My desktop is an iMac with 500GB disk, and like many Mac users I use Time Capsule to perform incremental backups in the background. I had previously been using a no-name 1TB USB drive, but it fried last week, and I decided to get a little speed and reliability by replacing it with a dual-disk enclosure that supported RAID and Firewire 800. So I ordered the 2x1TB La Cie from Amazon, and it duly arrived a day earlier than promise. (I see that a lot recently.)Unboxing was easy, and I was soon ready to configure the beast. This requires access to the user manual from the CD (or downloaded). I chose "Mixed" mode, which divides each drive into two partitions; one pair is mirrored for reliability, the other striped for speed. The manual said, "If you choose 'Mixed', the partitioning will already be set up.", but this wasn't the case according to Disk Utility. I poked around for a bit, couldn't see how do do exactly what I wanted, and said, "Screw it, let's just go 'Safe'". {Mirrored.) I quickly set it up and started an initial Time Machine backup. At this point my partner came into the office and asked why I was using the vacuum cleaner. (Actually we don't have a vacuum cleaner, which made it even more puzzling.) I removed my headphones (I'd been listening to Live In Gdansk by David Gilmour), and the noise from the drive hit me. It was louder than the air conditioner, or even the dishwasher. Completely unacceptable for a home office environment. So it's going back. Maybe I'll get a couple of cheap USB drives and do software REAID...

Our circumstances:-- Bought this puppy from Amazon for my wife's new (2009) Mac Mini that we recently purchased.-- Amazon delivered it overnight for just a $3.99 premium over the free shipping and it arrived well packed and on time.-- Though our Mini is the low end model with but 1GB RAM and a 120GB internal HD, the next model up, which features a 320GB drive and 2GB RAM, costs $200 more and was otherwise identical! I upgraded our RAM for $45 then bought this LaCie d2 drive for $153 and now have a 1.12TB Mac Mini for less than Apple's much more space limited 'upgrade' model--an especially good deal if you factor in tax savings!Pros:-- Quality! Feels really well made with high quality 3-way on/off/auto switch, well anchored ports and--and this was key for me--*all 4* cables that you might need--USB 2.0, eSATA, and both Firewire 400 & 800--a rarity! And... all are of reasonable length (ie., none of those 7-inchers some cheapo manufactures include). Quite heavy and definitely not what you'd consider casually portable, esp. with its required power brick (though it's rather svelte for a brick!). I consider this a positive for desktop applications.-- Quiet! Have it sitting behind the monitor and it's barely perceptible. Much, *much* quieter, for example, than the Fantom 250GB external drive I have on my Windows machine.-- Cool! Thick, heavy aluminum case is fanless and ribbed... pretty much a hollowed n' hefty heat sink that was just barely warm after transferring our 90GB of data... seems equally fast or faster than the internal drive... and way faster than the USB bus-powered Western Digital 250GB drive I'd had hooked up earlier; we're now attached via the included high quality FW 800 cable. BTW: Set up with the Mac was a complete no brainer... plugged it in and it asked if we wanted to optimize it for Mac or Windows/Linux... one click and about a minute later... Voila! Ready to rock! Furthermore--and this may be very important to some of the greener Mac owners--this drive reliably auto-powers down and then rapidly spins back up when you wake your Mac; apparently some of the currently available so-called "Mac friendly" Western Digital drives fail to power down & back up automatically, particularly when connected via Firewire (check the reviews!).-- Capacious! Comes in around 936GB, the usual... not sure what to do with all this space, so tried turning on the Time Machine feature of Leopard and no troubles there.-- Comely! The brushed aluminum exterior is refined with no sharp edges/burrs and a fairly close match to the Mini's, though admittedly, the ribs do lend it a different, slightly more 'aggressive' vibe.Cons:-- Cost... and this just a minor gripe... On Newegg and Amazon these days you can easily find 1TB drives for under a hundred bucks, though admittedly, these are not quad interface models with all cables and back up software--and perhaps more importantly, did not enjoy the positive reviews this drive's garnered.-- Reliability? Too early to tell... will hope for best but so far no signs it's gonna 'byte' the dust! And if it does... well then C'est LaCie! (heh!)Summary:I highly recommend this drive... especially for those of you with eSATA or Firewire 800 ports who want to take advantage of all that extra bandwidth, and/or those of you out there with Macs who--like me--*really* appreciate a hassle-free experience.~UPDATE 1/1/2010: Three months in now with no problems--still runs much quieter than Tiger's rapidly reversing Escalade, faster than his fleeing sponsors and more reliably than The Enquirer's coverage of his 'front nine'... 'Cie ya'!~

This is a nice little drive. Aesthetically gorgeous and incredibly portable.Mine failed 11 months in (there's a two year warranty on this product). LaCie's customer service is seriously lacking. They are unapologetic for any failure of their product and could seriously care less about helping you retrieve your data. They will send you to a third party vendor who works exclusively for LaCie and the third party vendor will charge you $300 for any possible data that may be saved. If you want your data accessible long term, I would not recommend this product.

I have 2 LaCie d2 Quadra external drives. One is a 200 GB I bought about 8 or 9 years ago. And a 320 GB I bought about 4 years ago.My 200 GB recently died on me. But, I think I got my moneys worth out of it. Luckily, I don't trust "any" electronic device and "burn" on a frequent basis... So, I did not loose any important documents or photo's.My 320GB is working great. And if that one died tomorrow, I would not loose anything... as I said, I burn frequently.I'm very surprised how many people here (who have posted on Amazon) use USB with LaCie instead of the 800 FireWire.FireWire is blistering fast!99% of my photo's or documents I "export" to my LaCie external drive take less than a fraction of a second to transfer.Importing back to my desktop or into a software program is just as fast.I am also surprised by the complaints of "noise". My drives are so quiet (while running), I hardly notice them.I wonder... LaCie originally was exported from Japan. Are they now being made in the USA? And if so...has the quality gone down because they are manufactured here in the USA. (Yes, I am cynical). If you own a Toyota that is made in Japan... it runs great. If you buy one that is made in the USA, those are the cars with the problems.Lots of good quality stuff comes from the USA. But, if it's a Union Job, forget it! These people have no incentive to take pride in their work. Why should they? If they do a lousy job, it doesn't matter. They still get their pay checks, bonuses and huge paid vacations. (just like congress).Anyway, based on my experience with LaCie, I won't hesitate to purchase another one to replace the 200 GB one that died.

I am currently in India with this HDD. Lacie says I am eligible for replacement but I have to send back to USA.It was good till it was working. a very compact solution though.Beware and Best of luck. I purchased the LaCie 2Big Quadra 2 TB for the purpose of storage for my photography. I have an iMac that was filled to capacity, and would no longer operate due to the disk being full. It is set up so my iPhoto is stored on my LaCie, but it automatically openswhenever I use my iPhoto icon, so the interface is seamless. I had previously read the reviews on Amazon, and the fan on the LaCie is audible, but it does not bother me - it just is not that loud. So far, it has worked well for me, and I believe it is a good backup for precious files such as photos.

I have always used Lacie external drives and purchesed this because I wanted a big storage drive and something with USB 3.0. So I was looking forward to the experience. Ever since I have first started using it, it has had a mind of its own. Constantly turning itself on and off on its own. Whether the computer is off or on. The worst part is that the main blue power button doesn't even to anything., no matter what you try. This is one of the worst products Ive ever come across. And with no fix in sight from Lacie.

This goes way beyond what you expect from an external drive, and it's better than adding any internal drive short of an SSD. Extremely pleased with the speed. I was also pleasantly surprised by the lack of noise, it's very quiet and I'd heard horror stories about how loud it was. I'm a music business professional and I'm using this as a boot drive for my music. I think I'm Thunderbolt for life now.

So far so good. After more than a year, I find myself wishing I had more of these drives to serve scientific data and results in a small university research group. Currently we operate three 8-TB and one 4-TB 4big Quadras. One is used to serve results via a public webpage (not a high demand site by any measure!) and rarely do we ever have more than one or two data processing jobs beating on a drive at one time. So, it is fair to say that we are not using them very intensively. However, they are critical to the mission of our group. Three are used with Windows 7 PCs and one with a Mac XServe---all via eSATA. (Note, I recommend using a Lacie eSATA controller card on an Xserve as we were not able to get a High Point eSATA controller card to talk to the Quadra.) In summary, the 4big Quadras have been a very cost effective solution for multi-terabyte disk space with the benefits of RAID in essentially a plug-and-play device. My only criticisms are: (1) The power supply is external and plugs into the unit with a simple barrel type connector. It is a very loose connection and can easily be accidentally pulled out if someone is moving items (like the cables) near the drive. Similarly, the power switch is a rocker type switch that can accidentally be turned off if someone bumps it. I recommend that Lacie improve these by adding a safety clip or a protective cover to prevent power disruption during operation. (2) The whole "designed by Neil Poulton" and the big blue eye-ball is really silly. Ditch the designer and the eye-ball (which is inconveniently located on the side opposite where all the important items are) and add a clearer diagnostic display on the side that really needs accessibility and visibility. I'm looking forward to seeing these improvements in a 5big Quadra configuration and 6 GB/s eSATA or USB 3.0 connectivity someday.

I now own two of these beauties, and am considering a third. My first was a network 7TB. That was about two years ago. More recently, I purchased a 12TB unit to go with my new iMac 2TB 27 inch.I cannot say enough good things about the LaCie or the iMac. I've been pouring money into this 'stuff' since 1984 when the Mac first appeared in the market place. That was about six Macs and one lonely Dell ago. Greatest working combo I've used to-date.Oh yes, I have a LAN running about my home and photo studio. No Wi-Fi. Heavy use!

The transfer speed is really impressive, as advertised. I copied my internal drive to the Little Big Disk and set it up as the new boot drive. There's plenty of room for all my files. I am very happy with the performance. The only downside that I see is that the Thunderbolt cable is not included with the box.
