I bought this thing about 2 months ago and it works great! Smooth and fast response, great protection and great price. No complaints here.

Easy to use but I had to call Apple to reformat the software which didn't work with my MacBook Air. The cord to connect to computer is too short though.

I first want to point out that this USB3.0 device has a good backward compatibility. My PS3 can also recognize it, but well, definitely if formatted into FAT32.The hard drive itself is generally good. Rather compact for a 3.5" one. Aluminium case with plastic panels on the sides, inside which is a Seagate 3.5" hard drive which is mediocre but enough for normal use. Makes only a little noise when turned on or echoed from standby. You can set the time to enter the standby mode to save power using the Lacie software, but at the cost of a few seconds(a little slow) for wakening it up. The quick installing wizard is easy to use, which guides you to format the disk and register the product. You can chose the disk to be partly formatted into FAT32 which has maximum compatibility and partly into NTFS which does not have the 4GB single file limit(if you want to rip your blu-ray disc, this is important). Last but not least, the power adapter shipped with the hard drive has a very considerate design for international travelers. A few changeable plugs with different shapes makes it possible for the adapter to be fitted into outlets in different countries. Thus satisfied.

Small, quiet and dependable. Lacie hard drives have never failed me. Highly recommended! The only problem is you get only one chance to format the drive with the loaded software. If there is a glitch, you need to use Windows to format the drive but Lacie has responsive customer support to get you through the process.

This is a great little unit, although I'm on my second drive after a warranty replacement. The USB 3.0 connector to the drive is very flimsy, and failed completely on the drive about 8 months after I bought it. Lacie sent me a replacement under warranty (luckily the data was backed up) but I have to be careful to set the second one on my desk at work just so, so the cable makes a good connection to the drive. I would absolutely love the drive if they'd come up with a sturdier USB 3.0 connector.

This is a good one. I don't leave it connect all the time and use it like a zip drive. It works and doesn't get hot or even warm.

When pulling the Rikiki out of my bag, many friends have commented on how nice the hard drive looks with its sleek brushed aluminum. As other reviewers complained, the barely flexible, flat cable is too short. However, it's part of the aesthetic design that can easily be replaced by another USB cable out of your drawer. And the fact that this one can run on the single USB without extra power needed is convenient for use with my macbook. The drive makes audible sounds as the disc does its thing, making it one of the noisiest of these devices I've tried. This is the second LaCie external I've had (the first was a 320g Rugged) and both, unfortunately have failed. This one was totally my fault, though, having dropped the device on hard tile taking it out of my bicycle bag at least 8-10 times. Bad on me, do be careful handling that slick aluminum casing.

Product was received in record time and with every cord possible! I use the LaCie drives at work and at home. They are great for backing up my hard drives and being a graphic artist, I can store older designs on the drive and free up my computer.

LaCie never ceases to amaze me... I received this drive and plugged it in to remove the typical stuff LaCie installs on their hard drives but wasn't able to do that immediately. Right when I plugged in the drive to my Macbook Pro (early 2011 running OSX Lion 10.7) it popped up the normal LaCie application but when clicking on it to format the drive it pops up an error stating that PowerPC applications are no longer supported... lets all give a big round of applause to LaCie. Luckily the fix is easy and instead of simply formatting the Volume of the hard drive like you would normally do you have to format the hard drive and then you have to format the volume using the OSX Disk Utility. I wrote an article that can be found at the below URL for anyone not familiar with the Disk Utility.[...]Hope that helps someone. Other than the fact that LaCie never fails to mess their products up I actually like the hard drive itself hence the three rating. If the HDD was somewhat questionable it would have been even lower than a 3 but since the hard drive is solid I only took two stars away for LaCie being LaCie.

I got two of these yesterday. The first impression was pretty good. It's smaller than my other 2TB USB 3.0 external drive, a WD. Also, it comes with several adapters for the power supply, so you can plug it in wherever you travel. Neat invention, even if it doesn't really add any value for me personally. When I plugged it in, it showed up in Windows, as expected. However, when I tried copying something to it, I got "drive is full". It turns out it had a capacity of 10MB, not 2TB. OK, don't panic, read the manual. The manual consists of a few lines of text, basically saying plug it in and run start.exe from it.If you want more, they kindly supply the same info in German and Chinese and other languages too, LOL.OK, I ran start.exe, got the error "this software cannot run on Windows XP". Time to panic. No, not really. Go to Disk Management, remove the 10MB partition, create a 1.81TB partition, select quick format. All in all, the drive was perfectly functional within 5 minutes. It's just a bit scary at first, especially if you've never used Disk Management. I understand they needed a partition so they can ship their start.exe without including a CD for it, but why not make the partition have 1.81TB already???Can't comment on the software, since it won't run on my OS. I'm guessing it's some sort of backup solution, and I never needed one.I can't comment on how it works in USB 3 mode either, since my PC doesn't have that yet. In theory, it should be almost 10 times faster than in USB 2 mode. Anyway, in USB 2 mode, I copied 500 GB (of large files) to it in 6 hours, which is slightly faster than I got with the WD drive, using the same computer and a very similar set of files. As far as noise is concerned - I could hear the drive from time to time, very faintly, and it was sitting about two feet from my ear. Most of the time you can't hear it at all even if it's writing. I'd say the WD wins here, since I couldn't hear that one at all, ever, but still very good results here. The drive itself and the power adapter were a bit warm, after 6 hours of continuous writing. I'd guess 45 degrees Celsius, with room temperature around 25 degrees Celsius. That's just as good as the WD, and I'm quite happy with these results. The drive has an annoying blue light. This means I can't put it near the monitor, or I'll have to tape something over it. Not really a problem, but still it would have been smarter to make the light less powerful and/or put it in the back.
