does not break down then I consider that it's okay.

I bought this drive and it failed in 1st month. I talked to my other friends and several of them have same issue with the drive. The defect is tht the drive autimaticaly create bad sector after partitiation. You can not even access the data after that. Ther drive is still in warrantly. I asked Lacie for support and in return I got a reference to third party for paid service in recovering the data. I strongly suggest to stay away from Lacie if you have important data storage. The driver for the Lacie are unstable and have extensive quality issue.Look at Drivecrash ad with Lacie drives

Got this and put it to work right away. All I had trouble with was getting it out of the box, which that just meant cutting the tape. LOL.I recommend this drive for backups or for everyday external storage. It is compact in size, very easy to use and the rubber bumper that is on it, it's really thick and cushiony, so if you drop this drive, you won't kill it, like you would with a standard 3.5 harddrive.

This device was touted by a pro photographer in a photo seminar that I took. I'm using this as a backup device when in the field or traveling. A bit more complicated to set up than my other backup devices but it seems rugged as hell. I've had problems with other backup storage devices at the connector - that always seems to be a weak point. This one looks good there and has worked fine so far.

CompactCons:No cons, but Lacie is always expensive than Seagate or WD. But everyone knows that we have to spare some extra for Quality. In future I may get Lacie 3TB. I think I am not going to change my mind for any other brands.Cheers.

I paid way too much for this drive in December of 2010 and it worked for about a year. After that year, it started ejecting itself every so often. I'd be working off the drive and suddenly I'd get a dialogue window saying it had been improperly ejected. I'd lose my autosave files and I'd have to re-render my entire project which took hours. I thought it was a faulty cable, but apparently not- I saw another reviewer who had bought a replacement cable and still had problems with it. More recently, in the summer of 2012, the drive started showing up as a folder named "LaCie" on the desktop. By then it was too late. I double clicked on the folder and it wouldn't open. I pulled it up in Finder and it wouldn't open. Now every time I plug it in, I get a dialogue saying I've inserted a disk that is unreadable by this computer. Using this as my primary drive was a mistake. I lost a TON of data when it died. I replaced it with a Seagate GoFlex drive which I've been using for about 6 months now, and I absolutely love it. I'll never buy LaCie again.

I've used LaCie drives for decades. But this small drive has Cable faults. Instead of being rugged as advertised it's as fragil as egg shells.. I"m still using it but I am very careful attaching the cable and feel I must use care not to keep the cable on when not in use.So if y?u are like me and expect stuff to work in tough conditions and hold up for years, this is not as advertised.

I chose the 1 TB Model.+ The speed is really good, with up to 120 MB/s i am able to work directly off the drive.+ Size: This drive is really small. It fits nearly everything+ Design/quality: The drive is built very solidly. The design is beautiful and will fit on nearly any desk. It is robust, and you can feel the quality.+ Prize: The price is incredibly low for such a high quality producto Software: The software in my eyes is neither positive nor negative. It works just fine, but id rather lose the additional drivers. i liked the time when drives were just drives and had no pre-installed software on them.- Cable: I went for a 3rd party cable for 2 reasons. The important reason is, that the cable was too short for my desk. The second is, that it is very stiff, i could not align it as i wanted. Conclusion:I can highly recommend this product. Some of you might need to buy an additional longer cable, but this is hardly a big negative point. Everything else is quite perfect and has fully deserved a 5* rating!

We purchased two of the Quadra 500GB external drives for file storage in 2009. They weren't cheap but they were considered the best for storage. Storage is supposed to be something you can get to 3 mos, 1 year, 2 years, 3 yars from the time you store it. These drives fail on that front. They worked for a few months but after that it has been a complete hassle. Inconsistent performance, access...to now failure to recognize drives. Can't get to files. Lacie's current desktop manager and drivers fail to recognize the drive but cause usb port issues. The desktop manager is not recognizing the drive, Lacie Support has been dismal to none. A company in storage who is asking you to trust their product to store your data should have a stable product that works and provide safe, reliable support for their products from the time it is sold to now. Steer clear of the Lacie products if you want to get to your data..

In February 2012, I purchased a Lacie rugged mini 1TB USB 3 external hard drive on Lacie's reputation for quality. I used this drive normally and treated it with the normal care for external hard drives (e.g., no jarring or removing the cable without waiting for the drive to properly shut down). Good quality and worked great. In September of 2012, the USB 3 mini connector on the drive became inconsistent. I would have to adjust or wiggle the cable connection on the drive in order for the drive to turn on. Naturally, this makes the problem worse and now the drive doesn't respond at all. I contacted Lacie for warranty work, and they agreed to repair the drive. Part of the normal repair process is a complete format or they may send you a different, refurbished drive. Needless to say, after 8 months of use, 100% data loss.

When working, this hard drive was ok. I used it in my living room connected to my HTPC but the unit's fan was way too noisy (easily the loudest hard drive I have ever purchased) and the bright blue button was way too distracting. So I placed it inside a fan-cooled cabinet and everything worked fine for about 1.5 years. All of a sudden, the device started to fail (though the drives themselves were seemingly ok) as the lights would blink red indicating some sort of hardware issue. LaCie made me pay to send the drive back to them under warranty (not good) and I got back a refurbished unit which had the same issue. We went through this same process of them replacing the entire unit about 2-3 more times until I finally got a working one (thankfully I didn't have to pay for shipping these subsequent instances). About a year and a half later (coincidentally right after the warranty expired), the drives start making sounds like they are failing and/or constantly rebuilding the RAID array. So I just gave up on them, transferred my data, and do not plan to ever purchase a LaCie RAID external hard drive ever again. Just didn't really trust the unit anymore to faithfully store and maintain my backups.
