I bought two of these drives, the first to keep music, photos, videos on, the second as a backup for the first. The drives are beautiful and match my Macbook Air nicely, in size and style. The cord is short and folds flush against the case, so it's very portable, too. Great so far, but...After about six months, the cable on drive one frayed and I had to replace it (with the cable from drive two). After a few more months, that one frayed, too. About this time, drive one started randomly disconnecting from my laptop while I was browsing photos or watching movies. I thought this would be fixed by buying new cables, but it just got worse and worse.At some point, the disconnecting issue got so bad that I started using drive two as my main drive. Now a few months later, drive two is randomly disconnecting. The problem is so frequent that I'm afraid even to back it up in case it disconnects and corrupts my files.After years of using only LaCie drives, I'm sadly switching to another brand.

I ordered this item to use as RAID 1 system. I received it, plugged it in, configured it and started to copy roughly 2.5 TB of data onto it. After about 10 minutes the fan of the drive started to operate extremely loudly. So loudly that I wouldn't have been able to sleep in the same room. I stopped the data transfer but the fan did not stop to be so loud even 10 minutes after the transfer was stopped. I took the drive off the electricity and a few hours later I tried it again. Same thing happened over and over again. I got in touch with the LaCie support and was told that this was normal. Well, I did not believe that and unfortunately the LaCie support didn't seem to believe me that this was not a normal thing. I spoke to a sales person at Tekserve, an Apple specialist in New York and they also said that the fan was probably defective.I returned the item and bought a new one (from a different vendor) and this drive works perfectly. No issues with a loud fan or anything else. It's an expensive item but it appears to be worth the investment.

Drive was only turned on and used about 7 times total, only used for backing up files and watching a few digital movies. About the 7th time I turned it on, it just stopped being recognized by my computer completely and the data is not recoverable without spending hundreds of dollars to do so as recovery is not included in the warranty. Do NOT buy this product or bother with the warranty as you can only get it replaced but not get your lost files recovered without paying 10x more than the drive itself is worth. Terrible product, completely disappointed, don't waste your money.

There is one problem that seems to be universal and it relates to the "supposedly" clever imbedded cable attached to it. It's very short and needs to be bent often. If you're on a laptop, it is common to unintentionally flex the cable when moving the laptop for minor reasons. In doing so, the flimsy quality of the cord comes into play. There will be times when the drive disconnects because the contacts are so sensitive after repeatedly moving the laptop. It is very prone to breakage at the contact points. The hard drive is fine, it's the cord that is of little use. Don't waste your time with the imbedded cable, buy a longer and more flexible replacement and you'll be fine.

I work exclusively off of an external drive and I was looking for increased capacity over my 5 year old working like a champ Seagate Free Agent 500gb drive. I have used it for several months now, and as many other have pointed out the cable to drive connection literally could not be worse. If you are using this with a desktop perhaps that is the one time it is acceptable, but I would still question the company releasing a product with this flaw. I have suffered through gently babying this drive connection but life is not gental. Finally yesterday when slightly moving my laptop on a table which the drive was also sitting the cable rotated slightly and the connection was lost. Now the drive is READ-ONLY and will not allow me to make any changes to any of the files/folders. I have been told I have to "BACK UP THE DRIVE AND REFORMAT, THEN RESTORE" to fix this problem. That means I have to come up with another 1TB of space in order to do that, which really means I have to buy a new drive. What that really means is I BOUGHT A NEW SEAGATE BACKUP PLUS drive as my last Seagate has been though the gauntlet of 5 years of constant travel and abuse and still works like the day I got it. I bought this hard-drive as a gift. I really do hate to say anything negative, but I was very bummed when my girlfriend opened it and it didn't work--no power to the device OR recognition of the hard-drive by ANY computer we tried (Mac or PC...and USB 2.0 or 3.0). I then bought a USB Y-Cable to see if that would help power it, but still no luck. Upon request from "AJ" to return the product (even though it was admittedly about a month later than the return policy accepts) I was denied a return immediately. I explained that the product was defective and that we never even had a chance to use it once, but apparently "AJ" either doesn't read their requests for returns and just denies them all immediately, or they just don't care enough about their customers for assistance with issues. Sorry, but I would not recommend this product or seller.

Bought this unit in October of 2012 exclusively as a second back up of all my iTunesmusic and my modestly-sized photo collection which normally live on my MacBook.(My first back up is on/in the Cloud.)Very easy to connect, set up, and use. Nice and flat, compact. Resides in a locked safefor most of it's existence, so any observation with reliability is unfortunately useless,since it only comes out and gets hooked up once a month or so for updating of thefiles.** But one observation I did notice was that the cable connection was very questionable.The cable would pop off from the LaCie if I happened to move the LaCie hard drive.What I found was that the orange rubber cover was actually preventing the cable fromseating properly! Taking off the rubber and carefully enlarging the port hole with anX-Acto knife allowed the cable to seat just a bit deeper into the drive connector. Hasn'tfallen off since. **Overall, I made a good choice buying this unit.

A little background first:I purchased this drive to be my always on external drive that has all my movies and TV Shows. Since I really didn't care if I lost them all, I set it up as a RAID0. It's currently connected to a 2012 Mac Mini.PROS:-With the thunderbolt cable, this thing is FAST-lots of storage-cool looking (except for the bright blue light)-works great with Mountain LionCONS:-the Blue light on the front is extremely bright. You may not want to have this setup in your living room.-the drive makes this suttle chirping noise when it's running-it's pretty heavy and can get very hot. So don't place anything too close to it.-slightly complicated setup. No issue for me, but if your not comfortable with using the disk utility on a Mac, you may not want to use thisOveral, if you need the capacity, I highly reccomend this drive.

I was kind of surprised that its just a basic 'porsche' designed lacie with a rubber 'shoe' or a rubber frame around it. How well will it protect from rugged abuse? It looks like what I said in the title-okay. I am sure it would survive a small to medium fall and protect the drive well. I guess I fell a little bit for the whole 'orange-as-the-newest=cool-tech-gadget-colour' thing. But all in all-it works exactly as a lacie should work. Its fine with some half-decent rubber protection. I forgot what I paid but I think it was not too bad. Since it works well and everything is easy to use I'm giving it a 4. But it didn't blow my socks off-in 5 star territory-but hey-4 stars is pretty good and worth a look or a purchase.

This is however the third set of Lacie drives I've purchased and none have given me any trouble.One of my favorite features of this drive is the auto sleep. My last set of the equivalent drives didn't turn off the light unless you turned the switch off and at night they are quite bright.Form factor and ease of use I give two thumbs up. They are about as small as they can get as a 3.5" drive, the power supply is simple and not bulky, and they don't suck up much desk space. The set up utility is super easy to use, although I'd rather just use Disk Utility.I give it 4 stars rather than 5 since I can't comment on drive failure which seems to be the most common complaint of any hard drive purchase.

After just a few days of lugging this around in my backpack, the part the cable connects to sank in. It still kinda worked after that, but the drive would disconnect with the slightest movement of the USB cord when in use (looking at the product pics now, it even looks very delicate). Shortly after, the hard drive stopped working altogether. I only got a week's use out of this thing. These might be okay if they are just going to sit on a desk, but their build-quality renders them non-portable.The older model LaCie Rugged drives I own have held up under much rougher handling and lots of travel and still work perfectly 3+ years later. It's just these mini models I don't trust.I would only consider getting this if you are not going to be lugging it around at all.

I understood it would take a fair amount of time to complete the back up, and it did. After several hours, it was roughly 35% complete, and I went to bed. When I woke up, I learned that the back up failed, so I had to start it again. Again it froze up before completing, and it looked like I would have to start from scratch. Third time proved to be a charm, as the aborted back ups apparently stored most of the data the first 2 tries, so the 3rd didn't take long. No issues since, but the initial issues cost one star.

This has been very reliable over the last couple years I've used it. One factor kept me from giving it 5 stars... When I did some cleaning around my computer desk, I unplugged and cleaned all my devices. When I plugged them back in, I switched my power cables to my hard drive and zip drive (yes I still have a zip drive!) The Zip drive's power cord was enough to power the light on the hard drive, but not enough to spin the disks to get it to work. As this is our only current data back up, my wife cried for fear of losing 6 years worth of photos. After a couple hours of online looking, I plugged the manufacturers cord and it started right up. I don't mind it not working with the wrong cable... I just think the support for this problem shouldn't have been so difficult to find.

I am new to the land of backup data storage. I bought this drive to backup my PC and LaCie was highly recommended by an IT friend whom I very much respect. I may buy LaCie again, but I will never buy this one. I didn't fully backup my hard drive on my PC because when I hooked it up it made digital chinking noises all the time. I asked another IT friend about it and he recommended getting rid of it. It sounded pretty cheap and not very stable to me. So, I am returning it. Consequently, because it sounded cheap I didn't fully backup because I was going to return it and talk about crazy coincidence....my hard drive failed two days ago and I may have lost all of my family memories for the past year. So, I am frustrated that this drive sounded so crappy and I stopped my project of backing up. Now I am going to buy a different drive and backup redundantly online because this can never happen again....Anyway, that is not about the item but it was a consequence of its cheap and crappy behavior.

I bought this hard drive because I was looking for a portable hard drive with USB 3.0 capabilities as well as a slim profile. The enclosure of this hard drive is quite solid feeling and looks good too. I've only used this hard drive with various OS X machines and have never had a problem with the hard drive not being recognized on any of the systems I've been using it on.Like all LaCie external drives, it comes with a built in installation and formatting utility to partition the drive for using between both Windows and OS X systems.

The enclosure of this hard drive is quite solid feeling and looks good too. I bought the Lacie Minimus after having previously owned a Lacie 8GB Flash Drive and liking the quality of the product and brand. I know that it is tacky and external hard drives don't need to be nice looking since their function and purpose is to store data, but I also bought this device cause it looks cool.My primary back up purpose is family photos and a large collection of music, with a small amount of documents. I have a laptop and desktop and want this to be the primary backup for both computers. Both of my computers are using USB 2.0.After receiving the Minimus I backed up the laptop the same day due to possible hard drive issues and growing concern for the failure of the drive. I have now also backed up my desktop getting ready for install of Windows 8.Pros:Nice designVery quietQuality constructionBacks up dataCons:Not really any negative marks, but I am not a fan of the software that Lacie provided to back up so I just use the Windows 7 built in backup software which is great. Not really a negative in my book and does not take away any functionality so no stars lost on reviewI would recommend this drive and I can't wait to get a USB 3.0 capable computer to take advantage of the quicker transfer speeds.
