I am on my second Lacie Quadra 1 TB and what a piece of garbage this thing is.First, the poor design. This is the reason why I am on my second Lacie Quadra. The outer shell of this drive is a giant clunky and heavy metal heat sync. This would be a fine design choice if the drive had rubber feet to absorb impact from setting it down and friction to keep it from sliding. Instead, what Lacie supplies you with are these two rubber bars that slide into one of the heat sync slots. When I used these bars, they would slip out or roll off when I would pick up the device or set it down so I took them off. One day, the device slid off of of my desk and onto the floor when I accidentally set my hand down on the USB chord. The drive was rendered useless.Second, customer support. This is the only reason why I give this device 2 stars instead of 1. Although, the above incident was in fact my own fault, Lacie still honored their 3 year warranty (you'll be using this) and supplied me with a new one. However, they did do A LOT of beating around the bush before sending it to me and it took me about 3 weeks of forum chatting with tech support before I actually received my next one. Finally, longevity. Lesson learned with the old hard drive, I decided to tape this new one down to my desk with double sided tape and use it as a stationary external hard drive. I have had this one for 3 months now and I am already getting a loud humming and scraping sound with no mistreatment on my part. Although it is not the ominous click of death, any noise from a hard drive is bad news and I am experiencing failed file transfers and choppy media playback from the drive. The drive is on its last legs and since I already sent my warranty in to Lacie, I am out of luck on receiving yet another hard drive.Overall, poor design choices make this drive too heavy for its own good. It is clunky and unreliable. If you buy this, throw it straight into the garbage bin. This is the first time I have been compelled to write a review for any product in my life and I recommend that you stay far away from this product.

First I'll comment on the drive itself. Then I'll offer some suggestions for Mac users who have run into problems getting the blue shortcut button to work.Back in January I purchased a 1 TB D2 Quadra. I was and still am extremely satisfied with that drive, so when I needed another I bought the 1.5 TB D2 that is the subject of this review. The 1 TB unit was whisper quiet. To my dismay, when I hooked up the 1.5 TB drive it made a soft whirring sound as if it had a fan inside it. I exchanged it for another through Amazon. (They cross-ship with next-day delivery, which is great.) The replacement drive may be a little quieter, but in all honesty, the sound it makes is barely noticeable. And because I use the drive solely for Time Machine backups, it's not spinning that much anyway. Moving on to the positives: The heavy ribbed aluminum case is beautifully made. The drive sits rock-solid in its vertical stand. The drive has a three-way on/off switch with an "automatic" position that spins down the drive when your computer goes to sleep. Even if the drive is fully powered off, it nonetheless passes power through to any upstream devices in your Firewire chain. And I just *love* the look of the blue shortcut buttons on my two Quadras softly glowing side by side! About those shortcut buttons... The first thing to do is make sure you have the most current software installed. The installation disks in the product box of many drives contained v1.2.4 of the LaCie ShortCut Button software. v1.2.4 is incompatible with Snow Leopard. In early March LaCie posted v.1.2.5 on its web site. v1.2.5 is Snow Leopard-compatible. You'll get a message about System Preferences needing to restart in 32-bit mode, but just click through it. The installation will take and you will be able to assign an application to the button. For me, though, that wasn't the end of the story. Frequently, pressing the button wouldn't launch the assigned application. When I'd look in the shortcut button preferences pane, the assignment would be gone. I'd reassign the application, but the misbehavior would eventually recur. I began to suspect that the application assignment wasn't holding between restarts. What solved the problem for me was to add a component of the shortcut button software to my login items. To do this, open the Accounts preference pane and select an administrator account. Click the Login Items button to open the Login Items panel. Click the + button beneath the list of login items and navigate to the following file: Your Hard Drive/Application Support/LaCie/LaCieShortcutButtonDaemon.app. Click Add and you're done. After I went through this process the shortcut buttons worked perfectly. Also, the software is intelligent enough to distinguish between the two drives. The shortcut button on one drive launches Carbon Copy Cloner; the shortcut button on the other launches System Preferences. Everything is now copacetic in hard drive-land!

I purchased this online and received very quickly in few days except the weekends. It works fast enough to put files in it. And I like the color and size too.

well, if you have an OS or 10.6.8 or OLDER, you shouldnt have too many issues getting this one going. I happen to update my OS every few years so I have 10.7.1After working to download the "installed" software for about 30 minutes (thinking "seriously, why is this so hard?"), I called customer support..(have to register an account, get email to validate before you can get the friggin #) and told them the problem.I was told 10.6.8 (I think) and NEWER you can't use the installed software and just have to use Disk Utility to erase the drive (turn it into a big thumb drive). Ok problem solved. Once I erased it, Time Machine recognized it and it started to work. Great ! About 3 hours later, I saw smoke coming from the back of the unit. nice.Contacted suport again, who reminded me it may or may cost $14.95 for support (what a greeting, huh?... guess they have a few Apple run-a-ways over there) who told me to return it to Amazon, or they could send one out with the "deposit/refund when you return" game. My other review was on another LaCie Hard Disk product I purchased the same day. It didnt smoke, but might has well have.I have been considering the $400 LaCie Thunderbolt 1TB Disk via Apple, but I've already spent $600 on these two and haven't backed up anything yet. This gets TWO stars for being Kardashian. Nice to look at, but just aren't gonna work for ya :)RIP Steve Jobs 10.05.11

Ужасно

I have had the 2Big 1 TB model for just over 2 years. It worked fine - until one day when it totally died. I asked Lacie support if it could be repaired - no. My model is no longer sold, so I asked what current model could accept my disks thinking I could buy a new one and be up and running. LaCie answer - none of the new models are compatible with the old (2 years!!) disk format. But they did offer to recover the data for $400 per disk. In searching this online I found I was not the only one who had this problem - it is common. The enclosures commonly fail after 2-3 years. What good is a RAID when the enclosure fails and the disk format is unique and not easily recoverable. (It can be recovered using LINUX or specialized tools, but requires effort and - taking the easy route - a software purchase. After this experience I WOULD NEVER BUY A LACIE PRODUCT AGAIN. If you do, once it fails (and it will) you will totally remember this review in your frustration.

The drive arrived on time and in great condition. Setup was very fast and easy to do, even for a computer idiot like myself. Transfer speeds on this drive are very fast. It makes no noise that I have heard so far. The only con I can see so far is that if left on for extended periods of time it will get pretty warm, but this has not seemed to cause any problems yet. I will be buying 1 or 2 more of these, never hurts to have more back ups.

I bought this drive to hold my large collection of music and pictures. It worked wonderfully right out of the box and I quickly went about transferring files from my computer and another, older LaCie drive. The next morning the drive wouldn't turn on! I finally narrowed the problem down to the power supply and was able to get it replaced. The drive works just fine with the new power supply but it was scary to have that happen with a brand new storage drive. Unfortunately, this is not the first time I've had a LaCie power supply fail. In the previous case LaCie had discontinued that supply and I was unable to get my drive working again. Now, it appears that they have made most of their products share the same power supply so at least these newer ones should be easy to acquire if one fails. The four LaCie drives I own have been rock-solid but the power supplies, not so much.

Received the 1 TB version 2 days ago and really like how solid built it is. Just don't like the fact that wheen logged in windows it does not recognize the drive. I don't get any options or anything at all. When I connect it through the 3.0 port, it does get power and I can feel the hard disk in the work, but no change on my computer screen. Even after installing the built in software I still don't see any change. However it does work normal through the 2.0 port and it totally works when I am logged in Ubuntu 10.10 (both 3.0 and 2.0 ports) and it really is faster when connected through 3.0 port. I am still doing my data backup, so I will do another review after a few days.Edit: After over 6 months of moderate use, its still doing really good. I am still not able to use the 3.0 port when logged in Win 7, but I never really tried hard enough since I switch between Win 7 and Linux all the time anyway. Also I have a Sony Vaio which are kind of picky anyway hardware-wise.

I was looking for weeks to buy an external portable hdd without tones of pre-installed software and of course power supply free. This unit was the last one on the BEST BUY shelf , priced as $113. I was surprised , when I paid $102/incl tax/.However, easy plug&play detection on my Win 7 x64, quick 1-st installation/format, cold body after days of using it, fast transfer even via USB 2,0. I'm using this nice storage non stop/24/7/for almost a month , and never had any issues. According to Lacie, this is the world's smallest portable hard drive! I would recommend this to anyone looking for simple external portable storage solution.

Warning to Mac users:I purchased one Lacie Big drive 18 months ago, another Lacie Big drive 24 months ago. I just upgraded to Mac OS X Lion. Neither drive works after the upgrade. The Lacie web site said that the "solution" to this problem was to revert back to Snow Leopard. Not really a solution. But I assumed that maybe this meant that a firmware upgrade or something was in the works. So I contacted Lacie support.Lacie support told me that the "version you have now is a legacy product, there is no update planned at this time to address the 10.7 [Lion] problem."An 18 month old, $1000+ external hard drive, is considered a "legacy product". You have to be kidding me.I don't often write reviews. And I'm really not writing this as a whiny complaint about an unfavorable support outcome. Just as a heads up to any potential Mac users. For a company to punt on supporting products less than two years old is outrageous. These drives should last several years at least. A company who touts it's Timemachine support, which is why I purchased the drive, needs to plan to support regular OS upgrades for years. They said they would offer me a discount on a replacement hard drive. I'll pass and buy a 3TB Time Capsule. At least I figure that one will continue working if the OS is updated.Frustrating. I you're a Mac user, stay away from Lacie. Ignore what they say about Timemachine support. It's not true.

I purchased this drive for travel so being completely USB powered is a big plus. No complaints, very quite operation and dependable so far. My only gripe is the cable that comes with the device; it's too short for most situations although the idea is great. It would have been better if the cord latched around three sides rather than the one - just a thought.

It seemed to be a great small compact disk and quiet. However after backing up 350GB for a new computer swap it developed an intermittent thermal failure which caused it to drop and request reformatting. I think the USB interface was culprit or possibly just a loose internal cable. It would run ten minutes then fail. I had to resort to keeping in freezer so it would not quit. With this this technique I was able to transfer off what I needed. Had I not been able to do this I might have lost all my photos. Strangely one time I forgot it was in the freezer and it got so cold it would not start. After I warmed it a bit it ran perfectly and the thermal problem seem to be cured as it ran at room temperature just fine. However I did not trust it so returned it in my 30 day exchange time. So it gets a 5* for looks, feel of sturdiness, & compactness but a one for reliability hence my 3* rating as this may have been a one in a thousand incident so I can't condemn this model totally. See if others report this problem.
