The USB3 connection quality of 1TB drive negates all advantages this drive has.The USB3 cord tends to disconnect from hard drive at every little movement which makes it impossible to be used with laptop.I bought junk for ~$170..

Only had it since August, but it appears to be a solid drive. A tad slow (I believe its a 5,400), but it is quiet. I've had no problems with it. I got tired of short-lived Seagates and WDs (WD should be ashamed for continuing to sell their "book" drives--I had three fail after two years).I'm hoping Lacie will prove to be a solid performer. I don't mind paying a bit more for a good drive.

Recently bought this drive for my Audio one class. I absolute love it! It holds everything, fire-wire capability allows for high speed recording/mixing in Pro Tools 9HD, External power source also allows for higher speed capability. Would recommend this to all of my friends!

To put it short, I've RMA'd this drive 3 times within a two month period, only to have it fail again a week ago... the most unreliable drive I have ever owned. I can't trust putting anything on it without worrying when it will fail. After reading all the rave reviews, this is easily the most disappointing drive I've ever owned.

It's frightening to think of losing all the photos I've collected over the years! I stored them on a Maxtor when I was on a PC but needed something Mac-friendly when I switched. By most accounts LaCie is the most Apple-rific. I chose single disk 2TB for simplicity and have not partitioned it for additional use with PC although I like that I can.Set up was manageable. It was easy to plug wires where they needed to go but took a while to figure out that I needed LaCie support help to initialize the software because my Mac is too new for this drive. I'm using OS 10.6.6. Using Firewire 800 made the initial back up fly! Sorry I don't have numbers but I can be impatient and didn't get to tapping my fingers with this.I've had the drive running for a few days. It's constantly backing up and (seems to be) overwriting old info with new. I love that I don't have to manually manage it! There is a pleasant hummm and occasional spinning noise. The housing is just barely warm. The blue light is beautiful (I'm in a room that's bright with sunlight, the walls are faux finished in gold/tan. Even at night, the glow hasn't been stronger than the monitor).

I bought two 2x2tb drives to use for my NAS. They were very easy to set up - mostly plug & play. They're quiet too and had no issues being found on the network. However, when I ran file transfer tests, they averaged between 1.7mb/s and 4mb/s. The types of content I tested was a collection of typical office/image files and, separately, one 250mb movie. While the movie file went faster, it still took over a minute to copy the entire file.That's a far cry from the 30mb/s they advertise and the 12-15mb/s the salesperson promised. I shipped one of the drives to the company for further research and they found nothing wrong. They said the OS (Samba) was to blame and it doesn't get much faster than that. All their products are Samba.So, unfortunately, I had to return the drives. Getting a few megs a second is too slow for what I need them for.Pro: easy setup, quietCon: slow

Just got this and was "whoa!" upon opening the package. it comes with "whatever" adapter; 100-240V, 50-60Hz together with 4 types of interchangeable plugs. I wish every electronic stuff comes like this!Will update on usage later.

I have had the unit for about a week now and I am extremely pleased with it. I bought this unit after a lot of research to augment an external case using two drives set up in a software RAID 1 configuration. I wanted the Firewire hardware RAID 1 capability this unit provides. First I want to address some of the negative comments here.Noise - Noise level is a very relative experience. The fans in this unit are noticeable but not unreasonably so. My old case also has fans that you can hear. My fans seem to be on all the time but I consider that a good thing as that means drive heat should not be a problem and the air coming out the back seems to always be cool. I would much rather hear fan noise than have the drives getting too hot.RAID - If you don't know what RAID means and are not technically inclined then you probably shouldn't be messing with these settings anyway. The default setup is probably all you need. Contrary to posts I found that changing the setting to RAID 1, which is why I got the unit in the first place, was very easy to do. The only caveat I have on this is LaCies choice to use the Fast and Safe terminology rather than the standard RAID 0 and RAID 1 terms. This might confuse the less knowledgeable user.Manual - I found the included manual to be all that most people would need. It does refer you to the manual on the CD for areas where you might need more information, but for those who don't need to change settings it should be just fine.Pros - FW800 connection, very sturdy design, does not use WD drives, HW RAID, moderately quietCons - none yetI would definitely recommend this unit.

My first Lacie d2 Quadra came DOA. Lacie support wasn't good. Fortunately, Amazon rocks. My replacement from Amazon customer support arrived quickly. After less than a year the replacement died (hard drive fragged). This wasn't a heavily used drive. I used it for daily backups. The device sat on my desk in an office environment, and wasn't abused.On the plus side, the casing is gorgeous. It feels very solid, and provides the illusion of indestructibility.

Installation was a snap, unit is so small, quiet and quick as I installed a 3.0 card first. I got a deal on it and would consider buying another. My weekly backup is now over so fast I am amazed. Something that actually does what they say it will, wow.

First, going along with what another reviewer said, the sizes are different and as of 03/2011, Amazon's images do not reflect this. The pictured drive is the 500GB with a height of 13.4mm. The 1TB drive has a height of 19mm. It doesn't sound like much, but the 1TB is much boxier than it's smaller cousin.I've only had the drive a day, but I've already backed up two computers (thank you SuperDuper!) and moved a good bit of data on and off it. It's certainly fast enough, and even booting from it when alright (on a Macbook Pro), but don't expect it to be mindblowing or anything.Compared to other portable drives, I think having the small USB cable attached is an advantage since you can't lose it, but I could see how some people might miss having a longer cable (of course you could just get an extension, though).I want to use this mainly with a Macbook Air, so size is pretty much the most important aspect to me.Definitely recommended for someone looking for maximum portability.

The reviews on Apple Store.com and Amazon were promising, but mine quit 75% of the way thru the formatting process with a 'corruption' message. After that, the device was 'unreadable.' All I did was follow the instructions in the start-up guide and in the Setup Assistant (which disappears if the install fails). I downloaded a manual from LaCie and it says that when installing on a Mac, no formatting is necessary because the drive is pre-formatted for Mac. So why does Setup Assistant make you format? Luckily the Apple Store took it back and refunded my money so I avoided the horror stories other reviewers have reported.
