I had this for almost 6 months and now I know its going to die like the rest of external hard drives. I guess its the reason Solid State Drives are becoming the new norm but still too expensive : (

I have been a fan of Lacie design for awhile now, but after two failed hard drives, the latest being within 6 months of purchase, I will never buy another one of these again. They are great looking objects compared to every other manufacturer's ugly hard drives, but you can't trust anything of value on them cause they are liable to fail without any warning. Honestly I'm not sure how these guys can stay in business with such a crummy track record for performance. Buyer beware - you will be let down by this product in the end.

I have been a fan of Lacie design for awhile now, but after two failed hard drives, the latest being within 6 months of purchase, I will never buy another one of these again. They are great looking objects compared to every other manufacturer's ugly hard drives, but you can't trust anything of value on them cause they are liable to fail without any warning. Honestly I'm not sure how these guys can stay in business with such a crummy track record for performance. Buyer beware - you will be let down by this product in the end.

I have purchased eight of these drives over the years at about six month intervals as more storage is needed. Starting with a 250gb and ending with a 1TB about four months ago. I love to multitude of connection options, the speed of the drive and the nifty rack you can mount them in. The one thing that trumps all of that is this drive's 100% fail rate.I know from experience that this drive will fail between 24 and 36 months. Of the eight D2 drives I own, five have failed shortly before or after the warranty period expires. I have been lucky up until yesterday. The drives have been redundant backups or part of a larger backup scheme and very little data has been lost. That is until yesterday when my backup D2 music drive failed 24 hours after the primary D2 music drive failed.The question might be asked, Why do you keep buying them if you have had such poor luck? The first one that failed was a "Well dam, I got a bad one" The second one was a "Man I guess it was too hot there?" The third was a "Man what the hell is going on with these things?" The fourth and fifth that happened within 24 hours of each other were a "Are you effin kidding me?"I either have the worst hard drive luck in the world or there is a systemic problem with this drive.Take it from someone that has had repeatable examples. Buy a different drive.

Full of movies and still running strong. I used to hook it up to my Belkin D600 but transfers of large files takes too long. Hook it directly to a Macbook Pro and fill it up : )

I use this as my scratch drive for all my clients video editing. It's rock solid and endures many hours of use. I connect it via firewire 800 to my 27" IMAC. Pick this up if you do any video editing.

Just got this hard drive a couple of days ago and it suits my needs perfectly! The setup assistant auto formats the drive for you right when you plug it in. I'm using this drive as the time machine backup on my new Macbook Pro 17" and it was super easy to get it up and running. The added feature of USB 3.0 gives me the option to upgrade to superspeed USB if I choose to in the future with a LaCie USB 3.0 Expresscard/34, but for now USB 2.0 speed is just fine. At around 100 bucks, the price was just right for 1TB of space and USB 3.0 together in one package. Have not had any issues thus far with the drive itself. I would recommend this product.Update 2/15/13: The drive still runs like a champ! Never had any issues with it since I got it. Highly recommended!!!

A 2 TB external drive with Firewire 800 is not the most common configuration available on Amazon, so I went with this one given my prior positive experience with LaCie drives. The fan is not altogether quiet so this is definitely not for someone looking for a silent option, although I do not find the noise to be bothersome as the drive spends its time under my desk. Setup was easy and I got it formatted for my iMac in very little time. However, I've been noticing problems when I log into my boot camp Windows 7 64bit partition. That is, the drive will eventually go into standby, and then at some point it will begin flashing the red LEDs on the front and the back. I doubt this is a drive failure as both drives are fully usable even as the red LED is flashing, so I am guessing there is a problem with the "sleep/wake" functioning of the drive in Windows 7. Again, I have not experienced this problem in MacOS. So far my solution is to ignore the flashing red LED when in Windows land. If anyone else is having this problem please leave a comment.

I ordered this because I've loved LaCie drives and they have been great for me. However, the first drive shipped to me from Amazon had a bad front button, and so thanks to Amazon's great replacement/refund policy I was able to get a replacement right away after LaCie tech support confirmed it defective. The 2nd drive seemed to have the EXACT same problems. Strange to me, maybe it was a bad group of drives. Front button unresponsive, not centered. The serial#'s were only differed by a spread of 10 so the "bad batch" idea was given to me from LaCie. Nevertheless, I asked for a refund this time, and am rethinking the purchase of this model.

My first external hard drive, purchased about three years ago, is a giant hulking thing compared to this! The Rikki is the size of an index card, and about a centimeter thick. I am so pleased to have a hard drive that does not require an external power source. I now keep my entire iTunes library on the Rikki, saving vital space on my laptop. I purchased this seven months ago and have had no problems with it.The cable it comes with is quite short, only about three inches of flexible cable in between the two plug ends. Usually it's not an issue for me, but if you wanted to use it with a desktop computer, you'd might have to get a longer cable, depending on where your USB ports are located.

I am not the one to give a great reviews but occassionally I will stumble upon a product that outshines all others. I am a mac/pc (notice who I put first) person. And I stand by both products. However, there instances where certain software excels better on one OS than the other. Anyway, I have two 1TB drives for each system and I find that LaCie partner well with Apple products. That said, I have several LaCie drives operating on both on my apple systems. Excellent product with no problems to date. Heck, I can even dasiy chain the two storage drives together if I wanted to especially if importing/exporting between the systems is neccessary. And that works well with time machine flawlessly.

I bought this to back up my MacBook Pro, but could not even install the software. So, thinking this particular item was defective, I had it replaced. Imagine my frustration when I had the exact same problem with the replacement. The product description says it's compatible with Macs, but it's not.

I plugged the 640GB Rikiki into my laptop and XP Pro installed it. When I clicked on the Rikiki drive letter in "My Computer", a window came up and said that I would have to go through a format. I accepted the license ULA that popped up and started the format. The format started but after about 5 minutes, a message popped up and said that the Format could not complete nor could the "User Manual" or "Back-up Software" be copied. It said the Manual and software could be downloaded from the Lacie website and gave me the link. I found the Rikiki user's manual and went through the described window's format procedure. I tried twice, but each time the drive appeared to be formatting, but stopped in about an hour saying "Drive Could Not Be Formatted". For the lack of anything else to try, I selected the "Extended Partition" option and started the format. In a few hours it completed. I copied almost 400GB to the drive overnight. The next day, I added a few more small files to the drive. A short time later I clicked on the drive in "My Computer" and it said "Drive is not formatted". I wasted a few days so far with this drive and now I'll have to contact Lacie and see what they say or just return the drive.I described my drive problems to Lacie tech support and they recommended that I get a replacement drive. Amazon promptly sent out a new one. This time, the new one installed and formatted just like the manual says. Copied over 400GB and no problems so far. I upped my rating from one star to four since I wasted so much time on the first defective drive. Otherwise it would have been 5 stars. I also bought the Lacie padded drive case for the Rikiki, but you really need to purchase a cable with a right angle USB plug in order to use the drive while strapped in the case since the USB port is on the side of the drive.
