Works most of the time on PCs, desktops & laptops, I still have to fidget with everytime I plug it in to stop the beeping; been a problem since I got it, but I lost my receipt and couldn't return it. Works on Mac desktop, not on laptop... anymore. It use to... Formatted for Mac & PC. I want my files! Worse xhd ever!!! Stop beeping :(

After having one fail on us within months of owning it, we couldn't fork up the $500 they quoted us over the phone to recover the data. So Lacie replaced it with a brand new hard drive since it was still covered under warranty. The same problem occurred in both drives where the port in the back of the hard drive had somehow come loose, which then makes it impossible for the usb cable to fully plug into the port. We were sure to be extremely careful this time around by removing the usb cable from the hard drive every time we were traveling with it to avoid any tension on the port and the tip of the usb cable. I made sure to gently plug the usb cable in the port the correct way every time. And yet, the port has somehow manage to come loose again. So we're left here with a dead drive and no photos from our week vacation in Colorado! This is the last time we ever purchase another Lacie product.

I am very happy with this hard drive. I was looking for the most compact and lightweight 1 TB external hard drive to use on my long travels where every gram in the backpack counts. This one was the most lightweight I could find.The hard drive looks very nice, it is smaller than I expected and has worked just fine so far. I am using it with a MacBook Pro and formatted it using Disk Utility so I am not using the provided software, which in fact could not run under MacOS 10.7 when I tried before formatting.When I try using the hard drive with an extension USB cable, the hard drive makes weird sounds (you can see videos on youtube regarding this). My guess is that it does not get enough power with an extension cable. On the other hand, this problem does not occur when using only the provided USB cable, which fits perfectly on the side of the drive. Although this cable is inconveniently short and using an extension cable is problematic, I like the way the provided cable can stay attached all the time (both protecting the USB port on the drive and the cable itself while rolling around in my backpack) so I am giving it 5 stars.Note: There is a lot of missing or wrong information about the weight and size of hard drives on Amazon - it took hours to find the information and compare the different options - Amazon and the manufacturers should work on this issue.

7200 RPM drives are needed for any and all multimedia applications (audio, video, pictures, etc.). This drive is great! Portable, High speed USB 3.0, compatible with PC or MAC, shock resistant, and the Lacie brand/quality that multimedia users have trusted for years = what else could you want?Some people say they want a 1TB drive...ok so buy two? At $89 these are a steal.

I don't know why other people have had issues with their hard drive. But this device has performed flawlessly. And I have dropped it multiple times and I have not had any issues what so ever. I now buy all external hard drives/ thumb drives from them all well.

This is a very dependable hard drive. We have had several over the years, and they are all still working. Given our experience with some other brands, this is meant as high praise.

Funnily enough, this unit is physically smaller than my LaCie 500 gig HD. They both seem to work just fine.

I've had this unit for more than 3 years now, and it has worked great that whole time. I think I've replaced 3 disks in that time, which I think is a very reasonable number of failures. It runs continuously on my Mac Pro, and is dedicated to Apple's Time Machine, which works great.

This LaCie external hard drive seems to be capable. However, when I went to install the drive on my computer, I began with the included startup file. The installation process began, but "hung" and never finished. I tried again with the same result. I tried it on another computer with the same result. So I had to go into the device manager of Windows 7 and expand the empty partition, leaving only the small partition with the installation commands. I assume I accomplished what the included installation would have, but can't be sure. I timed the transfer of 24 Gb of documents and pictures to the drive from my computer and found the speed was only 50% faster when plugged into the USB 3.0 port vs. the USB 2.0 port of my computer. Is the lack of much higher speed for 3.0 due to my new, "hot-rod" HP computer with an Intel i7 processor, etc. or the LaCie? I don't know, but it does work reliably. The 3-foot cable is short, but I like the on-off switch.

I chose this rating because this is what I was looking for.It is heavy duty and fit just right for what I needed it for.Light weight and easy to connect, disconnect and carry on.Also the price is right.I recommend it.

I mean it look styliush and strong but no performance. Before this hard drive I was using WD usb 2.0 nothing wrong with it and transfer data between 28-32mb per sec. Very disappointed. Bought what I thought was a 500gb to back up as a mirror image on carbonite. Opened the factory sealed box. Low and behold the drive was 300gb. I had to send it back.

Item was a little bigger than I thought, as "mini" doesn't really quite justify its size - it's about the standard size for La Cie. However, it's a great external drive and very simple to use.

I research everything to death before making a major purchase and while this was less than $100 and not really a major purchase monetarily, it will be my back up drive for my life, I mean my laptop! It is perfect. Thank you!
