I've just ordered a second one of these drives. Got the first from the local Apple Store at a price about the same as it's offered here. I've had several LaCie 'big disk' drives and have had very good service from all of them. The one failure I had was nothing I can blame LaCie for, and they replaced it promptly with a new drive. They even sent a shipping carton... tested the device, found it to be truly busted, and sent me a new one. This refers to the early, but similar-looking BigDisk series.I've used my 2Tb Quadra drive since September and it's NEVER put a byte wrong. It could explode tomorrow, but like all drives your data's only as safe as the most recent backup.These cases are very well-built, they feel hefty and solid, look great and again, so far, so good.I've had other LaCie drives, notably a sleek-looking Porsche-design unit, that were complete junk, a nice enclosure and perfectly fine disk drive let down by a badly-designed firewire controller. I pulled the disk out and installed it into an old tower, where it's still working fine.It's important to research the individual models from ANY manufacturer! I've determined that the BigDisk and this similar-looking Quadra series are well-made, very cost-effective, and reasonably well-performing drives.BUT IF YOU DON'T BACK UP YOUR DATA, YOU HAVE NOBODY TO BLAME BUT YOURSELF!

Mine stopped working within a month. Maybe I was lucky until then but no hard drive ever failed on me, even those bought 6 years ago. Won't buy from Lacie again.

I bought the lacie 2TB HD to use with time machine on my mac for backup. I had also ordered firewire cables from lacie on another site, Turned out i didnt need them. When i opened the box, I found USE, eSATA, and firewire cables for the drive to connect it any way possible!installation was as simple as plugging in two wires (power, and firewire) then turning it on. my iMAC had an issue with the drive when i tried to auto-install it for use with time machine, but after re-formatting the drive manually with two clicks of the mouse, it was up and running and took a few minutes to back up my entire computer (it was about 68Gb, almost 2 hours by firewire, but eSATA cables would have done it in half that, maybe less. my mac lacked that option)overall i highly recommend this HD over paying $50 more for half the storage when you get apples "time capsule"plus, the lacie just looks badass.

It is lightweight, fast, and have not encountered a single issue thus far. The autosetup is convenient and quick allowing access to any computer quickly to back up files. The USB 3.0 is worth every dollar and without it uploading is much, much slower.

I just picked up this drive, because I've had a number of LaCie drives with no issues, and wanted to replace my old 40g and 80g firewire LaCie drives with a single larger portable drive to carry with me.Unfortunately, since plugging it in last night, I've been plagued with connection issues: plugged directly into the computer, plugged into a powered USB hub, plugged into the powered USB hub on my monitor, all have the same problem... I've also tried a few different USB-to-miniUSB cables, no change.It randomly disconnects, I haven't been able to successfully get the data off my old 80g LaCie firewire drive (which still functions fine)... after an evening of abortive attempts, and a conversation with LaCie where they've tried to convince me that my USB ports (rated at 5W, and with no problems with any other drives) are at fault, I'm done. It even disconnects when just sitting idle, as it did just now while I was writing this. :(I'm returning the drive, and figured it was worth adding my voice to others here suggesting that you not buy it. :(

My initial review:Nice drive, pretty case, lots of different interfaces, bright blue light. But it's a BACKUP DRIVE. You can't retrieve data from it if it's DEAD. Mine died after 18 months, would not mount. Appeared in the Mac Drive Utility, but upon running "verify and repair," I got the nice message that it was toast and that I needed to backup and reformat the drive. Excuse me??Don't buy this, it doesn't perform its intended purpose, which is to safeguard your data. Doorstop.Updated, 18 months later....:I reformatted the drive as required, and have used it in conjunction with a second Iomega drive as as Time Machine drive (I got another drive because I didn't trust the LaCie after it failed). I have had no further problems with it. I don't know what happened, it may have been an operating system error of some kind, or it might have been "operator error." One thing I have noticed is that if I reboot my desktop iMac as a target drive without powering down the LaCie drive, both the desktop and the external drive mount as drives when I hook up a firewire drive to my laptop. That is, the iMac in target mode passes through the firewire connection to the LaCie so they are chained. It's likely that I failed to eject both drives from my laptop and that this led to the start-from-scratch problem I had earlier. In any case, I have upgraded my rating to 4 stars because the drive has functioned correctly now for some time. One thing I noticed having used both this and the Iomega drive is that the power supply on this is smart and doesn't run hot when the drive is powered down. In contrast, the Iomega power supply is a vampire and always pulls power whether the drive is on or not.

LaCie remains one of the best names in external storage. This drive is no exception. Very compact/unobtrusive, easy to install with my iMac...and so far, keeping flawless backups as my "Time Machine". If you're not backing up EVERYTHING in the Cloud this is your best answer for your desktop. Price is right for the amount of storage.

If you're not backing up EVERYTHING in the Cloud this is your best answer for your desktop. Price is right for the amount of storage.

I'm on my third FAILED Lacie 4tb. Support has sent two units after red lights on drives and now the third unit keeps disconnecting from my Apple desktop. Running OS 10.6.8 and it's so frustrating to have NO back up with all my video files. When I recently received the third unit, I pulled all the drives to re seat after shipping to discover ALL 4 drives are Hitachi dated from July 2008. This is after, I specifically asked them not to send another Refurbished unit. Shady! Stay away from LACIE till they get their act together.

I used several external harddisks but this one is the best for me! The only one complain: the included USB cable is terribly short(It is useless).

I bought this 1TB drive 10 months or so ago. I wanted a firewire 800 drive so was willing to pay extra. I initially set this drive up as a boot drive.Soon after starting to use this drive, I began copying files over to it - I assumed that's what a terabyte's worth of disk space is to be used for! This is where it started to show problems. The drive would fail at some point whilst copying large amounts of data to it. I would get an error message, the drive would then be unusable and would have to be force-ejected/dismounted then rebooted. Some data will have copied over with a corrupt/incomplete file indicating where the copy stopped/failed.Thus began my journey with La Cie's 'tech support'. Right now, a month after initiating a trouble-ticket, I've been passed on to my fourth 'technician', who is asking me to do what technician #2 asked weeks prior. That wouldn't be so bad but technician #3 did the exact same thing, starting off by asking me to run Disk Utility on it. Of course I had already done that, both prior to contacting them AND with technicians #1 and #2. We seem to be stuck now with technician #4 asking me to hook it up to another computer. Trouble is I already explained to technician #2 that that wasn't an option, nor should I be REQUIRED somehow to see how it works with someone else's computer. I don't care how it works on someone else's computer; the fact that it won't work well with MY computer irks me. I have 4 other external hard drives set up on this computer, not one of which exhibits any problem. I'm inclined to believe that the La Cie drive itself is the problem.This problem isn't so much now with the drive but rather with an intransigent tech support that so far refuses to fulfill the company's warranty. A defective hard drive is an annoyance but working with a tech support team that doesn't seem to know its butt from a hole in the ground is really unacceptable.

I bought this at my university book store (MUCH pricier there, but i can pay with scholarships!)Anywho...I was originally worried about this brand as i had never heard of it before entering that store. I am very glad i bought it though. Size wasnt an issue (functionality wise), but it sure is cute!Pros: nice size, look, and capacity. It's pretty and convenient. :)It took 35 minutes or so for it to put 90g onto the hard drive. I don't know if this is considered fast or slow, but i wanted to mention it just in case it would help anyone narrow down their hard drive search in anyway.Everything is great about this hard drive except for a couple minor things that i am going to nitpick about. These things wouldn't stop me from buying it all over again, and i am really happy with my purchase. But, i thought i would list them here just in case they may be deal breakers for others.The corners are sharp...like sharp sharp. I would suggest a carrying case if you're going to be taking it out and about. I cringe at the thought of it ripping and ruining one of the linings in my handbags.The texture is a bit funny. (I freak out at goopy kid toys though, so i'm a texture queen). It's not bad, just a bit funny. It's a weird, smooth, gritty dust feeling. I HATE picking this thing up.

The unit works flawlessly, no issues at all. Huge amount of space combined with a decent read and write speeds is exactly what I was looking for. The aluminum enclosure helps to cool down the drives. I store all my data on 2big in RAID 1 mode, which I've chosen for maximum data redundancy. I'd recommend 2big without hesitation!

Have used LaCie extensively - recent trials of d2 Quadra which has ECO mode causes Finder Crash in Mac OS X and the "fix" by LaCie does NOT work. There is a history of problems with this drive dating to JUNE, still NOT resolved. Check it out before purchase for use as back up with MAC....
