7200 RPM drives are needed for any and all multimedia applications (audio, video, pictures, etc.). This drive is great! Portable, High speed USB 3.0, compatible with PC or MAC, shock resistant, and the Lacie brand/quality that multimedia users have trusted for years = what else could you want?Some people say they want a 1TB drive...ok so buy two? At $89 these are a steal.

I don't know why other people have had issues with their hard drive. But this device has performed flawlessly. And I have dropped it multiple times and I have not had any issues what so ever. I now buy all external hard drives/ thumb drives from them all well.

This is a very dependable hard drive. We have had several over the years, and they are all still working. Given our experience with some other brands, this is meant as high praise.

Funnily enough, this unit is physically smaller than my LaCie 500 gig HD. They both seem to work just fine.

I got this to back up my desktop Mac and it is doing a very good job.I will probably buy another one to back up my photographs.

I've had this unit for more than 3 years now, and it has worked great that whole time. I think I've replaced 3 disks in that time, which I think is a very reasonable number of failures. It runs continuously on my Mac Pro, and is dedicated to Apple's Time Machine, which works great.

This LaCie external hard drive seems to be capable. However, when I went to install the drive on my computer, I began with the included startup file. The installation process began, but "hung" and never finished. I tried again with the same result. I tried it on another computer with the same result. So I had to go into the device manager of Windows 7 and expand the empty partition, leaving only the small partition with the installation commands. I assume I accomplished what the included installation would have, but can't be sure. I timed the transfer of 24 Gb of documents and pictures to the drive from my computer and found the speed was only 50% faster when plugged into the USB 3.0 port vs. the USB 2.0 port of my computer. Is the lack of much higher speed for 3.0 due to my new, "hot-rod" HP computer with an Intel i7 processor, etc. or the LaCie? I don't know, but it does work reliably. The 3-foot cable is short, but I like the on-off switch.

I chose this rating because this is what I was looking for.It is heavy duty and fit just right for what I needed it for.Light weight and easy to connect, disconnect and carry on.Also the price is right.I recommend it.

Don't buy it.I have had Lacie hard drive in the past it was super fast back in the days. 5 years ago.When I bought this drive it's slower than my previous hard drive. I mean it look styliush and strong but no performance. Before this hard drive I was using WD usb 2.0 nothing wrong with it and transfer data between 28-32mb per sec. This hard drive is relatively new to so I was expecting a transfer speed between 60-100 Mb/sec what I got is half of my expectation.Performance of this har drive:USB 2.0:01 Min 22.0 Mb/sec03 Min 20.9 Mb/sec05 Min 19.9 Mb/sec10 Min 19.5 Mb/secAverage:20.57 Mb/secUSB 3.0:01 Min 40.0 Mb/sec03 Min 38.0 Mb/sec05 Min 39.6 Mb/sec10 Min 43.1 Mb/secAverage:40.17 Mb/secMy previous WD westren digital 2.0 USB use to transfer date up to 32 Mb/sec. I regret getting rid of it. When I bought this hard drive I have had high expectation plus I have bought an express card to use it with this junk hard drive. Very disappointed. Bought what I thought was a 500gb to back up as a mirror image on carbonite. Opened the factory sealed box. Low and behold the drive was 300gb. I had to send it back.

Item was a little bigger than I thought, as "mini" doesn't really quite justify its size - it's about the standard size for La Cie. However, it's a great external drive and very simple to use.

I research everything to death before making a major purchase and while this was less than $100 and not really a major purchase monetarily, it will be my back up drive for my life, I mean my laptop! It is perfect. Thank you!

I got this hard drive few months back. After 1 and a half months it died with all my data on it. All I could do it was to reformat and use it from scratch. The technical support very rudely declined to do anything about it, since it was "technically" out of 30 day replacement period. After much negotiation, they had me put another $100 and send another one in what they call as doing a "swap". After about 2 months, it died. This time I was careful and already made a backup so no data was lost. I formatted it and start from scratch. This now happens every week and I am thinking why the hell I am keeping it in use. Every time the computer restarts, the disk may or may not come back. There is nothing technical support will do, they are giving me a hundred possible reasons that could have happened and nothing they can rectify.The truth is they already know about the manufacturing defect so hired the rudest possible person in support to discourage people from contacting them. I see that they are still selling lot of drives because of these fake positive reviews here. This is the reason I got it in the first place. All I can say is learn from my experience and do some research before deciding on a hard disk of this large capacity.

Small and light enough not to weigh down your satchel (or work bag). Metal housing equates to durability in the field (or on the road). Perfect for missions (or travel). LaCie, in my opinion, makes the best in external, portable hard drives solutions.

Such a smooth design and solid feel. Worth every penny. I just wish i bought the 1TB because I'm almost out of room already.
