I'm a filmmaker working with all digital workflow. I figured this RAID drive would be an excellent way to backup my raw footage while working on multiple projects. For the past 2 years I have been using this drive for exactly this purpose. The drive was configured for a RAID 5 to get the most out of storage/redundancy ratio.The drive was rarely in use, and was mainly used for archiving raw footage.One night, I left it running overnight to transcode some footage. The next day the footage was transferred. I turned the drive off. The next day,the volume wouldn't mount. The computer couldn't see the drive, regardless of which port or computer it was connected to. The University IT department could get no footage off of it. A private company could get no data recovered. Even though the drive is still under warranty, Lacie will not refund the money as the drive technically still "works," but how could I possibly trust it?! They call it a "soft failure". I call it a disaster.I lost over 2 years of raw video footage on a drive I purchased because I thought it would be safe. Perhaps I'm the fool. Perhaps this drive is a POS?DO NOT BUY

I bought one of these 2.5 years ago and I am returning the 3rd warrantee replacement unit because it failed. This only reflects part of the history, however; the transformers have also been replaced 3 times. If you are using RAID 1 for protection and the data becomes corrupted during a bad write because the unit is failing, all drives will have damaged data. Added to this, if the original replaceable drive sleds were 500gb, LaCie will not support replacing that drive with LaCie sleds of a different (i.e. bigger) capacity EVEN IF THEY ARE SLEDS FOR THAT MODEL DRIVE. They only mention that if you ask when things have gone wrong.I now distrust any external drive with a cheap transformer (wall wart) in general and LaCie drive in particular. I gave them and extra star for their support but, really, they have cost me data so 1-star would have worked too.

I just wanted to let people know that, even though one reviewer has reported that his MacBook Pro didn't provide the drive with enough energy, I have no problems whatsoever.I have the drive connected to my mid-2009 Core2Duo MBP through the USB3 cable that came with the drive. The computer only has USB2 ports and both of them provide the drive with all the energy it needs.As for speed, there isn't much I can say, since I have USB2 ports only. I didn't benchmark it, but it certainly seems as speedy as it gets with USB2.The drive is small in size and looks and feels very good. Build quality is excellent. The cable that came with it is quite sturdy and I don't think it will risk breaking in all of the drive's lifetime.The aluminum casing is a nice addition to the drive. I'd definitely buy other LaCie drives in the future.The only con is that when I plugged the drive in, a Finder window popped up telling me to double click on some sort of setup assistant, but the app was for PowerPC computers only. Not a big problem, since I just fired up Disk Utility to partition and format the drive -- and get rid of the useless app in the process! ;)

It is simple, this devices broke and the technical service did not help at all. I cannot recommend this or any other devie from this brand.

I travel a lot for work, so I need to make sure all my files are backed up and safe. I take this drive with me when I travel - it's pretty rugged, and it's password protected - so I feel pretty safe when I have all my files on it!

It's a snap to install. If you set it to sleep after not being accessed for awhile it's a little slow to wake up. Otherwise it is quite rapid on both rear and write.

I was worried it would not function on my MAC with USB 2.0 or that I was going to have to buy extra cables but that was not the case. It worked very well and have been using it a lot!Pros:-Small and compact.-Have dropped it while it was running and it still works.-Arrived within 2-3 days.-Can reformat to Fat32 (ideal if you are going to use to play videos/movies)-No need for Power sourceCons:-I wish there was one with more memory.

I used this drive for 3 years before it failed. The drive itself is covered under warranty, and I only have to pay return shipping back to Lacie. However, they told me data recovery was $1000+ (I think 13-something) performed by them. WTF! Are all data recovery services this expensive? They said I could go elsewhere, but it had to be a certified Class 1 clean room data recovery center. Really don't see the need for that when I can remove the HDD in my laptop in my apartment without any problems.

This is a very complete external hard drive. The design, the materials used to manufacture it, makes it one of the most strong hard drive. Even though I have only US 2.0 on my laptop, the transfer speed of this device exporting big files is excellent, compared to the increase I could obtained after buying a LaCie USB 3.0 Express Card 34 to become my USB 2.0 ports to USB 3.0 and that way take advantage of the speed. It would have a great performance also without this LaCie USB 3.0 Express Card 34, the USB 2.0 speed is amazing. It came preloaded with Genie Timeline software which allowed me to back up a lot GB's of data from my laptop about 400 GBs, and whenever I made a change or add anything new to my computer, it backs it up automatically in the background. Also with LaCie Destop Manager wich allows me to manage my LaCie Rikiki Superspeed 1 TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive. All the manual and instruction digitally preloaded in PDF Format, with Instructions on the box for a quick formatting and installation. As an extra bonus 10 GBs of LaCie WUALA for starting backing up on the Cloud. I did a lot of research before buying this brand and model, and after getting it and using it I am very satisfied. Thanks Amazon for selling it to me, and LaCie for designing it and manufacturing it. Something else, their Customer Support is one of the best I ever had. I went to the Apple Store on 5th Ave looking for this item after seeing it on Amazon. I like to touch things before I buy them, of course. They did not have the drive on hand, so I went to TekServe on 23rd, bless their hearts, and they had one in stock, and on SALE! I snapped it up with the quickness and backed up my Macbook Pro, and all was saved. The drive is sexy, sturdy, quiet, and doesn't get hot. I already know that I might lose the USB 3.0 cable, so perhaps I will order another soon......Way to go LaCie, sexy drives, for sexy people!
